da seine Leuchte strahlte über meinem Haupte, / in seinem Licht ich wandelte durchs Dunkel! /

Cuando lavaba yo mis caminos con manteca, y la piedra me derramaba ríos de aceite!

Cuando salía á la puerta á juicio, y en la plaza hacía preparar mi asiento,

Vestíame de justicia, y ella me vestía como un manto; y mi toca era juicio.

So dachte ich: "Mit meinem Neste werde ich sterben / und lange leben wie der Phönix. / (1) sagenhafter Vogel, der sich alle fünfhundert o. tausend Jahre mit seinem Neste verbrennt und dann aus der Asche wieder ersteht.
Y decía yo: En mi nido moriré, y como arena multiplicaré días.
Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.

Meine Wurzel streckt sich hin zum Wasser, / auf meinem Gezweige nächtigt der Tau. /
Mi raíz estaba abierta junto á las aguas, y en mis ramas permanecía el rocío.
My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.

Mi honra se renovaba en mí, y mi arco se corroboraba en mi mano.

Mir hörten sie zu und harrten / und lauschten still auf meinen Rat. /
Oíanme, y esperaban; y callaban á mi consejo.
Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.

Wenn ich geredet, sprachen sie nicht mehr, / und meine Rede träufelte auf sie. /
Tras mi palabra no replicaban, y mi razón destilaba sobre ellos.
After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.

Und sie harrten auf mich wie auf den Regen, / wie nach Frühlingsregen sperrten sie den Mund auf. /

Si me reía con ellos, no lo creían: y no abatían la luz de mi rostro.

Ich bestimmte ihr Tun und sass da als Haupt / und thronte wie ein König in der Kriegerschar, / wie einer, der die Traurigen tröstet. /
Calificaba yo el camino de ellos, y sentábame en cabecera; y moraba como rey en el ejército, como el que consuela llorosos.
