Depois Jacó mandou mensageiros adiante dele, ao encontro do seu irmão Esaú. Eles foram para a terra de Seir, território de Edom
Y envió Jacob mensajeros delante de sí á Esaú su hermano, á la tierra de Seir, campo de Edom.
And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

e levaram esta mensagem: “Jacó, seu servo, manda dizer o seguinte: ‘Morei como peregrino com Labão, e na companhia dele fiquei até agora.
Y mandóles diciendo: Así diréis á mi señor Esaú: Así dice tu siervo Jacob: Con Labán he morado, y detenídome hasta ahora;
And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.
Estou voltando de lá com bois, jumentos, ovelhas e cabras, servos e servas. Envio estes mensageiros para avisar ao meu senhor, para que me receba de forma amigável’ ”.

Os mensageiros voltaram a Jacó, dizendo: “Fomos até o seu irmão Esaú, e ele está vindo ao seu encontro com quatrocentos homens”.
Y los mensajeros volvieron á Jacob, diciendo: Vinimos á tu hermano Esaú, y él también viene á recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres con él.
And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”
Jacó teve medo e perturbou-se. Ele dividiu em dois grupos as pessoas que estavam com ele, bem como as ovelhas e cabras, os bois e os camelos,
Entonces Jacob tuvo gran temor, y angustióse; y partió el pueblo que tenía consigo, y las ovejas y las vacas y los camellos, en dos cuadrillas;
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

pois pensou: “Se Esaú atacar um dos grupos, talvez o outro consiga escapar”.
Y dijo: Si viniere Esaú á la una cuadrilla y la hiriere, la otra cuadrilla escapará.
And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”
E Jacó fez esta oração: “Ó Deus de meu pai Abraão e Deus de meu pai Isaque! Ó Senhor que me disse: ‘Volte para a sua terra e seus parentes, e eu farei com que tudo corra bem’.
Y dijo Jacob: Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: Vuélvete á tu tierra y á tu parentela, y yo te haré bien;
And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

Não mereço nenhuma das suas bondades para comigo. Não sou digno da maneira fiel como o Senhor tem cumprido a sua palavra com o seu servo. Pois saí de casa e atravessei o rio Jordão trazendo apenas o meu cajado, e agora volto com duas caravanas completas!
Menor soy que todas las misericordias, y que toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; que con mi bordón pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos cuadrillas.
I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

Mas o Senhor prometeu: “Esteja certo de que eu farei bem a você e farei com que os seus descendentes sejam tão numerosos como a areia do mar, que de tão numerosa, não se pode contar”.
Y tú has dicho: Yo te haré bien, y pondré tu simiente como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar por la multitud.
And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’”
Jacó passou ali aquela noite, e preparou entre os seus rebanhos um presente para dar ao seu irmão Esaú:
Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino á la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú:
And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
He stayed there that night, and took from that which he had with him a present for Esau, his brother:
duzentas cabras e vinte bodes, duzentas ovelhas e vinte carneiros,
Doscientas cabras y veinte machos de cabrío, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,
Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
trinta fêmeas de camelo com seus filhotes, quarenta vacas e dez touros, vinte jumentas e dez jumentos.
Treinta camellas paridas, con sus hijos, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez borricos.

Ele confiou os rebanhos do presente aos seus servos e disse-lhes: “Vão à minha frente mas deixem um bom espaço entre um rebanho e outro”.

And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.

Jacó instruiu ao primeiro servo, dizendo: “Quando meu irmão Esaú encontrar você e perguntar: ‘Para quem você trabalha? Para onde vai? Quem é o dono deste rebanho à sua frente?’
Y mandó al primero, diciendo: Si Esaú mi hermano te encontrare, y te preguntare, diciendo: ¿De quién eres? ¿y adónde vas? ¿y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti?
And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’
você responderá: ‘É do seu servo Jacó. É um presente para o meu senhor Esaú. Ele está vindo logo atrás de nós’ ”.
Entonces dirás: Presente es de tu siervo Jacob, que envía á mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros.
Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”
Jacó deu a mesma instrução ao segundo, ao terceiro e a cada um dos guias dos rebanhos: “Digam a mesma coisa a Esaú quando o encontrarem,

And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

e acrescentem: O seu servo Jacó está vindo atrás de nós”. Ele pensava: “Vou acalmar os ânimos de Esaú com esses presentes que estou enviando na minha frente, e quando nos encontrarmos, talvez ele me receba amigavelmente”.
Y diréis también: He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros. Porque dijo: Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro: quizá le seré acepto.
And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”
Assim enviou os presentes na frente; ele, no entanto, passou aquela noite no acampamento.

Depois de fazê-los atravessar o ribeiro, fez atravessar também tudo o que lhe pertencia.

Jacó ficou sozinho. Então veio um homem para lutar com ele até o amanhecer.

Quando o homem percebeu que não podia vencer a luta, tocou na articulação da coxa de Jacó, de modo que deslocou a coxa de Jacó, enquanto lutavam.
Y como vió que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y descoyuntóse el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba.
And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.
Então o homem disse: “Deixe-me ir embora, pois já está amanhecendo”. Mas Jacó respondeu: “Não deixarei que vá embora, enquanto não me abençoar”.
Y dijo: Déjame, que raya el alba. Y él dijo: No te dejaré, si no me bendices.
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”
“Qual é o seu nome?”, perguntou o homem. “Jacó”, foi a resposta.
Y él le dijo: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Y él respondió: Jacob.
And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
Então o homem disse: “Você não mais se chamará Jacó, mas sim Israel, porque você lutou com Deus e com os homens, e venceu”.
Y él dijo: No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel: porque has peleado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
“Por favor, diga-me, qual é o seu nome?”, perguntou Jacó. “Por que você pergunta pelo meu nome?”, disse o homem. E o abençoou ali.
Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y él respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre? Y bendíjolo allí.
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.
Jacó chamou àquele lugar Peniel, e disse: “Vi Deus face a face, e continuo vivo!”
Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar, Peniel: porque vi á Dios cara á cara, y fué librada mi alma.
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
Quando o sol estava nascendo, Jacó atravessou Peniel, e mancava por causa da coxa deslocada.
Y salióle el sol pasado que hubo á Peniel; y cojeaba de su anca.
And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.
Por isso até hoje os israelitas não comem o músculo ligado à articulação da coxa, porque foi ali que o homem feriu a Jacó.
Por esto no comen los hijos de Israel, hasta hoy día, del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo: porque tocó á Jacob este sitio de su muslo en el tendón que se contrajo.
Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
