And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

Et leur commanda, en disant : Vous parlerez en cette manière à mon Seigneur Esaü : Ainsi a dit ton serviteur Jacob ; j’ai demeuré comme étranger chez Laban, et m’y suis arrêté jusqu’à présent.
Y mandóles diciendo: Así diréis á mi señor Esaú: Así dice tu siervo Jacob: Con Labán he morado, y detenídome hasta ahora;
And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.
Et j’ai des boeufs, des ânes, des brebis, des serviteurs, et des servantes ; ce que j’envoie annoncer à mon Seigneur, afin de trouver grâce devant lui.
Y tengo vacas, y asnos, y ovejas, y siervos y siervas; y envío á decirlo á mi señor, por hallar gracia en tus ojos.
And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”
Et les messagers retournèrent à Jacob, et lui dirent : Nous sommes venus vers ton frère Esaü, et même il vient au-devant de toi, ayant quatre cents hommes avec lui.
Y los mensajeros volvieron á Jacob, diciendo: Vinimos á tu hermano Esaú, y él también viene á recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres con él.
And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”
Alors Jacob craignit beaucoup, et fut dans une grande angoisse ; et ayant partagé le peuple qui était avec lui, et les brebis, et les boeufs, et les chameaux en deux bandes, il dit :
Entonces Jacob tuvo gran temor, y angustióse; y partió el pueblo que tenía consigo, y las ovejas y las vacas y los camellos, en dos cuadrillas;
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, along with the flocks, the herds, and the camels, into two companies.
Si Esaü vient à l’une de ces bandes, et qu’il la frappe, la bande qui demeurera de reste échappera.
Y dijo: Si viniere Esaú á la una cuadrilla y la hiriere, la otra cuadrilla escapará.
And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”
Jacob dit aussi : Ô Dieu de mon père Abraham, Dieu de mon père Isaac, ô Eternel qui m’as dit : Retourne en ton pays, et vers ta parenté, et je te ferai du bien.
Y dijo Jacob: Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: Vuélvete á tu tierra y á tu parentela, y yo te haré bien;
And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

Je suis trop petit au prix de toutes tes gratuités, et de toute la vérité dont tu as usé envers ton serviteur ; car j’ai passé ce Jourdain avec mon bâton, mais maintenant je m’en retourne avec ces deux bandes.
Menor soy que todas las misericordias, y que toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; que con mi bordón pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos cuadrillas.
I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses, and of all the truth, which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I crossed over this Jordan; and now I have become two companies.
Je te prie, délivre-moi de la main de mon frère Esaü ; car je crains qu’il ne vienne, et qu’il ne me frappe, et qu’il ne tue la mère avec les enfants.
Líbrame ahora de la mano de mi hermano, de la mano de Esaú, porque le temo; no venga quizá, y me hiera la madre con los hijos.
Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

Or tu as dit : Certes, je te ferai du bien, et je ferai devenir ta postérité comme le sable de la mer, lequel on ne saurait compter à cause de son grand nombre.
Y tú has dicho: Yo te haré bien, y pondré tu simiente como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar por la multitud.
And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’”
Et il passa la nuit en ce lieu-là, et prit de ce qui lui vint en main pour en faire un présent à Esaü son frère.
Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino á la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú:
And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

Savoir deux cents chèvres, vingt boucs, deux cents brebis, vingt moutons.

Trente femelles de chameaux qui allaitaient, et leurs petits ; quarante jeunes vaches, dix jeunes taureaux, vingt ânesses, et dix ânons.
Treinta camellas paridas, con sus hijos, cuarenta vacas y diez novillos, veinte asnas y diez borricos.

Y mandó al primero, diciendo: Si Esaú mi hermano te encontrare, y te preguntare, diciendo: ¿De quién eres? ¿y adónde vas? ¿y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti?
And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’
Alors tu diras : Je suis à ton serviteur Jacob : c’est un présent qu’il envoie à mon Seigneur Esaü ; et le voilà lui-même après nous.
Entonces dirás: Presente es de tu siervo Jacob, que envía á mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros.
Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”
Il fit aussi le même commandement au second, et au troisième, et à tous ceux qui allaient après les troupeaux, disant : Vous parlerez en ces termes-ci à Esaü, quand vous l’aurez trouvé ;
Y mandó también al segundo, y al tercero, y á todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas, diciendo: Conforme á esto hablaréis á Esaú, cuando le hallareis.
And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

Et vous lui direz : Voici même ton serviteur Jacob est derrière nous. Car il disait : J’apaiserai sa colère par ce présent qui ira devant moi, et après cela, je verrai sa face ; peut-être qu’il me regardera favorablement.
Y diréis también: He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros. Porque dijo: Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro: quizá le seré acepto.
And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”
Le présent donc alla devant lui ; mais pour lui il demeura cette nuit-là avec sa troupe.
Y pasó el presente delante de él; y él durmió aquella noche en el campamento.
So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

Il les prit donc, et leur fit passer le torrent ; il fit aussi passer tout ce qu’il avait.
Tomólos pues, y pasólos el arroyo, é hizo pasar lo que tenía.

Or Jacob étant resté seul, un homme lutta avec lui, jusqu’à ce que l’aube du jour fût levée.

Et quand cet homme vit qu’il ne le pouvait pas vaincre, il toucha l’endroit de l’emboîture de sa hanche ; ainsi l’emboîture de l’os de la hanche de Jacob fut démise quand l’homme luttait avec lui.
Y como vió que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y descoyuntóse el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba.
And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.
Et cet homme lui dit : Laisse-moi, car l’aube du jour est levée. Mais il dit : Je ne te laisserai point que tu ne m’aies béni.
Y dijo: Déjame, que raya el alba. Y él dijo: No te dejaré, si no me bendices.
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”
Et cet homme lui dit : Quel est ton nom ? Il répondit : Jacob.
Y él le dijo: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Y él respondió: Jacob.
And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
Alors il dit : Ton nom ne sera plus Jacob, mais Israël ; car tu as été le maître en luttant avec Dieu et avec les hommes, et tu as été le plus fort.
Y él dijo: No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel: porque has peleado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
Et Jacob demanda, disant : Je te prie, déclare-moi ton nom. Et il répondit : Pourquoi demandes-tu mon nom ? Et il le bénit là.
Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y él respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre? Y bendíjolo allí.
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.
Et Jacob nomma le lieu, Péniel ; car j’ai, dit-il, vu Dieu face à face, et mon âme a été délivrée.
Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar, Peniel: porque vi á Dios cara á cara, y fué librada mi alma.
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

Et le soleil se leva aussitôt qu’il eut passé Péniel, et il boitait d’une hanche.
Y salióle el sol pasado que hubo á Peniel; y cojeaba de su anca.
And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.
C’est pourquoi jusqu’à ce jour les enfants d’Israël ne mangent point du muscle se retirant, qui est à l’endroit de l’emboîture de la hanche ; parce que cet homme-là toucha l’endroit de l’emboîture de la hanche de Jacob, à l’endroit du muscle se retirant.
Por esto no comen los hijos de Israel, hasta hoy día, del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo: porque tocó á Jacob este sitio de su muslo en el tendón que se contrajo.
Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
