And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God’s host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

Jacob envió mensajeros a su hermano Esaú en Edom, que está en la tierra de Seír.
Y envió Jacob mensajeros delante de sí á Esaú su hermano, á la tierra de Seir, campo de Edom.
And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.
Les pidió que le dijeran a Esaú: «Te saluda tu siervo Jacob. Hasta hace poco estuve viviendo con nuestro tío Labán.
Y mandóles diciendo: Así diréis á mi señor Esaú: Así dice tu siervo Jacob: Con Labán he morado, y detenídome hasta ahora;
And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.
Ahora poseo bueyes, burros, ovejas y muchos esclavos y esclavas. He enviado estos mensajeros para que te den la noticia de que regreso, con la esperanza de que tengamos un encuentro amistoso».
Y tengo vacas, y asnos, y ovejas, y siervos y siervas; y envío á decirlo á mi señor, por hallar gracia en tus ojos.
And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”
Los mensajeros volvieron con la noticia de que Esaú estaba en camino para encontrarse con Jacob, ¡con cuatrocientos hombres!
Y los mensajeros volvieron á Jacob, diciendo: Vinimos á tu hermano Esaú, y él también viene á recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres con él.
And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”
El temor y la angustia se apoderaron de Jacob. Dividió la familia, los rebaños, las reses y los camellos en dos grupos;
Entonces Jacob tuvo gran temor, y angustióse; y partió el pueblo que tenía consigo, y las ovejas y las vacas y los camellos, en dos cuadrillas;
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

porque se dijo: «Si Esaú ataca un grupo, el otro podrá escapar».
Y dijo: Si viniere Esaú á la una cuadrilla y la hiriere, la otra cuadrilla escapará.
And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”
Entonces Jacob oró: «Señor, Dios de mi abuelo Abraham y de mi padre Isaac, tú me dijiste que regresara a la tierra de mis padres y que estarías conmigo para que me fuera bien.
Y dijo Jacob: Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: Vuélvete á tu tierra y á tu parentela, y yo te haré bien;
And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

Mira, no soy digno de recibir la más pequeña de las misericordias que me has mostrado una y otra vez, conforme a tu promesa. Cuando salí de mi hogar y crucé el río Jordán, la única posesión que tenía era mi bastón; pero ahora necesito dos campamentos para guardar todo lo que tengo.
Menor soy que todas las misericordias, y que toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; que con mi bordón pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos cuadrillas.
I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I crossed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.
¡Te suplico que me libres del furor de mi hermano Esaú! Tengo miedo, un miedo terrible de que él venga a matarme, y mate también a estas mujeres y a sus hijos.
Líbrame ahora de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú, porque le temo; no venga quizá, y me hiera la madre con los hijos.
Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me and the mothers with the children.
Recuerda que tú prometiste que me harías bien y que multiplicarías mis descendientes hasta que llegaran a ser como la arena del mar, de modo que no podrían ser contados».
Y tú has dicho: Yo te haré bien, y pondré tu simiente como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar por la multitud.
And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’”
Jacob pasó allí la noche y preparó un obsequio para su hermano Esaú: 200 cabras, 20 chivos, 200 ovejas, 20 carneros, 30 camellas paridas con sus crías, 40 vacas, 10 toros, 20 burras, 10 burros.
Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino á la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú:
And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
He stayed there that night, and took from that which he had with him a present for Esau, his brother:

Doscientas cabras y veinte machos de cabrío, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,

Treinta camellas paridas, con sus hijos, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez borricos.

Instruyó a sus siervos para que los condujeran en grupos, y les pidió que guardaran una distancia prudente entre grupo y grupo.
Y entrególo en mano de sus siervos, cada manada de por sí; y dijo á sus siervos: Pasad delante de mí, y poned espacio entre manada y manada.
And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.

Le dijo al que llevaba el primer grupo que cuando encontrara a Esaú, y este preguntara: «¿Hacia dónde van? ¿A quién sirven? ¿De quién son estos animales?»,
Y mandó al primero, diciendo: Si Esaú mi hermano te encontrare, y te preguntare, diciendo: ¿De quién eres? ¿y adónde vas? ¿y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti?
And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’
le respondiera: «Mi señor Esaú, este es un regalo que le envía mi amo Jacob. A propósito, él viene detrás de nosotros».
Entonces dirás: Presente es de tu siervo Jacob, que envía á mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros.
Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”
Jacob pidió a cada uno de los que envió al frente de los grupos que le dieran el mismo mensaje a Esaú.
Y mandó también al segundo, y al tercero, y á todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas, diciendo: Conforme á esto hablaréis á Esaú, cuando le hallareis.
And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

La estrategia de Jacob consistía en apaciguar a su hermano por medio de los presentes enviados antes de su encuentro. Jacob pensaba que quizá de esa manera Esaú dejaría de odiarlo, y cuando se encontraran lo recibiría muy bien.
Y diréis también: He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros. Porque dijo: Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro: quizá le seré acepto.
And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”
Así que Jacob le envió a Esaú los regalos por adelantado, y él pasó la noche en el campamento.
Y pasó el presente delante de él; y él durmió aquella noche en el campamento.
So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
So the present passed over before him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.
Pero durante la noche, Jacob se levantó y despertó a sus dos esposas, a las concubinas y a los once hijos y los hizo cruzar el Jordán por el vado de Jaboc. Enseguida regresó al campamento y se quedó solo allí. Y un varón luchó con él hasta el alba.
Y levantóse aquella noche, y tomó sus dos mujeres, y sus dos siervas, y sus once hijos, y pasó el vado de Jaboc.
And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

Tomólos pues, y pasólos el arroyo, é hizo pasar lo que tenía.

Cuando el varón vio que no podía ganar la lucha, hirió a Jacob en la articulación de la cadera y se la dislocó.
Y como vió que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y descoyuntóse el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba.
And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.
Entonces el varón le dijo: ―Déjame ir, porque ya amanece. Pero Jacob le contestó: ―No te soltaré si no me bendices.
Y dijo: Déjame, que raya el alba. Y él dijo: No te dejaré, si no me bendices.
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”
―¿Cómo te llamas? —le preguntó el varón. ―Jacob —fue la respuesta.
Y él le dijo: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Y él respondió: Jacob.
And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
―Ese ya no será tu nombre —le dijo el varón—. A partir de hoy te llamarás Israel, porque has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has ganado.
Y él dijo: No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel: porque has peleado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
Jacob le preguntó: ―¿Cómo te llamas? ―¿Por qué me lo preguntas? —le dijo aquel varón. Luego bendijo a Jacob.
Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y él respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre? Y bendíjolo allí.
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.
A aquel lugar Jacob le puso Peniel (rostro de Dios), porque dijo: «Vi a Dios cara a cara y me dejó con vida».
Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar, Peniel: porque vi á Dios cara á cara, y fué librada mi alma.
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
Salía el sol cuando Jacob emprendió el camino, y renqueaba a causa de su cadera.
Y salióle el sol pasado que hubo á Peniel; y cojeaba de su anca.
And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.
(Esta es la razón por la que el pueblo de Israel, hasta este día, no come del tendón que está en la articulación de la cadera, porque en esa parte Jacob fue herido).
Por esto no comen los hijos de Israel, hasta hoy día, del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo: porque tocó á Jacob este sitio de su muslo en el tendón que se contrajo.
Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
