1Zu jener Zeit, als es noch keinen König in Israel gab, begab es sich, daß ein Levit, der ganz hinten im Gebirge Ephraim als Fremdling wohnte, sich ein Mädchen aus Bethlehem in Juda zum Nebenweibe nahm.
2Aber sein Nebenweib überwarf sich mit ihm, verließ ihn und kehrte in ihres Vaters Haus nach Bethlehem in Juda zurück; dort blieb sie vier Monate lang.
3Da machte ihr Mann sich auf den Weg und zog ihr nach, um sie durch freundliches Zureden zur Rückkehr zu bewegen; seinen Diener und ein paar Esel hatte er bei sich. Sie führte ihn dann in das Haus ihres Vaters, und als dieser ihn sah, kam er ihm freundlich entgegen.
4Sein Schwiegervater, der Vater des jungen Weibes, hielt ihn dann zurück, so daß er drei Tage bei ihm blieb; sie aßen und tranken miteinander und übernachteten dort.
5Am vierten Tage aber, als sie in der Frühe aufgestanden waren und er aufbrechen wollte, sagte der Vater des jungen Weibes zu seinem Schwiegersohn: »Stärke dich noch mit einem Imbiß, dann mögt ihr euch auf den Weg machen!«
6So setzten sie sich denn hin, und die beiden aßen und tranken zusammen; dann bat der Vater des jungen Weibes den Mann: »Entschließe dich doch, über Nacht noch hier zu bleiben, und sei guter Dinge!«
7Und als der Mann aufstand, um sich auf den Weg zu machen, nötigte ihn sein Schwiegervater, so daß er wiederum über Nacht dablieb.
8Als er dann am fünften Tage frühmorgens aufbrechen wollte, sagte der Vater des jungen Weibes wiederum: »Stärke dich doch erst und wartet noch bis zum Nachmittag!«, und so aßen sie beide nochmals zusammen.
9Als dann der Mann aufstand, um mit seinem Nebenweibe und seinem Diener aufzubrechen, sagte sein Schwiegervater, der Vater des jungen Weibes, zu ihm: »Sieh doch, der Tag geht zu Ende, es will Abend werden: übernachtet doch hier! Sieh doch, wie der Tag schon zur Neige geht; bleibe über Nacht hier und laß dir’s bei mir gefallen! Morgen früh macht ihr euch dann auf euren Weg, und du kehrst nach Hause zurück.«
10Aber der Mann wollte nicht noch einmal über Nacht bleiben, sondern brach auf und zog fort und kam bis in die Gegend von Jebus, das ist Jerusalem; seine beiden gesattelten Esel, sein Nebenweib (und sein Diener) waren bei ihm.
11Als sie nun bei Jebus waren und der Tag schon stark zu Ende ging, sagte der Diener zu seinem Herrn: »Komm, laß uns hier in der Jebusiterstadt einkehren und darin übernachten!«
12Aber sein Herr erwiderte ihm: »Nein, wir wollen in keiner Stadt von fremden Leuten einkehren, die nicht zu den Israeliten gehören, sondern wollen bis Gibea weiterziehen.«
13Weiter sagte er zu seinem Diener: »Komm, wir wollen eine von den Ortschaften dort zu erreichen suchen und in Gibea oder in Rama über Nacht bleiben!«
14Als sie nun eiligst weiterzogen, ging die Sonne ihnen unter, als sie nahe bei Gibea waren, das zu Benjamin gehört.
15Da kehrten sie dort ein, um zu einem Nachtquartier in Gibea zu gelangen, und er machte nach seiner Ankunft auf dem Marktplatz der Stadt halt; aber da war niemand, der sie zum Übernachten ins Haus aufgenommen hätte.
16Endlich kam ein alter Mann abends vom Felde von seiner Arbeit heim; der stammte vom Gebirge Ephraim und lebte als Fremdling in Gibea, während die Bewohner des Ortes Benjaminiten waren.
17Als dieser nun sich umsah und den Wandersmann auf dem Marktplatz der Stadt erblickte, fragte er: »Wohin willst du, und woher kommst du?«
18Der antwortete ihm: »Wir sind auf der Wanderung von Bethlehem in Juda nach dem äußersten Teil des Gebirges Ephraim, wo ich zu Hause bin. Ich war nach Bethlehem in Juda gereist und will jetzt nach meinem Wohnort zurückkehren; aber niemand nimmt mich in sein Haus auf,
19obgleich wir sowohl Stroh als auch Futter für unsere Esel und auch Brot und Wein für mich und deine Magd und für den Burschen, der hier bei uns, deinen Knechten, ist, bei uns haben und nichts weiter bedürfen.«
20Da sagte der alte Mann: »Friede dir! Nur, was du bedarfst, laß meine Sorge sein! Doch auf dem Platz hier sollst du nicht übernachten!«
21Dann nahm er ihn in sein Haus mit und mengte Futter für die Esel; und als sie sich die Füße gewaschen hatten, aßen und tranken sie.
22Während sie so sich gütlich taten, umringten die Männer der Stadt, nichtsnutzige Buben, das Haus, schlugen laut an die Tür und riefen dem alten Manne, dem das Haus gehörte, die Worte zu: »Gib den Mann heraus, der bei dir eingekehrt ist: wir wollen uns an ihn machen!«
23Da ging der Besitzer des Hauses zu ihnen hinaus und sagte zu ihnen: »Nicht doch, meine Brüder! Begeht doch nichts so Böses! Nachdem dieser Mann in mein Haus gekommen ist, dürft ihr eine solche Schandtat nimmermehr verüben.
24Da ist meine Tochter, die Jungfrau, und das Nebenweib dieses Mannes: die will ich euch herausbringen; denen mögt ihr Gewalt antun und mit ihnen machen, was euch gefällt, aber an diesem Manne dürft ihr eine solche Schandtat nicht verüben!«
25Aber die Männer wollten nicht auf ihn hören. Da nahm der Mann sein Nebenweib und führte sie zu ihnen hinaus auf die Straße, und sie mißbrauchten sie und taten ihr Gewalt an die ganze Nacht hindurch bis zum Morgen; erst bei Tagesanbruch ließen sie sie gehen.
26Als nun der Morgen tagte, kam das Weib heim und fiel am Toreingang zum Hause des Mannes, woselbst ihr Herr war, nieder und blieb da liegen, bis es hell wurde.
27Als nun ihr Herr am Morgen aufstand und die Haustür öffnete und hinaustrat, um seines Weges weiter zu ziehen, fand er das Weib, sein Nebenweib, am Toreingang zum Hause liegen mit den Händen auf der Schwelle.
28Er rief ihr zu: »Stehe auf, wir wollen weiterziehen!«, aber es erfolgte keine Antwort. Da hob er sie auf den Esel, machte sich dann auf und zog nach seinem Wohnort.
29Als er dort in sein Haus gekommen war, nahm er ein Messer, ergriff sein Nebenweib, zerschnitt sie Glied für Glied in zwölf Stücke und schickte diese im ganzen Gebiet Israels umher.
30Da erklärte denn jeder, der das sah: »So etwas ist bisher noch nicht vorgekommen und noch nicht erlebt worden seit der Zeit, wo die Israeliten aus dem Lande Ägypten heraufgezogen sind, bis zum heutigen Tage. Nehmt es zu Herzen, beratet euch und redet!«

1EN aquellos días, cuando no había rey en Israel, hubo un Levita que moraba como peregrino en los lados del monte de Ephraim, el cual se había tomado mujer concubina de Beth-lehem de Judá.
2Y su concubina adulteró contra él, y fuese de él á casa de su padre, á Beth-lehem de Judá, y estuvo allá por tiempo de cuatro meses.
3Y levantóse su marido, y siguióla, para hablarle amorosamente y volverla, llevando consigo un criado suyo y un par de asnos; y ella le metió en la casa de su padre.
4Y viéndole el padre de la moza, salióle á recibir gozoso; y detúvole su suegro, padre de la moza, y quedó en su casa tres días, comiendo y bebiendo, y reposando allí.
5Y al cuarto día, como se levantaron de mañana, levantóse también el Levita para irse, y el padre de la moza dijo á su yerno: Conforta tu corazón con un bocado de pan, y después os iréis.
6Y sentáronse ellos dos juntos, y comieron y bebieron. Y el padre de la moza dijo al varón: Yo te ruego que te quieras quedar aquí esta noche, y alegraráse tu corazón.
7Y levantándose el varón para irse, el suegro le constriñó á que tornase y tuviese allí la noche.
8Y al quinto día levantándose de mañana para irse, díjole el padre de la moza: Conforta ahora tu corazón. Y habiendo comido ambos á dos, detuviéronse hasta que ya declinaba el día.
9Levantóse luego el varón para irse, él, y su concubina, y su criado. Entonces su suegro, el padre de la moza, le dijo: He aquí el día declina para ponerse el sol, ruégote que os estéis aquí la noche; he aquí que el día se acaba, ten aquí la noche, para que se alegre tu corazón; y mañana os levantaréis temprano á vuestro camino, y llegarás á tus tiendas.
10Mas el hombre no quiso quedar allí la noche, sino que se levantó y partió, y llegó hasta enfrente de Jebus, que es Jerusalem, con su par de asnos aparejados, y con su concubina.
11Y estando ya junto á Jebus, el día había declinado mucho: y dijo el criado á su señor: Ven ahora, y vámonos á esta ciudad de los Jebuseos, para que tengamos en ella la noche.
12Y su señor le respondió: No iremos á ninguna ciudad de extranjeros, que no sea de los hijos de Israel: antes pasaremos hasta Gabaa. Y dijo á su criado:
13Ven, lleguemos á uno de esos lugares, para tener la noche en Gabaa, ó en Rama.
14Pasando pues, caminaron, y púsoseles el sol junto á Gabaa, que era de Benjamín.
15Y apartáronse del camino para entrar á tener allí la noche en Gabaa; y entrando, sentáronse en la plaza de la ciudad, porque no hubo quien los acogiese en casa para pasar la noche.
16Y he aquí un hombre viejo, que á la tarde venía del campo de trabajar; el cual era del monte de Ephraim, y moraba como peregrino en Gabaa, pero los moradores de aquel lugar eran hijos de Benjamín.
17Y alzando el viejo los ojos, vió á aquel viajante en la plaza de la ciudad, y díjole: ¿A dónde vas, y de dónde vienes?
18Y él respondió: Pasamos de Beth-lehem de Judá á los lados del monte de Ephraim, de donde yo soy; y partí hasta Beth-lehem de Judá; y voy á la casa de Jehová, y no hay quien me reciba en casa,
19Aunque nosotros tenemos paja y de comer para nuestros asnos, y también tenemos pan y vino para mí y para tu sierva, y para el criado que está con tu siervo; de nada tenemos falta.
20Y el hombre viejo dijo: Paz sea contigo; tu necesidad toda sea solamente á mi cargo, con tal que no tengas la noche en la plaza.
21Y metiéndolos en su casa, dió de comer á sus asnos; y ellos se lavaron los pies, y comieron y bebieron.
22Y cuando estaban gozosos, he aquí, que los hombres de aquella ciudad, hombres hijos de Belial, cercan la casa, y batían las puertas, diciendo al hombre viejo dueño de la casa: Saca fuera el hombre que ha entrado en tu casa, para que lo conozcamos.
23Y saliendo á ellos aquel varón, amo de la casa, díjoles: No, hermanos míos, ruégoos que no cometáis este mal, pues que este hombre ha entrado en mi casa, no hagáis esta maldad.
24He aquí mi hija virgen, y la concubina de él: yo os las sacaré ahora; humilladlas, y haced con ellas como os pareciere, y no hagáis á este hombre cosa tan infame.
25Mas aquellos hombres no le quisieron oir; por lo que tomando aquel hombre su concubina, sacósela fuera: y ellos la conocieron, y abusaron de ella toda la noche hasta la mañana, y dejáronla cuando apuntaba el alba.
26Y ya que amanecía, la mujer vino, y cayó delante de la puerta de la casa de aquel hombre donde su señor estaba, hasta que fué de día.
27Y levantándose de mañana su señor, abrió las puertas de la casa, y salió para ir su camino, y he aquí, la mujer su concubina estaba tendida delante de la puerta de la casa, con las manos sobre el umbral.
28Y él le dijo: Levántate, y vámonos. Mas ella no respondió. Entonces la levantó el varón, y echándola sobre su asno, levantóse y fuése á su lugar.
29Y en llegando á su casa, toma un cuchillo, y echa mano de su concubina, y despedázala con sus huesos en doce partes, y enviólas por todos los términos de Israel.
30Y todo el que lo veía, decía: Jamás se ha hecho ni visto tal cosa, desde el tiempo que los hijos de Israel subieron de la tierra de Egipto hasta hoy. Considerad esto, dad consejo, y hablad.

1And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.
2And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there four whole months.
3And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
4And his father in law, the damsel’s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.
5And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
6And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.
7And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.
8And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
9And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
10But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.
11And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.
12And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.
13And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.
14And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
15And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.
16And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.
17And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?
18And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
19Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.
20And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.
21So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
22Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
23And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
24Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.
25But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
26Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.
27And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.
28And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
29And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
30And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
World English Bible
1In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took for himself a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.
2His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there for four months.
3Her husband arose and went after her to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him and a couple of donkeys. She brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
4His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, kept him there; and he stayed with him three days. So they ate and drank, and stayed there.
5On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning, and he rose up to depart. The young lady’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way.”
6So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together. Then the young lady’s father said to the man, “Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry.”
7The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he stayed there again.
8He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady’s father said, “Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines;” and they both ate.
9When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady’s father, said to him, “Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night. Behold, the day is ending. Stay here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.”
10But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and went near Jebus (also called Jerusalem). With him were a couple of saddled donkeys. His concubine also was with him.
11When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Please come and let’s enter into this city of the Jebusites, and stay in it.”
12His master said to him, “We won’t enter into the city of a foreigner that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.”
13He said to his servant, “Come and let’s draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.”
14So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.
15They went over there, to go in to stay in Gibeah. He went in, and sat down in the street of the city; for there was no one who took them into his house to stay.
16Behold, an old man came from his work out of the field at evening. Now the man was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.
17He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”
18He said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to the LORD’s house; and there is no one who has taken me into his house.
19Yet there is both straw and feed for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your servant, and for the young man who is with your servants. There is no lack of anything.”
20The old man said, “Peace be to you! Just let me supply all your needs, but don’t sleep in the street.”
21So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder. Then they washed their feet, and ate and drank.
22As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain wicked fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we can have sex with him!”
23The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly.
24Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.”
25But the men wouldn’t listen to him; so the man grabbed his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning. When the day began to dawn, they let her go.
26Then the woman came in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, until it was light.
27Her lord rose up in the morning and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine had fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold.
28He said to her, “Get up, and let’s get going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.
29When he had come into his house, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.
30It was so, that all who saw it said, “Such a deed has not been done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”
