Cuando José fue llevado a Egipto, un egipcio llamado Potifar, que era funcionario del faraón y capitán de la guardia, se lo compró a los ismaelitas que lo habían llevado hasta allá.
Y LLEVADO José á Egipto, comprólo Potiphar, eunuco de Faraón, capitán de los de la guardia, varón Egipcio, de mano de los Ismaelitas que lo habían llevado allá.

Su amo se dio cuenta de que Yahvé estaba con José, y de que Yahvé hacía prosperar todo lo que él emprendía.

Así José se ganó la confianza de su amo y llegó a ser su sirviente personal. Potifar lo nombró administrador de su casa y dejó a su cargo todo lo que tenía.
Así halló José gracia en sus ojos, y servíale; y él le hizo mayordomo de su casa, y entregó en su poder todo lo que tenía.
And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.

Desde el momento en que lo nombró administrador de su casa y de todos sus bienes, Yahvé bendijo la casa del egipcio por causa de José. La bendición de Yahvé se extendió a todo lo que tenía, tanto en la casa como en el campo.
Y aconteció que, desde cuando le dió el encargo de su casa, y de todo lo que tenía, Jehová bendijo la casa del Egipcio á causa de José; y la bendición de Jehová fué sobre todo lo que tenía, así en casa como en el campo.

Así que Potifar dejó todo lo que tenía en manos de José, y ya no se preocupaba de nada, más que de la comida que se servía en su mesa. Además, José era muy apuesto y de buena presencia.

And he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand; and he knew not ought he had, save the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured.

Después de algún tiempo, la esposa de su amo se fijó en José y le dijo: “Acuéstate conmigo”.

And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.

Pero él se negó y le contestó a la esposa de su amo: “Mire, mi señor confía tanto en mí que no se preocupa de nada de lo que pasa en la casa, sino que ha puesto a mi cargo todo lo que tiene.
Y él no quiso, y dijo á la mujer de su señor: He aquí que mi señor no sabe conmigo lo que hay en casa, y ha puesto en mi mano todo lo que tiene:
But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;

En esta casa no hay nadie que tenga más autoridad que yo. Él no me ha negado nada, excepto a usted, porque es su esposa. ¿Cómo podría yo cometer semejante maldad y pecar contra Dios?”
No hay otro mayor que yo en esta casa, y ninguna cosa me ha reservado sino á ti, por cuanto tú eres su mujer; ¿cómo, pues, haría yo este grande mal, y pecaría contra Dios?
There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

Y aunque ella le insistía a José todos los días, él se negaba a acostarse o a estar con ella.
Y fué que hablando ella á José cada día, y no escuchándola él para acostarse al lado de ella, para estar con ella,
And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
As she spoke to Joseph day by day, he didn’t listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
Pero un día, cuando José entró en la casa para cumplir con sus deberes, y no había ningún sirviente allí adentro,
Aconteció que entró él un día en casa para hacer su oficio, y no había nadie de los de casa allí en casa:
And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the house to do his business; and there was none of the men of the house there within.

ella lo agarró de la ropa y le dijo: “¡Acuéstate conmigo!” Pero José le dejó su ropa en las manos y salió corriendo de la casa.

llamó a los sirvientes de la casa y les dijo: “¡Miren! Mi esposo nos ha traído a un hebreo para que se aproveche de nosotros. Entró a mi cuarto para acostarse conmigo, pero yo grité con todas mis fuerzas.
Llamó á los de casa, y hablóles diciendo: Mirad, nos ha traído un Hebreo, para que hiciese burla de nosotros: vino él á mí para dormir conmigo, y yo dí grandes voces;
That she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice:

Al oír que yo levantaba la voz y gritaba, dejó su ropa a mi lado y salió corriendo de la casa”.

And it came to pass, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled, and got him out.

Ella guardó la ropa de José hasta que su amo regresó a casa,

Pero cuando yo levanté la voz y grité, él dejó su ropa a mi lado y salió corriendo”.

And it came to pass, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me, and fled out.

Cuando el amo escuchó la historia de su esposa, que le decía: “Así me trató tu esclavo”, se enfureció muchísimo.

And it came to pass, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; that his wrath was kindled.

Agarró a José y lo metió en la cárcel, en el lugar donde estaban los presos del rey. Y José se quedó allí en la cárcel.

Pero Yahvé estaba con José y le mostró su bondad, haciendo que se ganara la simpatía del jefe de la cárcel.

El jefe de la cárcel puso a José a cargo de todos los presos que estaban allí, de modo que José era responsable de todo lo que se hacía en la cárcel.
Y el principal de la casa de la cárcel entregó en mano de José todos los presos que había en aquella prisión; todo lo que hacían allí, él lo hacía.
