1Als nun Simson nach Thimnath hinabging, lernte er in Thimnath ein philistäisches Mädchen kennen.
2Da ging er hinauf und erzählte es seinen Eltern, indem er sprach: Ich habe in Thimnath ein philistäisches Mädchen kennen gelernt, gebt mir die zum Weibe!
3Seine Eltern erwiderten ihm: Giebt es denn unter den Töchtern deiner Stammesgenossen und in meinem ganzen Volke kein Weib, daß du dir auswärts bei den Philistern, den Unbeschnittenen, ein Weib holen willst? Simson entgegnete seinem Vater: Diese gieb mir, denn sie sagt mir zu!
4Aber seine Eltern wußten nicht, daß das eine Fügung Jahwes war, weil er den Philistern gegenüber nach einem Anlasse suchte. Zu jener Zeit herrschten nämlich die Philister über Israel.
5So ging Simson mit seinen Eltern hinunter nach Thimnath. Als sie nun an die Weingärten von Thimnath gelangten, trat ihm plötzlich ein junger Löwe brüllend in den Weg.
6Da überkam ihn der Geist Jahwes, daß er ihn zerriß, wie man ein Böckchen zerreißt, ohne daß er irgend etwas in der Hand hatte. Seinen Eltern aber sagte er nicht, was er gethan hatte.
7Dann ging er vollends hinab und besprach sich mit dem Mädchen, und sie sagte Simson zu.
8Nach einiger Zeit kam er wieder, um sie heimzuführen. Als er nun vom Wege abbog, um nach dem toten Löwen zu sehen, da fand sich in dem Aase des Löwen ein Bienenschwarm mit Honig.
9Er bemächtigte sich seiner, nahm ihn in seine hohlen Hände und aß im Weitergehen. Als er sodann zu seinen Eltern kam, gab er ihnen auch davon zu essen, sagte ihnen aber nicht, daß er den Honig aus dem Aase des Löwen an sich gebracht hatte.
10Darauf ging sein Vater zu dem Mädchen hinab, und Simson veranstaltete dort ein Gelage; denn so pflegten es die jungen Leute zu halten.
11Aber aus Furcht vor ihm bestellten sie dreißig Brautgesellen, die um ihn sein mußten.
12Zu diesen sprach Simson: Ich will euch einmal ein Rätsel aufgeben: Könnt ihr es mir während der sieben Tage des Gelages lösen und es erraten, so gebe ich euch dreißig Unterkleider und dreißig Festgewänder;
13seid ihr aber nicht imstande, es mir zu lösen, so habt ihr mir dreißig Unterkleider und dreißig Festgewänder zu geben! Sie erwiderten ihm: Gieb dein Rätsel auf, daß wir es hören!
14Da sprach er zu ihnen: Speise ging aus vom Fresser, und Süßigkeit ging aus von dem Starken. Aber sie vermochten das Rätsel drei Tage lang nicht zu lösen.
15Am vierten Tag aber baten sie Simsons Weib: Berede doch deinen Mann, daß er uns das Rätsel löst, sonst verbrennen wir dich samt deines Vaters Hause! Nicht wahr, ihr habt uns nur geladen, um uns arm zu machen?
16Nun weinte Simsons Weib diesem vor und rief: Nur Abneigung hast du für mich, nicht Liebe; du hast meinen Volksgenossen ein Rätsel aufgegeben, mir aber hast du es nicht verraten! Er erwiderte ihr: Habe ich es doch meinem Vater und meiner Mutter nicht verraten und sollte es dir verraten?
17Da weinte sie ihm die sieben Tage, während welcher sie das Gelage hielten, vor. Am siebenten Tag endlich verriet er es ihr, weil sie ihm arg zugesetzt hatte. Sie aber verriet das Rätsel ihren Volksgenossen.
18Am siebenten Tage sagten denn die Leute der Stadt zu ihm, ehe er in das Brautgemach ging: Was ist süßer, als Honig? Und was ist stärker, als der Löwe? Er erwiderte ihnen: Hättet ihr nicht mit meinem Kalbe gepflügt, so hättet ihr mein Rätsel nicht erraten!
19Da überkam ihn der Geist Jahwes, daß er hinab nach Askalon ging und dreißig Mann von ihnen erschlug. Denen nahm er ab, was sie an sich hatten, und gab die Festgewänder denen, die das Rätsel erraten hatten. Und er geriet in großen Zorn und ging hinauf in seines Vaters Haus.
20Simsons Weib aber wurde seinem Gesellen zu teil, den er sich beigesellt hatte.

1Y DESCENDIENDO Samsón á Timnah, vió en Timnah una mujer de las hijas de los Filisteos.
2Y subió, y declarólo á su padre y á su madre, diciendo: Yo he visto en Timnah una mujer de las hijas de los Filisteos: ruégoos que me la toméis por mujer.
3Y su padre y su madre le dijeron: ¿No hay mujer entre las hijas de tus hermanos, ni en todo mi pueblo, para que vayas tú á tomar mujer de los Filisteos incircuncisos? Y Samsón respondió á su padre: Tómamela por mujer, porque ésta agradó á mis ojos.
4Mas su padre y su madre no sabían que esto venía de Jehová, y que él buscaba ocasión contra los Filisteos: porque en aquel tiempo los Filisteos dominaban sobre Israel.
5Y Samsón descendió con su padre y con su madre á Timnah: y como llegaron á las viñas de Timnah, he aquí un cachorro de león que venía bramando hacia él.
6Y el espíritu de Jehová cayó sobre él, y despedazólo como quien despedaza un cabrito, sin tener nada en su mano: y no dió á entender á su padre ni á su madre lo que había hecho.
7Vino pues, y habló á la mujer que había agradado á Samsón.
8Y volviendo después de algunos días para tomarla, apartóse para ver el cuerpo muerto del león, y he aquí en el cuerpo del león un enjambre de abejas, y un panal de miel.
9Y tomándolo en sus manos, fuése comiéndolo por el camino: y llegado que hubo á su padre y á su madre, dióles también á ellos que comiesen; mas no les descubrió que había tomado aquella miel del cuerpo del león.
10Vino pues su padre á la mujer, y Samsón hizo allí banquete; porque así solían hacer los mancebos.
11Y como ellos le vieron, tomaron treinta compañeros que estuviesen con él;
12A los cuales Samsón dijo: Yo os propondré ahora un enigma, el cual si en los siete días del banquete vosotros me declarareis y descubriereis, yo os daré treinta sábanas y treinta mudas de vestidos.
13Mas si no me lo supiereis declarar, vosotros me daréis las treinta sábanas y las treinta mudas de vestidos. Y ellos respondieron: Propónnos tu enigma, y lo oiremos.
14Entonces les dijo: Del comedor salió comida, y del fuerte salió dulzura. Y ellos no pudieron declararle el enigma en tres días.
15Y al séptimo día dijeron á la mujer de Samsón: Induce á tu marido á que nos declare este enigma, porque no te quememos á ti y á la casa de tu padre. ¿Habéisnos llamado aquí para poseernos?
16Y lloró la mujer de Samsón delante de él, y dijo: Solamente me aborreces y no me amas, pues que no me declaras el enigma que propusiste á los hijos de mi pueblo. Y él respondió: He aquí que ni á mi padre ni á mi madre lo he declarado; y ¿habíalo de declarar á ti?
17Y ella lloró delante de él los siete días que ellos tuvieron banquete: mas al séptimo día él se lo declaró, porque le constriñó; y ella lo declaró á los hijos de su pueblo.
18Y al séptimo día, antes que el sol se pusiese, los de la ciudad le dijeron: ¿Qué cosa más dulce que la miel? ¿y qué cosa más fuerte que el león?
19Y él les respondió: Si no araseis con mi novilla, nunca hubierais descubierto mi enigma.
20Y el espíritu de Jehová cayó sobre él, y descendió á Ascalón, é hirió treinta hombres de ellos; y tomando sus despojos, dió las mudas de vestidos á los que habían explicado el enigma: y encendido en enojo fuése á casa de su padre. Y la mujer de Samsón fué dada á su compañero, con el cual él antes se acompañaba.

1And Samson went down to Timnath, and saw a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines.
2And he came up, and told his father and his mother, and said, I have seen a woman in Timnath of the daughters of the Philistines: now therefore get her for me to wife.
3Then his father and his mother said unto him, Is there never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well.
4But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
5Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion roared against him.
6And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he rent him as he would have rent a kid, and he had nothing in his hand: but he told not his father or his mother what he had done.
7And he went down, and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well.
8And after a time he returned to take her, and he turned aside to see the carcase of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees and honey in the carcase of the lion.
9And he took thereof in his hands, and went on eating, and came to his father and mother, and he gave them, and they did eat: but he told not them that he had taken the honey out of the carcase of the lion.
10So his father went down unto the woman: and Samson made there a feast; for so used the young men to do.
11And it came to pass, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.
12And Samson said unto them, I will now put forth a riddle unto you: if ye can certainly declare it me within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty sheets and thirty change of garments:
13But if ye cannot declare it me, then shall ye give me thirty sheets and thirty change of garments. And they said unto him, Put forth thy riddle, that we may hear it.
14And he said unto them, Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days expound the riddle.
15And it came to pass on the seventh day, that they said unto Samson’s wife, Entice thy husband, that he may declare unto us the riddle, lest we burn thee and thy father’s house with fire: have ye called us to take that we have? is it not so?
16And Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, and hast not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, I have not told it my father nor my mother, and shall I tell it thee?
17And she wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the seventh day, that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: and she told the riddle to the children of her people.
18And the men of the city said unto him on the seventh day before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out my riddle.
19And the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, and he went up to his father’s house.
20But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, whom he had used as his friend.

1Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines.
2He came up, and told his father and his mother, saying, “I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. Now therefore get her for me as my wife.”
3Then his father and his mother said to him, “Isn’t there a woman among your brothers’ daughters, or among all my people, that you go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines?” Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for she pleases me well.”
4But his father and his mother didn’t know that it was of the LORD; for he sought an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines ruled over Israel.
5Then Samson went down to Timnah with his father and his mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah; and behold, a young lion roared at him.
6The LORD’s Spirit came mightily on him, and he tore him as he would have torn a young goat with his bare hands, but he didn’t tell his father or his mother what he had done.
7He went down and talked with the woman, and she pleased Samson well.
8After a while he returned to take her, and he went over to see the carcass of the lion; and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey.
9He took it into his hands, and went on, eating as he went. He came to his father and mother and gave to them, and they ate, but he didn’t tell them that he had taken the honey out of the lion’s body.
10His father went down to the woman; and Samson made a feast there, for the young men used to do so.
11When they saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him.
12Samson said to them, “Let me tell you a riddle now. If you can tell me the answer within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing;
13but if you can’t tell me the answer, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.” They said to him, “Tell us your riddle, that we may hear it.”
14He said to them, “Out of the eater came out food. Out of the strong came out sweetness.” They couldn’t in three days declare the riddle.
15On the seventh day, they said to Samson’s wife, “Entice your husband, that he may declare to us the riddle, lest we burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you called us to impoverish us? Isn’t that so?”
16Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, “You just hate me, and don’t love me. You’ve told a riddle to the children of my people, and haven’t told it to me.” He said to her, “Behold, I haven’t told my father or my mother, so why should I tell you?”
17She wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted; and on the seventh day, he told her, because she pressed him severely; and she told the riddle to the children of her people.
18The men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?” He said to them, “If you hadn’t plowed with my heifer, you wouldn’t have found out my riddle.”
19The LORD’s Spirit came mightily on him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck thirty men of them. He took their plunder, then gave the changes of clothing to those who declared the riddle. His anger burned, and he went up to his father’s house.
20But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, who had been his friend.
