1Então Jesus disse ao povo e aos seus discípulos:
2“Os mestres da lei e os fariseus têm autoridade para explicar a Lei de Moisés!
3Obedeçam ao que eles dizem, mas não sigam o exemplo deles. Porque eles não fazem o que mandam vocês fazerem.
4Exigem de vocês coisas pesadas, mas eles mesmos não estão dispostos a ajudá-los, nem ao menos a levantar um dedo para carregar esses fardos.
5“Tudo o que fazem é para se mostrar. Eles se fingem de santos, levam afixados aos braços extensas orações com versículos das Escrituras e alongam as barras dos seus mantos.
6E como gostam de tomar os principais lugares nos banquetes e os assentos mais importantes na sinagoga!
7Como apreciam a consideração que se presta a eles nas praças e serem chamados de ‘mestre’!
8“Nunca deixem que alguém chame vocês de ‘mestre’, porque existe um só Mestre e todos vocês estão no mesmo nível, como irmãos.
9Não se dirijam a ninguém aqui na terra chamando-o de ‘Pai’, porque vocês só têm um Pai, que está nos céus.
10E não se deixem chamar de ‘chefe’, porque somente um é o chefe de vocês, isto é, o Messias.
11“Quanto mais humilde for o serviço de vocês aos outros, maiores vocês serão. Para ser o maior de todos, é preciso ser servo.
12Mas aqueles que se acham grandes sofrerão humilhação; e aqueles que se humilham serão engrandecidos.
13“Ai de vocês, fariseus, e demais mestres da lei! Hipócritas! Pois vocês não entram no Reino dos céus e não deixam os outros entrarem.
14“Ai de vocês, mestres da lei e fariseus, hipócritas! Vocês parecem santos, com todas as suas longas orações públicas nas ruas, enquanto exploram as viúvas nas casas delas. Por isso o castigo de vocês será maior!
15“Ai de vocês, mestres da lei e fariseus, hipócritas, porque vão a qualquer distância, percorrendo terra e mar para converter alguém, e depois fazem a mesma pessoa duas vezes mais digna do inferno do que vocês.
16“Ai de vocês, guias cegos, porque dizem: ‘Se alguém jurar “pelo templo de Deus” não tem importância — pode-se quebrar tal voto, mas um juramento “pelo ouro do templo” deve ser cumprido’.
17“Cegos insensatos! Que é maior, o ouro ou o templo que santifica o ouro?
18E vocês dizem que um juramento feito ‘pelo altar’ pode ser quebrado, mas um juramento feito ‘pelas ofertas que estão sobre o altar’ deve ser cumprido!
19Cegos! Pois que é mais importante: a oferta que está sobre o altar, ou o próprio altar que santifica a oferta?
20Portanto, aquele que jura ‘pelo altar’, está jurando por ele e por tudo quanto está sobre ele,
21e quando jura ‘pelo templo’, jura por ele e por aquele que mora nele.
22E aquele que jura ‘pelos céus’, está jurando pelo trono de Deus e por aquele que está sentado nele.
23“Ai de vocês, fariseus e mestres da lei, hipócritas! Vocês dão o dízimo até da folha de hortelã, da erva-doce e do cominho, mas se esquecem das coisas importantes — a justiça, a misericórdia e a fidelidade. Sim, vocês devem dar o dízimo, mas não devem deixar de fazer as coisas mais importantes.
24Guias cegos! Vocês coam um mosquito e engolem um camelo.
25“Ai de vocês, fariseus e mestres da lei, hipócritas! Vocês são tão cuidadosos em limpar a parte exterior da taça e do prato, mas o interior está imundo, cheio de ganância e de cobiça.
26Fariseus cegos! Limpem primeiro o interior da taça e do prato, e então o seu exterior também ficará limpo.
27“Ai de vocês, fariseus e mestres da lei! Vocês são como belos túmulos pintados: bonitos por fora, mas por dentro cheios de ossos de homens mortos, de podridão e sujeira.
28Vocês procuram parecer homens santos, mas por baixo desses mantos de bondade estão corações manchados de toda espécie de fingimento e maldade.
29“Ai de vocês, fariseus e mestres da lei, hipócritas! Pois constroem monumentos aos profetas mortos pelos seus pais, depositam flores nos túmulos dos homens bondosos que eles destruíram,
30e dizem: ‘É claro que se tivéssemos vivido no tempo dos nossos antepassados, não teríamos feito o que eles fizeram; não teríamos derramado o sangue dos profetas’.
31Dizendo isso, vocês estão acusando-se a si mesmos de serem os filhos dos homens perversos que assassinaram os profetas.
32E vocês estão seguindo os passos deles, enchendo a medida da maldade dos seus antepassados.
33“Serpentes! Filhos de víboras! Como vocês escaparão da condenação do inferno?
34Eu enviarei a vocês profetas, homens sábios e mestres, e vocês matarão alguns pela crucificação, ferirão os outros com chicotes em suas sinagogas, e perseguirão todos de cidade em cidade.
35E vocês se tornarão culpados de todo o sangue dos homens justos, desde Abel até o sangue de Zacarias, filho de Baraquias, que vocês mataram no templo, entre o altar e o santuário.
36Sim, toda a condenação acumulada nestes séculos cairá sobre esta geração.
37“Jerusalém, Jerusalém, cidade que mata os profetas e apedreja todos aqueles que Deus lhe envia! Quantas vezes eu quis juntar os seus filhos como uma galinha junta seus pintinhos debaixo das asas, mas vocês não quiseram.
38E agora a sua casa será deixada ao abandono.
39Pois eu digo isto a vocês: nunca mais me verão, até que digam: ‘Bendito é o que vem em nome do Senhor’ ”.

1ENTONCES habló Jesús á las gentes y á sus discípulos,
2Diciendo: Sobre la cátedra de Moisés se sentaron los escribas y los Fariseos:
3Así que, todo lo que os dijeren que guardéis, guardadlo y hacedlo; mas no hagáis conforme á sus obras: porque dicen, y no hacen.
4Porque atan cargas pesadas y difíciles de llevar, y las ponen sobre los hombros de los hombres; mas ni aun con su dedo las quieren mover.
5Antes, todas sus obras hacen para ser mirados de los hombres; porque ensanchan sus filacterias, y extienden los flecos de sus mantos;
6Y aman los primeros asientos en las cenas, y las primeras sillas en las sinagogas;
7Y las salutaciones en las plazas, y ser llamados de los hombres Rabbí, Rabbí.
8Mas vosotros, no queráis ser llamados Rabbí; porque uno es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo; y todos vosotros sois hermanos.
9Y vuestro padre no llaméis á nadie en la tierra; porque uno es vuestro Padre, el cual está en los cielos.
10Ni seáis llamados maestros; porque uno es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo.
11El que es el mayor de vosotros, sea vuestro siervo.
12Porque el que se ensalzare, será humillado; y el que se humillare, será ensalzado.
13Mas ¡ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque cerráis el reino de los cielos delante de los hombres; que ni vosotros entráis, ni á los que están entrando dejáis entrar.
14¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque coméis las casas de las viudas, y por pretexto hacéis larga oración: por esto llevaréis más grave juicio.
15¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque rodeáis la mar y la tierra por hacer un prosélito; y cuando fuere hecho, le hacéis hijo del infierno doble más que vosotros.
16¡Ay de vosotros, guías ciegos! que decís: Cualquiera que jurare por el templo es nada; mas cualquiera que jurare por el oro del templo, deudor es.
17¡Insensatos y ciegos! porque ¿cuál es mayor, el oro, ó el templo que santifica al oro?
18Y: Cualquiera que jurare por el altar, es nada; mas cualquiera que jurare por el presente que está sobre él, deudor es.
19¡Necios y ciegos! porque, ¿cuál es mayor, el presente, ó el altar que santifica al presente?
20Pues el que jurare por el altar, jura por él, y por todo lo que está sobre él;
21Y el que jurare por el templo, jura por él, y por Aquél que habita en él;
22Y el que jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios, y por Aquél que está sentado sobre él.
23¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque diezmáis la menta y el eneldo y el comino, y dejasteis lo que es lo más grave de la ley, es á saber, el juicio y la misericordia y la fe: esto era menester hacer, y no dejar lo otro.
24¡Guías ciegos, que coláis el mosquito, mas tragáis el camello!
25¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque limpiáis lo que está de fuera del vaso y del plato; mas de dentro están llenos de robo y de injusticia.
26¡Fariseo ciego, limpia primero lo de dentro del vaso y del plato, para que también lo de fuera se haga limpio!
27¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque sois semejantes á sepulcros blanqueados, que de fuera, á la verdad, se muestran hermosos, mas de dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda suciedad.
28Así también vosotros de fuera, á la verdad, os mostráis justos á los hombres; mas de dentro, llenos estáis de hipocresía é iniquidad.
29¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y Fariseos, hipócritas! porque edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas, y adornáis los monumentos de los justos,
30Y decís: Si fuéramos en los días de nuestros padres, no hubiéramos sido sus compañeros en la sangre de los profetas.
31Así que, testimonio dais á vosotros mismos, que sois hijos de aquellos que mataron á los profetas.
32¡Vosotros también henchid la medida de vuestros padres!
33¡Serpientes, generación de víboras! ¿cómo evitaréis el juicio del infierno?
34Por tanto, he aquí, yo envío á vosotros profetas, y sabios, y escribas: y de ellos, á unos mataréis y crucificaréis, y á otros de ellos azotaréis en vuestras sinagogas, y perseguiréis de ciudad en ciudad:
35Para que venga sobre vosotros toda la sangre justa que se ha derramado sobre la tierra, desde la sangre de Abel el justo, hasta la sangre de Zacarías, hijo de Barachîas, al cual matasteis entre el templo y el altar.
36De cierto os digo que todo esto vendrá sobre esta generación.
37¡Jerusalem, Jerusalem, que matas á los profetas, y apedreas á los que son enviados á ti! ¡cuántas veces quise juntar tus hijos, como la gallina junta sus pollos debajo de las alas, y no quisiste!
38He aquí vuestra casa os es dejada desierta.
39Porque os digo que desde ahora no me veréis, hasta que digáis: Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor.

1Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,
2Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat:
3All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
14Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
28Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
30And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
32Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
34Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

1Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,
2saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat.
3All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.
4For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.
5But they do all their works to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the fringes of their garments,
6and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,
7the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men.
8But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi’, for one is your teacher, the Christ, and all of you are brothers.
9Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.
10Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Christ.
11But he who is greatest among you will be your servant.
12Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
13“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows’ houses, and as a pretense you make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
14“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men; for you don’t enter in yourselves, neither do you allow those who are entering in to enter.
15Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as yourselves.
16“Woe to you, you blind guides, who say, ‘Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated.’
17You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?
18And, ‘Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obligated.’
19You blind fools! For which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift?
20He therefore who swears by the altar, swears by it and by everything on it.
21He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who has been living in it.
22He who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits on it.
23“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy, and faith. But you ought to have done these, and not to have left the other undone.
24You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel!
25“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and unrighteousness.
26You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the platter, that its outside may become clean also.
27“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitened tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness.
28Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the tombs of the righteous,
30and say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we wouldn’t have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.’
31Therefore you testify to yourselves that you are children of those who killed the prophets.
32Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers.
33You serpents, you offspring of vipers, how will you escape the judgment of Gehenna?
34Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets, wise men, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify; and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city,
35that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom you killed between the sanctuary and the altar.
36Most certainly I tell you, all these things will come upon this generation.
37“Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I would have gathered your children together, even as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you would not!
38Behold, your house is left to you desolate.
39For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”
