1Da fiel Joseph auf seines Vaters Angesicht und weinte über ihm und küßte ihn.
2Darnach befahl Joseph den Ärzten, die ihm dienten, daß sie seinen Vater einbalsamierten; und die Ärzte balsamierten Israel ein.
3Und sie verwendeten darauf volle vierzig Tage; denn so lange dauert die Einbalsamierung; aber beweint haben ihn die Ägypter siebzig Tage lang.
4Als aber die Tage der Trauer um ihn vorüber waren, redete Joseph mit dem Hause des Pharao und sprach: Habe ich Gnade gefunden in euren Augen, so redet doch vor Pharaos Ohren und sprechet:
5Mein Vater hat einen Eid von mir genommen und zu mir gesagt: Siehe, ich sterbe; begrabe mich in meinem Grab, das ich mir im Lande Kanaan angelegt habe! So laß mich nun hinaufziehen, daß ich meinen Vater begrabe und darnach wiederkomme.
6Der Pharao sprach: Zieh hinauf und begrabe deinen Vater, wie er dich hat schwören lassen!
7Da zog Joseph hinauf, seinen Vater zu begraben; und es zogen mit ihm hinauf alle Knechte des Pharao, alle Ältesten seines Hauses und alle Ältesten des Landes Ägypten;
8dazu das ganze Haus Josephs und seine Brüder und seines Vaters Haus; nur ihre Kinder, Schafe und Rinder ließen sie im Lande Gosen zurück.
9Es begleiteten ihn auch Wagen und Reiter, so daß es ein großes Heer gab.
10Als sie nun zur Tenne Atad kamen, welche jenseits des Jordan liegt, hielten sie daselbst eine große und feierliche Totenklage; denn er veranstaltete für seinen Vater eine siebentägige Trauer.
11Als aber die Bewohner des Landes, die Kanaaniter, die Trauer bei der Tenne Atad sahen, sprachen sie: Die Ägypter halten da eine große Klage! Daher wurde der Ort, welcher jenseits des Jordan liegt, «der Ägypter Klage» genannt.
12Seine Söhne aber machten es so, wie er ihnen befohlen hatte:
13sie führten ihn ins Land Kanaan und begruben ihn in der Höhle des Ackers Machpelah, weil Abraham den Acker zum Erbbegräbnis gekauft hatte von Ephron, dem Hetiter, gegenüber von Mamre.
14Joseph aber kehrte nach dem Begräbnis seines Vaters wieder nach Ägypten zurück, er und seine Brüder und alle, die mit ihm hinaufgezogen waren, seinen Vater zu begraben.
15Als nun Josephs Brüder sahen, daß ihr Vater gestorben war, sprachen sie: Joseph könnte uns angreifen und uns all die Bosheit vergelten, die wir an ihm verübt haben!
16Darum ließen sie Joseph sagen: Dein Vater befahl vor seinem Tode und sprach:
17Also sollt ihr zu Joseph sagen: Bitte, vergib doch deinen Brüdern die Missetat und ihre Sünde, daß sie so übel an dir getan! So vergib nun den Dienern des Gottes deines Vaters ihre Missetat! Aber Joseph weinte, als sie ihm das sagen ließen.
18Da gingen seine Brüder selbst hin und fielen vor ihm nieder und sprachen: Siehe, wir sind deine Knechte!
19Aber Joseph sprach zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht! Bin ich denn an Gottes Statt?
20Ihr gedachtet zwar Böses wider mich; aber Gott gedachte es gut zu machen, daß er täte, wie es jetzt am Tage ist, um viel Volk am Leben zu erhalten.
21So fürchtet euch nun nicht; ich will euch und eure Kinder versorgen! Und er tröstete sie und redete freundlich mit ihnen.
22Und Joseph blieb in Ägypten, er und seines Vaters Haus; und Joseph lebte hundertundzehn Jahre.
23Und Joseph sah Ephraims Kinder bis in das dritte Glied; auch die Kinder Machirs, des Sohnes Manasses, saßen noch auf seinen Knien.
24Und Joseph sprach zu seinen Brüdern: Ich sterbe; aber Gott wird euch gewiß heimsuchen und aus diesem Lande hinaufführen in das Land, das er Abraham, Isaak und Jakob geschworen hat.
25Und er nahm einen Eid von den Kindern Israels und sprach: Wenn Gott euch heimsuchen wird, so sollt ihr meine Gebeine von hier hinaufbringen!
26Und Joseph starb, hundertundzehn Jahre alt; und man balsamierte ihn ein und legte ihn in einen Sarg in Ägyptenland.

1ENTONCES se echó José sobre el rostro de su padre, y lloró sobre él, y besólo.
2Y mandó José á sus médicos familiares que embalsamasen á su padre: y los médicos embalsamaron á Israel.
3Y cumpliéronle cuarenta días, porque así cumplían los días de los embalsamados, y lloráronlo los Egipcios setenta días.
4Y pasados los días de su luto, habló José á los de la casa de Faraón, diciendo: Si he hallado ahora gracia en vuestros ojos, os ruego que habléis en oídos de Faraón, diciendo:
5Mi padre me conjuró diciendo: He aquí yo muero; en mi sepulcro que yo cavé para mí en la tierra de Canaán, allí me sepultarás; ruego pues que vaya yo ahora, y sepultaré á mi padre, y volveré.
6Y Faraón dijo: Ve, y sepulta á tu padre, como él te conjuró.
7Entonces José subió á sepultar á su padre; y subieron con él todos los siervos de Faraón, los ancianos de su casa, y todos los ancianos de la tierra de Egipto,
8Y toda la casa de José, y sus hermanos, y la casa de su padre: solamente dejaron en la tierra de Gosén sus niños, y sus ovejas y sus vacas.
9Y subieron también con él carros y gente de á caballo, é hízose un escuadrón muy grande.
10Y llegaron hasta la era de Atad, que está á la otra parte del Jordán, y endecharon allí con grande y muy grave lamentación: y José hizo á su padre duelo por siete días.
11Y viendo los moradores de la tierra, los Cananeos, el llanto en la era de Atad, dijeron: Llanto grande es este de los Egipcios: por eso fué llamado su nombre Abelmizraim, que está á la otra parte del Jordán.
12Hicieron, pues, sus hijos con él, según les había mandado:
13Pues lleváronlo sus hijos á la tierra de Canaán, y le sepultaron en la cueva del campo de Macpela, la que había comprado Abraham con el mismo campo, para heredad de sepultura, de Ephrón el Hetheo, delante de Mamre.
14Y tornóse José á Egipto, él y sus hermanos, y todos los que subieron con él á sepultar á su padre, después que le hubo sepultado.
15Y viendo los hermanos de José que su padre era muerto, dijeron: Quizá nos aborrecerá José, y nos dará el pago de todo el mal que le hicimos.
16Y enviaron á decir á José: Tu padre mandó antes de su muerte, diciendo:
17Así diréis á José: Ruégote que perdones ahora la maldad de tus hermanos y su pecado, porque mal te trataron: por tanto ahora te rogamos que perdones la maldad de los siervos del Dios de tu padre. Y José lloró mientras hablaban.
18Y vinieron también sus hermanos, y postráronse delante de él, y dijeron: Henos aquí por tus siervos.
19Y respondióles José: No temáis: ¿estoy yo en lugar de Dios?
20Vosotros pensasteis mal sobre mí, mas Dios lo encaminó á bien, para hacer lo que vemos hoy, para mantener en vida á mucho pueblo.
21Ahora, pues, no tengáis miedo; yo os sustentaré á vosotros y á vuestros hijos. Así los consoló, y les habló al corazón.
22Y estuvo José en Egipto, él y la casa de su padre: y vivió José ciento diez años.
23Y vió José los hijos de Ephraim hasta la tercera generación: también los hijos de Machîr, hijo de Manasés, fueron criados sobre las rodillas de José.
24Y José dijo á sus hermanos: Yo me muero; mas Dios ciertamente os visitará, y os hará subir de aquesta tierra á la tierra que juró á Abraham, á Isaac, y á Jacob.
25Y conjuró José á los hijos de Israel, diciendo: Dios ciertamente os visitará, y haréis llevar de aquí mis huesos.
26Y murió José de edad de ciento diez años; y embalsamáronlo, y fué puesto en un ataúd en Egipto.

1And Joseph fell upon his father’s face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.
2And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.
3And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.
4And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
5My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.
6And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.
7And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,
8And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father’s house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.
9And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.
10And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.
11And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abel-mizraim, which is beyond Jordan.
12And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:
13For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.
14And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.
15And when Joseph’s brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.
16And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,
17So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.
18And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.
19And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?
20But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.
21Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.
22And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father’s house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.
23And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph’s knees.
24And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.
25And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.
26So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
World English Bible
1Joseph fell on his father’s face, wept on him, and kissed him.
2Joseph commanded his servants, the physicians, to embalm his father; and the physicians embalmed Israel.
3Forty days were used for him, for that is how many days it takes to embalm. The Egyptians wept for Israel for seventy days.
4When the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh’s staff, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,
5‘My father made me swear, saying, “Behold, I am dying. Bury me in my grave which I have dug for myself in the land of Canaan.” Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father, and I will come again.’”
6Pharaoh said, “Go up, and bury your father, just like he made you swear.”
7Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, all the elders of the land of Egypt,
8all the house of Joseph, his brothers, and his father’s house. Only their little ones, their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.
9Both chariots and horsemen went up with him. It was a very great company.

16They sent a message to Joseph, saying, “Your father commanded before he died, saying,
17‘You shall tell Joseph, “Now please forgive the disobedience of your brothers, and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ Now, please forgive the disobedience of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
18His brothers also went and fell down before his face; and they said, “Behold, we are your servants.”
19Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for am I in the place of God?
20As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to save many people alive, as is happening today.
21Now therefore don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your little ones.” He comforted them, and spoke kindly to them.
22Joseph lived in Egypt, he, and his father’s house. Joseph lived one hundred ten years.
23Joseph saw Ephraim’s children to the third generation. The children also of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph’s knees.
24Joseph said to his brothers, “I am dying, but God will surely visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.”
25Joseph took an oath from the children of Israel, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here.”
26So Joseph died, being one hundred ten years old, and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
