1Il arriva aussi en ce temps-là, n’y ayant point de Roi en Israël, qu’il y eut un Lévite, demeurant aux côtés de la montagne d’Ephraïm, qui prit une femme concubine de Bethléhem de Juda.
2Mais sa concubine paillarda chez lui, et s’en alla d’avec lui en la maison de son père en Bethléhem de Juda, et elle y fut quelques jours, savoir l’espace de quatre mois.
3Puis son mari se leva, et s’en alla après elle, pour lui parler selon son coeur, et pour la ramener. Il avait aussi avec soi son serviteur, et deux ânes ; et elle le fit entrer dans la maison de son père ; et le père de la jeune femme le voyant se réjouit de son arrivée.
4Son beau-père donc, père de la jeune femme, le retint à grande instance; de sorte qu’il demeura avec lui trois jours ; et ils mangèrent et burent, et logèrent là.
5Et au quatrième jour s’étant levé de bon matin, il se mit en chemin pour s’en aller ; mais le père de la jeune femme dit à son beau- fils : Fortifie ton coeur avec une bouchée de pain, et puis vous vous en irez.
6Ils s’assirent donc, et mangèrent et burent eux deux ensemble ; et le père de la jeune femme dit au mari : Je te prie qu’il te plaise de passer encore ici cette nuit, et que ton coeur se réjouisse.
7Et comme le mari se fut mis en chemin pour s’en aller, son beau- père le pressa tellement, qu’il s’en retourna ; et il y passa encore la nuit.
8Et au cinquième jour il se leva de bon matin pour s’en aller, et le père de la jeune femme dit : Je te prie, fortifie ton cœur ; et ils tardèrent tant, que le jour baissa pendant qu’ils mangeaient eux deux ensemble.
9Puis le mari se mit en chemin pour s’en aller, lui et sa concubine, avec son serviteur. Et son beau-père le père de la jeune femme, lui dit : Voici maintenant le jour baisse, il se fait tard, je vous prie passez ici la nuit, voici le jour finit, passe ici la nuit, et que ton coeur se réjouisse ; et demain au matin vous vous lèverez pour aller votre chemin, et tu t’en iras en ta maison.
10Mais le mari ne voulut point y passer la nuit ; mais il se leva, et s’en alla et vint jusque vis-à-vis de Jébus, qui est Jérusalem, ayant avec soi ses deux ânes embâtés, et sa concubine.
11Or comme ils étaient près de Jébus, et que le jour était fort avancé, le serviteur dit à son maître : Marchez, je vous prie, et détournons-nous vers cette ville des Jébusiens, afin que nous y passions la nuit.
12Et son maître lui répondit : Nous ne nous détournerons point vers aucune ville des étrangers, où il n’y a point d’enfants d’Israël ; mais nous passerons jusqu’à Guibha.
13Il dit aussi à son serviteur : Marche, et nous gagnerons l’un de ces lieux-là, et nous passerons la nuit à Guibha, ou à Rama.
14Ils passèrent donc plus avant et marchèrent, et le soleil se coucha comme ils furent près de Guibha, qui appartient à Benjamin.
15Alors ils se détournèrent vers Guibha pour y entrer et y passer la nuit ; et y étant entrés, ils demeurèrent en la place de la ville, car il n’y avait personne qui les retirât chez soi afin qu’ils y passassent la nuit.
16Et voici sur le soir un vieux homme venait des champs de son travail, et cet homme était de la montagne d’Ephraïm, mais il demeurait à Guibha, dont les habitants étaient enfants de Jémini.
17Et levant ses yeux il vit dans la place de la ville ce passant ; et cet homme vieux lui dit : Où vas-tu, et d’où viens-tu ?
18Et il lui répondit : Nous passons de Bethléhem de Juda vers les côtés de la montagne d’Ephraïm, d’où je suis, parce que j’étais allé jusqu’à Bethléhem de Juda, mais maintenant je m’en vais à la maison de l’Eternel, et il n’y a ici personne qui me retire chez lui.
19Nous avons pourtant de la paille et du fourrage pour nos ânes, et du pain et du vin pour moi et pour ta servante, et pour le garçon qui est avec tes serviteurs ; nous n’avons besoin d’aucune chose.
20Et le vieillard lui dit : Paix te soit, quoi qu’il en soit je me charge de tout ce dont tu as besoin ; je te prie seulement de ne passer point la nuit dans la place.
21Alors il le fit entrer en sa maison, et il donna du fourrage aux ânes ; ils lavèrent leurs pieds, mangèrent et burent.
22Comme ils faisaient bonne chère, voici les gens de la ville, hommes fort corrompus, environnèrent la maison, heurtant à la porte, et ils parlèrent au vieux homme, maître de la maison, en disant : Fais sortir cet homme qui est entré en ta maison, afin que nous le connaissions.
23Mais cet homme, savoir le maître de la maison, sortit vers eux, et leur dit : Non, mes frères, ne lui faites point de mal, je vous prie : puisque cet homme est entré en ma maison, ne faites point une telle infamie.
24Voici, j’ai une fille vierge, et cet homme a sa concubine, je vous les amènerai dehors maintenant, et vous les violerez, et vous ferez d’elles comme il vous semblera bon ; mais ne commettez point cette action infâme à l’égard de cet homme.
25Mais ces gens-là ne voulurent point l’écouter ; c’est pourquoi cet homme prit sa concubine, et la leur amena dehors ; et ils la connurent, et abusèrent d’elle toute la nuit jusques au matin, puis ils la renvoyèrent comme l’aube du jour se levait.
26Cette femme donc, comme le jour approchait, s’en revint, et étant tombée à la porte de la maison de l’homme où était son Seigneur, elle y demeura jusqu’au jour.
27Et son Seigneur se leva de bon matin, et ayant ouvert la porte il sortait pour continuer son chemin ; mais voici, sa femme concubine était tombée à la porte de la maison, et avait les mains sur le seuil.
28Et il lui dit : Lève-toi, et allons-nous-en ; mais elle ne répondait point. Alors il la chargea sur un âne, et se mit en chemin, et s’en alla en son lieu.
29Et étant venu en sa maison, il prit un couteau, et empoignant sa concubine il la partagea avec ses os en douze parts, et en envoya dans tous les Cantons d’Israël.
30Et il arriva que tous ceux qui virent cela dirent : Une telle chose n’a été faite ni vue depuis le jour que les enfants d’Israël sont montés hors du pays d’Egypte, jusqu’à ce jour. Pensez à cela, consultez, et prononcez.

1EN aquellos días, cuando no había rey en Israel, hubo un Levita que moraba como peregrino en los lados del monte de Ephraim, el cual se había tomado mujer concubina de Beth-lehem de Judá.
2Y su concubina adulteró contra él, y fuese de él á casa de su padre, á Beth-lehem de Judá, y estuvo allá por tiempo de cuatro meses.
3Y levantóse su marido, y siguióla, para hablarle amorosamente y volverla, llevando consigo un criado suyo y un par de asnos; y ella le metió en la casa de su padre.
4Y viéndole el padre de la moza, salióle á recibir gozoso; y detúvole su suegro, padre de la moza, y quedó en su casa tres días, comiendo y bebiendo, y reposando allí.
5Y al cuarto día, como se levantaron de mañana, levantóse también el Levita para irse, y el padre de la moza dijo á su yerno: Conforta tu corazón con un bocado de pan, y después os iréis.
6Y sentáronse ellos dos juntos, y comieron y bebieron. Y el padre de la moza dijo al varón: Yo te ruego que te quieras quedar aquí esta noche, y alegraráse tu corazón.
7Y levantándose el varón para irse, el suegro le constriñó á que tornase y tuviese allí la noche.
8Y al quinto día levantándose de mañana para irse, díjole el padre de la moza: Conforta ahora tu corazón. Y habiendo comido ambos á dos, detuviéronse hasta que ya declinaba el día.
9Levantóse luego el varón para irse, él, y su concubina, y su criado. Entonces su suegro, el padre de la moza, le dijo: He aquí el día declina para ponerse el sol, ruégote que os estéis aquí la noche; he aquí que el día se acaba, ten aquí la noche, para que se alegre tu corazón; y mañana os levantaréis temprano á vuestro camino, y llegarás á tus tiendas.
10Mas el hombre no quiso quedar allí la noche, sino que se levantó y partió, y llegó hasta enfrente de Jebus, que es Jerusalem, con su par de asnos aparejados, y con su concubina.
11Y estando ya junto á Jebus, el día había declinado mucho: y dijo el criado á su señor: Ven ahora, y vámonos á esta ciudad de los Jebuseos, para que tengamos en ella la noche.
12Y su señor le respondió: No iremos á ninguna ciudad de extranjeros, que no sea de los hijos de Israel: antes pasaremos hasta Gabaa. Y dijo á su criado:
13Ven, lleguemos á uno de esos lugares, para tener la noche en Gabaa, ó en Rama.
14Pasando pues, caminaron, y púsoseles el sol junto á Gabaa, que era de Benjamín.
15Y apartáronse del camino para entrar á tener allí la noche en Gabaa; y entrando, sentáronse en la plaza de la ciudad, porque no hubo quien los acogiese en casa para pasar la noche.
16Y he aquí un hombre viejo, que á la tarde venía del campo de trabajar; el cual era del monte de Ephraim, y moraba como peregrino en Gabaa, pero los moradores de aquel lugar eran hijos de Benjamín.
17Y alzando el viejo los ojos, vió á aquel viajante en la plaza de la ciudad, y díjole: ¿A dónde vas, y de dónde vienes?
18Y él respondió: Pasamos de Beth-lehem de Judá á los lados del monte de Ephraim, de donde yo soy; y partí hasta Beth-lehem de Judá; y voy á la casa de Jehová, y no hay quien me reciba en casa,
19Aunque nosotros tenemos paja y de comer para nuestros asnos, y también tenemos pan y vino para mí y para tu sierva, y para el criado que está con tu siervo; de nada tenemos falta.
20Y el hombre viejo dijo: Paz sea contigo; tu necesidad toda sea solamente á mi cargo, con tal que no tengas la noche en la plaza.
21Y metiéndolos en su casa, dió de comer á sus asnos; y ellos se lavaron los pies, y comieron y bebieron.
22Y cuando estaban gozosos, he aquí, que los hombres de aquella ciudad, hombres hijos de Belial, cercan la casa, y batían las puertas, diciendo al hombre viejo dueño de la casa: Saca fuera el hombre que ha entrado en tu casa, para que lo conozcamos.
23Y saliendo á ellos aquel varón, amo de la casa, díjoles: No, hermanos míos, ruégoos que no cometáis este mal, pues que este hombre ha entrado en mi casa, no hagáis esta maldad.
24He aquí mi hija virgen, y la concubina de él: yo os las sacaré ahora; humilladlas, y haced con ellas como os pareciere, y no hagáis á este hombre cosa tan infame.
25Mas aquellos hombres no le quisieron oir; por lo que tomando aquel hombre su concubina, sacósela fuera: y ellos la conocieron, y abusaron de ella toda la noche hasta la mañana, y dejáronla cuando apuntaba el alba.
26Y ya que amanecía, la mujer vino, y cayó delante de la puerta de la casa de aquel hombre donde su señor estaba, hasta que fué de día.
27Y levantándose de mañana su señor, abrió las puertas de la casa, y salió para ir su camino, y he aquí, la mujer su concubina estaba tendida delante de la puerta de la casa, con las manos sobre el umbral.
28Y él le dijo: Levántate, y vámonos. Mas ella no respondió. Entonces la levantó el varón, y echándola sobre su asno, levantóse y fuése á su lugar.
29Y en llegando á su casa, toma un cuchillo, y echa mano de su concubina, y despedázala con sus huesos en doce partes, y enviólas por todos los términos de Israel.
30Y todo el que lo veía, decía: Jamás se ha hecho ni visto tal cosa, desde el tiempo que los hijos de Israel subieron de la tierra de Egipto hasta hoy. Considerad esto, dad consejo, y hablad.

1And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite sojourning on the side of mount Ephraim, who took to him a concubine out of Beth-lehem-judah.
2And his concubine played the whore against him, and went away from him unto her father’s house to Beth-lehem-judah, and was there four whole months.
3And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the damsel saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
4And his father in law, the damsel’s father, retained him; and he abode with him three days: so they did eat and drink, and lodged there.
5And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.
6And they sat down, and did eat and drink both of them together: for the damsel’s father had said unto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tarry all night, and let thine heart be merry.
7And when the man rose up to depart, his father in law urged him: therefore he lodged there again.
8And he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart: and the damsel’s father said, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee. And they tarried until afternoon, and they did eat both of them.
9And when the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father in law, the damsel’s father, said unto him, Behold, now the day draweth toward evening, I pray you tarry all night: behold, the day groweth to an end, lodge here, that thine heart may be merry; and to morrow get you early on your way, that thou mayest go home.
10But the man would not tarry that night, but he rose up and departed, and came over against Jebus, which is Jerusalem; and there were with him two asses saddled, his concubine also was with him.
11And when they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said unto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let us turn in into this city of the Jebusites, and lodge in it.
12And his master said unto him, We will not turn aside hither into the city of a stranger, that is not of the children of Israel; we will pass over to Gibeah.
13And he said unto his servant, Come, and let us draw near to one of these places to lodge all night, in Gibeah, or in Ramah.
14And they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down upon them when they were by Gibeah, which belongeth to Benjamin.
15And they turned aside thither, to go in and to lodge in Gibeah: and when he went in, he sat him down in a street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodging.
16And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites.
17And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou?
18And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.
19Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing.
20And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street.
21So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
22Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him.
23And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly.
24Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.
25But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go.
26Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.
27And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold.
28And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
29And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel.
30And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.
World English Bible
1In those days, when there was no king in Israel, there was a certain Levite living on the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim, who took for himself a concubine out of Bethlehem Judah.
2His concubine played the prostitute against him, and went away from him to her father’s house to Bethlehem Judah, and was there for four months.
3Her husband arose and went after her to speak kindly to her, to bring her again, having his servant with him and a couple of donkeys. She brought him into her father’s house; and when the father of the young lady saw him, he rejoiced to meet him.
4His father-in-law, the young lady’s father, kept him there; and he stayed with him three days. So they ate and drank, and stayed there.
5On the fourth day, they got up early in the morning, and he rose up to depart. The young lady’s father said to his son-in-law, “Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward you shall go your way.”
6So they sat down, ate, and drank, both of them together. Then the young lady’s father said to the man, “Please be pleased to stay all night, and let your heart be merry.”
7The man rose up to depart; but his father-in-law urged him, and he stayed there again.
8He arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart; and the young lady’s father said, “Please strengthen your heart and stay until the day declines;” and they both ate.
9When the man rose up to depart, he, and his concubine, and his servant, his father-in-law, the young lady’s father, said to him, “Behold, now the day draws toward evening, please stay all night. Behold, the day is ending. Stay here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.”
10But the man wouldn’t stay that night, but he rose up and went near Jebus (also called Jerusalem). With him were a couple of saddled donkeys. His concubine also was with him.
11When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Please come and let’s enter into this city of the Jebusites, and stay in it.”
12His master said to him, “We won’t enter into the city of a foreigner that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.”
13He said to his servant, “Come and let’s draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.”
14So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.
15They went over there, to go in to stay in Gibeah. He went in, and sat down in the street of the city; for there was no one who took them into his house to stay.
16Behold, an old man came from his work out of the field at evening. Now the man was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he lived in Gibeah; but the men of the place were Benjamites.
17He lifted up his eyes, and saw the wayfaring man in the street of the city; and the old man said, “Where are you going? Where did you come from?”
18He said to him, “We are passing from Bethlehem Judah to the farther side of the hill country of Ephraim. I am from there, and I went to Bethlehem Judah. I am going to the LORD’s house; and there is no one who has taken me into his house.
19Yet there is both straw and feed for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your servant, and for the young man who is with your servants. There is no lack of anything.”
20The old man said, “Peace be to you! Just let me supply all your needs, but don’t sleep in the street.”
21So he brought him into his house, and gave the donkeys fodder. Then they washed their feet, and ate and drank.
22As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain wicked fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we can have sex with him!”
23The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly.
24Behold, here is my virgin daughter and his concubine. I will bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them what seems good to you; but to this man don’t do any such folly.”
25But the men wouldn’t listen to him; so the man grabbed his concubine, and brought her out to them; and they had sex with her, and abused her all night until the morning. When the day began to dawn, they let her go.
26Then the woman came in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, until it was light.
27Her lord rose up in the morning and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way; and behold, the woman his concubine had fallen down at the door of the house, with her hands on the threshold.
28He said to her, “Get up, and let’s get going!” but no one answered. Then he took her up on the donkey; and the man rose up, and went to his place.
29When he had come into his house, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, and divided her, limb by limb, into twelve pieces, and sent her throughout all the borders of Israel.
30It was so, that all who saw it said, “Such a deed has not been done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt to this day! Consider it, take counsel, and speak.”
