1Am andern Morgen aber in der Frühe küßte Laban seine Enkel und seine Töchter und nahm Abschied von ihnen; dann brach er auf und kehrte an seinen Wohnort zurück.
2Als nun auch Jakob seines Weges zog, begegneten ihm Engel Gottes.
3Sobald Jakob sie erblickte, sagte er: »Hier ist Gottes Heerlager!« Darum nannte er jenen Ort ›Mahanaim‹.
4Hierauf sandte Jakob Boten voraus an seinen Bruder Esau nach der Landschaft Seir, ins Gebiet der Edomiter,
5und gab ihnen folgenden Auftrag: »So sollt ihr zu meinem Herrn, zu Esau, sagen: ›Dein Knecht Jakob läßt dir folgendes melden: Ich habe bei Laban in der Fremde gelebt und mich bis jetzt dort aufgehalten;
6ich habe mir dort Rinder und Esel, Kleinvieh, Knechte und Mägde erworben und sende nun Boten, um es meinem Herrn mitzuteilen, damit ich Gnade in deinen Augen finde.‹«
7Die Boten kehrten dann zu Jakob zurück mit der Meldung: »Wir sind zu deinem Bruder Esau gekommen, und er zieht dir auch schon in Begleitung von vierhundert Mann entgegen.«
8Da geriet Jakob in große Angst, und es wurde ihm bange; er teilte daher die Leute, die er bei sich hatte, und ebenso das Kleinvieh sowie die Rinder und Kamele in zwei Heere;
9denn er dachte: »Wenn Esau den einen Zug überfällt und niederschlägt, so wird doch der andere Zug entrinnen können.«
10Dann betete Jakob: »Gott meines Vaters Abraham und meines Vaters Isaak, HERR, der du mir geboten hast: ›Kehre in dein Vaterland und zu deiner Verwandtschaft zurück, ich will dir Gutes tun‹ –
11ich bin zu gering für all die Gnadenerweise und all die Treue, die du deinem Knecht erwiesen hast! Denn nur mit meinem Wanderstabe bin ich (einst) über den Jordan dort gezogen und bin jetzt zu zwei Heeren geworden.
12Ach, errette mich nun aus der Hand meines Bruders, aus der Hand Esaus! Denn ich bin in Angst vor ihm, daß er kommt und uns erschlägt, die Mütter samt den Kindern!
13Du hast mir doch verheißen: ›Gewiß, ich will dir Gutes tun und deine Nachkommen so zahlreich werden lassen, daß sie sind wie der Sand am Meer, den man vor Menge nicht zählen kann.‹«
14Er blieb dann in jener Nacht dort und wählte aus dem Vieh, das ihm gerade zur Hand war, ein Geschenk für seinen Bruder Esau aus,
15nämlich zweihundert Ziegen und zwanzig Böcke, zweihundert Mutterschafe und zwanzig Widder,
16dreißig säugende Kamele nebst ihren Füllen, vierzig junge Kühe und zehn junge Stiere, zwanzig Eselinnen und zehn Eselfüllen.
17Er übergab diese seinen Knechten, jede Herde besonders, und befahl seinen Knechten: »Zieht vor mir her und laßt einen Abstand zwischen den einzelnen Herden!«
18Dann gab er dem ersten folgende Weisung: »Wenn mein Bruder Esau dir begegnet und dich fragt: ›Wem gehörst du, und wohin willst du, und wem gehören die Tiere, die du da treibst?‹,
19so antworte: ›Sie gehören deinem Knecht Jakob; es ist das ein Geschenk, das er meinem Herrn Esau sendet; er selbst kommt gleich hinter uns her.‹«
20Dieselbe Weisung gab er auch dem zweiten und dem dritten und allen anderen, welche die Herden trieben, nämlich: »Ganz ebenso sollt ihr zu Esau sagen, wenn ihr ihm begegnet,
21und sollt weiter sagen: ›Dein Knecht Jakob kommt selbst gleich hinter uns her.‹« Er dachte nämlich: »Ich will ihn durch das Geschenk versöhnen, das mir vorauszieht; erst dann will ich ihm selber vor die Augen treten; vielleicht nimmt er mich dann freundlich an.«
22So zog also das Geschenk vor ihm her, während er selbst jene Nacht im Lager zubrachte.
23Er machte sich aber noch in derselben Nacht auf, nahm seine beiden Frauen und seine beiden Leibmägde samt seinen elf Söhnen und setzte über die Furt des Jabbok.
24Er nahm sie also und ließ sie über den Fluß fahren, und als er dann auch alle seine Habe hinübergebracht hatte,
25blieb er allein zurück. Da rang ein Mann mit ihm bis zum Aufgang der Morgenröte.
26Als dieser nun sah, daß er ihn nicht bezwingen konnte, gab er ihm einen Schlag auf das Hüftgelenk; dadurch wurde Jakobs Hüftgelenk während seines Ringens mit ihm verrenkt.
27Da sagte jener: »Laß mich los, denn die Morgenröte ist schon heraufgezogen!« Jakob aber antwortete: »Ich lasse dich nicht los, bevor du mich gesegnet hast.«
28Da fragte jener ihn: »Wie heißt du?« Er antwortete: »Jakob.«
29Da sagte er: »Du sollst hinfort nicht mehr Jakob heißen, sondern ›Israel‹; denn du hast mit Gott und mit Menschen gekämpft und bist Sieger geblieben.«
30Da richtete Jakob die Bitte an ihn: »Teile mir doch deinen Namen mit!« Er aber erwiderte: »Warum willst du meinen Namen wissen?« Hierauf segnete er ihn dort.
31Jakob nannte dann jenen Ort ›Pniel‹; »denn«, sagte er, »ich habe Gott von Angesicht zu Angesicht gesehen und bin doch am Leben geblieben«.
32Als er dann an Pniel vorübergezogen war, ging ihm die Sonne auf; er hinkte aber an seiner Hüfte.
33Darum essen die Israeliten bis auf den heutigen Tag den Muskel nicht, der über der Hüftpfanne liegt, weil er dem Jakob einen Schlag auf die Hüftpfanne, den Hüftmuskel, versetzt hatte.

1Y JACOB se fué su camino, y saliéronle al encuentro ángeles de Dios.
2Y dijo Jacob cuando los vió: El campo de Dios es este: y llamó el nombre de aquel lugar Mahanaim.
3Y envió Jacob mensajeros delante de sí á Esaú su hermano, á la tierra de Seir, campo de Edom.
4Y mandóles diciendo: Así diréis á mi señor Esaú: Así dice tu siervo Jacob: Con Labán he morado, y detenídome hasta ahora;
5Y tengo vacas, y asnos, y ovejas, y siervos y siervas; y envío á decirlo á mi señor, por hallar gracia en tus ojos.
6Y los mensajeros volvieron á Jacob, diciendo: Vinimos á tu hermano Esaú, y él también viene á recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres con él.
7Entonces Jacob tuvo gran temor, y angustióse; y partió el pueblo que tenía consigo, y las ovejas y las vacas y los camellos, en dos cuadrillas;
8Y dijo: Si viniere Esaú á la una cuadrilla y la hiriere, la otra cuadrilla escapará.
9Y dijo Jacob: Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: Vuélvete á tu tierra y á tu parentela, y yo te haré bien;
10Menor soy que todas las misericordias, y que toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; que con mi bordón pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos cuadrillas.
11Líbrame ahora de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú, porque le temo; no venga quizá, y me hiera la madre con los hijos.
12Y tú has dicho: Yo te haré bien, y pondré tu simiente como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar por la multitud.
13Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino á la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú:
14Doscientas cabras y veinte machos de cabrío, doscientas ovejas y veinte carneros,
15Treinta camellas paridas, con sus hijos, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez borricos.
16Y entrególo en mano de sus siervos, cada manada de por sí; y dijo á sus siervos: Pasad delante de mí, y poned espacio entre manada y manada.
17Y mandó al primero, diciendo: Si Esaú mi hermano te encontrare, y te preguntare, diciendo: ¿De quién eres? ¿y adónde vas? ¿y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti?
18Entonces dirás: Presente es de tu siervo Jacob, que envía á mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros.
19Y mandó también al segundo, y al tercero, y á todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas, diciendo: Conforme á esto hablaréis á Esaú, cuando le hallareis.
20Y diréis también: He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros. Porque dijo: Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro: quizá le seré acepto.
21Y pasó el presente delante de él; y él durmió aquella noche en el campamento.
22Y levantóse aquella noche, y tomó sus dos mujeres, y sus dos siervas, y sus once hijos, y pasó el vado de Jaboc.
23Tomólos pues, y pasólos el arroyo, é hizo pasar lo que tenía.
24Y quedóse Jacob solo, y luchó con él un varón hasta que rayaba el alba.
25Y como vió que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y descoyuntóse el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba.
26Y dijo: Déjame, que raya el alba. Y él dijo: No te dejaré, si no me bendices.
27Y él le dijo: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Y él respondió: Jacob.
28Y él dijo: No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel: porque has peleado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.
29Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y él respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre? Y bendíjolo allí.
30Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar, Peniel: porque vi á Dios cara á cara, y fué librada mi alma.
31Y salióle el sol pasado que hubo á Peniel; y cojeaba de su anca.
32Por esto no comen los hijos de Israel, hasta hoy día, del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo: porque tocó á Jacob este sitio de su muslo en el tendón que se contrajo.

1And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
2And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God’s host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.
3And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
4And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
5And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
6And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
8And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
9And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
10I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
11Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.
12And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
13And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
14Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
15Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
16And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.
17And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
18Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
19And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.
20And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
21So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.
22And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
23And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
24And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
32Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.

1Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.
2When he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s army.” He called the name of that place Mahanaim.
3Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.
4He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.
5I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”
6The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”
7Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, along with the flocks, the herds, and the camels, into two companies.
8He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”
9Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD, who said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,’
10I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I crossed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.
11Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me and the mothers with the children.
12You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’”
13He stayed there that night, and took from that which he had with him a present for Esau, his brother:
14two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
15thirty milk camels and their colts, forty cows, ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.
16He delivered them into the hands of his servants, every herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd.”
17He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’
18Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”
19He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, “This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.
20You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”
21So the present passed over before him, and he himself stayed that night in the camp.
22He rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of the Jabbok.
23He took them, and sent them over the stream, and sent over that which he had.
24Jacob was left alone, and wrestled with a man there until the breaking of the day.
25When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.
26The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”
27He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
28He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
29Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.
30Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
31The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.
32Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
