EXISTÍA entonces Jephté, Galaadita, hombre valiente, hijo de una ramera, al cual había engendrado Galaad.
Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

Y la mujer de Galaad dio a luz hijos, y cuando sus hijos se convirtieron en hombres, enviaron a Jefté lejos, diciendo: No tienes parte en la herencia de la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de otra mujer.
Y la mujer de Galaad también le había parido hijos; los cuales cuando fueron grandes, echaron fuera á Jephté, diciéndole: No heredarás en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres bastardo.
And Gilead’s wife bare him sons; and his wife’s sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father’s house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.
Gilead’s wife bore him sons. When his wife’s sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out and said to him, “You will not inherit in our father’s house, for you are the son of another woman.”
Entonces Jefté huyó de sus hermanos y vivía en la tierra de Tob, donde varios hombres desalmados, que se unían a Jefté, salieron con él hacer redadas.
Huyendo pues Jephté á causa de sus hermanos, habitó en tierra de Tob; y juntáronse con él hombres ociosos, los cuales con él salían.
Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.

Y dijeron a Jefté: Ven y sé nuestro jefe, para que podamos hacer la guerra contra los hijos de Amón.

And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

Pero Jefté dijo a los hombres responsables de Galaad: ¿No me enviaron, lejos de la casa de mi padre, por su odio hacia mí? ¿Por qué vienen a mí ahora cuando están en problemas?
Y Jephté respondió á los ancianos de Galaad: ¿No me habéis vosotros aborrecido, y me echasteis de la casa de mi padre? ¿por qué pues venís ahora á mí cuando estáis en aflicción?
And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father’s house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?
Jephthah said to the elders of Gilead, “Didn’t you hate me, and drive me out of my father’s house? Why have you come to me now when you are in distress?”
Y los responsables de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: Por eso hemos vuelto a ti; Así que ve con nosotros y pelea contra los hijos de Amón, y te haremos nuestra cabeza sobre toda la gente de Galaad.
Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron á Jephté: Por esta misma causa tornamos ahora á ti, para que vengas con nosotros, y pelees contra los hijos de Ammón, y nos seas cabeza á todos los que moramos en Galaad.
And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.
The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “Therefore we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us and fight with the children of Ammon. You will be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.”
Entonces Jefté dijo a los hombres responsables de Galaad: Si me llevan para hacer la guerra contra los hijos de Amón, y si con la ayuda del Señor los venceré, ¿me harán su jefe?
Jephté entonces dijo á los ancianos de Galaad: Si me volvéis para que pelee contra los hijos de Ammón, y Jehová los entregare delante de mí, ¿seré yo vuestra cabeza?
And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

Y los hombres responsables de Galaad dijeron a Jefté: Que el Señor sea nuestro testigo: ciertamente haremos lo que tu digas.
Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron á Jephté: Jehová oiga entre nosotros, si no hiciéremos como tú dices.
And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.
The elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The LORD will be witness between us. Surely we will do what you say.”
Entonces Jefté fue con los hombres responsables de Galaad, y la gente le hizo cabeza y jefe sobre ellos; Y Jefté dijo todas estas cosas delante del Señor en Mizpa.

And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.
The king of the children of Ammon answered the messengers of Jephthah, “Because Israel took away my land when he came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon even to the Jabbok, and to the Jordan. Now therefore restore that territory again peaceably.”
Y Jefté volvió a enviar al rey de los hijos de Amón:

And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:

Pero cuando subieron de Egipto, Israel atravesó las tierras baldías hasta el Mar Rojo y llegó a Cades;

Entonces Israel envió a los hombres al rey de Edom, diciendo: Déjame pasar ahora por tu tierra; Pero el rey de Edom no les prestó oído. Y de la misma manera envió al rey de Moab, pero él no quiso; Israel siguió viviendo en Cades.

Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.

E Israel envió hombres a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, rey de Hesbón; Y le dijo Israel: Déjame pasar ahora por tu tierra a mi lugar.
Y envió Israel embajadores á Sehón rey de los Amorrheos, rey de Hesbón, diciéndole: Ruégote que me dejes pasar por tu tierra hasta mi lugar.
And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.

Si Chêmos tu dios te echase alguno, ¿no lo poseerías tú? Así poseeremos nosotros á todo aquel que echó Jehová nuestro Dios de delante de nosotros.
Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.
Won’t you possess that which Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whoever the LORD our God has dispossessed from before us, them will we possess.
¡Qué! ¿Eres mejor que Balac, el hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab? ¿Alguna vez tomó una causa contra Israel o hizo guerra contra ellos?

Mientras Israel vivía en Hesbón, y sus aldeas y en Aroer y sus aldeas y en todas las ciudades que están al lado del Arnón, durante trescientos años, ¿por qué no las recuperaron en todo ese tiempo?

While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?
Israel lived in Heshbon and its towns, and in Aroer and its towns, and in all the cities that are along the side of the Arnon for three hundred years! Why didn’t you recover them within that time?
No he hecho nada malo contra ti, pero me estás haciendo mal al luchar contra mí: que el Señor, que es el Juez hoy, sea juez entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón.

Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

El rey de los hijos de Amón, sin embargo, no escuchó las palabras que Jefté le envió.

Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
However, the king of the children of Ammon didn’t listen to the words of Jephthah which he sent him.
Entonces vino el espíritu del Señor sobre Jefté, y pasó por Galaad y Manasés, y llegó a Mizpa de Galaad; y de Mizpa de Galaad para invadir el territorio de los hijos de Amón.

Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD’s, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

Entonces Jefté se acercó a los hijos de Amón para hacerles la guerra; Y el Señor los entregó en sus manos.

E hizo un ataque contra ellos desde Aroer hasta Minit, invadiendo veinte ciudades, hasta las viñas de Abel-keramim, y mató Jefté a muchos enemigos. Y los hijos de Amón fueron dominados por los hijos de Israel.
Y los hirió de grandísimo estrago desde Aroer hasta llegar á Minnith, veinte ciudades; y hasta la vega de las viñas. Así fueron domeñados los Ammonitas delante de los hijos de Israel.
And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

Y cuando la vio, se llenó de dolor, y dijo: ¡Ah! ¡mi hija! Que gran dolor me causas, y eres tú quien es la causa principal de mi problema; porque he hecho un juramento al Señor y no puedo retirarlo.
Y como él la vió, rompió sus vestidos diciendo: ¡Ay, hija mía! de verdad me has abatido, y tú eres de los que me afligen: porque yo he abierto mi boca á Jehová, y no podré retractarme.
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
When he saw her, he tore his clothes, and said, “Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low, and you are one of those who trouble me; for I have opened my mouth to the LORD, and I can’t go back.”
Y ella le dijo: Padre mío, has hecho juramento al Señor; Hazme entonces lo que has dicho; porque el Señor ha enviado una recompensa completa a tus enemigos, a los hijos de Amón.
Ella entonces le respondió: Padre mío, si has abierto tu boca á Jehová, haz de mí como salió de tu boca, pues que Jehová ha hecho venganza en tus enemigos los hijos de Ammón.
And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.
She said to him, “My father, you have opened your mouth to the LORD; do to me according to that which has proceeded out of your mouth, because the LORD has taken vengeance for you on your enemies, even on the children of Ammon.”
Entonces ella le dijo a su padre: Sólo haz esto por mí: déjame tener dos meses para irme a las montañas con mis amigos, llorando por mi triste destino.
Y tornó á decir á su padre: Hágasme esto: déjame por dos meses que vaya y descienda por los montes, y llore mi virginidad, yo y mis compañeras.
And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.
Then she said to her father, “Let this thing be done for me. Leave me alone two months, that I may depart and go down on the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my companions.”
Y él dijo: Ve, pues. Así que la despidió por dos meses; y ella fue con sus amigos a las montañas, llorando por su triste destino.

And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
He said, “Go.” He sent her away for two months; and she departed, she and her companions, and mourned her virginity on the mountains.
Y al cabo de dos meses regresó con su padre, quien hizo con ella lo que había dicho en su juramento: y nunca había sido tocada por un hombre. Así se convirtió en una regla en Israel,

And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,

Que las mujeres vayan año tras año lamentando a la hija de Jefté la galaadita, cuatro días al año.
De aquí fué la costumbre en Israel que de año en año iban las doncellas de Israel á endechar á la hija de Jephté Galaadita, cuatro días en el año.
