1Da hörten Mattans Sohn Sephatja, Gedalja, Paschurs Sohn, und Jukar, des Selemja Sohn, und Paschur, des Malkia Sohn, die Worte, die Jeremias sprach zum ganzen Volke:
2"So spricht der Herr: 'Wer hier in dieser Stadt verbleibt, der stirbt durchs Schwert, den Hunger und die Pest; wer den Chaldäern sich ergibt, erbeutet seine Seele und bleibt am Leben.'
3So spricht der Herr: 'Gewiß wird diese Stadt dem Heer des Babelkönigs überliefert, der sie erobert.'"
4Da sprachen die Fürsten zum König: "Der Mann müßte getötet werden, weil er die Krieger, die in der Stadt noch übrig sind, wie auch das ganze Volk entmutigt, weil er vor ihnen solche Reden führt; denn dieser Mann ist nicht aufs Heil für unser Volk bedacht, nein, nur auf Unheil."
5Da sprach der König Sedekias: "Wohlan, er sei in eurer Hand! Denn gegen euch vermag der König nichts."
6Da nahmen sie den Jeremias und warfen ihn in die Zisterne des Prinzen Malkias im Wachthof. Sie ließen ihn hinab an Stricken. In der Zisterne war kein Wasser, sondern Schlamm, und Jeremias sank in diesen Schlamm.
7Da hörte der Äthiope Ebedmelech, ein Eunuche, der eben in des Königs Hause war, man habe den Jeremias in den Brunnen geschafft; der König aber weilte unterdes im Tore Benjamins.
8Darauf ging Ebedmelech aus dem Haus des Königs und sprach zum König:
9"Mein Herr und König! Gar übel taten jene Männer an dem Propheten Jeremias, da sie ihn in den Brunnen warfen, daß er dort Hungers stürbe, weil's in der Stadt kein Brot mehr gibt."
10Da wies der König den Äthiopen Ebedmelech an: "Nimm dir von hier drei Männer mit und holet den Propheten Jeremias aus dem Brunnen, bevor er stirbt."
11Da nahm Ebedmelech die Männer mit, ging in das Haus des Königs oben in die Kleiderkammer, nahm dorten Lumpen von zerrissenem und zerschlissenem Zeug und ließ an Stricken sie zu Jeremias in den Brunnen.
12Dann sprach der Äthiope Ebedmelech zu Jeremias: "Leg diese Lumpen von zerrissenem und zerschlissenem Zeug dir unter deine Achseln und um diese Stricke!" Und Jeremias tat so.
13Sie zogen nunmehr Jeremias an den Stricken hoch und holten ihn so aus dem Brunnen. Und Jeremias blieb fortan im Wachthof.
14Der König Sedekias ließ jedoch sich den Propheten Jeremias holen zum dritten Eingange im Haus des Herrn. Der König sprach zu Jeremias: "Ich will dich etwas fragen. Verhehl mir nichts!"
15Da sprach zu Sedekias Jeremias: "Verkünde ich es dir, läßt du mich töten. Geb ich dir aber einen Rat, so hörst du nicht auf mich."
16Da schwur der König Sedekias Jeremias insgeheim: "So wahr der Herr lebt, der es macht, daß uns jetzt so zu Mute ist: Ich lasse dich nicht töten und gebe dich nicht preis den Leuten, die dir nach dem Leben trachten."
17Und Jeremias sprach zu Sedekias: "So spricht der Herr, der Heeresscharen Gott, Gott Israels: 'Ergibst du dich den Obersten des Babelkönigs, dann bleibt dein Leben ungefährdet, und diese Stadt wird nicht verbrannt. Du bleibst samt deinem Haus am Leben.
18Ergibst du aber dich den Obersten des Babelkönigs nicht, dann fällt die Stadt in der Chaldäer Hand; sie werden sie verbrennen. Auch du entrinnst nicht ihren Händen.'"
19Der König Sedekias sprach zu Jeremias: "Ich sorge mich der Juden wegen, die schon zu den Chaldäern überliefen, daß sie mich diesen überlassen, um ihren Spott mit mir zu treiben."
20Darauf sprach Jeremias: "Sie liefern dich nicht aus. Folg doch dem Wort des Herren nach dem, was ich dir künde! Dann geht's dir gut, und du bleibst so am Leben.
21Doch sträubst du dich, dich zu ergeben, so ist es dies, was mir der Herr gezeigt:
22'Fürwahr, die Weiber all, die in des Judakönigs Haus noch übrig sind, sie werden vorgeführt den Obersten des Babelkönigs und sprechen: Betrogen haben dich und überredet deine guten Freunde. Sie lockten deine Füße in den Sumpf und ließen dich im Stich.
23Denn alle deine Weiber, deine Söhne wird man hinaus zu den Chaldäern führen; auch du entrinnst nicht ihren Händen; du wirst vielmehr dem Babelkönig überliefert, und diese Stadt wird man verbrennen.'"
24Da sprach zu Jeremias Sedekias: "Kein Mensch darf von der Unterredung wissen; sonst mußt du sterben.
25Doch sollten je die Fürsten es erfahren, daß ich mit dir geredet, und kämen sie zu dir und sagten: 'Teil uns doch mit, was du zum Könige gesprochen! - Verhehle uns aber nichts davon, sonst bringen wir dich um! - und was der König dann zu dir gesagt',
26so sage ihnen: 'Ich bat den König flehentlich, mich nicht mehr in das Haus des Jonatan zurückzuschicken, daß ich dort stürbe.'"
27Und wirklich kamen alle Fürsten zu Jeremias und fragten ihn. Doch gab er ihnen so Bescheid, wie ihm der König anbefohlen. Da ließen sie ihn gehen, weil von dem Vorgang weiter nichts bekannt geworden war.
28Und Jeremias blieb im Wachthof bis zum Tage, da Jerusalem erobert ward. Er blieb am Leben bei Jerusalems Eroberung.

1Y OYÓ Sephatías hijo de Mathán, y Gedalías hijo de Pashur, y Jucal hijo de Selemías, y Pashur hijo de Melchîas, las palabras que Jeremías hablaba á todo el pueblo, diciendo:
2Así ha dicho Jehová: El que se quedare en esta ciudad morirá á cuchillo, ó de hambre, ó de pestilencia; mas el que saliere á los Caldeos vivirá, pues su vida le será por despojo, y vivirá.
3Así ha dicho Jehová: De cierto será entregada esta ciudad en mano del ejército del rey de Babilonia, y tomarála.
4Y dijeron los príncipes al rey: Muera ahora este hombre; porque de esta manera hace desmayar las manos de los hombres de guerra que han quedado en esta ciudad, y las manos de todo el pueblo, hablándoles tales palabras; porque este hombre no busca la paz de este pueblo, sino el mal.
5Y dijo el rey Sedechîas: Helo ahí, en vuestras manos está; que el rey no podrá contra vosotros nada.
6Entonces tomaron ellos á Jeremías, é hiciéronlo echar en la mazmorra de Malchîas hijo de Amelech, que estaba en el patio de la cárcel; y metieron á Jeremías con sogas. Y en la mazmorra no había agua, sino cieno; y hundióse Jeremías en el cieno.
7Y oyendo Ebed-melec, hombre etiope, eunuco que estaba en casa del rey, que habían puesto á Jeremías en la mazmorra, y estando sentado el rey á la puerta de Benjamín,
8Ebed-melec salió de la casa del rey, y habló al rey, diciendo:
9Mi señor el rey, mal hicieron estos varones en todo lo que han hecho con Jeremías profeta, al cual hicieron echar en la mazmorra; porque allí se morirá de hambre, pues no hay más pan en la ciudad.
10Entonces mandó el rey al mismo Ebed-melec Etiope, diciendo: Toma en tu poder treinta hombres de aquí, y haz sacar á Jeremías profeta de la mazmorra, antes que muera.
11Y tomó Ebed-melec en su poder hombres, y entró á la casa del rey al lugar debajo de la tesorería, y tomó de allí trapos viejos, traídos, viejos, y andrajosos, y echólos á Jeremías con sogas en la mazmorra.
12Y dijo Ebed-melec Etiope á Jeremías: Pon ahora esos trapos viejos, traídos, y rotos, bajo los sobacos de tus brazos, debajo de las sogas. Y lo hizo así Jeremías.
13De este modo sacaron á Jeremías con sogas, y subiéronlo de la mazmorra; y quedó Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel.
14Después envió el rey Sedechîas, é hizo traer á sí á Jeremías profeta á la tercera entrada que estaba en la casa de Jehová. Y dijo el rey á Jeremías: Pregúntote una palabra, no me encubras ninguna cosa.
15Y Jeremías dijo á Sedechîas: Si te lo denunciare, ¿no es verdad que me matarás? y si te diere consejo, no has de escucharme.
16Y juró el rey Sedechîas en secreto á Jeremías, diciendo: Vive Jehová que nos hizo esta alma, que no te mataré, ni te entregaré en mano de estos varones que buscan tu alma.
17Entonces dijo Jeremías á Sedechîas: Así ha dicho Jehová Dios de los ejércitos, Dios de Israel: Si salieres luego á los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, tu alma vivirá, y esta ciudad no será puesta á fuego; y vivirás tú y tu casa:
18Mas si no salieres á los príncipes del rey de Babilonia, esta ciudad será entregada en mano de los Caldeos, y la pondrán á fuego, y tú no escaparás de sus manos.
19Y dijo el rey Sedechîas á Jeremías: Témome á causa de los Judíos que se han adherido á los Caldeos, que no me entreguen en sus manos y me escarnezcan.
20Y dijo Jeremías: No te entregarán. Oye ahora la voz de Jehová que yo te hablo, y tendrás bien, y vivirá tu alma.
21Mas si no quisieres salir, esta es la palabra que me ha mostrado Jehová:
22Y he aquí que todas las mujeres que han quedado en casa del rey de Judá, serán sacadas á los príncipes del rey de Babilonia; y ellas mismas dirán: Te han engañado, y prevalecido contra ti tus amigos; atollaron en el cieno tus pies, se volvieron atrás.
23Sacarán pues, todas tus mujeres y tus hijos á los Caldeos, y tú no escaparás de sus manos, sino que por mano del rey de Babilonia serás preso, y á esta ciudad quemará á fuego.
24Y dijo Sedechîas á Jeremías: Nadie sepa estas palabras, y no morirás.
25Y si los príncipes oyeren que yo he hablado contigo, y vinieren á ti y te dijeren: Decláranos ahora qué hablaste con el rey, no nos lo encubras, y no te mataremos; asimismo qué te dijo el rey;
26Les dirás: Supliqué al rey que no me hiciese tornar á casa de Jonathán porque no me muriese allí.
27Y vinieron luego todos los príncipes á Jeremías, y preguntáronle: y él les respondió conforme á todo lo que el rey le había mandado. Con esto se dejaron de él, porque el negocio no se había oído.
28Y quedó Jeremías en el patio de la cárcel hasta el día que fué tomada Jerusalem; y allí estaba cuando Jerusalem fué tomada.

1Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,
2Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.
3Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon’s army, which shall take it.
4Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.
5Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.
6Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.
7Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;
8Ebed-melech went forth out of the king’s house, and spake to the king, saying,
9My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is like to die for hunger in the place where he is: for there is no more bread in the city.
10Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.
11So Ebed-melech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took thence old cast clouts and old rotten rags, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.
12And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said unto Jeremiah, Put now these old cast clouts and rotten rags under thine armholes under the cords. And Jeremiah did so.
13So they drew up Jeremiah with cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
14Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet unto him into the third entry that is in the house of the LORD: and the king said unto Jeremiah, I will ask thee a thing; hide nothing from me.
15Then Jeremiah said unto Zedekiah, If I declare it unto thee, wilt thou not surely put me to death? and if I give thee counsel, wilt thou not hearken unto me?
16So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.
17Then said Jeremiah unto Zedekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; If thou wilt assuredly go forth unto the king of Babylon’s princes, then thy soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and thou shalt live, and thine house:
18But if thou wilt not go forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and thou shalt not escape out of their hand.
19And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.
20But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver thee. Obey, I beseech thee, the voice of the LORD, which I speak unto thee: so it shall be well unto thee, and thy soul shall live.
21But if thou refuse to go forth, this is the word that the LORD hath shewed me:
22And, behold, all the women that are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Thy friends have set thee on, and have prevailed against thee: thy feet are sunk in the mire, and they are turned away back.
23So they shall bring out all thy wives and thy children to the Chaldeans: and thou shalt not escape out of their hand, but shalt be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and thou shalt cause this city to be burned with fire.
24Then said Zedekiah unto Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and thou shalt not die.
25But if the princes hear that I have talked with thee, and they come unto thee, and say unto thee, Declare unto us now what thou hast said unto the king, hide it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; also what the king said unto thee:
26Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there.
27Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.
28So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.

1Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah heard the words that Jeremiah spoke to all the people, saying,
2“The LORD says, ‘He who remains in this city will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans will live. He will escape with his life and he will live.’
3The LORD says, ‘This city will surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he will take it.’”
4Then the princes said to the king, “Please let this man be put to death, because he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them; for this man doesn’t seek the welfare of this people, but harm.”
5Zedekiah the king said, “Behold, he is in your hand; for the king can’t do anything to oppose you.”
6Then they took Jeremiah and threw him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king’s son, that was in the court of the guard. They let down Jeremiah with cords. In the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.
7Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king was then sitting in Benjamin’s gate),
8Ebedmelech went out of the king’s house, and spoke to the king, saying,
9“My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon. He is likely to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city.”
10Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, “Take from here thirty men with you, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he dies.”
11So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took from there rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.
12Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Now put these rags and worn-out garments under your armpits under the cords.” Jeremiah did so.
13So they lifted Jeremiah up with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon; and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.
14Then Zedekiah the king sent and took Jeremiah the prophet to himself into the third entry that is in the LORD’s house. Then the king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask you something. Hide nothing from me.”
15Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? If I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.”
16So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, “As the LORD lives, who made our souls, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”
17Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “The LORD, the God of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you will go out to the king of Babylon’s princes, then your soul will live, and this city will not be burned with fire. You will live, along with your house.
18But if you will not go out to the king of Babylon’s princes, then this city will be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they will burn it with fire, and you won’t escape out of their hand.’”
19Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have defected to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.”
20But Jeremiah said, “They won’t deliver you. Obey, I beg you, the LORD’s voice, in that which I speak to you; so it will be well with you, and your soul will live.
21But if you refuse to go out, this is the word that the LORD has shown me:
22‘Behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah’s house will be brought out to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women will say, “Your familiar friends have turned on you, and have prevailed over you. Your feet are sunk in the mire, they have turned away from you.”
23They will bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans. You won’t escape out of their hand, but will be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon. You will cause this city to be burned with fire.’”
24Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no man know of these words, and you won’t die.
25But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you, and tell you, ‘Declare to us now what you have said to the king; don’t hide it from us, and we will not put you to death; also tell us what the king said to you;’
26then you shall tell them, ‘I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there.’”
27Then all the princes came to Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they stopped speaking with him, for the matter was not perceived.
28So Jeremiah stayed in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.
