1Malheur à l'orgueilleux diadème des buveurs d'Ephraïm, à la fleur qui se fane, ornement de leur parure, qui couronne la grasse vallée des hommes ivres de vin !
2Voici, un ennemi fort et puissant vient de la part du Seigneur, comme un orage de grêle, comme un ouragan destructeur ; pareil à une averse de grosses eaux qui débordent, il la jettera par terre de la main.
3On foulera aux pieds l'orgueilleux diadème des buveurs d'Ephraïm ;
4et il en sera de la fleur qui se fane, ornement de leur parure, qui couronne la grasse vallée, comme d'une figue mûrie avant l'été ; on la voit, et à peine l'a-t-on dans la main, qu'on l'avale.
5En ce jour-là, l'Eternel des armées sera un diadème de gloire et une couronne d'honneur pour le reste de son peuple ;
6il sera un esprit de droiture pour celui qui siège rendant justice et de vaillance pour ceux qui repoussent l'ennemi jusqu'à ses portes.
7Ceux-ci aussi chancellent dans le vin et sont troublés par la cervoise ; prêtre et prophète chancellent par la cervoise ; ils sont noyés dans le vin, troublés par la cervoise ; ils chancellent en prophétisant ; ils vacillent en jugeant.
8Car toutes les tables sont couvertes de vomissements dégoûtants ; il n'y a plus de place.
9A qui veut-il enseigner la sagesse, et à qui faire la leçon ? A des enfants à peine sevrés, arrachés à la mamelle ?
10Car c'est ordre sur ordre, ordre sur ordre, règle sur règle, règle sur règle, tantôt ceci, tantôt cela !
11Aussi est-ce par des gens qui bégaient et dans une langue étrangère qu'il parlera à ce peuple,
12auquel il avait dit : Voici le lieu du repos ; laissez reposer celui qui est las ; voici le soulagement ! Mais ils n'ont pas voulu écouter.
13La parole de l'Eternel sera donc pour eux ordre sur ordre, ordre sur ordre, règle sur règle, règle sur règle, tantôt ceci, tantôt cela, afin qu'ils aillent et qu'ils tombent à la renverse et se brisent et soient enlacés et soient pris !
14C'est pourquoi, écoutez la parole de l'Eternel, hommes moqueurs, chefs de ce peuple qui est à Jérusalem !
15Car vous dites : Nous avons fait un pacte avec la mort, et nous avons conclu une alliance avec le sépulcre ; quand le fléau débordant passera, il ne nous atteindra pas ; car nous avons fait du mensonge notre refuge et de la fraude notre abri !
16C'est pourquoi, ainsi a dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel : Voici, c'est moi qui ai mis pour fondement en Sion une pierre, pierre éprouvée, angulaire, de prix, solidement fondée ; celui qui s'y appuiera, n'aura pas à fuir.
17Et je prendrai le droit pour règle et la justice pour niveau ; et la grêle balayera le refuge de mensonge, et les eaux emporteront votre abri.
18Votre pacte avec la mort sera annulé, et votre alliance avec le sépulcre ne subsistera pas ; quand le fléau débordant passera, il vous foulera ;
19aussi souvent qu'il passera, il vous saisira ; car demain et demain encore il passera, de jour et de nuit ; la terreur seule fera la leçon !
20Car le lit est trop court pour s'y étendre, et la couverture trop étroite pour s'en envelopper.
21Car l'Eternel se lèvera comme à la montagne de Pératsim ; il grondera comme dans la vallée de Gabaon, pour faire son œuvre, œuvre singulière, et pour faire sa besogne, besogne étrange !
22Maintenant donc, cessez de vous moquer, de peur que vos liens ne se resserrent ; car j'ai entendu que la destruction est résolue par le Seigneur l'Eternel des armées contre toute la terre.
23Prêtez l'oreille, et écoutez ma voix ; soyez attentifs, et écoutez ma parole :
24Le laboureur est-il toujours à labourer pour semer, à ouvrir et à herser le sol ?
25Quand il en a aplani la surface, n'y jette-t-il pas l'aneth ; n'y sème-t-il pas le cumin ; ne met-il pas le froment en lignes, l'orge à une place réservée, et l'épeautre sur les bords ?
26C'est son Dieu qui l'instruit de ces règles et qui l'enseigne.
27Car ce n'est pas avec le rouleau qu'on foule l'aneth, et la roue du chariot ne passe point sur le cumin ; mais on bat l'aneth avec le bâton et le cumin avec la verge.
28On broie le grain ; pourtant, ce n'est pas indéfiniment qu'on le foule et qu'on y pousse la roue du chariot, et le pied des chevaux ne l'écrase pas.
29Cela aussi vient de l'Eternel des armées, qui est admirable en conseil, magnifique en moyens.

1¡AY de la corona de soberbia, de los ebrios de Ephraim, y de la flor caduca de la hermosura de su gloria, que está sobre la cabeza del valle fértil de los aturdidos del vino!
2He aquí Jehová tiene un fuerte y poderoso: como turbión de granizo y como torbellino trastornador; como ímpetu de recias aguas que inundan, con fuerza derriba á tierra.
3Con los pies será hollada la corona de soberbia de los borrachos de Ephraim;
4Y será la flor caduca de la hermosura de su gloria que está sobre la cabeza del valle fértil, como la fruta temprana, la primera del verano, la cual, en viéndola el que la mira, se la traga tan luego como la tiene á mano.
5En aquel día Jehová de los ejércitos será por corona de gloria y diadema de hermosura á las reliquias de su pueblo;
6Y por espíritu de juicio al que se sentare en juicio, y por fortaleza á los que harán tornar la batalla hasta la puerta.
7Mas también éstos erraron con el vino, y con la sidra se entontecieron; el sacerdote y el profeta erraron con la sidra, fueron trastornados del vino, aturdiéronse con la sidra, erraron en la visión, tropezaron en el juicio.
8Porque todas las mesas están llenas de vómito y suciedad, hasta no haber lugar limpio.
9¿A quién se enseñará ciencia, ó á quién se hará entender doctrina? ¿A los quitados de la leche? ¿á los arrancados de los pechos?
10Porque mandamiento tras mandamiento, mandato sobre mandato, renglón tras renglón, línea sobre línea, un poquito allí, otro poquito allá:
11Porque en lengua de tartamudos, y en extraña lengua hablará á este pueblo,
12A los cuales él dijo: Este es el reposo: dad reposo al cansado; y éste es el refrigerio: mas no quisieron oir.
13La palabra pues de Jehová les será mandamiento tras mandamiento, mandato sobre mandato, renglón tras renglón, línea sobre línea, un poquito allí, otro poquito allá; que vayan y caigan de espaldas, y sean quebrantados, y enlazados, y presos.
14Por tanto, varones burladores, que estáis enseñoreados sobre este pueblo que está en Jerusalem, oid la palabra de Jehová.
15Porque habéis dicho: Concierto tenemos hecho con la muerte, é hicimos acuerdo con la sepultura; cuando pasare el turbión del azote, no llegará á nosotros, pues que hemos puesto nuestra acogida en la mentira, y en la falsedad nos esconderemos:
16Por tanto, el Señor Jehová dice así: He aquí que yo fundo en Sión una piedra, piedra de fortaleza, de esquina, de precio, de cimiento estable: el que creyere, no se apresure.
17Y ajustaré el juicio á cordel, y á nivel la justicia; y granizo barrerá la acogida de la mentira, y aguas arrollarán el escondrijo.
18Y será anulado vuestro concierto con la muerte, y vuestro acuerdo con el sepulcro no será firme: cuando pasare el turbión del azote, seréis de él hollados.
19Luego que comenzare á pasar, él os arrebatará; porque de mañana de mañana pasará, de día y de noche; y será que el espanto solamente haga entender lo oído.
20Porque la cama es tan angosta que no basta, y la cubierta estrecha para recoger.
21Porque Jehová se levantará como en el monte Perasim, como en el valle de Gabaón se enojará; para hacer su obra, su extraña obra, y para hacer su operación, su extraña operación.
22Ahora pues, no os burléis, porque no se aprieten más vuestras ataduras: porque consumación y acabamiento sobre toda la tierra he oído del Señor Jehová de los ejércitos.
23Estad atentos, y oid mi voz; estad atentos, y oid mi dicho.
24El que ara para sembrar, ¿arará todo el día; romperá y quebrará los terrones de la tierra?
25Después que hubiere igualado su superficie, ¿no derramará la neguilla, sembrará el comino, pondrá el trigo por su orden, y la cebada en su señal, y la avena en su término?
26Porque su Dios le instruye, y le enseña á juicio;
27Que la neguilla no se trillará con trillo, ni sobre el comino rodará rueda de carreta; sino que con un palo se sacude la neguilla, y el comino con una vara.
28El pan se trilla; mas no siempre lo trillará, ni lo comprimirá con la rueda de su carreta, ni lo quebrantará con los dientes de su trillo.
29También esto salió de Jehová de los ejércitos, para hacer maravilloso el consejo y engrandecer la sabiduría.

1Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!
2Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.
3The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:
4And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.
5In that day shall the LORD of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people,
6And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate.
7But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
8For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.
9Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
10For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
11For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
12To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
13But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
14Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:
16Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
17Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.
18And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
19From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.
20For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.
21For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.
22Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.
23Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.
24Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground?
25When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place?
26For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.
27For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.
28Bread corn is bruised; because he will not ever be threshing it, nor break it with the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen.
29This also cometh forth from the LORD of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.
World English Bible
1Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley of those who are overcome with wine!
2Behold, the Lord has one who is mighty and strong. Like a storm of hail, a destroying storm, and like a storm of mighty waters overflowing, he will cast them down to the earth with his hand.
3The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim will be trodden under foot.
4The fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley, shall be like the first-ripe fig before the summer, which someone picks and eats as soon as he sees it.
5In that day, the LORD of Armies will become a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty to the residue of his people,
6and a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, and strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.
7They also reel with wine, and stagger with strong drink. The priest and the prophet reel with strong drink. They are swallowed up by wine. They stagger with strong drink. They err in vision. They stumble in judgment.
8For all tables are completely full of filthy vomit and filthiness.
9Whom will he teach knowledge? To whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts?

14Therefore hear the LORD’s word, you scoffers, that rule this people in Jerusalem:

16Therefore the Lord GOD says, “Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone of a sure foundation. He who believes shall not act hastily.
17I will make justice the measuring line, and righteousness the plumb line. The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters will overflow the hiding place.
18Your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol shall not stand. When the overflowing scourge passes through, then you will be trampled down by it.
19As often as it passes through, it will seize you; for morning by morning it will pass through, by day and by night; and it will be nothing but terror to understand the message.”
20For the bed is too short to stretch out on, and the blanket is too narrow to wrap oneself in.
21For the LORD will rise up as on Mount Perazim. He will be angry as in the valley of Gibeon; that he may do his work, his unusual work, and bring to pass his act, his extraordinary act.
22Now therefore don’t be scoffers, lest your bonds be made strong; for I have heard a decree of destruction from the Lord, GOD of Armies, on the whole earth.
23Give ear, and hear my voice! Listen, and hear my speech!
24Does he who plows to sow plow continually? Does he keep turning the soil and breaking the clods?
25When he has leveled its surface, doesn’t he plant the dill, and scatter the cumin seed, and put in the wheat in rows, the barley in the appointed place, and the spelt in its place?
26For his God instructs him in right judgment and teaches him.
27For the dill isn’t threshed with a sharp instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned over the cumin; but the dill is beaten out with a stick, and the cumin with a rod.
28Bread flour must be ground; so he will not always be threshing it. Although he drives the wheel of his threshing cart over it, his horses don’t grind it.
29This also comes out from the LORD of Armies, who is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom.
