Ésta es la historia de la familia de Jacob. Cuando José tenía diecisiete años, cuidaba el rebaño junto con sus hermanos, los hijos de Bilhá y de Zilpá, las esposas de su padre. Y José le contaba a su padre lo mal que se portaban sus hermanos.
Estas fueron las generaciones de Jacob. José, siendo de edad de diez y siete años apacentaba las ovejas con sus hermanos; y el joven estaba con los hijos de Bilha, y con los hijos de Zilpa, mujeres de su padre: y noticiaba José á su padre la mala fama de ellos.

Sus hermanos le respondieron: “¿De veras crees que vas a reinar sobre nosotros y a dominarnos?” Y lo odiaron todavía más por sus sueños y por sus palabras.

Después José tuvo otro sueño, y se lo contó a sus hermanos. Les dijo: “Tuve otro sueño, en el que veía que el sol, la luna y once estrellas se inclinaban ante mí”.

And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.
Israel said to Joseph, “Aren’t your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” He said to him, “Here I am.”
Israel le dijo: “Ve a ver cómo están tus hermanos y el rebaño, y tráeme noticias”. Así que lo envió desde el valle de Hebrón, y José llegó a Siquén.
Y él le dijo: Ve ahora, mira cómo están tus hermanos y cómo están las ovejas, y tráeme la respuesta. Y enviólo del valle de Hebrón, y llegó á Sichêm.
And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
He said to him, “Go now, see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flock; and bring me word again.” So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
Mientras José andaba perdido por el campo, un hombre lo encontró y le preguntó: “¿Qué estás buscando?”

And a certain man found him, and, behold, he was wandering in the field: and the man asked him, saying, What seekest thou?

Él respondió: “Estoy buscando a mis hermanos. Por favor, dime dónde están cuidando el rebaño”.

El hombre le dijo: “Ya se fueron de aquí. Los oí decir que se iban a Dotán”. Entonces José fue a buscar a sus hermanos y los encontró en Dotán.
Y aquel hombre respondió: Ya se han ido de aquí; y yo les oí decir: Vamos á Dothán. Entonces José fué tras de sus hermanos, y hallólos en Dothán.
And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.

Ellos lo vieron de lejos, y antes de que se acercara, hicieron planes para matarlo.

And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him.

Ahora pues, venid, y matémoslo y echémosle en una cisterna, y diremos: Alguna mala bestia le devoró: y veremos qué serán sus sueños.
Come now therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.

Al oír esto, Rubén intentó salvarlo de sus manos y les dijo: “No le quitemos la vida”.

And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

Y sentáronse á comer pan: y alzando los ojos miraron, y he aquí una compañía de Ismaelitas que venía de Galaad, y sus camellos traían aromas y bálsamo y mirra, é iban á llevarlo á Egipto.
And they sat down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt.

Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

Cuando Rubén regresó al pozo y vio que José ya no estaba allí, se rasgó la ropa en señal de dolor.

Volvió a donde estaban sus hermanos y les dijo: “¡El muchacho ya no está! Y ahora, ¿qué voy a hacer?”

And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I, whither shall I go?

Mandaron la túnica de muchos colores a su padre, con este mensaje: “Encontramos esto. Fíjate bien si es la túnica de tu hijo o no”.
Y enviaron la ropa de colores y trajéronla á su padre, y dijeron: Esta hemos hallado, reconoce ahora si es ó no la ropa de tu hijo.
And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son’s coat or no.
They took the tunic of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, “We have found this. Examine it, now, and see if it is your son’s tunic or not.”
Jacob la reconoció y exclamó: “¡Es la túnica de mi hijo! Un animal salvaje se lo ha comido. ¡Seguramente José fue despedazado!”

And he knew it, and said, It is my son’s coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces.
