Veramente io so, che così va la bisogna, e che l'uomo paragonato con Dio non ha più giustizia.

Se ci vorrà venire a contesa con lui non potrà rendergli conto d'una cosa ogni mille.
Si quisiere contender con él, no le podrá responder á una cosa de mil.

Egli il saggio di mente, il forte in possanza; chi mai a lui contradisse, e potè aver pace?
El es sabio de corazón, y poderoso en fortaleza: ¿quién se endureció contra él, y quedó en paz?
He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath hardened himself against him, and hath prospered?
God is wise in heart, and mighty in strength. Who has hardened himself against him and prospered?
Egli trasporta le montagne, ed elle non se v'avveggono quand'ei nel suo furore le spiana.
Que arranca los montes con su furor, y no conocen quién los trastornó:
Which removeth the mountains, and they know not: which overturneth them in his anger.
He removes the mountains, and they don’t know it, when he overturns them in his anger.
Egli dal suo sito scuote la terra, e le sue fondamenta sono sommosse.
Que remueve la tierra de su lugar, y hace temblar sus columnas:
Which shaketh the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble.

Egli comanda al sole, e non nasce, e le stelle tiene egli chiuse come sotto sigillo.
Que manda al sol, y no sale; y sella las estrellas:
Which commandeth the sun, and it riseth not; and sealeth up the stars.

Egli solo distese i cicli, e cammina sui flutti del mare.
El que extiende solo los cielos, y anda sobre las alturas de la mar:

Egli creò e Arturo, e Orione, e le Hiadi, e le ascose parti del mezzodì.

Egli fa cose grandi, e incomprensibili, e miracolose, che non possono numerarsi.
El que hace cosas grandes é incomprensibles, y maravillosas, sin número.
Which doeth great things past finding out; yea, and wonders without number.

S'ei viene a me io noi veggo, e s'egli si parte io non me n'accorgo.
He aquí que él pasará delante de mí, y yo no lo veré; y pasará, y no lo entenderé.

Se egli repentinamente vuoi far disamina, chi rispondere a lui potrà? ovvero chi potrà dirgli: Perché fai così?
He aquí, arrebatará; ¿quién le hará restituir? ¿Quién le dirá, Qué haces?
Behold, he taketh away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What doest thou?
Behold, he snatches away. Who can hinder him? Who will ask him, ‘What are you doing?’
Egli è Dio, e all'ira di lui nessun può resistere, e sotto di lui si incurvano quei, che reggono il mondo.
Dios no tornará atrás su ira, y debajo de él se encorvan los que ayudan á los soberbios.
If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him.
“God will not withdraw his anger. The helpers of Rahab stoop under him.
Son io qualche cosa di grande, che possa rispondere a lui, e stare a tu per tu con lui?
¿Cuánto menos le responderé yo, y hablaré con él palabras estudiadas?
How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
How much less will I answer him, and choose my words to argue with him?
Io che sebbene avessi qualche ragione non risponderò, ma implorerò la clemenza del mio Giudice.
Que aunque fuese yo justo, no responderé; antes habré de rogar á mi juez.
Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.

Perocché egli mi ruoterà in un turbine, e moltiplicherà le mie piaghe anche senza cagione.

Ei non lascia riposo alcuno al mio spirito, e mi inebria di amarezze.

Se si ricorre alla possanza, egli è potentissimo, se all'equità nel giudicare, nissuno ardisce di rendere testimonianza in favor mio.
Si habláremos de su potencia, fuerte por cierto es; si de juicio, ¿quién me emplazará?
If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?
If it is a matter of strength, behold, he is mighty! If of justice, ‘Who,’ says he, ‘will summon me?’
Se io vorrò giustificarmi, mi condannerà la mia propria bocca, se io mi dimostrerò innocente egli mi convincerà di reato.
Si yo me justificare, me condenará mi boca; si me dijere perfecto, esto me hará inicuo.
If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.
Though I am righteous, my own mouth will condemn me. Though I am blameless, it will prove me perverse.
Quand'anche io fossi perfetto, questo stesso sarà ignoto all'anima mia, e mi sarà noiosa la vita.
Bien que yo fuese íntegro, no conozco mi alma: reprocharé mi vida.
Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.

Questa sola cosa ho detto io: Egli consuma e l'innocente, e l'iniquo.

Se egli flagella, uccida a un tratto, e non rida delle pene degli innocenti.
Si azote mata de presto, ríese de la prueba de los inocentes.
If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.
If the scourge kills suddenly, he will mock at the trial of the innocent.
La terra è data in balia dell'empio, il quale mette una benda agli occhi de' giudici di essa. E se egli noi fa, chi è adunque, che lo faccia?
La tierra es entregada en manos de los impíos, y él cubre el rostro de sus jueces. Si no es él, ¿quién es? ¿dónde está?
The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covereth the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he?

I giorni miei sono stati più veloci di uom corridore; sono fuggiti, e nulla hanno veduto di bene.

Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good.

Allorché io dico: Non parlerò più così; si altera la mia faccia, e mi strazia il dolore.

If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself:
If I say, ‘I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad face, and cheer up,’
Io temeva di tutte le mie azioni, sapendo, che non mi avresti perdonato se io peccava.
Contúrbanme todos mis trabajos; sé que no me darás por libre.
I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.

Ma se anche così facendo io son empio, perché mi son io travagliato inutilmente?
Yo soy impío, ¿para qué trabajaré en vano?
If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?

Quand'io fossi lavato con acqua di neve, e le mani mie luccicassero per mondezza,
Aunque me lave con aguas de nieve, y limpie mis manos con la misma limpieza,
If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;
If I wash myself with snow, and cleanse my hands with lye,
Nulladimeno mi immergerai nella lordura, e avranno di me orrore le stesse: mie vesti.
Aun me hundirás en el hoyo, y mis propios vestidos me abominarán.
Yet shalt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.

Perocché non avrò io a difendermi da un uomo simile a me, né da uno, che possa essere com'io convenuto in giudizio.

Giobbe si querela delle sue afflizioni, domandandone a Dio la cagione, la quale dimostra non essere stata la sua malvagità, né l'ignoranza di Dio, il quale perfettamente conosce l'uomo, ch'egli ha creato: e di nuovo per l'eccesso de' suoi mali si lamenta d'esser nato.
Entonces hablaré, y no le temeré: porque así no estoy en mí mismo.
