Cingi da uomo forte i tuoi fianchi: io ti interrogherò, e tu rispondimi.
Ahora ciñe como varón tus lomos; yo te preguntaré, y hazme saber tú.
Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!
Dov' eri tu quand'io gettava i fondamenti della terra? dimmelo se ne sai tanto.
¿Dónde estabas cuando yo fundaba la tierra? házmelo saber, si tienes inteligencia.
Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
Sai tu chi ne fissò le misure? e chi tese sopra di essa il livello?
¿Quién ordenó sus medidas, si lo sabes? ¿ó quién extendió sobre ella cordel?
Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
Qual hanno appoggio le basi di lei? e chi pose la sua pietra angolare,
¿Sobre qué están fundadas sus basas? ¿ó quién puso su piedra angular,
Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
What were its foundations fastened on? Or who laid its cornerstone,
Allorché davano laude a me tutte insieme le stelle della mattina, e voci di giubilo alzavano tutti i figliuoli di Dio?

Chi chiuse le porte al mare quand'ei scappò fuora, come uscendo dall'alvo materno?
¿Quién encerró con puertas la mar, cuando se derramaba por fuera como saliendo de madre;
Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,
Quand'io la nube gli diedi per vestimento, e nella caligine lo rinvolsi, come un bambino nelle sue fasce?
Cuando puse yo nubes por vestidura suya, y por su faja oscuridad.
When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
Lo ristrinsi dentro a' confini posti da me, e gli diedi sue porte, e contrafforti;
Y establecí sobre ella mi decreto, y le puse puertas y cerrojo,
And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
E dissi: Sin qua tu verrai, ma non passerai più innanzi, e qui frangerai gli orgogliosi tuoi flutti.
Y dije: Hasta aquí vendrás, y no pasarás adelante, y ahí parará la hinchazón de tus ondas?
And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?
Forse dopo che sei al mondo desti legge alla luce della mattina, e all'aurora mostrasti il luogo onde uscir fuori?
¿Has tú mandado á la mañana en tus días? ¿has mostrado al alba su lugar,
Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place,
Hai tu scossi colle tue mani i cardini della terra, e ne hai tu sbalzati gli empj?
Para que ocupe los fines de la tierra, y que sean sacudidos de ella los impíos?
That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?
Tornerà come fango il sigillo, e sussisterà come una veste:
Trasmúdase como lodo bajo de sello, y viene á estar como con vestidura:
It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment.
Sarà agli empj tolto il loro splendore, e la eccelsa loro possanza sarà annichilata.
Mas la luz de los impíos es quitada de ellos, y el brazo enaltecido es quebrantado.
And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.
Se' tu entrato nel fondo del mare, e hai tu passeggiato nel profondo dell'abisso?
¿Has entrado tú hasta los profundos de la mar, y has andado escudriñando el abismo?
Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
Son elleno state aperte a te le porte di morte, e que' tenebrosi liminari gli hai tu veduti?
¿Hante sido descubiertas las puertas de la muerte, y has visto las puertas de la sombra de muerte?
Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
Hai tu considerata l'ampiezza della terra? Dimmi, conosci tu tutte queste cose?
¿Has tú considerado hasta las anchuras de la tierra? Declara si sabes todo esto.
Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.
Dove sia che abiti la luce, e qual sia il ripostiglio delle tenebre:
¿Por dónde va el camino á la habitación de la luz, y dónde está el lugar de las tinieblas?
Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
Onde e l'una, e le altre tu condur possa a' luoghi loro, sapendo la via delle case loro.
¿Si llevarás tú ambas cosas á sus términos, y entenderás las sendas de su casa?
That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
Sapevi tu una volta di aver a nascere? Eri tu informato del numero de' tuoi giorni?
¿Sabíaslo tú porque hubieses ya nacido, ó porque es grande el número de tus días?
Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
Se' tu entrato dove le nevi si serbano, ed hai tu veduto dove si raccolgan le grandini
¿Has tú entrado en los tesoros de la nieve, ó has visto los tesoros del granizo,
Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
Preparate da me per farne uso contro il nemico, pel giorno di guerra, e di conflitto?
Lo cual tengo yo reservado para el tiempo de angustia, para el día de la guerra y de la batalla?
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?

Chi segnò il corso alla impetuosa pioggia, e la strada al tuono romoreggiante?
¿Quién repartió conducto al turbión, y camino á los relámpagos y truenos,
Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,
E fece piovere sulla terra deserta priva di abitatore, dove nissun de' mortali pone sua stanza,
Haciendo llover sobre la tierra deshabitada, sobre el desierto, donde no hay hombre,
To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
to cause it to rain on a land where there is no man, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,
Inondandola, benché inabitabile, e desolata, affinchè verdi erbette produca?
Para hartar la tierra desierta é inculta, y para hacer brotar la tierna hierba?
To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?

Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?

Da qual seno uscì il ghiaccio, e chi dall'aria mandò il gelo?
¿De qué vientre salió el hielo? y la escarcha del cielo, ¿quién la engendró?
Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
Whose womb did the ice come out of? Who has given birth to the gray frost of the sky?
Le acque si indurano come pietre, e la superficie del mar si rappiglia.
Las aguas se endurecen á manera de piedra, y congélase la haz del abismo.
The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.
Potrai tu forse legare le stelle folgoreggianti delle Pleiadi, o sconvolgere il corso di Orione?
¿Podrás tú impedir las delicias de las Pléyades, ó desatarás las ligaduras del Orión?
Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
Se' tu forse, che fai apparire a suo tempo la stella del mattino, o che fai nascere l'Espero sopra i figliuoli degli uomini?
¿Sacarás tú á su tiempo los signos de los cielos, ó guiarás el Arcturo con sus hijos?
Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
Intendi tu l'ordine del cielo, e stabilirai le ragioni di lui sopra la terra?
¿Supiste tú las ordenanzas de los cielos? ¿dispondrás tú de su potestad en la tierra?
Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?
Alzerai tu la tua voce alla nube per far venire sopra di te un diluvio di acque?
¿Alzarás tú á las nubes tu voz, para que te cubra muchedumbre de aguas?
Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?
Spedirai tu i folgori, e questi anderanno, e ti diranno al ritorno: Siamo a' tuoi cenni?
¿Enviarás tú los relámpagos, para que ellos vayan? ¿y diránte ellos: Henos aquí?
Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
Chi nel petto dell'uomo pose la saggezza, e chi al gallo diede discernimento?
¿Quién puso la sabiduría en el interior? ¿ó quién dió al entendimiento la inteligencia?
Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
Chi esporrà il governo de' cieli, e farà tacere la celeste armonia.
¿Quién puso por cuenta los cielos con sabiduría? y los odres de los cielos, ¿quién los hace parar,
Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
Who can count the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the containers of the sky,
Così fu fin da quando si rapprese la polvere sopra la terra, e le sue zolle si rassodarono.
Cuando el polvo se ha convertido en dureza, y los terrones se han pegado unos con otros?
When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?
Anderai tu a far preda per la lionessa, e satollerai le brame de' suoi lioncini,

Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
Allorché giaciono nelle tane, e stanno ansiosi per le caverne?
—
When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
Chi preparò il suo nudrimento al corvo, allorché i suoi pulcini gracchiano verso Dio, e van qua, e là, perché non han da mangiare? Dio fa vedere a Giobbe le sue maraviglie anche nelle capre salvatiche, nell’asino selvaggio, nel rinoceronte, nello struzzolo, nel cavallo, e nell'aquila, riprendendolo dell’aver voluto disputare con lui: per le quali cose commosso Giobbe confessa di avere temerariamente parlato.
