1Da hob Eliphas von Theman an und sagte:
2»Wird es dich verdrießen, wenn man ein Wort an dich zu richten wagt? Doch wer vermöchte die Worte zurückzuhalten?
3Hast du doch selbst vielen (Leidenden) Mut zugesprochen und erschlaffte Hände gestärkt;
4manchen Wankenden haben deine Worte aufrecht gehalten, und niedersinkenden Knien hast du neue Kraft verliehen.
5Nun aber, da die Reihe an dich gekommen, bist du verzagt; nun es dich selbst trifft, verlierst du den Halt!«
6»Ist deine Gottesfurcht nicht deine Zuversicht und dein unsträflicher Wandel deine Hoffnung?
7Bedenke doch: Wo ist je ein Unschuldiger zugrunde gegangen, und wo sind Rechtschaffene vernichtet worden?
8Soweit meine Erfahrung reicht: die Unheil gepflügt und Frevel gesät hatten, die haben es auch geerntet.
9Durch Gottes Odem kommen sie um, und durch den Hauch seines Zornes vergehen sie.
10Des Löwen Gebrüll und die Stimme des Leuen (sind verstummt), und den jungen Löwen sind die Zähne ausgebrochen;
11da kommt auch ein Löwe um aus Mangel an Raub, und die Jungen der Löwin müssen sich zerstreuen.«
12»Zu mir ist aber ein Wort verstohlen gedrungen, und mein Ohr hat einen flüsternden Laut davon vernommen
13beim Spiel der durch Traumbilder erregten Gedanken, in der Zeit, wo tiefer Schlaf sich auf die Menschen senkt:
14ein Grauen überfiel mich und ein Zittern, durch alle meine Gebeine ging ein Schauder;
15ein Lufthauch strich leise an meinem Antlitz vorüber; es sträubte sich mir das Haar am Leibe empor!
16Da stand – ihr Aussehen konnte ich nicht erkennen – eine Gestalt vor meinen Augen, und eine Stimme hörte ich flüstern:
17›Kann wohl ein Mensch gerecht vor Gott sein oder ein Sterblicher rein vor seinem Schöpfer?
18Bedenke: seinen Dienern kann er nicht trauen, und seinen Engeln legt er Mängel zur Last:
19wieviel mehr denen, die Lehmhütten bewohnen, deren Grundbau im Staube liegt! Sie werden zerdrückt, als wären sie Motten;
20vom Morgen bis zum Abend werden sie zerschmettert; unbeachtet vergehen sie auf ewig.
21Nicht wahr, so ist es: wird das Haltseil ihres Zeltes bei ihnen ausgerissen, so sterben sie und wissen nicht wie.‹«

1Y RESPONDIÓ Eliphaz el Temanita, y dijo:
2Si probáremos á hablarte, serte ha molesto; mas ¿quién podrá detener las palabras?
3He aquí, tú enseñabas á muchos, y las manos flacas corroborabas;
4Al que vacilaba, enderezaban tus palabras, y esforzabas las rodillas que decaían.
5Mas ahora que el mal sobre ti ha venido, te es duro; y cuando ha llegado hasta ti, te turbas.
6¿Es este tu temor, tu confianza, tu esperanza, y la perfección de tus caminos?
7Recapacita ahora, ¿quién que fuera inocente se perdiera? y ¿en dónde los rectos fueron cortados?
8Como yo he visto, los que aran iniquidad y siembran injuria, la siegan.
9Perecen por el aliento de Dios, y por el espíritu de su furor son consumidos.
10El bramido del león, y la voz del león, y los dientes de los leoncillos son quebrantados.
11El león viejo perece por falta de presa, y los hijos del león son esparcidos.
12El negocio también me era á mí oculto; mas mi oído ha percibido algo de ello.
13En imaginaciones de visiones nocturnas, cuando el sueño cae sobre los hombres,
14Sobrevínome un espanto y un temblor, que estremeció todos mis huesos:
15Y un espíritu pasó por delante de mí, que hizo se erizara el pelo de mi carne.
16Paróse un fantasma delante de mis ojos, cuyo rostro yo no conocí, y quedo, oí que decía:
17¿Si será el hombre más justo que Dios? ¿si será el varón más limpio que el que lo hizo?
18He aquí que en sus siervos no confía, y notó necedad en sus ángeles;
19¡Cuánto más en los que habitan en casas de lodo, cuyo fundamento está en el polvo, y que serán quebrantados de la polilla!
20De la mañana á la tarde son quebrantados, y se pierden para siempre, sin haber quien lo considere.
21¿Su hermosura, no se pierde con ellos mismos? Mueren, y sin sabiduría.
King James Version
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?
3Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
4Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.
5But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
6Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?
7Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?
8Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.
9By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.
10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
11The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion’s whelps are scattered abroad.
12Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.
13In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,
14Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.
15Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:
16It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,
17Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
18Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:
19How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?
20They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.
21Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.

1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,
2“If someone ventures to talk with you, will you be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking?
3Behold, you have instructed many, you have strengthened the weak hands.
4Your words have supported him who was falling, you have made the feeble knees firm.
5But now it has come to you, and you faint. It touches you, and you are troubled.
6Isn’t your piety your confidence? Isn’t the integrity of your ways your hope?
7“Remember, now, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?
8According to what I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble, reap the same.
9By the breath of God they perish. By the blast of his anger are they consumed.
10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
11The old lion perishes for lack of prey. The cubs of the lioness are scattered abroad.
12“Now a thing was secretly brought to me. My ear received a whisper of it.
13In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,
14fear came on me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake.
15Then a spirit passed before my face. The hair of my flesh stood up.
16It stood still, but I couldn’t discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes. Silence, then I heard a voice, saying,
17‘Shall mortal man be more just than God? Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?
18Behold, he puts no trust in his servants. He charges his angels with error.
19How much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth!
20Between morning and evening they are destroyed. They perish forever without any regarding it.
21Isn’t their tent cord plucked up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.’
