1Que é a fé? A fé é a certeza de que o que nós esperamos está nos aguardando e a prova de que existem coisas que não podemos ver adiante de nós.
2Pessoas, em tempos passados, deram bom testemunho da sua fé.
3Pela fé entendemos que o mundo foi formado pela ordem de Deus; e que aquilo que se vê não foi feito daquilo que se vê!
4Foi pela fé que Abel apresentou um sacrifício superior ao de Caim. Deus aceitou Abel e deu prova disso aceitando a sua dádiva; e, embora Abel esteja morto há muito tempo, por meio da fé ainda fala.
5Pela fé Enoque foi levado por Deus para o céu sem ele morrer; subitamente ele desapareceu, porque Deus o levou. Porque, antes que isso acontecesse, Deus tinha dito como ele se havia agradado de Enoque.
6Sem fé é impossível agradar a Deus. Qualquer um que quer se aproximar de Deus deve crer que ele existe, e que recompensará aqueles que sinceramente o procuram.
7Pela fé Noé, quando ouviu o aviso de Deus acerca das coisas que ainda iriam acontecer e que ainda não podiam ser vistas, obedeceu a Deus, e, sem perder tempo, construiu a arca e salvou a sua família. Pela fé Noé condenou o mundo e pela fé tornou-se herdeiro da justiça.
8Pela fé Abraão, quando Deus lhe disse que deixasse a sua pátria e fosse para uma outra terra que ele prometera dar-lhe como herança, obedeceu. Ele foi, sem ao menos saber para onde estava indo.
9Pela fé, mesmo depois que chegou à terra prometida por Deus, ele morou em tendas como um estranho, como fizeram Isaque e Jacó, a quem Deus fez a mesma promessa.
10Abraão fez isso porque estava esperando que Deus o levaria àquela cidade celestial que tem alicerces, cujo arquiteto e construtor é Deus.
11Pela fé Abraão se tornou pai, embora fosse de idade avançada, e pela fé Sara pôde tornar-se mãe, apesar da sua idade avançada, pois ela compreendeu que Deus, que lhe fez a sua promessa, sem nenhuma dúvida faria o que disse.
12E, assim, uma nação inteira veio de Abraão, que era velho demais para ter filhos; uma nação tão numerosa como as estrelas do céu e incontáveis como a areia da praia do mar.
13Todos estes viveram pela fé e morreram sem jamais terem recebido tudo quanto Deus lhes prometeu; mas viram tudo que os esperava adiante, e ficaram contentes, pois concordavam que esta terra não era a sua verdadeira pátria, mas que eles eram apenas estrangeiros e forasteiros nesta terra.
14E muito logicamente, quando eles falavam assim, estavam com os olhos fixos na sua verdadeira pátria no céu.
15Se eles tivessem desejado voltar para a terra de onde tinham saído, poderiam ter voltado.
16Mas não quiseram. Eles estavam esperando por uma pátria melhor. E agora Deus não se envergonha de ser chamado o Deus deles, pois preparou uma cidade para eles.
17Pela fé Abraão, quando Deus o pôs à prova, ofereceu seu filho Isaque. Ele cria nas promessas recebidas e estava pronto para sacrificar o seu único filho;
18por meio de quem Deus havia prometido: “Por meio de Isaque é que você terá descendentes”.
19Abraão creu que se Isaque morresse Deus o ressuscitaria; e, por assim dizer, Abraão recebeu da morte o seu filho Isaque!
20Foi pela fé que Isaque soube que Deus daria bênçãos futuras aos seus dois filhos, Jacó e Esaú.
21Pela fé Jacó, quando já estava velho e para morrer, abençoou cada um dos dois filhos de José e adorou a Deus, e, apoiado sobre a ponta do bordão, orou.
22Pela fé José, ao se aproximar do fim da vida, falou com toda a confiança sobre Deus levar o povo de Israel para fora do Egito e deu ordens acerca do que deveria acontecer com os seus ossos.
23Pela fé Moisés, quando nasceu, foi escondido por seus pais. Quando viram que Deus lhes tinha dado uma criança fora do comum, esconderam-na por três meses e não tiveram medo do decreto do rei.
24Pela fé Moisés, quando cresceu, recusou ser tratado como filho da filha do faraó,
25e escolheu partilhar os maus-tratos do povo de Deus, em vez de desfrutar os prazeres passageiros do pecado.
26Ele achou que era melhor sofrer pelo Cristo prometido do que possuir todos os tesouros do Egito, pois aguardava ansiosamente a grande recompensa que Deus lhe daria.
27Pela fé saiu do Egito e não teve medo da ira do rei. Assim Moisés prosseguiu seu caminho e perseverou, porque via aquilo que é invisível.
28Pela fé celebrou a Páscoa, ordenando que matassem um cordeiro, como Deus lhes dissera que fizessem, e salpicassem o sangue sobre os umbrais das portas de suas casas, a fim de que o Anjo da Morte não tocasse no filho mais velho dos israelitas.
29Pela fé o povo atravessou o mar Vermelho, como se estivesse passando em terra seca. Mas, quando os egípcios procuraram fazer o mesmo, morreram afogados.
30Pela fé caíram as muralhas de Jericó, depois que o povo de Israel tinha andado ao redor delas durante sete dias.
31Pela fé Raabe, a prostituta, não morreu com todos os outros da sua cidade quando eles se recusaram a obedecer a Deus, pois ela deu uma acolhida amigável aos espiões.
32Bem, quanto mais eu preciso dizer? Tomaria muito tempo para narrar as histórias da fé demonstrada por Gideão, Baraque, Sansão, Jefté, Davi, Samuel e os profetas.
33Todas essas pessoas, pela fé, ganharam batalhas, conquistaram reinos, governaram com justiça o seu próprio povo e receberam o que Deus lhes prometera; fecharam a boca de leões,
34apagaram o poder do fogo e escaparam de morrer à espada. Alguns tornaram-se fortes novamente e receberam grande força na batalha; fizeram exércitos inteiros recuar e fugir.
35E algumas mulheres, por meio da fé, receberam de volta seus queridos já mortos. Mas outros confiaram em Deus e foram espancados até a morte, preferindo morrer em lugar de abandonarem a Deus para ficar livres — confiando que, depois disso, eles alcançariam uma ressurreição superior.
36Alguns foram escarnecidos, e suas costas foram dilaceradas com chicotes, e outros foram acorrentados em prisões.
37Alguns morreram apedrejados e outros serrados ao meio; a outros foi prometida a liberdade se renegassem a fé; outros foram mortos à espada. Alguns andaram de um lado para o outro em peles de ovelhas e de bodes, vagando pelos desertos e montanhas. Passaram fome, ficaram doentes e foram maltratados.
38O mundo não era digno deles. Vagaram pelos desertos e montes, vivendo em cavernas e em buracos na terra.
39Todos estes, embora tivessem fé, receberam a aprovação de Deus; no entanto, nenhum deles recebeu o que Deus lhes havia prometido.
40Deus tinha preparado um plano melhor para nós, a fim de que, somente conosco, eles fossem aperfeiçoados.

1ES pues la fe la sustancia de las cosas que se esperan, la demostración de las cosas que no se ven.
2Porque por ella alcanzaron testimonio los antiguos.
3Por la fe entendemos haber sido compuestos los siglos por la palabra de Dios, siendo hecho lo que se ve, de lo que no se veía.
4Por la fe Abel ofreció á Dios mayor sacrificio que Caín, por la cual alcanzó testimonio de que era justo, dando Dios testimonio á sus presentes; y difunto, aun habla por ella.
5Por la fe Enoc fué traspuesto para no ver muerte, y no fué hallado, porque lo traspuso Dios. Y antes que fuese traspuesto, tuvo testimonio de haber agradado á Dios.
6Empero sin fe es imposible agradar á Dios; porque es menester que el que á Dios se allega, crea que le hay, y que es galardonador de los que le buscan.
7Por la fe Noé, habiendo recibido respuesta de cosas que aun no se veían, con temor aparejó el arca en que su casa se salvase: por la cual fe condenó al mundo, y fué hecho heredero de la justicia que es por la fe.
8Por la fe Abraham, siendo llamado, obedeció para salir al lugar que había de recibir por heredad; y salió sin saber dónde iba.
9Por fe habitó en la tierra prometida como en tierra ajena, morando en cabañas con Isaac y Jacob, herederos juntamente de la misma promesa:
10Porque esperaba ciudad con fundamentos, el artífice y hacedor de la cual es Dios.
11Por la fe también la misma Sara, siendo estéril, recibió fuerza para concebir simiente; y parió aun fuera del tiempo de la edad, porque creyó ser fiel el que lo había prometido.
12Por lo cual también, de uno, y ése ya amortecido, salieron como las estrellas del cielo en multitud, y como la arena innumerable que está á la orilla de la mar.
13Conforme á la fe murieron todos éstos sin haber recibido las promesas, sino mirándolas de lejos, y creyéndolas, y saludándolas, y confesando que eran peregrinos y advenedizos sobre la tierra.
14Porque los que esto dicen, claramente dan á entender que buscan una patria.
15Que si se acordaran de aquella de donde salieron, cierto tenían tiempo para volverse:
16Empero deseaban la mejor, es á saber, la celestial; por lo cual Dios no se avergüenza de llamarse Dios de ellos: porque les había aparejado ciudad.
17Por fe ofreció Abraham á Isaac cuando fué probado, y ofrecía al unigénito el que había recibido las promesas,
18Habiéndole sido dicho: En Isaac te será llamada simiente:
19Pensando que aun de los muertos es Dios poderoso para levantar; de donde también le volvió á recibir por figura.
20Por fe bendijo Isaac á Jacob y á Esaú respecto á cosas que habían de ser.
21Por fe Jacob, muriéndose, bendijo á cada uno de los hijos de José, y adoró estribando sobre la punta de su bordón.
22Por fe José, muriéndose, se acordó de la partida de los hijos de Israel; y dió mandamiento acerca de sus huesos.
23Por fe Moisés, nacido, fué escondido de sus padres por tres meses, porque le vieron hermoso niño; y no temieron el mandamiento del rey.
24Por fe Moisés, hecho ya grande, rehusó ser llamado hijo de la hija de Faraón;
25Escogiendo antes ser afligido con el pueblo de Dios, que gozar de comodidades temporales de pecado.
26Teniendo por mayores riquezas el vituperio de Cristo que los tesoros de los Egipcios; porque miraba á la remuneración.
27Por fe dejó á Egipto, no temiendo la ira del rey; porque se sostuvo como viendo al Invisible.
28Por fe celebró la pascua y el derramamiento de la sangre, para que el que mataba los primogénitos no los tocase.
29Por fe pasaron el mar Bermejo como por tierra seca: lo cual probando los Egipcios, fueron sumergidos.
30Por fe cayeron los muros de Jericó con rodearlos siete días.
31Por fe Rahab la ramera no pereció juntamente con los incrédulos, habiendo recibido á los espías con paz.
32¿Y qué más digo? porque el tiempo me faltará contando de Gedeón, de Barac, de Samsón, de Jephté, de David, de Samuel, y de los profetas:
33Que por fe ganaron reinos, obraron justicia, alcanzaron promesas, taparon las bocas de leones,
34Apagaron fuegos impetuosos, evitaron filo de cuchillo, convalecieron de enfermedades, fueron hechos fuertes en batallas, trastornaron campos de extraños.
35Las mujeres recibieron sus muertos por resurrección; unos fueron estirados, no aceptando el rescate, para ganar mejor resurrección;
36Otros experimentaron vituperios y azotes; y á más de esto prisiones y cárceles;
37Fueron apedreados, aserrados, tentados, muertos á cuchillo; anduvieron de acá para allá cubiertos de pieles de ovejas y de cabras, pobres, angustiados, maltratados;
38De los cuales el mundo no era digno; perdidos por los desiertos, por los montes, por las cuevas y por las cavernas de la tierra.
39Y todos éstos, aprobados por testimonio de la fe, no recibieron la promesa;
40Proveyendo Dios alguna cosa mejor para nosotros, para que no fuesen perfeccionados sin nosotros.

1Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
2For by it the elders obtained a good report.
3Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
4By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
5By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.
6But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
7By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
8By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
10For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
12Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.
13These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
14For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.
15And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.
16But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
17By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
18Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
19Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
20By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
21By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
22By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.
23By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.
24By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter;
25Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
26Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward.
27By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.
28Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
29By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.
30By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.
31By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.
32And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:
33Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,
34Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.
35Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:
36And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:
37They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;
38(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
39And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise:
40God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

1Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, proof of things not seen.
2For by this, the elders obtained approval.
3By faith we understand that the universe has been framed by the word of God, so that what is seen has not been made out of things which are visible.
4By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he had testimony given to him that he was righteous, God testifying with respect to his gifts; and through it he, being dead, still speaks.
5By faith Enoch was taken away, so that he wouldn’t see death, and he was not found, because God translated him. For he has had testimony given to him that before his translation he had been well pleasing to God.

36Others were tried by mocking and scourging, yes, moreover by bonds and imprisonment.
37They were stoned. They were sawn apart. They were tempted. They were slain with the sword. They went around in sheep skins and in goat skins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated—
38of whom the world was not worthy—wandering in deserts, mountains, caves, and the holes of the earth.
39These all, having been commended for their faith, didn’t receive the promise,
40God having provided some better thing concerning us, so that apart from us they should not be made perfect.
