1Im vierzehnten Jahre des Königs Ezechias zog Sanherib, Assyriens König, gegen Judas feste Städte, sie einzunehmen.
2Der König von Assyrien sandte den Rabsake von Lachis nach Jerusalem zum König Ezechias mit einer starken Heeresmacht; er stellte sich an des obern Teiches Wasserleitung auf, an der Straße nach dem Walkerfelde.
3Darauf ging Eljakim, Hilkias Sohn, des Hauses Vorstand, zu ihm hinaus, ebenso der Kanzler Sebna und der Ratsherr Joach, Asaphs Sohn.
4Da sprach Rabsake zu ihnen: "Berichtet Ezechias: So spricht der Großkönig, der König von Assyrien: 'Was ist es mit der Zuversicht, die du noch hegst?
5Du meinst vielleicht, ein bloßes Wort genüge schon für Kriegsplan und für Kriegerstärke? Auf wen verläßt du dich denn jetzt, daß du dich gegen mich empörst?
6Sieh, du verlässest auf Ägypten dich, auf diesen abgebrochenen Rohrstab, der jedem in die Hand fährt, der sich darauf stützt, und sie durchbohrt. So geht's mit Pharao, Ägyptens König, allen, die auf ihn vertrauen.
7Sagt ihr mir aber. "Nur auf den Herrn, auf unsern Gott, vertrauen wir,", ja ist nicht eben er es, dessen Höhen und Altäre Ezechias abgeschafft, als er Jerusalem und Juda anempfohlen: "Ihr sollt allein vor diesem Altar beten!"?
8Auf! Wette doch mit meinem Herrn, dem König von Assyrien! Ich wollte dir zweitausend Rosse geben, bist du imstande, für sie zu diesem Dienste Reiter zu beschaffen.
9Wie willst du auch nur einen der geringsten Knechte meines Herrn zum Abzug bringen, und du verlässest dich auf dies Ägypten, um seiner Rosse, seiner Wagen willen?
10Sodann! Bin ich ohne den Herrn verderbenbringend gegen dieses Land herangezogen? Der Herr hat selbst zu mir gesagt: "Zieh gegen dieses Land, verheere es!"'"
11Da sprachen Eljakim, Sebna und Joach zu Rabsake: "Sprich doch mit deinen Knechten aramäisch! Denn dies verstehen wir. Doch rede nicht judäisch mehr mit uns vor diesen Leuten auf der Mauer!"
12Da sprach Rabsake: "Hat mich mein Herr zu deinem Herrn allein und nur zu dir gesandt, dies zu verkünden? Gilt's nicht für diese Männer auf der Mauer? Sie haben ihren Kot zu essen und ihren Harn mit euch zu trinken."
13Und Rabsake gab nicht nach. Vielmehr rief er mit lauter Stimme auf judäisch und sprach: "Vernehmt die Worte des Großkönigs, des Assyrerkönigs!
14So spricht der König: 'Ezechias soll euch nicht betören! Er kann euch ja nicht retten.'
15Und laßt euch doch von Ezechias nicht vertrösten auf den Herrn, indem er sagte: 'Der Herr wird uns gewißlich retten; die Stadt fällt nicht in des Assyrerkönigs Hand.'
16Hört nicht auf Ezechias! Denn also spricht der König von Assyrien: 'Schließt mit mir doch Frieden und kommt zu mir heraus! Dann dürfet ihr, ein jeglicher, von seinem Weinstock und von seinem Feigenbaume essen und jeder seines Brunnens Wasser trinken,
17bis daß ich komme, euch in ein Land zu holen, das dem euren gleicht, zu einem Land voll Korn und Wein, zu einem Land voll Korn und Weinbergen.'
18Will aber Ezechias euch verführen, indem er spricht: 'Der Herr kann uns erretten' - ja, haben denn die Heidengötter, ein jeglicher sein Land, aus des Assyrerkönigs Hand errettet?
19Wo sind die Götter von Hamat und Arpad? Wo sind die Götter von Sepharvaim? Und wo die Götter von Samaria? Ja, haben sie vielleicht Samaria aus meiner Hand befreit?
20Wer ist doch unter all den Göttern dieser Länder, der sein Land aus meiner Hand errettet hätte? Jetzt sollte gar der Herr Jerusalem aus meiner Hand befreien?"
21Da schwiegen sie und sie erwiderten ihm nichts; denn des Königs Befehl lautete. "Ihr sollt ihm nichts erwidern!"
22Hierauf kamen Eljakim, Hilkias Sohn, des Hauses Vorstand, und Sebna, der Kanzler, und der Ratsherr Joach, Asaphs Sohn, zu Ezechias mit zerrissenen Kleidern und berichteten ihm des Rabsake Reden.

1ACONTECIÓ en el año catorce del rey Ezechîas, que Sennachêrib rey de Asiria subió contra todas las ciudades fuertes de Judá, y tomólas.
2Y el rey de Asiria envió á Rabsaces con grande ejército desde Lachîs á Jerusalem al rey Ezechîas: y asentó el campo á los caños de la pesquera de arriba, en el camino de la heredad del Lavador.
3Y salió á él Eliacim hijo de Hilcías mayordomo, y Sebna, escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph, canciller.
4A los cuales dijo Rabsaces: Ahora pues, diréis á Ezechîas: El gran rey, el rey de Asiria, dice así: ¿Qué confianza es ésta en que confías?
5Digo, alegas tú, (empero palabras vanas) que tengo consejo y fortaleza para la guerra. Ahora bien, ¿en quién confías que te rebelas contra mí?
6He aquí que confías en este bordón de caña frágil, en Egipto, sobre el cual si alguien se apoyare, entrarásele por la mano, y se la atravesará. Tal es Faraón rey de Egipto para con todos los que en él confían.
7Y si me dijeres, En Jehová nuestro Dios confiamos; ¿no es éste aquel cuyos altos y cuyos altares hizo quitar Ezechîas, y dijo á Judá y á Jerusalem: Delante de este altar adoraréis?
8Ahora pues yo te ruego que des rehenes al rey de Asiria mi señor, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si pudieres tú dar caballeros que cabalguen sobre ellos.
9¿Cómo pues harás volver el rostro de un capitán de los más pequeños siervos de mi señor, aunque estés confiado en Egipto por sus carros y hombres de á caballo?
10¿Y por ventura vine yo ahora á esta tierra para destruirla sin Jehová? Jehová me dijo: Sube á esta tierra para destruirla.
11Entonces dijo Eliacim, y Sebna y Joah á Rabsaces: Rogámoste que hables á tus siervos en lengua siriaca, porque nosotros la entendemos: y no hables con nosotros en lengua judáica, oyéndolo el pueblo que está sobre el muro.
12Y dijo Rabsaces: ¿Envióme mi señor á ti y á tu señor, á que dijese estas palabras, y no á los hombres que están sobre el muro, para comer su estiércol y beber su orina con vosotros?
13Púsose luego en pie Rabsaces, y gritó á grande voz en lengua judáica, diciendo: Oid las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria.
14El rey dice así: No os engañe Ezechîas, porque no os podrá librar.
15Ni os haga Ezechîas confiar en Jehová, diciendo: Ciertamente Jehová nos librará: no será entregada esta ciudad en manos del rey de Asiria.
16No escuchéis á Ezechîas: porque el rey de Asiria dice así: Haced conmigo paz, y salid á mí; y coma cada uno de su viña, y cada uno de su higuera, y beba cada cual las aguas de su pozo;
17Hasta que yo venga y os lleve á una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de grano y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas.
18Mirad no os engañe Ezechîas diciendo: Jehová nos librará. ¿Libraron los dioses de las gentes cada uno á su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria?
19¿Dónde está el dios de Hamath y de Arphad? ¿dónde está el dios de Sepharvaim? ¿libraron á Samaria de mi mano?
20¿Qué dios hay entre los dioses de estas tierras, que haya librado su tierra de mi mano, para que Jehová libre de mi mano á Jerusalem?
21Mas callaron, y no le respondieron palabra; porque el rey así lo había mandado, diciendo: No le respondáis.
22Entonces Eliacim hijo de Hilcías mayordomo, y Sebna escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph canciller, vinieron á Ezechîas rotos sus vestidos, y contáronle las palabras de Rabsaces.

1Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them.
2And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field.
3Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph’s son, the recorder.
4And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
5I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
6Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.
7But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
8Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.
9How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
11Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
12But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?
13Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
14Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
15Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
16Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;
17Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?
19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?
20Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
21But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
22Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
World English Bible
1Now in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.
2The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to King Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller’s field highway.
3Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph the recorder came out to him.
4Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘The great king, the king of Assyria, says, “What confidence is this in which you trust?
5I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?
6Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.
7But if you tell me, ‘We trust in the LORD our God,’ isn’t that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’?”
8Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.
9How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?
10Have I come up now without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, “Go up against this land, and destroy it.”’”
11Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it. Don’t speak to us in the Jews’ language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.”
12But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”
13Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria!
14The king says, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.
15Don’t let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, “The LORD will surely deliver us. This city won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”’
16Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for the king of Assyria says, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;
17until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.
18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, “The LORD will deliver us.” Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?
19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?
20Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’”
21But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king’s commandment was, “Don’t answer him.”
22Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
