Leeser Old Testament
1Then answered Eliphaz the Themanite, and said,
2If we essay to address a word to thee, wilt thou be wearied? yet who is able to refrain from speaking?
3Behold, thou hast ere this corrected many, and weak hands thou wast wont to strengthen.
4Him that stumbled thy words used to uphold, and to sinking knees thou gavest vigor.
5Yet now, when it cometh to thee, thou art wearied: it toucheth even thee, and thou art terrified.
6Is not then thy fear of God still thy confidence, thy hope equal to the integrity of thy ways?
7Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous destroyed?
8Even as I have seen, that those who plough wrongdoing, and sow trouble, have to reap the same.
9Before the breathing of God they perish, and before the breath of his nostrils they come to their end.
10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
11The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness have to scatter themselves abroad.
12But to me a word came by stealth, and my ear took in a scarcely perceptible whisper thereof.
13In intense thoughts out of visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men:
14Dread came over me, with trembling, and it caused all my bones to shudder.
15Then flitted a spirit past before my face; the hair of my body stood up:
16It stood still, but I could not recognize its form; a figure was before my eyes, a slight whisper, then a louder voice I heard, saying,
17Can a mortal be more righteous than God? or can a man be more pure than his Maker?
18Behold, in his servants he putteth no trust, and his angels he chargeth with folly:
19How much less in those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed till they come to be eaten by the moth?
20From morning to evening are they broken to pieces: without laying it to heart they perish for ever.
21Behold, their excellency which is in them is torn away: they die, and this without wisdom.

1Y RESPONDIÓ Eliphaz el Temanita, y dijo:
2Si probáremos á hablarte, serte ha molesto; mas ¿quién podrá detener las palabras?
3He aquí, tú enseñabas á muchos, y las manos flacas corroborabas;
4Al que vacilaba, enderezaban tus palabras, y esforzabas las rodillas que decaían.
5Mas ahora que el mal sobre ti ha venido, te es duro; y cuando ha llegado hasta ti, te turbas.
6¿Es este tu temor, tu confianza, tu esperanza, y la perfección de tus caminos?
7Recapacita ahora, ¿quién que fuera inocente se perdiera? y ¿en dónde los rectos fueron cortados?
8Como yo he visto, los que aran iniquidad y siembran injuria, la siegan.
9Perecen por el aliento de Dios, y por el espíritu de su furor son consumidos.
10El bramido del león, y la voz del león, y los dientes de los leoncillos son quebrantados.
11El león viejo perece por falta de presa, y los hijos del león son esparcidos.
12El negocio también me era á mí oculto; mas mi oído ha percibido algo de ello.
13En imaginaciones de visiones nocturnas, cuando el sueño cae sobre los hombres,
14Sobrevínome un espanto y un temblor, que estremeció todos mis huesos:
15Y un espíritu pasó por delante de mí, que hizo se erizara el pelo de mi carne.
16Paróse un fantasma delante de mis ojos, cuyo rostro yo no conocí, y quedo, oí que decía:
17¿Si será el hombre más justo que Dios? ¿si será el varón más limpio que el que lo hizo?
18He aquí que en sus siervos no confía, y notó necedad en sus ángeles;
19¡Cuánto más en los que habitan en casas de lodo, cuyo fundamento está en el polvo, y que serán quebrantados de la polilla!
20De la mañana á la tarde son quebrantados, y se pierden para siempre, sin haber quien lo considere.
21¿Su hermosura, no se pierde con ellos mismos? Mueren, y sin sabiduría.

1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,
2If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking?
3Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
4Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.
5But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
6Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?
7Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?
8Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.
9By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.
10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
11The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion’s whelps are scattered abroad.
12Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.
13In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,
14Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.
15Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:
16It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying,
17Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?
18Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:
19How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?
20They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it.
21Doth not their excellency which is in them go away? they die, even without wisdom.

1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,
2“If someone ventures to talk with you, will you be grieved? But who can withhold himself from speaking?
3Behold, you have instructed many, you have strengthened the weak hands.
4Your words have supported him who was falling, you have made the feeble knees firm.
5But now it has come to you, and you faint. It touches you, and you are troubled.
6Isn’t your piety your confidence? Isn’t the integrity of your ways your hope?
7“Remember, now, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the upright cut off?
8According to what I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble, reap the same.
9By the breath of God they perish. By the blast of his anger are they consumed.
10The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
11The old lion perishes for lack of prey. The cubs of the lioness are scattered abroad.
12“Now a thing was secretly brought to me. My ear received a whisper of it.

18Behold, he puts no trust in his servants. He charges his angels with error.
19How much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth!
20Between morning and evening they are destroyed. They perish forever without any regarding it.
21Isn’t their tent cord plucked up within them? They die, and that without wisdom.’
