1Und Laban stand frühe am Morgen auf, und küßte seine Söhne und seine Töchter und segnete sie; und Laban ging und kehrte zurück an seinen Ort.
2Und Jakob ging seinen Weg und die Engel Gottes stießen auf ihn.
3Und da Jakob sie sah, sprach er: Dies ist ein Lager Gottes, und er nannte den Namen desselben Ortes Machanaim .
4Und Jakob sandte Boten vor sich her an Esau, seinen Bruder, in das Land Seir, ins Gefilde Edom;
5Und gebot ihnen und sagte: So sprecht zu meinem Herrn, zu Esau: Also spricht dein Knecht Jakob: Bei Laban habe ich mich aufgehalten und bis jetzt verweilet.
6Und ich habe Ochs und Esel, Kleinvieh, und Knechte und Dienstmägde, und ich sende es meinem Herrn, anzusagen, um Gnade in deinen Augen zu finden.
7Und die Boten kehrten zurück zu Jakob und sprachen: Wir sind zu deinem Bruder, zu Esau, gekommen, und auch er zieht dir entgegen und vierhundert Mann mit ihm.
8Und Jakob fürchtete sich sehr und er ward bedrängt; und er verteilte das Volk, das bei ihm war, und das Kleinvieh und die Rinder und die Kamele in zwei Lager.
9Und er sprach: So Esau kommt zu dem einen Lager und schlägt es, so wird das Lager, das verbleibt, entkommen.
10Und Jakob sprach: Gott meines Vaters Abraham, und Gott meines Vaters Isaak, Jehovah, Der Du zu mir gesprochen hast: Kehr in dein Land und deinen Geburtsort zurück, und Ich will dir Gutes tun.
11Ich bin zu gering all der Barmherzigkeit und all der Wahrheit, die Du an Deinem Knechte getan hast; denn mit meinem Stocke setzte ich über den Jordan da, und nun bin ich zu zwei Lagern geworden.
12Errette mich doch aus der Hand meines Bruders, aus der Hand Esaus; denn ich fürchte ihn, er möchte kommen und mich schlagen, die Mutter über den Söhnen.
13Aber Du hast gesagt: Ich will dir gewiß-lich Gutes tun und deinen Samen machen wie den Sand des Meeres, den man nicht zählt vor Menge.
14Und er übernachtete daselbst in selbiger Nacht, und nahm von dem, was in seine Hand kam, ein Geschenk für Esau, seinen Bruder,
15Zweihundert Ziegen und zwanzig Böcke, zweihundert Mutterschafe und zwanzig Widder.
16Dreißig säugende Kamele und ihre Füllen, vierzig Kühe und zehn Farren, zwanzig Eselinnen und zehn Eselsfüllen.
17Und er gab sie in die Hand seiner Knechte, jegliche Herde besonders und sprach zu seinen Knechten: Ziehet vor mir her und setzet einen Abstand zwischen Herde und zwischen Herde.
18Und er gebot dem ersten und sprach: Wenn Esau, mein Bruder, auf dich trifft und dich fragt und sagt: Wem gehörst du an, und wohin gehst du, und für wen sind die da vor dir?
19So sage: Deinem Knechte Jakob; es ist ein Geschenk, das er meinem Herrn, dem Esau, sendet, und siehe, auch er ist hinter uns.
20Und er gebot auch dem zweiten und auch dem dritten, auch allen, die hinter den Herden hergingen, und sagte: Solche Worte sollt ihr reden mit Esau, wenn ihr ihn findet.
21Und ihr sollt auch sagen: Siehe, dein Knecht Jakob ist hinter uns; denn, sagte er, ich will sein Angesicht versöhnen mit dem Geschenk, das vor mir geht; und danach will ich sein Angesicht sehen, vielleicht erhebt er mein Angesicht.
22Und das Geschenk zog vor ihm her, und er übernachtete in dem Lager dieselbige Nacht.
23Und er machte sich in jener Nacht auf, und nahm seine zwei Weiber und seine zwei Dienstmägde und seine elf Kinder, und setzte über die Furt des Jabbok.
24Und er nahm sie und ließ sie über den Bach setzen, und alles, was er hatte, ließ er übersetzen.
25Und Jakob blieb allein übrig; und es rang ein Mann mit ihm, bis die Morgenröte heraufkam,
26Und Er sah, daß er nichts über ihn vermochte, und berührte ihn an der Hüftpfanne, und die Hüftpfanne Jakobs verrenkte sich, indem er mit Ihm rang.
27Und Er sprach: Entlaß mich, denn die Morgenröte ist heraufgekommen; er aber sprach: Ich entlasse Dich nicht, Du segnest mich denn.
28Und Er sprach zu ihm: Was ist dein Name? Und er sprach: Jakob.
29Und Er sprach: Dein Name heiße hinfort nicht mehr Jakob, sondern Israel; denn du hast wie ein Fürst mit Gott und mit Männern gekämpft, und hast sie übermocht.
30Und Jakob fragte und sprach: Sage mir doch an Deinen Namen; und Er sprach: Warum fragst du nach Meinem Namen? Und Er segnete ihn daselbst.
31Und Jakob nannte den Namen des Ortes Peniel; denn, ich habe Gott von Angesicht zu Angesicht gesehen; und meine Seele ist errettet.
32Und es ging ihm die Sonne auf, wie er bei Peniel hinzog, und er hinkte an seiner Hüfte. Daher essen die Söhne Israels nicht die Bewegungssehne über der Hüftpfanne bis auf diesen Tag; weil Er an der Hüftpfanne Jakobs die Bewegungssehne berührt.

1Y JACOB se fué su camino, y saliéronle al encuentro ángeles de Dios.
2Y dijo Jacob cuando los vió: El campo de Dios es este: y llamó el nombre de aquel lugar Mahanaim.
3Y envió Jacob mensajeros delante de sí á Esaú su hermano, á la tierra de Seir, campo de Edom.
4Y mandóles diciendo: Así diréis á mi señor Esaú: Así dice tu siervo Jacob: Con Labán he morado, y detenídome hasta ahora;
5Y tengo vacas, y asnos, y ovejas, y siervos y siervas; y envío á decirlo á mi señor, por hallar gracia en tus ojos.
6Y los mensajeros volvieron á Jacob, diciendo: Vinimos á tu hermano Esaú, y él también viene á recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres con él.
7Entonces Jacob tuvo gran temor, y angustióse; y partió el pueblo que tenía consigo, y las ovejas y las vacas y los camellos, en dos cuadrillas;
8Y dijo: Si viniere Esaú á la una cuadrilla y la hiriere, la otra cuadrilla escapará.
9Y dijo Jacob: Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: Vuélvete á tu tierra y á tu parentela, y yo te haré bien;
10Menor soy que todas las misericordias, y que toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; que con mi bordón pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos cuadrillas.
11Líbrame ahora de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú, porque le temo; no venga quizá, y me hiera la madre con los hijos.
12Y tú has dicho: Yo te haré bien, y pondré tu simiente como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar por la multitud.
13Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino á la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú:
14Doscientas cabras y veinte machos de cabrío, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,
15Treinta camellas paridas, con sus hijos, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez borricos.
16Y entrególo en mano de sus siervos, cada manada de por sí; y dijo á sus siervos: Pasad delante de mí, y poned espacio entre manada y manada.
17Y mandó al primero, diciendo: Si Esaú mi hermano te encontrare, y te preguntare, diciendo: ¿De quién eres? ¿y adónde vas? ¿y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti?
18Entonces dirás: Presente es de tu siervo Jacob, que envía á mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros.
19Y mandó también al segundo, y al tercero, y á todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas, diciendo: Conforme á esto hablaréis á Esaú, cuando le hallareis.
20Y diréis también: He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros. Porque dijo: Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro: quizá le seré acepto.
21Y pasó el presente delante de él; y él durmió aquella noche en el campamento.
22Y levantóse aquella noche, y tomó sus dos mujeres, y sus dos siervas, y sus once hijos, y pasó el vado de Jaboc.
23Tomólos pues, y pasólos el arroyo, é hizo pasar lo que tenía.
24Y quedóse Jacob solo, y luchó con él un varón hasta que rayaba el alba.
25Y como vió que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y descoyuntóse el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba.
26Y dijo: Déjame, que raya el alba. Y él dijo: No te dejaré, si no me bendices.
27Y él le dijo: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Y él respondió: Jacob.
28Y él dijo: No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel: porque has peleado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.
29Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y él respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre? Y bendíjolo allí.
30Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar, Peniel: porque vi á Dios cara á cara, y fué librada mi alma.
31Y salióle el sol pasado que hubo á Peniel; y cojeaba de su anca.
32Por esto no comen los hijos de Israel, hasta hoy día, del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo: porque tocó á Jacob este sitio de su muslo en el tendón que se contrajo.
King James Version
1And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
2And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God’s host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
3And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
4And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
5And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
6And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
8And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
9And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
10I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
11Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
12And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
13And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
14Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
15Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
16And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
17And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
18Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
19And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
20And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
21So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
22And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
23And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
24And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
32Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
World English Bible
1Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
2When he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s army.” He called the name of that place Mahanaim.
3Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.
4He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.
5I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”
6The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”
7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, along with the flocks, the herds, and the camels, into two companies.
8He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”
9Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD, who said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,’
10I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I crossed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.
11Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me and the mothers with the children.
12You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’”
13He stayed there that night, and took from that which he had with him a present for Esau, his brother:
14two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
15thirty milk camels and their colts, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.
16He delivered them into the hands of his servants, every herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd.”
17He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’
18Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”
19He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, “This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.
20You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”
21So the present passed over before him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.
22He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok.
23He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.
24Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.
25When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.
26The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”
27He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
28He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
29Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.
30Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
31The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.
32Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
