1Or, en ce temps-là survient Jean le baptiste, prêchant dans le désert de Judée
2en disant : « Repentez-vous, car le royaume des cieux s'approche. » —
3Il est, en effet, celui dont il a été parlé par l'entremise d'Ésaïe le prophète lorsqu'il dit : « Voix d'un crieur dans le désert : Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, redressez Ses sentiers. » —
4Quant à Jean lui-même, il avait son vêtement fait de poils de chameau, et une ceinture de cuir autour de ses reins, tandis que sa nourriture consistait en sauterelles et en miel sauvage.
5Alors Jérusalem, ainsi que toute la Judée et toute la contrée voisine du Jourdain, se portait vers lui,
6et ils se faisaient baptiser par lui dans le fleuve du Jourdain, en confessant leurs péchés.
7Mais ayant vu plusieurs des pharisiens et des sadducéens qui venaient au baptême, il leur dit : « Engeance de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère à venir ?
8Produisez donc un fruit digne de la repentance,
9et n'imaginez pas de dire en vous-mêmes : Nous avons Abraham pour père ! Car je vous déclare que Dieu peut, de ces pierres-ci, susciter des enfants à Abraham.
10Mais déjà la hache est mise à la racine des arbres ; tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bon fruit doit être coupé et jeté au feu.
11Pour moi, je vous baptise d'eau, en vue de la repentance, mais celui qui vient après moi est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de porter ses sandales ; c'est lui qui vous baptisera d'esprit saint et de feu.
12Il tient son van dans sa main, et il nettoiera son aire, et il serrera son blé dans son grenier, mais il brûlera la paille dans un feu inextinguible. »
13Alors Jésus vient de Galilée vers le Jourdain auprès de Jean, pour se faire baptiser par lui ;
14mais il l'en empêchait, en disant : « C'est moi qui ai besoin de me faire baptiser par toi, et c'est toi qui viens à moi ! »
15Mais Jésus lui répliqua : « Pour le moment laisse faire, car c'est ainsi qu'il nous sied d'accomplir tout ce qui est juste. » Alors il le laisse faire.
16Or, après avoir été baptisé, Jésus sortit aussitôt de l'eau ; et voici, les cieux s'ouvrirent, et il vit l'esprit de Dieu, descendant comme une colombe, venir sur lui ;
17et voici, une voix sortant des cieux disait : « Celui-ci est Mon fils bien-aimé, dans lequel J'ai pris plaisir. »

1Y EN aquellos días vino Juan el Bautista predicando en el desierto de Judea,
2Y diciendo: Arrepentíos, que el reino de los cielos se ha acercado.
3Porque éste es aquel del cual fué dicho por el profeta Isaías, que dijo: Voz de uno que clama en el desierto: Aparejad el camino del Señor, enderezad sus veredas.
4Y tenía Juan su vestido de pelos de camellos, y una cinta de cuero alrededor de sus lomos; y su comida era langostas y miel silvestre.
5Entonces salía á él Jerusalem, y toda Judea, y toda la provincia de alrededor del Jordán;
6Y eran bautizados de él en el Jordán, confesando sus pecados.
7Y viendo él muchos de los Fariseos y de los Saduceos, que venían á su bautismo, decíales: Generación de víboras, ¿quién os ha enseñado á huir de la ira que vendrá?
8Haced pues frutos dignos de arrepentimiento,
9Y no penséis decir dentro de vosotros: A Abraham tenemos por padre: porque yo os digo, que puede Dios despertar hijos á Abraham aun de estas piedras.
10Ahora, ya también la segur está puesta á la raíz de los árboles; y todo árbol que no hace buen fruto, es cortado y echado en el fuego.
11Yo á la verdad os bautizo en agua para arrepentimiento; mas el que viene tras mí, más poderoso es que yo; los zapatos del cual yo no soy digno de llevar; él os bautizará en Espíritu Santo y en fuego.
12Su aventador en su mano está, y aventará su era: y allegará su trigo en el alfolí, y quemará la paja en fuego que nunca se apagará.
13Entonces Jesús vino de Galilea á Juan al Jordán, para ser bautizado de él.
14Mas Juan lo resistía mucho, diciendo: Yo he menester ser bautizado de ti, ¿y tú vienes á mí?
15Empero respondiendo Jesús le dijo: Deja ahora; porque así nos conviene cumplir toda justicia. Entonces le dejó.
16Y Jesús, después que fué bautizado, subió luego del agua; y he aquí los cielos le fueron abiertos, y vió al Espíritu de Dios que descendía como paloma, y venía sobre él.
17Y he aquí una voz de los cielos que decía: Este es mi Hijo amado, en el cual tengo contentamiento.

1In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
2And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
4And the same John had his raiment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.
5Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,
6And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
10And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
11I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
12Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
13Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.
14But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
15And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.
16And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

1In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,
2“Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”
3For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make the way of the Lord ready! Make his paths straight!”
4Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
5Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.
6They were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance!
9Don’t think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
10Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.
11“I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
12His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.”
13Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
14But John would have hindered him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”
15But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.
16Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.
17Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
