1Jacob de son côté poursuivit sa route, et il eut la rencontre d'anges de Dieu.
2Et il dit en les voyant : C'est le camp de Dieu ! Et il donna à ce lieu le nom de Mahanaïm (double camp).
3Et Jacob envoya devant lui des messagers à Esaü, son frère, dans le pays de Seïr, dans le pays d'Edom ;
4et il leur donna ses instructions en ces termes : Ainsi vous parlerez à mon seigneur Esaü : Ainsi parle ton serviteur Jacob : J'ai séjourné chez Laban et y suis resté jusqu'à présent,
5et j'ai acquis des bœufs et des ânes, des brebis, et des serviteurs et des servantes, et j'en fais donner avis à mon seigneur, pour trouver grâce à tes yeux.
6Et les messagers revinrent auprès de Jacob en disant : Nous nous sommes rendus chez ton frère, chez Esaü ; et de plus il est en marche à ta rencontre et a quatre cents hommes avec lui.
7Alors Jacob craignit fort et fut dans la détresse, et il partagea le monde qui était avec lui, et le menu et le gros bétail et les chameaux, en deux camps.
8Et il dit : Si Esaü fond sur l'un des camps et le met en déroute, le camp qui restera pourra se sauver.
9Et Jacob dit : Dieu de mon père Abraham, et Dieu de mon père Isaac, Éternel, qui m'as dit : Retourne dans ton pays et dans ta patrie, je veux être ton bienfaiteur !
10je Suis trop petit pour toutes les grâces et pour toute la fidélité que tu as montrée à ton serviteur ; car avec mon bâton j'ai passé ce Jourdain, et maintenant je forme deux caravanes.
11Ah ! sauve-moi de la main de mon frère, de la main d'Esaü, car je le redoute, je crains qu'il ne vienne et ne me fasse tomber sous ses coups, la mère sur les enfants.
12Aussi bien tu as dit : Je veux être ton bienfaiteur, et rendre ta postérité égale au sable de la mer, qu'on ne peut compter tant il est immense.
13Et il passa cette nuit en ce lieu, et il prit dans ce qu'il transportait avec lui un présent pour Esaü, son frère,
14deux cents chèvres, vingt boucs, deux cents brebis et vingt béliers,
15trente chamelles mères avec leurs petits, quarante vaches et dix taureaux, vingt ânesses et dix ânes.
16Et il les remit à ses serviteurs, chaque troupeau séparément, et il dit à ses serviteurs : Précédez-moi, et laissez une distance entre un troupeau et l'autre.
17Et il donna cet ordre au premier : Si Esaü, mon frère, te rencontre et te fait cette question : A qui es-tu ? et où vas-tu ? et à qui est ce troupeau qui est devant toi ?
18tu répondras : A ton serviteur Jacob ; c'est un présent envoyé à mon seigneur Esaü, et voici, il vient lui-même après nous.
19Et il donna aussi ses ordres et au second, et au troisième, et à tous ceux qui marchaient derrière les troupeaux, en ces termes : C'est en ces termes que vous parlerez à Esaü, quand vous le trouverez,
20et vous direz : Voici, ton serviteur Jacob vient aussi après nous. Car il se disait : Je veux l'apaiser au moyen du présent qui me précède, et ensuite je le verrai ; peut-être me fera-t-il bon accueil.
21Et ainsi le présent prenait l'avance sur lui ; et il passa cette nuit au camp.
22Et il se leva la même nuit et prit ses deux femmes et ses deux servantes et ses onze enfants, et passa le gué du Jabok,
23et les prit et leur fit passer la rivière, et il transporta tout ce qu'il avait.
24Et Jacob resta ainsi seul. Alors un homme lutta avec lui jusqu'au lever de l'aurore.
25Et voyant qu'il ne pouvait le vaincre, il le frappa à l'articulation de la hanche, et l'articulation de la hanche de Jacob fut luxée pendant qu'il luttait avec lui.
26Et il dit : Laisse-moi aller, car l'aurore se lève. Et il dit : Je ne te laisse point aller que tu ne m'aies béni.
27Et il lui dit : Quel est ton nom ? Et il répondit : Jacob.
28Et il dit : Jacob ne sera plus le nom dont on t'appellera, mais Israël, car tu as lutté avec Dieu et avec des hommes et tu l'as emporté.
29Et Jacob l'interrogeant lui dit : Découvre-moi donc ton nom. Et il dit : Pourquoi me demandes-tu donc mon nom ? Et Il le bénit là.
30Et Jacob appela ce lieu du nom de Pniel (face de Dieu) ; « car j'ai vu Dieu face à face et mon âme a été sauvée. »
31Et le soleil se levait comme il passait à Pniel ; mais il boitait de sa hanche.
32C'est pourquoi les enfants d'Israël ne mangent point jusqu'aujourd'hui le tendon qui est à l'articulation de la hanche, parce qu'il avait frappé l'articulation de la hanche de Jacob, le tendon.

1Y JACOB se fué su camino, y saliéronle al encuentro ángeles de Dios.
2Y dijo Jacob cuando los vió: El campo de Dios es este: y llamó el nombre de aquel lugar Mahanaim.
3Y envió Jacob mensajeros delante de sí á Esaú su hermano, á la tierra de Seir, campo de Edom.
4Y mandóles diciendo: Así diréis á mi señor Esaú: Así dice tu siervo Jacob: Con Labán he morado, y detenídome hasta ahora;
5Y tengo vacas, y asnos, y ovejas, y siervos y siervas; y envío á decirlo á mi señor, por hallar gracia en tus ojos.
6Y los mensajeros volvieron á Jacob, diciendo: Vinimos á tu hermano Esaú, y él también viene á recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres con él.
7Entonces Jacob tuvo gran temor, y angustióse; y partió el pueblo que tenía consigo, y las ovejas y las vacas y los camellos, en dos cuadrillas;
8Y dijo: Si viniere Esaú á la una cuadrilla y la hiriere, la otra cuadrilla escapará.
9Y dijo Jacob: Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: Vuélvete á tu tierra y á tu parentela, y yo te haré bien;
10Menor soy que todas las misericordias, y que toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; que con mi bordón pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos cuadrillas.
11Líbrame ahora de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú, porque le temo; no venga quizá, y me hiera la madre con los hijos.
12Y tú has dicho: Yo te haré bien, y pondré tu simiente como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar por la multitud.
13Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino á la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú:
14Doscientas cabras y veinte machos de cabrío, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,
15Treinta camellas paridas, con sus hijos, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez borricos.
16Y entrególo en mano de sus siervos, cada manada de por sí; y dijo á sus siervos: Pasad delante de mí, y poned espacio entre manada y manada.
17Y mandó al primero, diciendo: Si Esaú mi hermano te encontrare, y te preguntare, diciendo: ¿De quién eres? ¿y adónde vas? ¿y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti?
18Entonces dirás: Presente es de tu siervo Jacob, que envía á mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros.
19Y mandó también al segundo, y al tercero, y á todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas, diciendo: Conforme á esto hablaréis á Esaú, cuando le hallareis.
20Y diréis también: He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros. Porque dijo: Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro: quizá le seré acepto.
21Y pasó el presente delante de él; y él durmió aquella noche en el campamento.
22Y levantóse aquella noche, y tomó sus dos mujeres, y sus dos siervas, y sus once hijos, y pasó el vado de Jaboc.
23Tomólos pues, y pasólos el arroyo, é hizo pasar lo que tenía.
24Y quedóse Jacob solo, y luchó con él un varón hasta que rayaba el alba.
25Y como vió que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y descoyuntóse el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba.
26Y dijo: Déjame, que raya el alba. Y él dijo: No te dejaré, si no me bendices.
27Y él le dijo: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Y él respondió: Jacob.
28Y él dijo: No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel: porque has peleado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.
29Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y él respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre? Y bendíjolo allí.
30Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar, Peniel: porque vi á Dios cara á cara, y fué librada mi alma.
31Y salióle el sol pasado que hubo á Peniel; y cojeaba de su anca.
32Por esto no comen los hijos de Israel, hasta hoy día, del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo: porque tocó á Jacob este sitio de su muslo en el tendón que se contrajo.
King James Version
1And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
2And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God’s host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
3And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
4And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
5And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
6And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
8And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
9And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
10I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
11Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
12And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
13And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
14Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
15Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
16And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
17And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
18Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
19And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
20And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
21So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
22And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
23And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
24And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
32Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
World English Bible
1Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
2When he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s army.” He called the name of that place Mahanaim.
3Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.
4He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.
5I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”
6The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”
7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, along with the flocks, the herds, and the camels, into two companies.
8He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”
9Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD, who said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,’
10I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I crossed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.
11Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me and the mothers with the children.
12You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’”
13He stayed there that night, and took from that which he had with him a present for Esau, his brother:
14two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
15thirty milk camels and their colts, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.
16He delivered them into the hands of his servants, every herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd.”
17He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’
18Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”
19He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, “This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.
20You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”
21So the present passed over before him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.
22He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok.
23He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.
24Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.
25When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.
26The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”
27He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
28He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
29Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.
30Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
31The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.
32Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
