1ALS es aber Morgen geworden war, hielten alle Hohenpriester und Ältesten des Volkes Rat wider Jesus, um ihn zum Tode zu bringen. (a) Lu 22:66
2Und sie liessen ihn fesseln, abführen und dem Statthalter Pontius Pilatus überliefern.
3ALS dann Judas, der ihn verraten hatte, sah, dass er verurteilt war, reute es ihn, und er brachte die dreissig Silberlinge den Hohenpriestern und Ältesten zurück (a) Mt 26:15
4und sagte: Ich habe gesündigt, indem ich unschuldiges Blut verraten habe. Doch sie sagten: Was geht das uns an? Sieh du zu!
5Und er warf das Geld in den Tempel und entfernte sich, und er ging hinweg und erhängte sich. (a) Apg 1:18; 2Sa 17:23; Sac 11:13
6Die Hohenpriester aber nahmen das Geld und sagten: Man darf es nicht in den Tempelschatz legen, weil es Blutgeld ist.
7Nachdem sie aber Rat gehalten hatten, kauften sie dafür den Acker des Töpfers als Begräbnisplatz für die Fremden.
8Daher wurde jener Acker Blutacker genannt bis heute. (a) Apg 1:19
9Da wurde erfüllt, was durch den Propheten Jeremia gesprochen worden ist, welcher sagt: "Und sie nahmen die dreissig Silberlinge, die Schätzungssumme für den Wertgeschätzten, den man von seiten der Söhne Israels eingeschätzt hatte, (a) Jer 18:2; s. auch Sac 11:13.
10und gaben sie für den Acker des Töpfers", "wie der Herr mir befohlen hatte." (1) s. Anm. zu V. 9.
11JESUS aber wurde vor den Statthalter gestellt; und der Statthalter fragte ihn: Bist du der König der Juden? Da sprach Jesus: Du sagst es. (1) vgl. Anm. zu Mt 26:64.
12Und als er von den Hohenpriestern und Ältesten angeklagt wurde, antwortete er nichts. (a) Mt 26:63; Jes 53:7
13Da sagte Pilatus zu ihm: Hörst du nicht, wieviel Zeugnisse sie wider dich vorbringen?
14Und er antwortete ihm auch nicht auf ein einziges Wort, sodass der Statthalter sich sehr verwunderte. (a) Joh 19:9
15AN jedem Fest aber pflegte der Statthalter dem Volk einen Gefangenen freizulassen, welchen sie wollten.
16Sie hatten aber damals einen berüchtigten Gefangenen namens Barabbas.
17Als sie nun versammelt waren, sagte Pilatus zu ihnen: Welchen wollt ihr, dass ich euch freilasse, Barabbas oder Jesus, den man den Christus nennt?
18Denn er wusste, dass sie ihn aus Neid überliefert hatten. (a) Joh 11:47 48; 12:19
19Während er aber auf dem Richterstuhl sass, sandte seine Frau zu ihm und liess sagen: Habe du nichts zu schaffen mit diesem Gerechten; denn ich habe heute im Traum seinetwegen viel gelitten.
20Die Hohenpriester und die Ältesten aber beredeten die Volksmenge, sie sollten Barabbas begehren, Jesus dagegen zum Tode bringen. (a) Apg 3:13 14
21Da begann der Statthalter und sprach zu ihnen: Welchen von den beiden wollt ihr, dass ich euch freilasse? Sie aber sagten: Barabbas.
22Pilatus sagt zu ihnen: Was soll ich dann mit Jesus tun, den man den Christus nennt? Sie sagen alle: Gekreuzigt soll er werden!
23Er aber sagte: Was hat er denn Böses getan? Da schrieen sie überlaut: Gekreuzigt soll er werden!
24Als aber Pilatus sah, dass es nichts nützte, sondern dass vielmehr ein heftiger Tumult entstand, nahm er Wasser, wusch sich vor dem Volk die Hände und sagte: Ich bin unschuldig am Blute dieses Gerechten; sehet ihr zu! (a) Mt 27:4; 5Mo 21:6 7; Ps 26:6
25Und alles Volk antwortete und sprach: Sein Blut komme über uns und über unsre Kinder! (a) Mt 23:35; Apg 5:28
26Da liess er ihnen Barabbas frei; Jesus aber überwies er, nachdem er ihn hatte geisseln lassen, zur Kreuzigung.
27DA nahmen die Soldaten des Statthalters Jesus in die Burg und brachten die ganze Kohorte wider ihn zusammen.
28Und sie zogen ihn aus und hängten ihm einen roten Mantel um,
29flochten eine Krone aus Dornen, setzten sie ihm aufs Haupt und (gaben ihm) ein Rohr in seine rechte Hand, warfen sich vor ihm auf die Kniee und verspotteten ihn mit den Worten: Heil dir, König der Juden!
30Und sie spieen ihn an, nahmen das Rohr und schlugen ihn auf das Haupt. (a) Jes 50:6
31Und nachdem sie ihn verspottet hatten, zogen sie ihm den Mantel aus und legten ihm seine Kleider an. UND sie führten ihn ab, um ihn zu kreuzigen.
32Als sie aber hinauszogen, trafen sie einen Mann aus Cyrene mit Namen Simon; den zwangen sie, ihm das Kreuz zu tragen.
33Und als sie an einen Platz namens Golgotha das bedeutet: Schädel gekommen waren,
34gaben sie ihm Wein mit Galle vermischt zu trinken; und als er gekostet hatte, wollte er nicht trinken. (a) Ps 69:22
35Nachdem sie ihn aber gekreuzigt hatten, verteilten sie seine Kleider unter sich, indem sie das Los warfen, - damit erfüllt würde, was durch den Propheten gesagt worden ist: "Sie haben meine Kleider unter sich verteilt / und über mein Gewand das Los geworfen." (1) einige alte Textzeugen fügen diese Worte hinzu. - vgl. Joh 19:24 (a) Ps 22:19
36Und sie sassen dort und bewachten ihn.
37Und sie hefteten über seinem Haupte die Tafel mit der Angabe seiner Schuld an: Dies ist Jesus, der König der Juden.
38Dann wurden mit ihm zwei Räuber gekreuzigt, einer zur Rechten und einer zur Linken. (a) Jes 53:12
39Die Vorübergehenden aber lästerten ihn, schüttelten die Köpfe (a) Ps 22:8; 109:25
40und sagten: Der du den Tempel zerstörst und in drei Tagen aufbaust, rette dich selbst, wenn du der Sohn Gottes bist, und steige vom Kreuze herab! (a) Mt 26:61; 4:3 6; Joh 2:19
41Ebenso spotteten die Hohenpriester samt den Schriftgelehrten und Ältesten und sagten:
42Andre hat er gerettet, sich selbst kann er nicht retten. Er ist der König Israels, er steige jetzt vom Kreuz herab, und wir wollen an ihn glauben.
43"Er hat auf Gott vertraut, der helfe ihm jetzt heraus, wenn er ihn liebhat." Er hat ja gesagt: Ich bin Gottes Sohn. (a) Ps 22:9
44In der gleichen Weise schmähten ihn aber auch die Räuber, die mit ihm gekreuzigt worden waren.
45ABER von der sechsten Stunde an kam eine Finsternis über die ganze Erde bis zur neunten Stunde.
46Um die neunte Stunde aber schrie Jesus laut auf: "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" das heisst: Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen? (a) Ps 22:2
47Als das einige von den dort Stehenden hörten, sagten sie: Dieser ruft den Elia.
48Und alsbald lief einer von ihnen, nahm einen Schwamm, füllte ihn mit Essig, steckte ihn auf ein Rohr und gab ihm zu trinken. (a) Ps 69:22
49Die übrigen aber sagten: Halt, lasset uns sehen, ob Elia kommt, um ihn zu retten!
50Da schrie Jesus abermals mit lauter Stimme und gab den Geist auf.
51Und siehe, der Vorhang im Tempel zerriss von oben bis unten in zwei Stücke, und die Erde erbebte, und die Felsen zerrissen, (a) 2Mo 26:31; Heb 10:19 20
52und die Grüfte öffneten sich, und viele Leiber der entschlafenen Heiligen wurden auferweckt;
53und sie kamen nach seiner Auferweckung aus den Grüften hervor, gingen in die heilige Stadt und erschienen vielen.
54Als aber der Hauptmann und die, welche mit ihm Jesus bewachten, das Erdbeben sahen und was da geschah, fürchteten sie sich sehr und sagten: Dieser war in Wahrheit Gottes Sohn.
55Es sahen aber dort viele Frauen von ferne zu, die Jesus von Galiläa her gefolgt waren, um ihm zu dienen; (a) Lu 8:2 3
56und unter diesen waren Maria aus Magdala und Maria, die Mutter des Jakobus und Joses, und die Mutter der Söhne des Zebedäus.
57ALS es aber Abend geworden war, kam ein reicher Mann aus Arimathäa mit Namen Joseph, der ebenfalls ein Jünger Jesu geworden war.
58Dieser ging zu Pilatus und erbat sich den Leib Jesu. Da befahl Pilatus, ihn auszuliefern. (a) 5Mo 21:23
59Und Joseph nahm den Leib, wickelte ihn in reine Leinwand,
60legte ihn in seine neue Gruft, die er im Felsen hatte aushauen lassen, wälzte einen grossen Stein vor die Türe der Gruft und ging hinweg. (a) Jes 53:9
61Es waren aber dort Maria aus Magdala und die andre Maria, die sassen dem Grabe gegenüber.
62AM Tage darnach aber, der auf den Rüsttag folgt, versammelten sich die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer bei Pilatus
63und sagten: Herr, wir haben daran gedacht, dass jener Verführer, als er noch lebte, gesagt hat: Nach drei Tagen werde ich auferweckt. (a) Mt 12:40; 16:21; 17:23; Joh 7:12
64Befiehl nun, dass das Grab bis zum dritten Tage bewacht werde, damit nicht etwa seine Jünger kommen, ihn stehlen und zum Volke sagen: Er ist von den Toten auferweckt worden, und der letzte Betrug schlimmer wird als der erste.
65Pilatus sagte zu ihnen: Ihr sollt eine Wache haben; gehet hin, bewachet es, so gut ihr könnt!
66Die aber gingen hin, versiegelten den Stein und bewachten das Grab gemeinsam mit der Wache.

1Y VENIDA la mañana, entraron en consejo todos los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los ancianos del pueblo, contra Jesús, para entregarle á muerte.
2Y le llevaron atado, y le entregaron á Poncio Pilato presidente.
3Entonces Judas, el que le había entregado, viendo que era condenado, volvió arrepentido las treinta piezas de plata á los príncipes de los sacerdotes y á los ancianos,
4Diciendo: Yo he pecado entregando la sangre inocente. Mas ellos dijeron: ¿Qué se nos da á nosotros? Viéraslo tú.
5Y arrojando las piezas de plata en el templo, partióse; y fué, y se ahorcó.
6Y los príncipes de los sacerdotes, tomando las piezas de plata, dijeron: No es lícito echarlas en el tesoro de los dones, porque es precio de sangre.
7Mas habido consejo, compraron con ellas el campo del alfarero, por sepultura para los extranjeros.
8Por lo cual fué llamado aquel campo, Campo de sangre, hasta el día de hoy.
9Entonces se cumplió lo que fué dicho por el profeta Jeremías, que dijo: Y tomaron las treinta piezas de plata, precio del apreciado, que fué apreciado por los hijos de Israel;
10Y las dieron para el campo del alfarero, como me ordenó el Señor.
11Y Jesús estuvo delante del presidente; y el presidente le preguntó, diciendo: ¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos? Y Jesús le dijo: Tú lo dices.
12Y siendo acusado por los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y por los ancianos, nada respondió.
13Pilato entonces le dice: ¿No oyes cuántas cosas testifican contra ti?
14Y no le respondió ni una palabra; de tal manera que el presidente se maravillaba mucho.
15Y en el día de la fiesta acostumbraba el presidente soltar al pueblo un preso, cual quisiesen.
16Y tenían entonces un preso famoso que se llamaba Barrabás.
17Y juntos ellos, les dijo Pilato: ¿Cuál queréis que os suelte? ¿á Barrabás, ó á Jesús que se dice el Cristo?
18Porque sabía que por envidia le habían entregado.
19Y estando él sentado en el tribunal, su mujer envió á él, diciendo: No tengas que ver con aquel justo; porque hoy he padecido muchas cosas en sueños por causa de él.
20Mas los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos, persuadieron al pueblo que pidiese á Barrabás, y á Jesús matase.
21Y respondiendo el presidente les dijo: ¿Cuál de los dos queréis que os suelte? Y ellos dijeron: A Barrabás.
22Pilato les dijo: ¿Qué pues haré de Jesús que se dice el Cristo? Dícenle todos: Sea crucificado.
23Y el presidente les dijo: Pues ¿qué mal ha hecho? Mas ellos gritaban más, diciendo: Sea crucificado.
24Y viendo Pilato que nada adelantaba, antes se hacía más alboroto, tomando agua se lavó las manos delante del pueblo, diciendo: Inocente soy yo de la sangre de este justo: veréislo vosotros.
25Y respondiendo todo el pueblo, dijo: Su sangre sea sobre nosotros, y sobre nuestros hijos.
26Entonces les soltó á Barrabás: y habiendo azotado á Jesús, le entregó para ser crucificado.
27Entonces los soldados del presidente llevaron á Jesús al pretorio, y juntaron á él toda la cuadrilla;
28Y desnudándole, le echaron encima un manto de grana;
29Y pusieron sobre su cabeza una corona tejida de espinas, y una caña en su mano derecha; é hincando la rodilla delante de él, le burlaban, diciendo: ¡Salve, Rey de los Judíos!
30Y escupiendo en él, tomaron la caña, y le herían en la cabeza.
31Y después que le hubieron escarnecido, le desnudaron el manto, y le vistieron de sus vestidos, y le llevaron para crucificarle.
32Y saliendo, hallaron á un Cireneo, que se llamaba Simón: á éste cargaron para que llevase su cruz.
33Y como llegaron al lugar que se llama Gólgotha, que es dicho, El lugar de la calavera,
34Le dieron á beber vinagre mezclado con hiel; y gustando, no quiso beberlo.
35Y después que le hubieron crucificado, repartieron sus vestidos, echando suertes: para que se cumpliese lo que fué dicho por el profeta: Se repartieron mis vestidos, y sobre mi ropa echaron suertes.
36Y sentados le guardaban allí.
37Y pusieron sobre su cabeza su causa escrita: ESTE ES JESUS EL REY DE LOS JUDIOS.
38Entonces crucificaron con él dos ladrones, uno á la derecha, y otro á la izquierda.
39Y los que pasaban, le decían injurias, meneando sus cabezas,
40Y diciendo: Tú, el que derribas el templo, y en tres días lo reedificas, sálvate á ti mismo: si eres Hijo de Dios, desciende de la cruz.
41De esta manera también los príncipes de los sacerdotes, escarneciendo con los escribas y los Fariseos y los ancianos, decían:
42A otros salvó, á sí mismo no puede salvar: si es el Rey de Israel, descienda ahora de la cruz, y creeremos en él.
43Confió en Dios: líbrele ahora si le quiere: porque ha dicho: Soy Hijo de Dios.
44Lo mismo también le zaherían los ladrones que estaban crucificados con él.
45Y desde la hora de sexta fueron tinieblas sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora de nona.
46Y cerca de la hora de nona, Jesús exclamó con grande voz, diciendo: Eli, Eli, ¿lama sabachtani? Esto es: Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?
47Y algunos de los que estaban allí, oyéndolo, decían: A Elías llama éste.
48Y luego, corriendo uno de ellos, tomó una esponja, y la hinchió de vinagre, y poniéndola en una caña, dábale de beber.
49Y los otros decían: Deja, veamos si viene Elías á librarle.
50Mas Jesús, habiendo otra vez exclamado con grande voz, dió el espíritu.
51Y he aquí, el velo del templo se rompió en dos, de alto á bajo: y la tierra tembló, y las piedras se hendieron;
52Y abriéronse los sepulcros, y muchos cuerpos de santos que habían dormido, se levantaron;
53Y salidos de los sepulcros, después de su resurrección, vinieron á la santa ciudad, y aparecieron á muchos.
54Y el centurión, y los que estaban con él guardando á Jesús, visto el terremoto, y las cosas que habían sido hechas, temieron en gran manera, diciendo: Verdaderamente Hijo de Dios era éste.
55Y estaban allí muchas mujeres mirando de lejos, las cuales habían seguido de Galilea á Jesús, sirviéndole:
56Entre las cuales estaban María Magdalena, y María la madre de Jacobo y de José, y la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo.
57Y como fué la tarde del día, vino un hombre rico de Arimatea, llamado José, el cual también había sido discípulo de Jesús.
58Este llegó á Pilato, y pidió el cuerpo de Jesús: entonces Pilato mandó que se le diese el cuerpo.
59Y tomando José el cuerpo, lo envolvió en una sábana limpia,
60Y lo puso en su sepulcro nuevo, que había labrado en la peña: y revuelta una grande piedra á la puerta del sepulcro, se fué.
61Y estaban allí María Magdalena, y la otra María, sentadas delante del sepulcro.
62Y el siguiente día, que es después de la preparación, se juntaron los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los Fariseos á Pilato,
63Diciendo: Señor, nos acordamos que aquel engañador dijo, viviendo aún: Después de tres días resucitaré.
64Manda, pues, que se asegure el sepulcro hasta el día tercero; porque no vengan sus discípulos de noche, y le hurten, y digan al pueblo: Resucitó de los muertos. Y será el postrer error peor que el primero.
65Y Pilato les dijo: Tenéis una guardia: id, aseguradlo como sabéis.
66Y yendo ellos, aseguraron el sepulcro, sellando la piedra, con la guardia.

1When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
2And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
3Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
5And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
6And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
7And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in.
8Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.
9Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;
10And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.
11And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.
12And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
13Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?
14And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.
15Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.
16And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
17Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
18For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
19When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.
20But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
21The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
22Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
23And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
24When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
25Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
26Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
27Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
28And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
29And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!
30And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.
31And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
32And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.
33And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
34They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.
35And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
36And sitting down they watched him there;
37And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
39And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,
40And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.
41Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,
42He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
43He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.
44The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.
45Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
47Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
48And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
50Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
55And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
56Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.
57When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathæa, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple:
58He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
59And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
60And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.
61And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
62Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,
63Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
64Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
65Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
66So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

1Now when morning had come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
2They bound him, led him away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor.
3Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that Jesus was condemned, felt remorse, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4saying, “I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? You see to it.”
5He threw down the pieces of silver in the sanctuary and departed. Then he went away and hanged himself.
6The chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It’s not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.”
7They took counsel, and bought the potter’s field with them to bury strangers in.
8Therefore that field has been called “The Field of Blood” to this day.
9Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him upon whom a price had been set, whom some of the children of Israel priced,
10and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”
11Now Jesus stood before the governor; and the governor asked him, saying, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus said to him, “So you say.”
12When he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.
13Then Pilate said to him, “Don’t you hear how many things they testify against you?”
14He gave him no answer, not even one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
15Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the multitude one prisoner whom they desired.
16They had then a notable prisoner called Barabbas.
17When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”
18For he knew that because of envy they had delivered him up.
19While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of him.”
20Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes to ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus.
21But the governor answered them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” They said, “Barabbas!”
22Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do to Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said to him, “Let him be crucified!”
23But the governor said, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they cried out exceedingly, saying, “Let him be crucified!”
24So when Pilate saw that nothing was being gained, but rather that a disturbance was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous person. You see to it.”
25All the people answered, “May his blood be on us and on our children!”
26Then he released Barabbas to them, but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified.
27Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered the whole garrison together against him.
28They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him.
29They braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”
30They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head.
31When they had mocked him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.
32As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they compelled him to go with them, that he might carry his cross.
33When they came to a place called “Golgotha”, that is to say, “The place of a skull,”
34they gave him sour wine to drink mixed with gall. When he had tasted it, he would not drink.
35When they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among them, casting lots,
36and they sat and watched him there.
37They set up over his head the accusation against him written, “THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
38Then there were two robbers crucified with him, one on his right hand and one on the left.
39Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads
40and saying, “You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”
41Likewise the chief priests also mocking with the scribes, the Pharisees, and the elders, said,
42“He saved others, but he can’t save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.
43He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
44The robbers also who were crucified with him cast on him the same reproach.
45Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.
46About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lima sabachthani?” That is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
47Some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.”
48Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave him a drink.
49The rest said, “Let him be. Let’s see whether Elijah comes to save him.”
50Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit.
51Behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split.
52The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;
53and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many.
54Now the centurion and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were done, were terrified, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”
55Many women were there watching from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him.
56Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.
57When evening had come, a rich man from Arimathaea named Joseph, who himself was also Jesus’ disciple, came.
58This man went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up.
59Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth
60and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock. Then he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.
61Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb.
62Now on the next day, which was the day after the Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together to Pilate,
63saying, “Sir, we remember what that deceiver said while he was still alive: ‘After three days I will rise again.’
64Command therefore that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples come at night and steal him away, and tell the people, ‘He is risen from the dead;’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”
65Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can.”
66So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone.
