1Da antwortete der HERR dem Hiob aus dem Wettersturme heraus folgendermaßen:
2»Wer ist’s, der da den Heilsplan Gottes verdunkelt mit Worten ohne Einsicht?
3Auf! Gürte dir die Lenden wie ein Mann, so will ich dich fragen, und du belehre mich!«
4»Wo warst du, als ich die Erde baute? Sprich es aus, wenn du Einsicht besitzest!
5Wer hat ihre Maße bestimmt – du weißt es ja! –, oder wer hat die Meßschnur über sie ausgespannt?
6Worauf sind ihre Grundpfeiler eingesenkt worden, oder wer hat ihren Eckstein gelegt,
7während die Morgensterne allesamt laut frohlockten und alle Gottessöhne jauchzten?
8Und wer hat das Meer mit Toren verschlossen, als es hervorbrach, aus dem Mutterschoß heraustrat?
9Als ich Gewölk zu seinem Kleide machte und dunkle Nebel zu seinen Windeln?
10Als ich ihm das von mir bestimmte Gebiet absteckte und ihm Riegel und Tore herstellte
11und sprach: ›Bis hierher darfst du kommen, aber nicht weiter, und hier soll sich der Stolz deiner Wellen brechen!‹
12Hast du jemals, seitdem du lebst, das Morgenlicht bestellt? Hast du dem Frührot seine Stätte angewiesen,
13daß es die Säume der Erde erfasse und die Frevler von ihr verscheucht werden?
14Sie (die Erde) verwandelt sich alsdann wie Wachs unter dem Siegel, und alles stellt sich dar wie ein Prachtgewand;
15den Frevlern aber wird ihr Licht entzogen, und der zum Schlagen schon erhobene Arm zerbricht.
16Bist du bis zu den Quellen des Meeres gekommen, und hast du die tiefsten Tiefen des Weltmeers durchwandelt?
17Haben sich vor dir die Pforten des Todes aufgetan, und hast du die Pforten des Schattenreichs gesehen?
18Hast du die weiten Flächen der Erde überschaut? Sage an, wenn du dies alles weißt!
19Wo geht denn der Weg nach der Wohnung des Lichts, und die Finsternis, wo hat sie ihre Heimstätte,
20daß du sie in ihr Gebiet hinbringen könntest und daß die Pfade zu ihrem Hause dir bekannt wären?
21Du weißt es ja, denn damals wurdest du ja geboren, und die Zahl deiner Lebenstage ist groß!
22Bist du zu den Vorratskammern des Schnees gekommen, und hast du die Speicher des Hagels gesehen,
23den ich aufgespart habe für die Drangsalszeiten, für den Tag des Kampfes und des Krieges?
24Wo ist der Weg dahin, wo das Licht sich teilt und von wo der Ostwind sich über die Erde verbreitet?
25Wer hat der Regenflut Kanäle gespalten und einen Weg dem Donnerstrahl gebahnt,
26um regnen zu lassen auf menschenleeres Land, auf die Steppe, wo niemand wohnt,
27um die Einöde und Wildnis reichlich zu tränken und Pflanzengrün sprießen zu lassen?
28Hat der Regen einen Vater, oder wer erzeugt die Tropfen des Taues?
29Aus wessen Mutterschoße geht das Eis hervor, und wer läßt den Reif des Himmels entstehen?
30Wie zu Stein verhärten sich die Wasser, und der Spiegel der Fluten schließt sich zur festen Decke zusammen.
31Vermagst du die Bande des Siebengestirns zu knüpfen oder die Fesseln des Orion zu lösen?
32Läßt du die Bilder des Tierkreises zur rechten Zeit hervortreten, und leitest du den Großen Bären samt seinen Jungen?
33Kennst du die für den Himmel gültigen Gesetze, oder bestimmst du seine Herrschaft über die Erde?
34Kannst du deine Stimme hoch zu den Wolken dringen lassen, daß strömender Regen dich bedecke?
35Entsendest du die Blitze, daß sie hinfahren und zu dir sagen: ›Hier sind wir‹?
36Wer hat Weisheit in die Wolkenschichten gelegt oder wer dem Luftgebilde Verstand verliehen?
37Wer zählt die Federwolken mit Weisheit ab, und die Schläuche des Himmels, wer läßt sie sich ergießen,
38wenn das Erdreich sich zu Metallguß verhärtet hat und die Schollen sich fest zusammenballen?
39Erjagst du für die Löwin die Beute, und stillst du die Gier der jungen Leuen,
40wenn sie in ihren Höhlen kauern, im Dickicht auf der Lauer liegen?
41Wer verschafft dem Raben sein Futter, wenn seine Jungen zu Gott schreien und wegen Mangels an Nahrung umherirren?

1Y RESPONDIÓ Jehová á Job desde un torbellino, y dijo:
2¿Quién es ése que oscurece el consejo con palabras sin sabiduría?
3Ahora ciñe como varón tus lomos; yo te preguntaré, y hazme saber tú.
4¿Dónde estabas cuando yo fundaba la tierra? házmelo saber, si tienes inteligencia.
5¿Quién ordenó sus medidas, si lo sabes? ¿ó quién extendió sobre ella cordel?
6¿Sobre qué están fundadas sus basas? ¿ó quién puso su piedra angular,
7Cuando las estrellas todas del alba alababan, y se regocijaban todos los hijos de Dios?
8¿Quién encerró con puertas la mar, cuando se derramaba por fuera como saliendo de madre;
9Cuando puse yo nubes por vestidura suya, y por su faja oscuridad.
10Y establecí sobre ella mi decreto, y le puse puertas y cerrojo,
11Y dije: Hasta aquí vendrás, y no pasarás adelante, y ahí parará la hinchazón de tus ondas?
12¿Has tú mandado á la mañana en tus días? ¿has mostrado al alba su lugar,
13Para que ocupe los fines de la tierra, y que sean sacudidos de ella los impíos?
14Trasmúdase como lodo bajo de sello, y viene á estar como con vestidura:
15Mas la luz de los impíos es quitada de ellos, y el brazo enaltecido es quebrantado.
16¿Has entrado tú hasta los profundos de la mar, y has andado escudriñando el abismo?
17¿Hante sido descubiertas las puertas de la muerte, y has visto las puertas de la sombra de muerte?
18¿Has tú considerado hasta las anchuras de la tierra? Declara si sabes todo esto.
19¿Por dónde va el camino á la habitación de la luz, y dónde está el lugar de las tinieblas?
20¿Si llevarás tú ambas cosas á sus términos, y entenderás las sendas de su casa?
21¿Sabíaslo tú porque hubieses ya nacido, ó porque es grande el número de tus días?
22¿Has tú entrado en los tesoros de la nieve, ó has visto los tesoros del granizo,
23Lo cual tengo yo reservado para el tiempo de angustia, para el día de la guerra y de la batalla?
24¿Por qué camino se reparte la luz, y se esparce el viento solano sobre la tierra?
25¿Quién repartió conducto al turbión, y camino á los relámpagos y truenos,
26Haciendo llover sobre la tierra deshabitada, sobre el desierto, donde no hay hombre,
27Para hartar la tierra desierta é inculta, y para hacer brotar la tierna hierba?
28¿Tiene la lluvia padre? ¿ó quién engendró las gotas del rocío?
29¿De qué vientre salió el hielo? y la escarcha del cielo, ¿quién la engendró?
30Las aguas se endurecen á manera de piedra, y congélase la haz del abismo.
31¿Podrás tú impedir las delicias de las Pléyades, ó desatarás las ligaduras del Orión?
32¿Sacarás tú á su tiempo los signos de los cielos, ó guiarás el Arcturo con sus hijos?
33¿Supiste tú las ordenanzas de los cielos? ¿dispondrás tú de su potestad en la tierra?
34¿Alzarás tú á las nubes tu voz, para que te cubra muchedumbre de aguas?
35¿Enviarás tú los relámpagos, para que ellos vayan? ¿y diránte ellos: Henos aquí?
36¿Quién puso la sabiduría en el interior? ¿ó quién dió al entendimiento la inteligencia?
37¿Quién puso por cuenta los cielos con sabiduría? y los odres de los cielos, ¿quién los hace parar,

1Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
2Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge?
3Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and answer thou me.
4Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if thou hast understanding.
5Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?
6Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof;
7When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it brake forth, as if it had issued out of the womb?
9When I made the cloud the garment thereof, and thick darkness a swaddlingband for it,
10And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,
11And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
12Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place;
13That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it?
14It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.
15And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm shall be broken.
16Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?
17Have the gates of death been opened unto thee? or hast thou seen the doors of the shadow of death?
18Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.
19Where is the way where light dwelleth? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof,
20That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof?
21Knowest thou it, because thou wast then born? or because the number of thy days is great?
22Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow? or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail,
23Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
24By what way is the light parted, which scattereth the east wind upon the earth?
25Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
26To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
27To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
28Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
29Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
30The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
31Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
32Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
33Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
34Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
35Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
36Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?
37Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven,
38When the dust groweth into hardness, and the clods cleave fast together?
39Wilt thou hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions,
40When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait?
41Who provideth for the raven his food? when his young ones cry unto God, they wander for lack of meat.

2“Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?
3Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me!
4“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
5Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it?
6What were its foundations fastened on? Or who laid its cornerstone,
7when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb,
9when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness,
10marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors,
11and said, ‘You may come here, but no further. Your proud waves shall be stopped here’?
12“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place,
13that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it?
14It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment.
15From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken.
16“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?
17Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
18Have you comprehended the earth in its width? Declare, if you know it all.
19“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place,
20that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house?
21Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!
22Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail,
23which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
24By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth?
25Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm,
26to cause it to rain on a land where there is no man, on the wilderness, in which there is no man,
27to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to grow?
28Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?
29Whose womb did the ice come out of? Who has given birth to the gray frost of the sky?
30The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen.
31“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion?
32Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs?
33Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth?
34“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you?
35Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
36Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind?
37Who can count the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the containers of the sky,
38when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together?
39“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions,
40when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket?
41Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
