1ER rief aber die Zwölf zusammen und gab ihnen Macht und Gewalt über alle Dämonen und zur Heilung von Krankheiten;
2und er sandte sie aus, das Reich Gottes zu predigen und zu heilen.
3Und er sprach zu ihnen: Nehmet nichts mit auf den Weg, weder Stab noch Tasche noch Brot noch Geld, noch soll einer zwei Röcke haben.
4Und in dem Hause, in das ihr hineingeht, da bleibet und von da ziehet weiter!
5Und wo immer sie euch nicht aufnehmen, ziehet aus jener Stadt weiter und schüttelt den Staub von euren Füssen, zum Zeugnis wider sie!
6Da zogen sie aus und wanderten von Dorf zu Dorf, indem sie überall das Evangelium verkündigten und heilten.
7Der Fürst Herodes aber hörte alles, was geschah; und er war ratlos, weil von etlichen gesagt wurde, Johannes sei von den Toten auferweckt worden, (a) Mt 14:1 2; Mr 6:14-16
8von etlichen aber, Elia sei erschienen, von andern aber, einer der alten Propheten sei auferstanden. (a) Mt 16:14
9Da sagte Herodes: Den Johannes habe ich enthaupten lassen; wer ist aber dieser, über den ich solche Dinge höre? Und er suchte ihn zu sehen. (a) Lu 23:8
10Und die Apostel kehrten zurück und erzählten ihm alles, was sie getan hatten. UND er nahm sie mit sich und zog sich abseits in eine Stadt namens Bethsaida zurück. (a) Mr 6:30; Mt 14:13
11Als aber die Volksmenge es gewahr wurde, folgte sie ihm nach; und er liess sie zu sich und redete zu ihnen vom Reiche Gottes, und die, welche der Heilung bedurften, machte er gesund.
12Aber der Tag fing an, sich zu neigen. Da traten die Zwölf herzu und sagten zu ihm: Entlass das Volk, damit sie in die Dörfer und Gehöfte ringsumher gehen und einkehren und Speise finden; denn hier sind wir an einem öden Ort.
13Doch er sprach zu ihnen: Gebet ihr ihnen zu essen! Sie aber sagten: Wir haben nicht mehr als fünf Brote und zwei Fische; es sei denn, dass wir hingehen und für all dieses Volk Speise kaufen sollen. (1) V. 13-17: 2Kön 4:42-44
14Es waren nämlich etwa fünftausend Männer. Er sprach aber zu seinen Jüngern: Lasset sie sich lagern in Gruppen etwa zu je fünfzig!
15Und sie taten so und liessen alle sich lagern.
16Da nahm er die fünf Brote und die zwei Fische, blickte zum Himmel auf, sprach das Dankgebet darüber, brach sie und gab sie den Jüngern, sie dem Volke vorzulegen.
17Und sie assen und wurden alle satt. Und es wurde aufgehoben, was ihnen an Brocken übrigblieb, zwölf Körbe (voll).
18UND es begab sich, als er für sich allein betete, waren die Jünger bei ihm, und er fragte sie: Für wen hält mich die Volksmenge?
19Da antworteten sie und sagten: Für Johannes den Täufer, andre für Elia, noch andre (meinen), einer der alten Propheten sei auferstanden.
20Darauf sagte er zu ihnen: Ihr aber, für wen haltet ihr mich? Da antwortete Petrus und sprach: Für den Gesalbten Gottes.
21Er aber gebot ihnen mit strengem Befehl, dies niemandem zu sagen,
22indem er sprach: Der Sohn des Menschen muss viel leiden und verworfen werden von den Ältesten und Hohenpriestern und Schriftgelehrten und getötet werden, und am dritten Tage (muss er) auferweckt werden. (a) Lu 17:25; 18:32 33
23ER sprach aber zu allen: Wenn jemand mit mir gehen will, verleugne er sich selbst und nehme täglich sein Kreuz auf sich und folge mir nach! (a) Lu 14:27
24Denn wer sein Leben retten will, der wird es verlieren; wer aber sein Leben verliert um meinetwillen, der wird es retten. (a) Lu 17:33; Mt 10:39; Joh 12:25
25Denn was nützt es dem Menschen, wenn er die ganze Welt gewinnt, sich selbst aber ins (ewige) Verderben bringt oder an sich selbst die Strafe leidet?
26Denn wer sich meiner und meiner Worte schämt, dessen wird sich der Sohn des Menschen schämen, wenn er kommen wird in seiner Herrlichkeit und in der (Herrlichkeit) des Vaters und der heiligen Engel. (a) Mt 10:33
27Ich sage euch aber der Wahrheit gemäss: Es sind einige unter denen, die hier stehen, die den Tod nicht schmecken werden, bis sie das Reich Gottes gesehen haben.
28ES begab sich aber etwa acht Tage nach diesen Reden, da nahm er Petrus und Johannes und Jakobus mit sich und stieg auf den Berg, um zu beten. (a) Lu 8:51
29Und während er betete, veränderte sich das Aussehen seines Angesichtes, und sein Gewand wurde strahlend weiss.
30Und siehe, zwei Männer redeten mit ihm - es waren Mose und Elia -
31die erschienen in Lichtglanz und redeten von seinem Lebensausgang, den er in Jerusalem vollenden sollte. (a) Lu 18:31
32Petrus aber und seine Gefährten waren vom Schlaf überwältigt. Als sie jedoch erwachten, sahen sie seinen Lichtglanz und die zwei Männer, die bei ihm standen. (a) 2Pe 1:16-18; Joh 1:14
33Und es begab sich, als diese von ihm schieden, da sagte Petrus zu Jesus: Meister, es ist gut, dass wir hier sind, und wir wollen drei Hütten machen, dir eine und Mose eine und Elia eine; und er wusste nicht, was er sagte.
34Während er so redete, kam eine Wolke und überschattete sie. Sie fürchteten sich aber, als sie in die Wolke hineinkamen.
35Und eine Stimme erscholl aus der Wolke, die sprach: "Dies ist mein auserwählter Sohn, auf ihn höret!" (a) Lu 3:22; Ps 2:7
36Und während die Stimme erscholl, fand es sich, dass Jesus allein war. Und sie schwiegen und teilten in jenen Tagen niemandem etwas von dem mit, was sie gesehen hatten.
37ES begab sich aber tags darauf, als sie von dem Berge hinabgingen, da kam ihm viel Volk entgegen.
38Und siehe, ein Mann aus dem Volke rief: Meister, ich bitte dich, nimm dich meines Sohnes an, denn er ist mein einziger!
39Und siehe, ein Geist ergreift ihn, und auf einmal schreit er, und er reisst ihn hin und her, sodass er schäumt, und lässt kaum einmal davon ab, ihn zu quälen.
40Und ich habe deine Jünger gebeten, dass sie ihn austreiben möchten, und sie vermochten es nicht.
41Da antwortete Jesus und sprach: O du ungläubiges und verkehrtes Geschlecht, wie lange soll ich bei euch sein und euch ertragen? Bringe deinen Sohn hierher!
42Aber noch während er herbeikam, riss und zerrte ihn der Dämon herum. Da bedrohte Jesus den unreinen Geist und heilte den Knaben und gab ihn seinem Vater wieder.
43Es erstaunten aber alle über die grosse Macht Gottes. WÄHREND sich aber alle verwunderten über alles, was er tat, sprach er zu seinen Jüngern:
44Fasset ihr zu Ohren diese Worte, nämlich: Der Sohn des Menschen muss ausgeliefert werden in die Hände der Menschen! (1) V. 22; Mt 16:21
45Sie aber verstanden dieses Wort nicht, und es war vor ihnen verborgen, damit sie es nicht begriffen; und sie fürchteten sich, ihn über dieses Wort zu fragen. (a) Lu 18:34
46ES stieg aber ein Gedanke in ihnen auf, wer wohl der Grösste unter ihnen wäre. (a) Lu 22:24
47Da aber Jesus den Gedanken ihres Herzens kannte, nahm er ein Kind, stellte es neben sich
48und sprach zu ihnen: Wer dieses Kind um meines Namens willen aufnimmt, der nimmt mich auf; und wer mich aufnimmt, der nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat. Denn wer der Kleinste unter euch allen ist, der ist gross. (a) Lu 22:26; Mt 20:26
49JOHANNES aber begann und sprach: Meister, wir sahen einen, der in deinem Namen Dämonen austrieb, und wir wehrten es ihm; denn er hält sich nicht zu uns.
50Jesus aber sprach zu ihm: Wehret es nicht! denn wer nicht wider euch ist, der ist für euch. (a) Lu 11:23; Php 1:18
51ES begab sich aber, als sich die Tage vollendeten, dass er in den Himmel emporgehoben werden sollte, da richtete er sein Angesicht nach Jerusalem, um dorthin zu reisen. (a) Mt 19:1; Mr 10:32; Lu 13:22; 17:11
52Und er sandte Boten vor sich her. Und sie gingen hin und kamen in ein Dorf der Samariter, um ihm Herberge zu bereiten.
53Und sie nahmen ihn nicht auf, weil sein Angesicht nach Jerusalem gerichtet war. (a) Joh 4:9
54Als das die Jünger Jakobus und Johannes sahen, sagten sie: Herr, willst du, dass wir Feuer vom Himmel fallen und sie verzehren heissen? (1) viele alte Textzeugen fügen hinzu: "wie auch Elia getan hat". (a) 2Kön 1:10 12
55Er aber wandte sich um und bedrohte sie - und sprach: Ihr wisst nicht, welches Geistes ihr seid. (a) Mr 3:17
56Denn der Sohn des Menschen ist nicht gekommen: Menschenleben zu verderben: sondern zu retten - Und sie begaben sich in ein andres Dorf. (1) ein alte Textzeugen fügen diese Worte V 55 56 hinzu
57UND als sie wanderten, sagte einer auf dem Wege zu ihm: Ich will dir nachfolgen, wohin du auch gehst.
58Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: Die Füchse haben Gruben und die Vögel des Himmels (haben) Nester; der Sohn des Menschen dagegen hat nicht, wo er sein Haupt hinlegen kann.
59Er sprach aber zu einem andern: Folge mir nach! Der antwortete: Erlaube mir, zuvor hinzugehen und meinen Vater zu begraben.
60Da sprach er zu ihm: Lass die Toten ihre Toten begraben; du aber geh hin und verkündige das Reich Gottes! (a) 4Mo 6:6 7
61Es sagte aber auch ein andrer: Ich will dir nachfolgen, Herr; zuvor jedoch erlaube mir, von denen, die in meinem Hause sind, Abschied zu nehmen. (a) 1Kön 19:20
62Da sprach Jesus zu ihm: Niemand, der seine Hand an den Pflug legt und zurückblickt, ist tauglich für das Reich Gottes. (a) Lu 17:32 33

1Y JUNTANDO á sus doce discípulos, les dió virtud y potestad sobre todos los demonios, y que sanasen enfermedades.
2Y los envió á que predicasen el reino de Dios, y que sanasen á los enfermos.
3Y les dice: No toméis nada para el camino, ni báculo, ni alforja, ni pan, ni dinero; ni tengáis dos vestidos cada uno.
4Y en cualquiera casa en que entrareis, quedad allí, y de allí salid.
5Y todos los que no os recibieren, saliéndoos de aquella ciudad, aun el polvo sacudid de vuestros pies en testimonio contra ellos.
6Y saliendo, rodeaban por todas las aldeas, anunciando el evangelio, y sanando por todas partes.
7Y oyó Herodes el tetrarca todas las cosas que hacía; y estaba en duda, porque decían algunos: Juan ha resucitado de los muertos;
8Y otros: Elías ha aparecido; y otros: Algún profeta de los antiguos ha resucitado.
9Y dijo Herodes: A Juan yo degollé: ¿quién pues será éste, de quien yo oigo tales cosas? Y procuraba verle.
10Y vueltos los apóstoles, le contaron todas las cosas que habían hecho. Y tomándolos, se retiró aparte á un lugar desierto de la ciudad que se llama Bethsaida.
11Y como lo entendieron las gentes, le siguieron; y él las recibió, y les hablaba del reino de Dios, y sanaba á los que tenían necesidad de cura.
12Y el día había comenzado á declinar; y llegándose los doce, le dijeron: Despide á las gentes, para que yendo á las aldeas y heredades de alrededor, procedan á alojarse y hallen viandas; porque aquí estamos en lugar desierto.
13Y les dice: Dadles vosotros de comer. Y dijeron ellos: No tenemos más que cinco panes y dos pescados, si no vamos nosotros á comprar viandas para toda esta compañía.
14Y eran como cinco mil hombres. Entonces dijo á sus discípulos: Hacedlos sentar en ranchos, de cincuenta en cincuenta.
15Y así lo hicieron, haciéndolos sentar á todos.
16Y tomando los cinco panes y los dos pescados, mirando al cielo los bendijo, y partió, y dió á sus discípulos para que pusiesen delante de las gentes.
17Y comieron todos, y se hartaron; y alzaron lo que les sobró, doce cestos de pedazos.
18Y aconteció que estando él solo orando, estaban con él los discípulos; y les preguntó diciendo: ¿Quién dicen las gentes que soy?
19Y ellos respondieron, y dijeron: Juan el Bautista; y otros, Elías; y otros, que algún profeta de los antiguos ha resucitado.
20Y les dijo: ¿Y vosotros, quién decís que soy? Entonces respondiendo Simón Pedro, dijo: El Cristo de Dios.
21Mas él, conminándolos, mandó que á nadie dijesen esto;
22Diciendo: Es necesario que el Hijo del hombre padezca muchas cosas, y sea desechado de los ancianos, y de los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y de los escribas, y que sea muerto, y resucite al tercer día.
23Y decía á todos: Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese á sí mismo, y tome su cruz cada día, y sígame.
24Porque cualquiera que quisiere salvar su vida, la perderá; y cualquiera que perdiere su vida por causa de mí, éste la salvará.
25Porque ¿qué aprovecha al hombre, si granjeare todo el mundo, y se pierda él á sí mismo, ó corra peligro de sí?
26Porque el que se avergonzare de mí y de mis palabras, de este tal el Hijo del hombre se avergonzará cuando viniere en su gloria, y del Padre, y de los santos ángeles.
27Y os digo en verdad, que hay algunos de los que están aquí, que no gustarán la muerte, hasta que vean el reino de Dios.
28Y aconteció como ocho días después de estas palabras, que tomó á Pedro y á Juan y á Jacobo, y subió al monte á orar.
29Y entre tanto que oraba, la apariencia de su rostro se hizo otra, y su vestido blanco y resplandeciente.
30Y he aquí dos varones que hablaban con él, los cuales eran Moisés y Elías;
31Que aparecieron en majestad, y hablaban de su salida, la cual había de cumplir en Jerusalem.
32Y Pedro y los que estaban con él, estaban cargados de sueño: y como despertaron, vieron su majestad, y á aquellos dos varones que estaban con él.
33Y aconteció, que apartándose ellos de él, Pedro dice á Jesús: Maestro, bien es que nos quedemos aquí: y hagamos tres pabellones, uno para ti, y uno para Moisés, y uno para Elías; no sabiendo lo que se decía.
34Y estando él hablando esto, vino una nube que los cubrió; y tuvieron temor, entrando ellos en la nube.
35Y vino una voz de la nube, que decía: Este es mi Hijo amado; á él oid.
36Y pasada aquella voz, Jesús fué hallado solo: y ellos callaron; y por aquellos días no dijeron nada á nadie de lo que habían visto.
37Y aconteció al día siguiente, que apartándose ellos del monte, gran compañía les salió al encuentro.
38Y he aquí, un hombre de la compañía clamó, diciendo: Maestro, ruégote que veas á mi hijo; que es el único que tengo:
39Y he aquí un espíritu le toma, y de repente da voces; y le despedaza y hace echar espuma, y apenas se aparta de él quebrantándole.
40Y rogué á tus discípulos que le echasen fuera, y no pudieron.
41Y respondiendo Jesús, dice: ¡Oh generación infiel y perversa! ¿hasta cuándo tengo de estar con vosotros, y os sufriré? Trae tu hijo acá.
42Y como aun se acercaba, el demonio le derribó y despedazó: mas Jesús increpó al espíritu inmundo, y sanó al muchacho, y se lo volvió á su padre.
43Y todos estaban atónitos de la grandeza de Dios. Y maravillándose todos de todas las cosas que hacía, dijo á sus discípulos:
44Poned vosotros en vuestros oídos estas palabras; porque ha de acontecer que el Hijo del hombre será entregado en manos de hombres.
45Mas ellos no entendían esta palabra, y les era encubierta para que no la entendiesen; y temían preguntarle de esta palabra.
46Entonces entraron en disputa, cuál de ellos sería el mayor.
47Mas Jesús, viendo los pensamientos del corazón de ellos, tomó un niño, y púsole junto á sí,
48Y les dice: Cualquiera que recibiere este niño en mi nombre, á mí recibe; y cualquiera que me recibiere á mí, recibe al que me envió; porque el que fuere el menor entre todos vosotros, éste será el grande.
49Entonces respondiendo Juan, dijo: Maestro, hemos visto á uno que echaba fuera demonios en tu nombre; y se lo prohibimos, porque no sigue con nosotros.
50Jesús le dijo: No se lo prohibáis; porque el que no es contra nosotros, por nosotros es.
51Y aconteció que, como se cumplió el tiempo en que había de ser recibido arriba, él afirmó su rostro para ir á Jerusalem.
52Y envió mensajeros delante de sí, los cuales fueron y entraron en una ciudad de los Samaritanos, para prevenirle.
53Mas no le recibieron, porque era su traza de ir á Jerusalem.
54Y viendo esto sus discípulos Jacobo y Juan, dijeron: Señor, ¿quieres que mandemos que descienda fuego del cielo, y los consuma, como hizo Elías?
55Entonces volviéndose él, los reprendió, diciendo: Vosotros no sabéis de qué espíritu sois;
56Porque el Hijo del hombre no ha venido para perder las almas de los hombres, sino para salvarlas. Y se fueron á otra aldea.
57Y aconteció que yendo ellos, uno le dijo en el camino: Señor, te seguiré donde quiera que fueres.
58Y le dijo Jesús: Las zorras tienen cuevas, y las aves de los cielos nidos; mas el Hijo del hombre no tiene donde recline la cabeza.
59Y dijo á otro: Sígueme. Y él dijo: Señor, déjame que primero vaya y entierre á mi padre.
60Y Jesús le dijo: Deja los muertos que entierren á sus muertos; y tú, ve, y anuncia el reino de Dios.
61Entonces también dijo otro: Te seguiré, Señor; mas déjame que me despida primero de los que están en mi casa.
62Y Jesús le dijo: Ninguno que poniendo su mano al arado mira atrás, es apto para el reino de Dios.

1Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.
2And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
3And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
4And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
5And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them.
6And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead;
8And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again.
9And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.
10And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.
11And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
12And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.
13But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.
14For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company.
15And they did so, and made them all sit down.
16Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.
17And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
18And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am?
19They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again.
20He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
21And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing;
22Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
24For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
25For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
26For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.
27But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
28And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.
29And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
30And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias:
31Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
32But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
33And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
34While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud.
35And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
36And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
37And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.
38And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.
39And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.
40And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
41And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.
42And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
43And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,
44Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.
45But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
46Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
47And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him,
48And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
49And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.
50And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
51And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem,
52And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
53And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
54And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
57And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest.
58And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
59And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.
60Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
61And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
62And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

1He called the twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
2He sent them out to preach God’s Kingdom and to heal the sick.
3He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey—no staffs, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money. Don’t have two tunics each.
4Into whatever house you enter, stay there, and depart from there.
5As many as don’t receive you, when you depart from that city, shake off even the dust from your feet for a testimony against them.”
6They departed and went throughout the villages, preaching the Good News and healing everywhere.
7Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him; and he was very perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,
8and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again.
9Herod said, “I beheaded John, but who is this about whom I hear such things?” He sought to see him.
10The apostles, when they had returned, told him what things they had done. He took them and withdrew apart to a desert region of a city called Bethsaida.
11But the multitudes, perceiving it, followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them of God’s Kingdom, and he cured those who needed healing.
12The day began to wear away; and the twelve came and said to him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and farms and lodge and get food, for we are here in a deserted place.”
13But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we should go and buy food for all these people.”
14For they were about five thousand men. He said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each.”
15They did so, and made them all sit down.
16He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to the sky, he blessed them, broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude.
17They ate and were all filled. They gathered up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over.
18As he was praying alone, the disciples were near him, and he asked them, “Who do the multitudes say that I am?”
19They answered, “‘John the Baptizer,’ but others say, ‘Elijah,’ and others, that one of the old prophets has risen again.”
20He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”
21But he warned them and commanded them to tell this to no one,
22saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.”
23He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
24For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake will save it.
25For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits his own self?
26For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels.
27But I tell you the truth: There are some of those who stand here who will in no way taste of death until they see God’s Kingdom.”
28About eight days after these sayings, he took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray.
29As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling.
30Behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah,
31who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
32Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.
33As they were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tents: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he said.
34While he said these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud.
35A voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!”
36When the voice came, Jesus was found alone. They were silent, and told no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.
37On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great multitude met him.
38Behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only born child.
39Behold, a spirit takes him, he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams; and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely.
40I begged your disciples to cast it out, and they couldn’t.”
41Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”
42While he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him violently. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.
43They were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marveling at all the things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,
44“Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man will be delivered up into the hands of men.”
45But they didn’t understand this saying. It was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
46An argument arose among them about which of them was the greatest.
47Jesus, perceiving the reasoning of their hearts, took a little child, and set him by his side,
48and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me. Whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For whoever is least among you all, this one will be great.”
49John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he doesn’t follow with us.”
50Jesus said to him, “Don’t forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.”
51It came to pass, when the days were near that he should be taken up, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem
52and sent messengers before his face. They went and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for him.
53They didn’t receive him, because he was traveling with his face set toward Jerusalem.
54When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky and destroy them, just as Elijah did?”
55But he turned and rebuked them, “You don’t know of what kind of spirit you are.
56For the Son of Man didn’t come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” They went to another village.
57As they went on the way, a certain man said to him, “I want to follow you wherever you go, Lord.”
58Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”
59He said to another, “Follow me!” But he said, “Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father.”
60But Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead, but you go and announce God’s Kingdom.”
61Another also said, “I want to follow you, Lord, but first allow me to say good-bye to those who are at my house.”
62But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for God’s Kingdom.”
