Soggiunse indi Giobbe, ripigliando la sua parabola, e disse:

¡Quién me tornase como en los meses pasados, como en los días que Dios me guardaba,

Allorché il suo lume risplendeva sulla mia testa, e tralle tenebre io camminava guidato dalla sua luce.
Cuando hacía resplandecer su candela sobre mi cabeza, á la luz de la cual yo caminaba en la oscuridad;
When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;

Qual era ne' giorni di mia giovinezza allorché Dio segretamente si stava nella mia tenda.
Como fué en los días de mi mocedad, cuando el secreto de Dios estaba en mi tienda;
As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle;
as I was in my prime, when the friendship of God was in my tent,
Quando meco si stava l'Onnipotente, e attorno a me tutti i miei figli
Cuando aun el Omnipotente estaba conmigo, y mis hijos alrededor de mí;
When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me;
when the Almighty was yet with me, and my children were around me,
Quand'io col burro ungeva i miei piedi, e da' massi sgorgavano rividi olio per me.
Cuando lavaba yo mis caminos con manteca, y la piedra me derramaba ríos de aceite!
When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil;
when my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured out streams of oil for me,
Quand'io me n'andava alla porta della città, e nella piazza mi preparavano la residenza.
Cuando salía á la puerta á juicio, y en la plaza hacía preparar mi asiento,

In reggendomi i giovani si ritiravano, e i vecchi si alzavano, e stavano in piedi.

I principi più non fiatavano, e mettevano il dito sulle lor labbra.

I grandi rattenevan la loro voce, e la loro lingua era attaccata al palato.
La voz de los principales se ocultaba, y su lengua se pegaba á su paladar:

Beato, diceami, chi ascoltava le mie parole, e chi mi vedea, dicea bene di me;

Perch'io liberava il povero che strideva, e il pupillo privo di difensore.
Porque libraba al pobre que gritaba, y al huérfano que carecía de ayudador.

Benedizioni mandava a me colui, che stava in pericolo di perire, e al cuor della vedova io porgeva conforto.

Mi rivestii di giustizia, e della mia equità mi adornai come di manto, e di diadema.

Io spezzava le mascelle a' malvagj, e strappava lor di tra i denti la preda.

E diceva: Io morrò nel mio nido, e come la palma moltiplicherò i miei giorni.

La mia radice diffondesi lungo le acque, e la rugiada si poserà su' miei rami.
Mi raíz estaba abierta junto á las aguas, y en mis ramas permanecía el rocío.
My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.
My root is spread out to the waters. The dew lies all night on my branch.
Sempre nuova sarà la mia gloria, e il mio arco sarà sempre più forte nella mia mano.
Mi honra se renovaba en mí, y mi arco se corroboraba en mi mano.
My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.

Quelli che mi ascoltavano aspettavano il mio parere, e in silenzio stavano attenti al mio consiglio.
Oíanme, y esperaban; y callaban á mi consejo.
Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.
“Men listened to me, waited, and kept silence for my counsel.
Non ardivano di aggiunger cosa alle mie parole, e i miei discorsi cadevano a stille sopra di loro.
Tras mi palabra no replicaban, y mi razón destilaba sobre ellos.
After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
After my words they didn’t speak again. My speech fell on them.
Ma essi aspettavano come la pioggia, e aprivano la loro bocca, come alla piova della tarda stagione.
Y esperábanme como á la lluvia, y abrían su boca como á la lluvia tardía.
And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

Se qualche volta io scherzava con essi, non sei credevano, e la ilarità del mio volto non era senza il suo frutto.
Si me reía con ellos, no lo creían: y no abatían la luz de mi rostro.
If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.
I smiled on them when they had no confidence. They didn’t reject the light of my face.
Se io voleva andare tra loro, stava assiso nel primo posto, e sedendo qual re circondato di armati, era con tutto ciò il consolator degli afflitti. Giobbe deplora la passata felicità cangiata, permettendolo Dio, in somma calamità.
Calificaba yo el camino de ellos, y sentábame en cabecera; y moraba como rey en el ejército, como el que consuela llorosos.
