De aquí también despachó mensajeros delante de sí a su hermano Esaú a tierra de Seir, en la Idumea,

And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

dándoles esta orden: Hablaréis de esta manera a mi señor Esaú: Jacob tu hermano te envía a decir lo siguiente: Me fui peregrinando a casa de Labán, y en ella he estado hasta el día presente.
Y mandóles diciendo: Así diréis á mi señor Esaú: Así dice tu siervo Jacob: Con Labán he morado, y detenídome hasta ahora;
And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.
Tengo bueyes, y asnos, y ovejas, y esclavos, y esclavas; y ahora envío estos mensajeros a mi señor, con deseo de hallar gracia en su presencia.
Y tengo vacas, y asnos, y ovejas, y siervos y siervas; y envío á decirlo á mi señor, por hallar gracia en tus ojos.
And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”
Los enviados volvieron a Jacob , diciendo: Fuimos a tu hermano Esaú; y él mismo viene presuroso a tu encuentro con cuatrocientos hombres.
Y los mensajeros volvieron á Jacob, diciendo: Vinimos á tu hermano Esaú, y él también viene á recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres con él.
And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”
Concibió Jacob grandísimo miedo; y lleno de terror, dividió la gente que tenía consigo, junto con los ganados de ovejas, y de bueyes, y de camellos, en dos bandas,
Entonces Jacob tuvo gran temor, y angustióse; y partió el pueblo que tenía consigo, y las ovejas y las vacas y los camellos, en dos cuadrillas;
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

diciendo: Si Esaú acometiere una banda y la destrozare, la otra banda que resta se salvará.
Y dijo: Si viniere Esaú á la una cuadrilla y la hiriere, la otra cuadrilla escapará.
And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”
Dijo después Jacob : ¡Oh Dios de mi padre Abrahán, y Dios de mi padre Isaac!, ¡tú, Señor, que me dijiste: Vuélvete a tu tierra, y al lugar de tu nacimiento , que yo te colmaré de beneficios!
Y dijo Jacob: Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: Vuélvete á tu tierra y á tu parentela, y yo te haré bien;
And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

Yo soy indigno de todas tus misericordias, y de la fidelidad con que has cumplido a tu siervo las promesas que le hiciste; sólo con mi simple cayado pasé este río Jordán, y ahora vuelvo con dos cuadrillas de gentes y ganados.
Menor soy que todas las misericordias, y que toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; que con mi bordón pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos cuadrillas.
I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

Líbrame, te ruego, porque le temo mucho; no sea que arremetiendo, acabe con madres e hijos.

Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

Tú has prometido hacerme mil bienes, y dilatar mi descendencia como las arenas del mar, que por la muchedumbre no pueden contarse.
Y tú has dicho: Yo te haré bien, y pondré tu simiente como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar por la multitud.
And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’”
Habiendo, pues, dormido allí aquella noche, separó de todo lo que tenía, lo que había destinado para regalar a su hermano Esaú,
Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino á la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú:
And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

Y dio esta orden al primero: Si encontrares a mi hermano Esaú, y te preguntare: ¿De quién eres? o ¿a dónde vas? o ¿de quién es eso que conduces?

And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’
has de responder: Es un regalo de tu siervo Jacob , que le envía a mi señor Esaú, y él mismo en persona viene detrás de nosotros.
Entonces dirás: Presente es de tu siervo Jacob, que envía á mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros.
Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”
Las mismas órdenes dio al segundo, y al tercero, y a todos los demás que iban detrás de aquellas manadas, diciendo: En los mismos términos habéis de hablar a Esaú, cuando le encontréis.
Y mandó también al segundo, y al tercero, y á todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas, diciendo: Conforme á esto hablaréis á Esaú, cuando le hallareis.
And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

Y no dejéis de añadir: Tu siervo Jacob en persona, viene siguiendo detrás de nosotros; porque dijo: Le aplacaré con los regalos que preceden, y después me presentaré a él, quizá se me mostrará propicio.
Y diréis también: He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros. Porque dijo: Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro: quizá le seré acepto.
And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”
Remitió, pues, los dones por delante, y él pasó aquella noche en el campamento.

So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

Este varón respetable, viendo que no podía sobrepujar a Jacob , le tocó el tendón del muslo, que al instante se secó.
Y como vió que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y descoyuntóse el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba.
And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.
Y le dijo: Déjame ir, que ya raya el alba. Jacob respondió: No te dejaré ir, si antes no me das la bendición.
Y dijo: Déjame, que raya el alba. Y él dijo: No te dejaré, si no me bendices.
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”
¿Cómo te llamas?, le preguntó el ángel. El respondió: Jacob .
Y él le dijo: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Y él respondió: Jacob.
And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
No ha de ser ya tu nombre Jacob , dijo entonces el ángel, sino Israel, porque si con el mismo Dios te has mostrado fuerte, ¿cuánto más prevalecerás contra todos los hombres?
Y él dijo: No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel: porque has peleado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
Le preguntó Jacob : Dime, ahora, ¿cuál es tu nombre? Respondió: ¿Por qué quieres saber mi nombre? Y allí mismo le dio su bendición.
Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y él respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre? Y bendíjolo allí.
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.
Por donde Jacob llamó aquel lugar Fanuel, diciendo: Yo he visto a Dios cara a cara, y mi vida ha quedado a salvo.
Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar, Peniel: porque vi á Dios cara á cara, y fué librada mi alma.
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
Al punto que partió de Fanuel, le salió el sol; mas él iba cojeando de un pie.
Y salióle el sol pasado que hubo á Peniel; y cojeaba de su anca.
And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.
Por este motivo los hijos de Israel, hasta el día de hoy, no comen del nervio de los animales, correspondiente al que se secó en el muslo de Jacob ; en memoria de que habiendo tocado el ángel dicho nervio, quedó éste sin movimiento.
Por esto no comen los hijos de Israel, hasta hoy día, del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo: porque tocó á Jacob este sitio de su muslo en el tendón que se contrajo.
Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
