Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.
“Listen diligently to my speech. Let this be your consolation.
Soffrite che parli anch'io, e di poi burlatevi, se così vi parrà, delle mie parole.
Soportadme, y yo hablaré; y después que hubiere hablado, escarneced.
Suffer me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.
Allow me, and I also will speak. After I have spoken, mock on.
Forse io disputo con un uomo, onde io non abbia ragion di attristarmi?
¿Hablo yo á algún hombre? y ¿por qué no se ha de angustiar mi espíritu?
As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?
As for me, is my complaint to man? Why shouldn’t I be impatient?
Miratemi attentamente, e rimarrete stupefatti, e vi metterete il dita alla bocca:
Miradme, y espantaos, y poned la mano sobre la boca.
Mark me, and be astonished, and lay your hand upon your mouth.
Look at me, and be astonished. Lay your hand on your mouth.
Io stesso quando vi ripenso mi atterrisco, e la mia carne è scossa dal tremito.
Aun yo mismo, cuando me acuerdo, me asombro, y toma temblor mi carne.
Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling taketh hold on my flesh.
When I remember, I am troubled. Horror takes hold of my flesh.
Perché adunque vivono gli empj, e sono innalzati, e son possenti per le loro ricchezze?
¿Por qué viven los impíos, y se envejecen, y aun crecen en riquezas?
Wherefore do the wicked live, become old, yea, are mighty in power?
“Why do the wicked live, become old, yes, and grow mighty in power?
Veggonsi stare attorno la loro progenie, hanno dinanzi una turba di parenti, e di nipoti.
Su simiente con ellos, compuesta delante de ellos; y sus renuevos delante de sus ojos.
Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes.
Their child is established with them in their sight, their offspring before their eyes.
Le loro case sono tranquille, e in pace, e non si fa ad essi sentire la verga di Dio.
Sus casas seguras de temor, ni hay azote de Dios sobre ellos.
Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.

Escon fuori in truppa come pecore i loro teneri figli, e saltano, e scherzano.

Portano timpani, e cetre, e danzano al suono degli strumenti.
Al son de tamboril y de cítara saltan, y se huelgan al son del órgano.
They take the timbrel and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ.

Passano felici i loro giorni, e in un istante scendono nel sepolcro.
Gastan sus días en bien, y en un momento descienden á la sepultura.
They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.

Eglino che dissero a Dio: Va lungi da noi, non vogliam saper nulla de' tuoi documenti.
Dicen pues á Dios: Apártate de nosotros, que no queremos el conocimiento de tus caminos.
Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.
They tell God, ‘Depart from us, for we don’t want to know about your ways.
Chi è quest'Onnipotente, che noi dobbiamo servirlo, e che gioverebbe a noi il pregarlo?
¿Quién es el Todopoderoso, para que le sirvamos? ¿y de qué nos aprovechará que oremos á él?
What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

Ma poiché in loro potestà non sono i beni loro, sia perciò lungi da me il sistema degli empj.
He aquí que su bien no está en manos de ellos: el consejo de los impíos lejos esté de mí.
Lo, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.
Behold, their prosperity is not in their hand. The counsel of the wicked is far from me.
Quante volte poi si spegne la lucerna degli empj, e vien sopra di essi la piena, e (Dio) nell'ira sua da ad essi la loro porzione di dolori?
¡Oh cuántas veces la lámpara de los impíos es apagada, y viene sobre ellos su quebranto, y Dios en su ira les reparte dolores!
How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft cometh their destruction upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
“How often is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out, that their calamity comes on them, that God distributes sorrows in his anger?
Saran come paglia al soffiar del vento, e come loppa dispersa da turbine.
Serán como la paja delante del viento, y como el tamo que arrebata el torbellino.
They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away.
How often is it that they are as stubble before the wind, as chaff that the storm carries away?
Serberà Dio a' figliuoli la pena del padre: e quando Dio renderà mercede, allora quegli imparerà.
Dios guardará para sus hijos su violencia; y le dará su pago, para que conozca.
God layeth up his iniquity for his children: he rewardeth him, and he shall know it.
You say, ‘God lays up his iniquity for his children.’ Let him recompense it to himself, that he may know it.
Vedrà egli co' proprj occhi il suo sterminio, e berà il furore dell'Onnipotente.
Verán sus ojos su quebranto, y beberá de la ira del Todopoderoso.
His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
Let his own eyes see his destruction. Let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.
Perocché che importa a lui quel che sarà della sua casa, quando il numero de' suoi mesi sia troncato nel mezzo?
Porque ¿qué deleite tendrá él de su casa después de sí, siendo cortado el número de sus meses?
For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?
For what does he care for his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off?
Vi sarà forse chi insegni a Dio, a lui che giudica i grandi?
¿Enseñará alguien á Dios sabiduría, juzgando él á los que están elevados?
Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.

Quegli muore robusto, e sano, e ricco, e felice;
Este morirá en el vigor de su hermosura, todo quieto y pacífico.
One dieth in his full strength, being wholly at ease and quiet.

Le sue viscere sono coperte di grasso, e le sue ossa di midollo:
Sus colodras están llenas de leche, y sus huesos serán regados de tuétano.
His breasts are full of milk, and his bones are moistened with marrow.
His pails are full of milk. The marrow of his bones is moistened.
Un altro poi muore tralle afflizioni di spirito, e privo di ogni bene.
Y estotro morirá en amargura de ánimo, y no habiendo comido jamás con gusto.
And another dieth in the bitterness of his soul, and never eateth with pleasure.
Another dies in bitterness of soul, and never tastes of good.
E con tutto ciò si giaceranno insieme nella polvere, e saran ricoperti dai vermi.
Igualmente yacerán ellos en el polvo, y gusanos los cubrirán.
They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.

Certo io comprendo i vostri pensieri, e gli ingiusti giudizj vostri contro di me.
He aquí, yo conozco vuestros pensamientos, y las imaginaciones que contra mí forjáis.
Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye wrongfully imagine against me.
“Behold, I know your thoughts, the plans with which you would wrong me.
Perocché voi dite: La casa di quel principe dov'è? E dove sono i padiglioni degli empj?
Porque decís: ¿Qué es de la casa del príncipe, y qué de la tienda de las moradas de los impíos?
For ye say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?
For you say, ‘Where is the house of the prince? Where is the tent in which the wicked lived?’
Interrogate chicchessia de' viaggiatori, e sentirete, che in questa guisa egli pensa.
¿No habéis preguntado á los que pasan por los caminos, por cuyas señas no negaréis,
Have ye not asked them that go by the way? and do ye not know their tokens,
Haven’t you asked wayfaring men? Don’t you know their evidences,
Perocché pel giorno della vendetta è riserbato l'iniquo, e sarà condotto al dì del furore.
Que el malo es reservado para el día de la destrucción? Presentados serán en el día de las iras.
That the wicked is reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.
that the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity, that they are led out to the day of wrath?
Chi biasimerà in faccia a lui i suoi andamenti? E chi a lui renderà quel ch'egli ha fatto?
¿Quién le denunciará en su cara su camino? Y de lo que él hizo, ¿quién le dará el pago?
Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he hath done?

Egli sarà condotto al sepolcro, e starà immobile tralla turba de' morti.
Porque llevado será él á los sepulcros, y en el montón permanecerá.
Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb.

La ghiaia del Cocito godé di averlo, ed ei tirerà dietro a se tutta la gente, e innanzi a se avrà una turba infinita.
Los terrones del valle le serán dulces; y tras de él será llevado todo hombre, y antes de él han ido innumerables.
The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.

Quanto vana è adunque la consolazione che voi mi recate, mentre è dimostrato, che quel che voi dite repugna al vero? Eliphaz accusa Giobbe di crudeltà nell'opprimere i poveri, e di altre scelleraggini, mostrando ch'ei non pensa rettamente della providenza divina, e promettendogli il bene ove si ripenta.
¿Cómo pues me consoláis en vano, viniendo á parar vuestras respuestas en falacia?
How then comfort ye me in vain, seeing in your answers there remaineth falsehood?
So how can you comfort me with nonsense, because in your answers there remains only falsehood?”
