Und die Hungersnot war schwer im Lande.

Y EL hambre era grande en la tierra.

And the famine was sore in the land.

The famine was severe in the land.

Und es geschah, als sie das Getreide, das sie aus Ägypten gebracht, aufgezehrt hatten, da sprach ihr Vater zu ihnen: Gehet zurück und kaufet uns ein wenig zu essen.

Y aconteció que como acabaron de comer el trigo que trajeron de Egipto, díjoles su padre: Volved, y comprad para nosotros un poco de alimento.

And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.

When they had eaten up the grain which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little more food.”

Und Judah sprach zu ihm und sagte: Der Mann hat uns höchlich bezeugt und gesagt: Ihr sollt mein Angesicht nicht sehen, wofern nicht euer Bruder mit euch ist.

Y respondió Judá, diciendo: Aquel varón nos protestó con ánimo resuelto, diciendo: No veréis mi rostro sin vuestro hermano con vosotros.

And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

Judah spoke to him, saying, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’

Ist es nun, daß du unseren Bruder mit uns sendest, so wollen wir hinabgehen und dir Speise kaufen.

Si enviares á nuestro hermano con nosotros, descenderemos y te compraremos alimento:

If thou wilt send our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food:

If you’ll send our brother with us, we’ll go down and buy you food;

Sendest du ihn aber nicht, so gehen wir nicht hinab; denn der Mann hat uns gesagt: Ihr sollt mein Angesicht nicht sehen, es sei den euer Bruder mit euch.

Pero si no le enviares, no descenderemos: porque aquel varón nos dijo: No veréis mi rostro sin vuestro hermano con vosotros.

But if thou wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.

but if you don’t send him, we won’t go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’”

Und Israel sprach: Warum habt ihr so übel an mir getan, daß ihr dem Manne ansagtet, ihr hättet noch einen Bruder?

Y dijo Israel: ¿Por qué me hicisteis tanto mal, declarando al varón que teníais más hermano?

And Israel said, Wherefore dealt ye so ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?

Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly, telling the man that you had another brother?”

Und sie sprachen: Der Mann hat uns über uns und unsre Geburt gefragt und gesagt: Lebt euer Vater noch? Habt ihr einen Bruder? Und wir sagten ihm an, gemäß diesen Worten. Konnten wir irgendwie wissen, daß er sagen würde: Bringet euren Bruder herab?

Y ellos respondieron: Aquel varón nos preguntó expresamente por nosotros, y por nuestra parentela, diciendo: ¿Vive aún vuestro padre? ¿tenéis otro hermano? y declarámosle conforme á estas palabras. ¿Podíamos nosotros saber que había de decir: Haced venir á vuestro hermano?

And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?

They said, “The man asked directly concerning ourselves, and concerning our relatives, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Have you another brother?’ We just answered his questions. Is there any way we could know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?”

Und Judah sprach zu Israel, seinem Vater: Sende den Jungen mit mir, und wir machen uns auf und gehen, daß wir leben und nicht sterben, beides, wir und du und unsre Kindlein.

Entonces Judá dijo á Israel su padre: Envía al mozo conmigo, y nos levantaremos é iremos, á fin que vivamos y no muramos nosotros, y tú, y nuestros niños.

And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.

Judah said to Israel, his father, “Send the boy with me, and we’ll get up and go, so that we may live, and not die, both we, and you, and also our little ones.

Ich verbürge mich für ihn, von meiner Hand sollst du ihn fordern. Wenn ich ihn nicht zu dir herbringe und dir ihn vor das Angesicht stelle, so will ich alle Tage an dir gesündigt haben.

Yo lo fío; á mí me pedirás cuenta de él: si yo no te lo volviere y lo pusiere delante de ti, seré para ti el culpante todos los días:

I will be surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever:

I’ll be collateral for him. From my hand will you require him. If I don’t bring him to you, and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever;

Denn hätten wir nicht gezaudert, schon diese zweimal wären wir zurückgekehrt.

Que si no nos hubiéramos detenido, cierto ahora hubiéramos ya vuelto dos veces.

For except we had lingered, surely now we had returned this second time.

for if we hadn’t delayed, surely we would have returned a second time by now.”

Und Israel, ihr Vater, sprach zu ihnen: Wenn dem nun so ist, so tut es, nehmet von dem Gepriesenen des Landes in eure Gefäße, und bringt dem Manne ein Geschenk hinab, ein wenig Balsam und ein wenig Honig und Harz und Stakte, Terebinthennüsse und Mandeln.

Entonces Israel su padre les respondió: Pues que así es, hacedlo; tomad de lo mejor de la tierra en vuestros vasos, y llevad á aquel varón un presente, un poco de bálsamo, y un poco de miel, aromas y mirra, nueces y almendras.

And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds:

Their father, Israel, said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Take from the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry down a present for the man, a little balm, a little honey, spices and myrrh, nuts, and almonds;

Und an Silber nehmet das Doppelte in eure Hand, und das Silber, das in die Öffnung eurer Mantelsäcke zurückgegeben wurde, bringt zurück in eurer Hand, vielleicht ist es ein Versehen.

Y tomad en vuestras manos doblado dinero, y llevad en vuestra mano el dinero vuelto en las bocas de vuestros costales; quizá fué yerro.

And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an oversight:

and take double money in your hand, and take back the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight.

Und euren Bruder nehmet, und macht euch auf und kehrt zu dem Manne zurück.

Tomad también á vuestro hermano, y levantaos, y volved á aquel varón.

Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:

Take your brother also, get up, and return to the man.

Und Gott Schaddai gebe euch Erbarmungen vor dem Manne, daß er euch entlasse euern andern Bruder und Benjamin; und ich, sei ich denn kinderlos, wie ich kinderlos sein soll!

Y el Dios Omnipotente os dé misericordias delante de aquel varón, y os suelte al otro vuestro hermano, y á este Benjamín. Y si he de ser privado de mis hijos, séalo.

And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

May God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may release to you your other brother and Benjamin. If I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.”

Und die Männer nahmen dieses Geschenk und das Doppelte des Silbers nahmen sie in ihre Hand, und Benjamin, und sie machten sich auf und gingen hinab nach Ägypten und standen vor Joseph.

Entonces tomaron aquellos varones el presente, y tomaron en su mano doblado dinero, y á Benjamín; y se levantaron, y descendieron á Egipto, y presentáronse delante de José.

And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.

Und Joseph sah Benjamin mit ihnen und sprach zu dem, der über sein Haus war: Bringe die Männer herein ins Haus und schlachte und bereite; denn die Männer sollen mit mir essen am Mittag.

Y vió José á Benjamín con ellos, y dijo al mayordomo de su casa: Mete en casa á esos hombres, y degüella víctima, y aderézala; porque estos hombres comerán conmigo al medio día.

And when Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the ruler of his house, Bring these men home, and slay, and make ready; for these men shall dine with me at noon.

When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and butcher an animal, and prepare; for the men will dine with me at noon.”

Und der Mann tat, wie Joseph sagte; und der Mann brachte die Männer herein in Josephs Haus.

E hizo el hombre como José dijo; y metió aquel hombre á los hombres en casa de José.

And the man did as Joseph bade; and the man brought the men into Joseph’s house.

The man did as Joseph commanded, and the man brought the men to Joseph’s house.

Die Männer aber fürchteten sich, daß sie in Josephs Haus hereingebracht wurden und sprachen: Wegen des Silbers, das im Anbeginn wieder in unsre Mantelsäcke zurückkam, werden wir hereingebracht, um es auf uns zu wälzen und über uns herzufallen und uns zu Knechten zu nehmen und unsere Esel.

Y aquellos hombres tuvieron temor, cuando fueron metidos en casa de José, y decían: Por el dinero que fué vuelto en nuestros costales la primera vez nos han metido aquí, para revolver contra nosotros, y dar sobre nosotros, y tomarnos por siervos á nosotros, y á nuestros asnos.

And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bondmen, and our asses.

The men were afraid, because they were brought to Joseph’s house; and they said, “Because of the money that was returned in our sacks the first time, we’re brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, attack us, and seize us as slaves, along with our donkeys.”

Und sie traten herzu zu dem Manne, der über Josephs Haus war und redeten zu ihm am Eingang des Hauses;

Y llegáronse al mayordomo de la casa de José, y le hablaron á la entrada de la casa.

And they came near to the steward of Joseph’s house, and they communed with him at the door of the house,

Und sprachen: Bitte, mein Herr, wir sind im Anbeginn herabgekommen, um Speise zu kaufen.

Y dijeron: Ay, señor mío, nosotros en realidad de verdad descendimos al principio á comprar alimentos:

And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to buy food:

and said, “Oh, my lord, we indeed came down the first time to buy food.

Und es geschah, wie wir in das Nachtlager kamen und unsre Mantelsäcke öffneten, da siehe, da war eines jeden Mannes Silber in der Öffnung seines Mantelsackes, unser Silber nach seinem Gewicht, und wir bringen es hier in unserer Hand zurück.

Y aconteció que como vinimos al mesón y abrimos nuestros costales, he aquí el dinero de cada uno estaba en la boca de su costal, nuestro dinero en su justo peso; y hémoslo vuelto en nuestras manos.

And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it again in our hand.

When we came to the lodging place, we opened our sacks, and behold, each man’s money was in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. We have brought it back in our hand.

Und anderes Silber brachten wir in unsrer Hand herab, um Speise zu kaufen. Wir wissen nicht, wer unser Silber in unsre Mantelsäcke gelegt hat.

Hemos también traído en nuestras manos otro dinero para comprar alimentos: nosotros no sabemos quién haya puesto nuestro dinero en nuestros costales.

And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.

We have brought down other money in our hand to buy food. We don’t know who put our money in our sacks.”

Und er sprach: Friede sei mit euch! Fürchtet euch nicht: Euer Gott und der Gott eures Vaters hat euch etwas Verborgenes in eure Mantelsäcke gegeben. Euer Silber ist mir zugekommen; und er brachte Simeon zu ihnen heraus.

Y él respondió: Paz á vosotros, no temáis; vuestro Dios y el Dios de vuestro padre os dió el tesoro en vuestros costales: vuestro dinero vino á mí. Y sacó á Simeón á ellos.

And he said, Peace be to you, fear not: your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your sacks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.

He said, “Peace be to you. Don’t be afraid. Your God, and the God of your father, has given you treasure in your sacks. I received your money.” He brought Simeon out to them.

Und der Mann brachte die Männer herein in Josephs Haus, und gab Wasser und sie wuschen ihre Füße, und ihren Eseln gab er Futter.

Y metió aquel varón á aquellos hombres en casa de José: y dióles agua, y lavaron sus pies: y dió de comer á sus asnos.

And the man brought the men into Joseph’s house, and gave them water, and they washed their feet; and he gave their asses provender.

Und sie machten das Geschenk bereit bis Joseph am Mittag käme, denn sie hatten gehört, daß sie das Brot da essen sollten.

Y ellos prepararon el presente entretanto que venía José al medio día, porque habían oído que allí habían de comer pan.

And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.

Und Joseph kam nach Hause und sie brachten ihm das Geschenk, das in ihrer Hand war, herein ins Haus und sie beugten sich vor ihm nieder zur Erde.

Y vino José á casa, y ellos le trajeron el presente que tenían en su mano dentro de casa, é inclináronse á él hasta tierra.

And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.

Und er fragte nach ihrem Frieden und sprach: Und hat Frieden euer alter Vater, von dem ihr gesagt? Lebt er noch?

Entonces les preguntó él cómo estaban, y dijo: ¿Vuestro padre, el anciano que dijisteis, lo pasa bien? ¿vive todavía?

And he asked them of their welfare, and said, Is your father well, the old man of whom ye spake? Is he yet alive?

Und sie sagten: Dein Knecht, unser Vater, hat Frieden. Er lebt noch. Und sie verneigten sich und beugten sich nieder.

Y ellos respondieron: Bien va á tu siervo nuestro padre; aun vive. Y se inclinaron, é hicieron reverencia.

And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed down their heads, and made obeisance.

They said, “Your servant, our father, is well. He is still alive.” They bowed down humbly.

Und er hob seine Augen auf und sah Benjamin, seinen Bruder, den Sohn seiner Mutter, und sprach: Ist dies euer kleiner Bruder, von dem ihr mir gesprochen habt? Und er sprach: Gott sei dir gnädig, mein Sohn.

Y alzando él sus ojos vió á Benjamín su hermano, hijo de su madre, y dijo: ¿Es éste vuestro hermano menor, de quien me hablasteis? Y dijo: Dios tenga misericordia de ti, hijo mío.

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be gracious unto thee, my son.

He lifted up his eyes, and saw Benjamin, his brother, his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me?” He said, “God be gracious to you, my son.”

Und Joseph eilte; denn sein Erbarmen erregte sich für seinen Bruder, und er suchte, wo er weinte; und er ging in die Kammer hinein und weinte daselbst.

Entonces José se apresuró, porque se conmovieron sus entrañas á causa de su hermano, y procuró donde llorar: y entróse en su cámara, y lloró allí.

And Joseph made haste; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he sought where to weep; and he entered into his chamber, and wept there.

Joseph hurried, for his heart yearned over his brother; and he sought a place to weep. He entered into his room, and wept there.

Und er wusch sein Gesicht und kam heraus, und hielt an sich und sprach: Setzet Brot auf.

Y lavó su rostro, y salió fuera, y reprimióse, y dijo: Poned pan.

And he washed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and said, Set on bread.

Und sie legten ihm besonders vor, und ihnen besonders, und den Ägyptern, die mit ihm aßen, besonders; denn die Ägypter können nicht Brot essen mit den Hebräern, weil dies den Ägyptern ein Greuel ist.

Y pusieron para él aparte, y separadamente para ellos, y aparte para los Egipcios que con él comían: porque los Egipcios no pueden comer pan con los Hebreos, lo cual es abominación á los Egipcios.

And they set on for him by himself, and for them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, which did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.

They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians don’t eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians.

Und sie saßen vor ihm, der Erstgeborene nach seiner Erstgeburt und der Jüngste nach seiner Jugend; und die Männer verwunderten sich, jeder Mann zu seinem Genossen.

Y sentáronse delante de él, el mayor conforme á su mayoría, y el menor conforme á su menoría; y estaban aquellos hombres atónitos mirándose el uno al otro.

And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another.

Und man hob Gerichte von seinem Angesichte weg vor sie hin, aber Benjamins Gericht war fünfmal mehr denn das Gericht von ihnen allen. Und sie tranken und wurden trunken mit ihm.

And he took and sent messes unto them from before him: but Benjamin’s mess was five times so much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.
