Nehemías 13

1En ce temps-là on lut au Livre de Moïse, tout le peuple l’entendant, et on y trouva écrit que les Hammonites et les Moabites ne devaient point entrer à jamais dans l’assemblée de Dieu.
2Parce qu’ils n’étaient pas venus au-devant des enfants d’Israël, avec du pain et de l’eau ; et qu’ils avaient loué Balaam contre eux pour les maudire ; mais notre Dieu avait changé la malédiction en bénédiction.
3C’est pourquoi il arriva que dès qu’on eut entendu la Loi, on sépara d’Israël tout mélange.
4Or, avant que ceci arrivât, Eliasib, Sacrificateur ayant été commis sur les chambres de la maison de notre Dieu, s’était allié à Tobija ;
5Et lui avait dressé une grande chambre, où auparavant on mettait les gâteaux, l’encens, les ustensiles, et les dîmes du froment, du vin et de l’huile, qui étaient ordonnées pour les Lévites, pour les chantres et pour les portiers, avec ce qui se levait pour les Sacrificateurs.
6Or je n’étais point à Jérusalem pendant tout cela : car la trente-deuxième année d’Artaxerxes, Roi de Babylone, je retournai vers le Roi ; et au bout de quelque temps je fus redemandé au Roi.
7Je revins donc à Jérusalem, et alors j’entendis le mal qu’Eliasib avait fait dans ce qui regardait Tobija, lui dressant une chambre dans le parvis de la maison de Dieu.
8Ce qui me déplut fort ; et je jetai tous les meubles de la maison de Tobija hors de la chambre.
9Et on nettoya les chambres selon que je l’avais commandé, et j’y fis rapporter les ustensiles de la maison de Dieu, les gâteaux et l’encens.
10J’entendis aussi que les portions des Lévites ne leur avaient point été données ; de sorte que les Lévites, et les chantres qui faisaient le service, s’étaient retirés chacun dans le bien qu’il avait aux champs.
11Et je censurai les magistrats, leur disant : Pourquoi a-t-on abandonné la maison de Dieu ? Je les rassemblai donc, et les rétablis en leur place.
12Et tous ceux de Juda apportèrent les dîmes du froment, du vin et de l’huile, aux greniers.
13Et j’ordonnai pour receveur sur les greniers, Sélemia Sacrificateur, et Tsadok Scribe ; et d’entre les Lévites, Pédaja ; et pour leur aider, Hanan fils de Zaccur, fils de Mattania ; parce qu’ils passaient pour être très-fidèles ; et leur charge était de distribuer ce qu’il fallait à leurs frères.
14Mon Dieu ! Souviens-toi de moi touchant ceci ; et n’efface point ce que j’ai fait d’une bonne et d’une sincère affection, pour la maison de mon Dieu, et pour ce qu’il est ordonné d’y faire.
15En ces jours-là je vis quelques-uns en Juda qui foulaient aux pressoirs le jour du Sabbat, et d’autres qui apportaient des gerbes, et qui chargeaient sur les ânes du vin, des raisins, des figues, et toute autre sorte de fardeau, et les apportaient à Jérusalem le jour du Sabbat ; et je les sommai le jour qu’ils vendaient les provisions, de ne le plus faire.
16Aussi les Tyriens qui demeuraient à Jérusalem, apportaient du poisson, et plusieurs autres marchandises ; et les vendaient aux enfants de Juda dans Jérusalem le jour du Sabbat.
17Je censurai donc les principaux de Juda, et leur dis : Quel mal ne faites- vous pas de violer le jour du Sabbat ?
18Vos pères n’ont-ils pas fait la même chose, et n’est-ce pas pour cela que notre Dieu a fait venir tout ce mal sur nous et sur cette ville ? Et vous augmentez l’ardeur de la colère de l’Eternel contre Israël, en violant le Sabbat.
19C’est pourquoi dès que le soleil s’était retiré des portes de Jérusalem avant le Sabbat, on fermait les portes, par mon commandement. Je commandai aussi qu’on ne les ouvrît point jusqu’après le Sabbat ; et je fis tenir quelques-uns de mes gens sur les portes, afin qu’il n’entrât aucune charge le jour du Sabbat.
20Et les revendeurs, et ceux qui vendaient toute sorte de denrées passèrent la nuit une fois ou deux hors de Jérusalem.
21Et je les sommai de ne faire plus cela, et je leur dis : Pourquoi passez- vous la nuit devant la muraille ? Si vous y retournez, je mettrai la main sur vous. Ainsi, depuis ce temps-là, ils ne vinrent plus le jour du Sabbat.
22Je dis aussi aux Lévites de se purifier, et de venir garder les portes pour sanctifier le jour du Sabbat. Aussi, ô mon Dieu ! Souviens-toi de moi touchant ceci, et me pardonne selon la grandeur de ta miséricorde.
23En ces jours-là je vis des Juifs qui avaient pris des femmes asdodiennes, hammonites et moabites ;
24De sorte que leurs enfants parlaient en partie asdodien, et ne savaient point parler Juif ; mais ils parlaient la langue de divers peuples.
25C’est pourquoi je les repris, et les blâmai ; j’en battis même quelques-uns, et leur arrachai les cheveux, et les fis jurer par le nom de Dieu, qu’ils ne donneraient point leurs filles aux fils des étrangers, et qu’ils ne prendraient point de leurs filles pour leurs fils, ou pour eux.
26Salomon, le Roi d’Israël, n’a-t-il point péché par ce moyen ? Quoique entre beaucoup de nations il n’y eût point de Roi semblable à lui, et qu’il fût aimé de son Dieu, et que Dieu l’eût établi pour Roi sur tout Israël : toutefois les femmes étrangères l’ont fait pécher.
27Vous accorderions-nous donc de faire tout ce grand mal, en commettant ce crime contre notre Dieu, de prendre des femmes étrangères ?
28Or il y en avait même un d’entre les enfants de Jojadah, fils d’Eliasib, grand Sacrificateur, qui était gendre de Samballat Horonite, lequel je chassai pour cette raison-là d’auprès de moi.
29Mon Dieu ! Qu’il te souvienne d’eux, à cause qu’ils ont souillé la sacrificature, l’alliance dis-je, de la sacrificature et des Lévites.
30Ainsi je les nettoyai de tous les étrangers, et je rétablis les charges aux Sacrificateurs et aux Lévites, à chacun selon ce qu’il avait à faire.
31Et j’ordonnai ce qu’il fallait faire touchant le bois des oblations dans les temps déterminés, et touchant les premiers fruits. Mon Dieu ! Souviens-toi de moi en bien.

1AQUEL día se leyó en el libro de Moisés oyéndolo el pueblo, y fué hallado en él escrito, que los Ammonitas y Moabitas no debían entrar jamás en la congregación de Dios;
2Por cuanto no salieron á recibir á los hijos de Israel con pan y agua, antes alquilaron á Balaam contra ellos, para que los maldijera: mas nuestro Dios volvió la maldición en bendición.
3Y fué que, como oyeron la ley, apartaron de Israel toda mistura.
4Y antes de esto, Eliasib sacerdote, siendo superintendente de la cámara de la casa de nuestro Dios, había emparentado con Tobías,
5Y le había hecho una grande cámara, en la cual guardaban antes las ofrendas, y el perfume, y los vasos, y el diezmo del grano, y del vino y del aceite, que estaba mandado dar á los Levitas, á los cantores, y á los porteros; y la ofrenda de los sacerdotes.
6Mas á todo esto, yo no estaba en Jerusalem; porque el año treinta y dos de Artajerjes rey de Babilonia, vine al rey; y al cabo de días fuí enviado del rey.
7Y venido á Jerusalem, entendí el mal que había hecho Eliasib en atención á Tobías, haciendo para él cámara en los patios de la casa de Dios.
8Y dolióme en gran manera; y eché todas las alhajas de la casa de Tobías fuera de la cámara;
9Y dije que limpiasen las cámaras, é hice volver allí las alhajas de la casa de Dios, las ofrendas y el perfume.
10Entendí asimismo que las partes de los Levitas no se les habían dado; y que los Levitas y cantores que hacían el servicio se habían huído cada uno á su heredad.
11Y reprendí á los magistrados, y dije: ¿Por qué está la casa de Dios abandonada? Y juntélos, y púselos en su lugar.
12Y todo Judá trajo el diezmo del grano, del vino y del aceite, á los almacenes.
13Y puse por sobrestantes de ellos á Selemías sacerdote, y á Sadoc escriba, y de los Levitas, á Pedaías; y á mano de ellos Hanán hijo de Zaccur, hijo de Mathanías: pues que eran tenidos por fieles, y de ellos era el repartir á sus hermanos.
14Acuérdate de mí, oh Dios, en orden á esto, y no raigas mis misericordias que hice en la casa de mi Dios, y en sus observancias.
15En aquellos días ví en Judá algunos que pisaban en lagares el sábado, y que acarreaban haces, y cargaban asnos con vino, y también de uvas, de higos, y toda suerte de carga, y traían á Jerusalem en día de sábado; y protestéles acerca del día que vendían el mantenimiento.
16También estaban en ella Tirios que traían pescado y toda mercadería, y vendían en sábado á los hijos de Judá en Jerusalem.
17Y reprendí á los señores de Judá, y díjeles: ¿Qué mala cosa es esta que vosotros hacéis, profanando así el día del sábado?
18¿No hicieron así vuestros padres, y trajo nuestro Dios sobre nosotros todo este mal, y sobre esta ciudad? ¿Y vosotros añadís ira sobre Israel profanando el sábado?
19Sucedió pues, que cuando iba oscureciendo á las puertas de Jerusalem antes del sábado, dije que se cerrasen las puertas, y ordené que no las abriesen hasta después del sábado; y puse á las puertas algunos de mis criados, para que en día de sábado no entrasen carga.
20Y quedáronse fuera de Jerusalem una y dos veces los negociantes, y los que vendían toda especie de mercancía.
21Y protestéles, y díjeles: ¿Por qué os quedáis vosotros delante del muro? Si lo hacéis otra vez, os echaré mano. Desde entonces no vinieron en sábado.
22Y dije á los Levitas que se purificasen, y viniesen á guardar las puertas, para santificar el día del sábado. También por esto acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, y perdóname según la muchedumbre de tu misericordia.
23Ví asimismo en aquellos días Judíos que habían tomado mujeres de Asdod, Ammonitas, y Moabitas:
24Y sus hijos la mitad hablaban asdod, y conforme á la lengua de cada pueblo; que no sabían hablar judaico.
25Y reñí con ellos, y maldíjelos, y herí algunos de ellos, y arranquéles los cabellos, y juramentélos, diciendo: No daréis vuestras hijas á sus hijos, y no tomaréis de sus hijas para vuestros hijos, ó para vosotros.
26¿No pecó por esto Salomón, rey de Israel? Bien que en muchas gentes no hubo rey como él, que era amado de su Dios y Dios lo había puesto por rey sobre todo Israel, aun á él hicieron pecar las mujeres extranjeras.
27¿Y obedeceremos á vosotros para cometer todo este mal tan grande de prevaricar contra nuestro Dios, tomando mujeres extranjeras?
28Y uno de los hijos de Joiada hijo de Eliasib el gran sacerdote, era yerno de Sanballat Horonita: ahuyentélo por tanto de mí.
29Acuérdate de ellos, Dios mío, contra los que contaminan el sacerdocio, y el pacto del sacerdocio y de los Levitas.
30Limpiélos pues de todo extranjero, y puse á los sacerdotes y Levitas por sus clases, á cada uno en su obra;
31Y para la ofrenda de la leña en los tiempos señalados, y para las primicias. Acuérdate de mí, Dios mío, para bien.

1On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever;
2Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.
3Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.
4And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto Tobiah:
5And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests.
6But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king:
7And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.
8And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.
9Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.
10And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.
11Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.
12Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.
13And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.
14Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.
15In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.
16There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.
17Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?
18Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.
19And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.
20So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.
21Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.
22And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.
23In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:
24And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.
25And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.
26Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.
27Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?
28And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.
29Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.
30Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business;
31And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

1On that day they read in the book of Moses in the hearing of the people; and it was found written in it that an Ammonite and a Moabite should not enter into the assembly of God forever,
2because they didn’t meet the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them; however, our God turned the curse into a blessing.
3It came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated all the mixed multitude from Israel.
4Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the rooms of the house of our God, being allied to Tobiah,
5had prepared for him a great room, where before they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, the singers, and the gatekeepers; and the wave offerings for the priests.
6But in all this, I was not at Jerusalem; for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king; and after some days I asked leave of the king,
7and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a room in the courts of God’s house.
8It grieved me severely. Therefore I threw all Tobiah’s household stuff out of the room.
9Then I commanded, and they cleansed the rooms. I brought into them the vessels of God’s house, with the meal offerings and the frankincense again.
10I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had each fled to his field.
11Then I contended with the rulers, and said, “Why is God’s house forsaken?” I gathered them together, and set them in their place.
12Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, the new wine, and the oil to the treasuries.
13I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute to their brothers.

16Some men of Tyre also lived there, who brought in fish and all kinds of wares, and sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.
17Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, “What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the Sabbath day?
18Didn’t your fathers do this, and didn’t our God bring all this evil on us and on this city? Yet you bring more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”
19It came to pass that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. I set some of my servants over the gates, so that no burden should be brought in on the Sabbath day.

21Then I testified against them, and said to them, “Why do you stay around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they didn’t come on the Sabbath.
22I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me for this also, my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your loving kindness.
23In those days I also saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab;
24and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews’ language, but according to the language of each people.
25I contended with them, cursed them, struck certain of them, plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.
26Didn’t Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, and he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless foreign women caused even him to sin.
27Shall we then listen to you to do all this great evil, to trespass against our God in marrying foreign women?”
28One of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I chased him from me.
29Remember them, my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.
30Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners and appointed duties for the priests and for the Levites, everyone in his work;
31and for the wood offering, at appointed times, and for the first fruits. Remember me, my God, for good.
