1Und Jakob wohnte in dem Lande, in welchem sein Vater als Fremdling geweilt hatte, im Lande Kanaan.
2Dies ist die Geschichte Jakobs: Joseph, siebzehn Jahre alt, weidete die Herde mit seinen Brüdern; und er war als Knabe bei den Söhnen Bilhas und bei den Söhnen Silpas, der Weiber seines Vaters. Und Joseph hinterbrachte ihrem Vater die üble Nachrede von ihnen.
3Und Israel hatte Joseph lieber als alle seine Söhne, weil er der Sohn seines Alters war; und er machte ihm einen langen Leibrock.
4Und als seine Brüder sahen, daß ihr Vater ihn lieber hatte als alle seine Brüder, da haßten sie ihn und vermochten nicht, ihn zu grüßen.
5Und Joseph hatte einen Traum und teilte ihn seinen Brüdern mit; und sie haßten ihn noch mehr.
6Und er sprach zu ihnen: Höret doch diesen Traum, den ich gehabt habe:
7Siehe, wir banden Garben auf dem Felde, und siehe, meine Garbe richtete sich auf und blieb auch aufrecht stehen; und siehe, eure Garben kamen ringsum und verneigten sich vor meiner Garbe.
8Da sprachen seine Brüder zu ihm: Solltest du gar König über uns sein, solltest du gar über uns herrschen? Und sie haßten ihn noch mehr um seiner Träume und um seiner Worte willen.
9Und er hatte noch einen anderen Traum und erzählte ihn seinen Brüdern und sprach: Siehe, noch einen Traum habe ich gehabt, und siehe, die Sonne und der Mond und elf Sterne beugten sich vor mir nieder.
10Und er erzählte es seinem Vater und seinen Brüdern. Da schalt ihn sein Vater und sprach zu ihm: Was ist das für ein Traum, den du gehabt hast? Sollen wir gar kommen, ich und deine Mutter und deine Brüder, um uns vor dir zur Erde niederzubeugen?
11Und seine Brüder waren eifersüchtig auf ihn; aber sein Vater bewahrte das Wort.
12Und seine Brüder gingen hin, um die Herde ihres Vaters zu weiden zu Sichem.
13Und Israel sprach zu Joseph: Weiden nicht deine Brüder zu Sichem? Komm, daß ich dich zu ihnen sende! Und er sprach zu ihm: Hier bin ich.
14Und er sprach zu ihm: Gehe doch hin, sieh nach dem Wohlergehen deiner Brüder und nach dem Wohlergehen der Herde und bringe mir Antwort. Und er sandte ihn aus dem Tale von Hebron, und er kam nach Sichem.
15Und ein Mann fand ihn, und siehe, er irrte auf dem Felde umher; und der Mann fragte ihn und sprach: Was suchst du?
16Und er sprach: Ich suche meine Brüder; tue mir doch kund, wo sie weiden.
17Und der Mann sprach: Sie sind von hier aufgebrochen, denn ich hörte sie sagen: Laßt uns nach Dothan ziehen! Da ging Joseph seinen Brüdern nach und fand sie zu Dothan.
18Und sie sahen ihn von ferne; und ehe er ihnen nahte, da ersannen sie gegen ihn den Anschlag, ihn zu töten.
19Und sie sprachen einer zum anderen: Siehe, da kommt jener Träumer!
20So kommt nun und laßt uns ihn erschlagen und ihn in eine der Gruben werfen, und wir wollen sagen: Ein böses Tier hat ihn gefressen; und wir werden sehen, was aus seinen Träumen wird.
21Und Ruben hörte es und errettete ihn aus ihrer Hand und sprach: Laßt uns ihn nicht totschlagen!
22Und Ruben sprach zu ihnen: Vergießet nicht Blut; werfet ihn in diese Grube, die in der Wüste ist, und leget nicht Hand an ihn auf daß er ihn aus ihrer Hand errettete, um ihn wieder zu seinem Vater zu bringen.
23Und es geschah, als Joseph zu seinen Brüdern kam, da zogen sie Joseph seinen Leibrock aus, den langen Leibrock, den er anhatte;
24und sie nahmen ihn und warfen ihn in die Grube; die Grube aber war leer, es war kein Wasser darin.
25Und sie setzten sich, um zu essen. Und sie hoben ihre Augen auf und sahen: und siehe, ein Zug Ismaeliter kam von Gilead her; und ihre Kamele trugen Tragant und Balsamharz und Ladanum; sie zogen hin, um es nach Ägypten hinabzubringen.
26Da sprach Juda zu seinen Brüdern: Was für ein Gewinn ist es, daß wir unseren Bruder erschlagen und sein Blut verhehlen?
27Kommt, laßt uns ihn an die Ismaeliter verkaufen; aber unsere Hand sei nicht an ihm, denn unser Bruder, unser Fleisch ist er! Und seine Brüder hörten darauf.
28Als nun die midianitischen Männer, die Kaufleute, vorüberkamen, da zogen und holten sie Joseph aus der Grube herauf und verkauften Joseph an die Ismaeliter um zwanzig Silbersekel; und sie brachten Joseph nach Ägypten.
29Und als Ruben zur Grube zurückkam, und siehe, Joseph war nicht in der Grube, da zerriß er seine Kleider.
30Und er kehrte zu seinen Brüdern zurück und sprach: Der Knabe ist nicht da, und ich, wohin soll ich gehen?
31Und sie nahmen den Leibrock Josephs und schlachteten einen Ziegenbock und tauchten den Leibrock in das Blut;
32und sie schickten den langen Leibrock hin und ließen ihn ihrem Vater bringen und sagen: Dieses haben wir gefunden; erkenne doch, ob es der Leibrock deines Sohnes ist oder nicht.
33Und er erkannte ihn und sprach: Der Leibrock meines Sohnes! Ein böses Tier hat ihn gefressen, Joseph ist gewißlich zerrissen worden!
34Und Jakob zerriß seine Kleider und legte Sacktuch um seine Lenden, und er trug Leid um seinen Sohn viele Tage.
35Und alle seine Söhne und alle seine Töchter machten sich auf, um ihn zu trösten; aber er verweigerte es, sich trösten zu lassen, und sprach: Denn leidtragend werde ich zu meinem Sohne hinabfahren in den Scheol! Und sein Vater beweinte ihn.
36Und die Midianiter verkauften ihn nach Ägypten, an Potiphar, einen Kämmerer des Pharao, den Obersten der Leibwache.

1Y HABITÓ Jacob en la tierra donde peregrinó su padre, en la tierra de Canaán.
2Estas fueron las generaciones de Jacob. José, siendo de edad de diez y siete años apacentaba las ovejas con sus hermanos; y el joven estaba con los hijos de Bilha, y con los hijos de Zilpa, mujeres de su padre: y noticiaba José á su padre la mala fama de ellos.
3Y amaba Israel á José más que á todos sus hijos, porque le había tenido en su vejez: y le hizo una ropa de diversos colores.
4Y viendo sus hermanos que su padre lo amaba más que á todos sus hermanos, aborrecíanle, y no le podían hablar pacíficamente.
5Y soñó José un sueño, y contólo á sus hermanos; y ellos vinieron á aborrecerle más todavía.
6Y él les dijo: Oíd ahora este sueño que he soñado:
7He aquí que atábamos manojos en medio del campo, y he aquí que mi manojo se levantaba, y estaba derecho, y que vuestros manojos estaban alrededor, y se inclinaban al mío.
8Y respondiéronle sus hermanos: ¿Has de reinar tú sobre nosotros, ó te has de enseñorear sobre nosotros? Y le aborrecieron aún más á causa de sus sueños y de sus palabras.
9Y soñó aún otro sueño, y contólo á sus hermanos, diciendo: He aquí que he soñado otro sueño, y he aquí que el sol y la luna y once estrellas se inclinaban á mí.
10Y contólo á su padre y á sus hermanos: y su padre le reprendió, y díjole: ¿Qué sueño es este que soñaste? ¿Hemos de venir yo y tu madre, y tus hermanos, á inclinarnos á ti á tierra?
11Y sus hermanos le tenían envidia, mas su padre paraba la consideración en ello.
12Y fueron sus hermanos á apacentar las ovejas de su padre en Sichêm.
13Y dijo Israel á José: Tus hermanos apacientan las ovejas en Sichêm: ven, y te enviaré á ellos. Y él respondió: Heme aquí.
14Y él le dijo: Ve ahora, mira cómo están tus hermanos y cómo están las ovejas, y tráeme la respuesta. Y enviólo del valle de Hebrón, y llegó á Sichêm.
15Y hallólo un hombre, andando él perdido por el campo, y preguntóle aquel hombre, diciendo: ¿Qué buscas?
16Y él respondió: Busco á mis hermanos: ruégote que me muestres dónde pastan.
17Y aquel hombre respondió: Ya se han ido de aquí; y yo les oí decir: Vamos á Dothán. Entonces José fué tras de sus hermanos, y hallólos en Dothán.
18Y como ellos lo vieron de lejos, antes que cerca de ellos llegara, proyectaron contra él para matarle.
19Y dijeron el uno al otro: He aquí viene el soñador;
20Ahora pues, venid, y matémoslo y echémosle en una cisterna, y diremos: Alguna mala bestia le devoró: y veremos qué serán sus sueños.
21Y como Rubén oyó esto, librólo de sus manos, y dijo: No lo matemos.
22Y díjoles Rubén: No derraméis sangre; echadlo en esta cisterna que está en el desierto, y no pongáis mano en él; por librarlo así de sus manos, para hacerlo volver á su padre.
23Y sucedió que, cuando llegó José á sus hermanos, ellos hicieron desnudar á José su ropa, la ropa de colores que tenía sobre sí;
24Y tomáronlo, y echáronle en la cisterna; mas la cisterna estaba vacía, no había en ella agua.
25Y sentáronse á comer pan: y alzando los ojos miraron, y he aquí una compañía de Ismaelitas que venía de Galaad, y sus camellos traían aromas y bálsamo y mirra, é iban á llevarlo á Egipto.
26Entonces Judá dijo á sus hermanos: ¿Qué provecho el que matemos á nuestro hermano y encubramos su muerte?
27Venid, y vendámosle á los Ismaelitas, y no sea nuestra mano sobre él; que nuestro hermano es nuestra carne. Y sus hermanos acordaron con él.
28Y como pasaban los Midianitas mercaderes, sacaron ellos á José de la cisterna, y trajéronle arriba, y le vendieron á los Ismaelitas por veinte piezas de plata. Y llevaron á José á Egipto.
29Y Rubén volvió á la cisterna, y no halló á José dentro, y rasgó sus vestidos.
30Y tornó á sus hermanos, y dijo: El mozo no parece; y yo, ¿adónde iré yo?
31Entonces tomaron ellos la ropa de José, y degollaron un cabrito de las cabras, y tiñeron la ropa con la sangre;
32Y enviaron la ropa de colores y trajéronla á su padre, y dijeron: Esta hemos hallado, reconoce ahora si es ó no la ropa de tu hijo.
33Y él la conoció, y dijo: La ropa de mi hijo es; alguna mala bestia le devoró; José ha sido despedazado.
34Entonces Jacob rasgó sus vestidos, y puso saco sobre sus lomos, y enlutóse por su hijo muchos días.
35Y levantáronse todos sus hijos y todas sus hijas para consolarlo; mas él no quiso tomar consolación, y dijo: Porque yo tengo de descender á mi hijo enlutado hasta la sepultura. Y llorólo su padre.
36Y los Midianitas lo vendieron en Egipto á Potiphar, eunuco de Faraón, capitán de los de la guardia.

1And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.
2These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.
4And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.
5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.
6And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:
7For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.
8And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.
9And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.
10And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?
11And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.
12And his brethren went to feed their father’s flock in Shechem.
13And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.
14And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
15And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?
16And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.
17And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.
18And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.
19And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.
20Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.
21And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.
22And Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father again.
23And it came to pass, when Joseph was come unto his brethren, that they stript Joseph out of his coat, his coat of many colours that was on him;
24And they took him, and cast him into a pit: and the pit was empty, there was no water in it.
25And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.
26And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit is it if we slay our brother, and conceal his blood?
27Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.
28Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
29And Reuben returned unto the pit; and, behold, Joseph was not in the pit; and he rent his clothes.
30And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?
31And they took Joseph’s coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood;
32And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no.
33And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.
34And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
35And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.
36And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, and captain of the guard.

15A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. The man asked him, “What are you looking for?”
16He said, “I am looking for my brothers. Tell me, please, where they are feeding the flock.”
17The man said, “They have left here, for I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’” Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.
18They saw him afar off, and before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.
19They said to one another, “Behold, this dreamer comes.
20Come now therefore, and let’s kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘An evil animal has devoured him.’ We will see what will become of his dreams.”
21Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, “Let’s not take his life.”
22Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.
23When Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him;
24and they took him, and threw him into the pit. The pit was empty. There was no water in it.
25They sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels bearing spices and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.
26Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
27Come, and let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh.” His brothers listened to him.
28Midianites who were merchants passed by, and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. The merchants brought Joseph into Egypt.
29Reuben returned to the pit, and saw that Joseph wasn’t in the pit; and he tore his clothes.
30He returned to his brothers, and said, “The child is no more; and I, where will I go?”
31They took Joseph’s tunic, and killed a male goat, and dipped the tunic in the blood.
32They took the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, “We have found this. Examine it, now, and see if it is your son’s tunic or not.”
33He recognized it, and said, “It is my son’s tunic. An evil animal has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.”
34Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth on his waist, and mourned for his son many days.
35All his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. He said, “For I will go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” His father wept for him.
36The Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh’s, the captain of the guard.
