Luego Jacob envió mensajeros por delante para que fueran a buscar a su hermano Esaú en la tierra de Seír, en la región de Edom.
Y envió Jacob mensajeros delante de sí á Esaú su hermano, á la tierra de Seir, campo de Edom.
And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

Y les ordenó: “Esto es lo que le dirán a mi señor Esaú: ‘Esto dice tu siervo Jacob: He vivido como extranjero con Labán, y me he quedado con él hasta ahora.
Y mandóles diciendo: Así diréis á mi señor Esaú: Así dice tu siervo Jacob: Con Labán he morado, y detenídome hasta ahora;
And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:
He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.
Tengo vacas, burros, ovejas, esclavos y esclavas. Envío este mensaje a mi señor, con la esperanza de ganarme su favor’”.
Y tengo vacas, y asnos, y ovejas, y siervos y siervas; y envío á decirlo á mi señor, por hallar gracia en tus ojos.
And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.
I have cattle, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants. I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in your sight.’”
Los mensajeros regresaron a donde estaba Jacob y le dijeron: “Fuimos a ver a tu hermano Esaú. Ya viene a tu encuentro, y lo acompañan cuatrocientos hombres”.
Y los mensajeros volvieron á Jacob, diciendo: Vinimos á tu hermano Esaú, y él también viene á recibirte, y cuatrocientos hombres con él.
And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.
The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”
Jacob se llenó de mucho miedo y angustia. Entonces dividió en dos campamentos a la gente que lo acompañaba, y también a las ovejas, las vacas y los camellos.
Entonces Jacob tuvo gran temor, y angustióse; y partió el pueblo que tenía consigo, y las ovejas y las vacas y los camellos, en dos cuadrillas;
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, along with the flocks, the herds, and the camels, into two companies.
Pues pensó: “Si Esaú ataca a uno de los campamentos, el otro campamento podrá escapar”.
Y dijo: Si viniere Esaú á la una cuadrilla y la hiriere, la otra cuadrilla escapará.
And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.
He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”
Luego Jacob oró: “Dios de mi abuelo Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac; Yahvé, tú me dijiste: ‘Regresa a tu tierra y a tus parientes, y yo te haré prosperar’.
Y dijo Jacob: Dios de mi padre Abraham, y Dios de mi padre Isaac, Jehová, que me dijiste: Vuélvete á tu tierra y á tu parentela, y yo te haré bien;
And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:
Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD, who said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,’
No soy digno de la inmensa bondad y lealtad que le has mostrado a tu siervo. Cuando crucé este río Jordán, no tenía más que mi bastón, ¡y ahora he llegado a formar dos campamentos!
Menor soy que todas las misericordias, y que toda la verdad que has usado para con tu siervo; que con mi bordón pasé este Jordán, y ahora estoy sobre dos cuadrillas.
I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.

Por favor, sálvame de las manos de mi hermano Esaú, porque tengo miedo de que venga y me mate a mí, y también a las madres con sus hijos.

Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.

Tú mismo dijiste: ‘Ciertamente te haré prosperar, y haré que tu descendencia sea tan numerosa como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar’”.
Y tú has dicho: Yo te haré bien, y pondré tu simiente como la arena del mar, que no se puede contar por la multitud.
And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’”
Jacob pasó la noche allí, y de lo que tenía a la mano escogió un regalo para su hermano Esaú:
Y durmió allí aquella noche, y tomó de lo que le vino á la mano un presente para su hermano Esaú:
And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
He stayed there that night, and took from that which he had with him a present for Esau, his brother:

Puso cada manada al cuidado de sus siervos, y les dijo: “Vayan delante de mí, y dejen un buen espacio entre manada y manada”.

And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.

Al que iba al frente le ordenó: “Cuando mi hermano Esaú te encuentre y te pregunte: ‘¿De quién eres sirviente? ¿A dónde vas? ¿Y de quién son estos animales que llevas adelante?’,
Y mandó al primero, diciendo: Si Esaú mi hermano te encontrare, y te preguntare, diciendo: ¿De quién eres? ¿y adónde vas? ¿y para quién es esto que llevas delante de ti?
And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?
He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’
le contestarás: ‘Son de tu siervo Jacob. Es un regalo que le envía a mi señor Esaú. Y mire, él mismo viene detrás de nosotros’”.
Entonces dirás: Presente es de tu siervo Jacob, que envía á mi señor Esaú; y he aquí también él viene tras nosotros.
Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.
Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’”
Le dio la misma orden al segundo, al tercero y a todos los que iban detrás de las manadas: “Esto mismo le dirán a Esaú cuando se encuentren con él.
Y mandó también al segundo, y al tercero, y á todos los que iban tras aquellas manadas, diciendo: Conforme á esto hablaréis á Esaú, cuando le hallareis.
And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

Y asegúrense de decirle: ‘Su siervo Jacob viene justo detrás de nosotros’”. Porque Jacob pensaba: “Lo apaciguaré con los regalos que van por delante, y cuando lo vea cara a cara, tal vez me reciba bien”.
Y diréis también: He aquí tu siervo Jacob viene tras nosotros. Porque dijo: Apaciguaré su ira con el presente que va delante de mí, y después veré su rostro: quizá le seré acepto.
And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.
You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”
Así que los regalos se fueron por delante, mientras que él pasó esa noche en el campamento.
Y pasó el presente delante de él; y él durmió aquella noche en el campamento.
So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

Pero esa misma noche Jacob se levantó, tomó a sus dos esposas, a sus dos sirvientas y a sus once hijos, y cruzó el vado del río Jaboc.

And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

Una vez que los hizo cruzar el arroyo, hizo pasar también todo lo que tenía.

Cuando el hombre se dio cuenta de que no podía vencer a Jacob, lo golpeó en la articulación de la cadera, y la cadera de Jacob se dislocó mientras luchaba con él.
Y como vió que no podía con él, tocó en el sitio del encaje de su muslo, y descoyuntóse el muslo de Jacob mientras con él luchaba.
And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
When he saw that he didn’t prevail against him, the man touched the hollow of his thigh, and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was strained as he wrestled.
Entonces el hombre le dijo: “¡Suéltame, que ya está amaneciendo!” Pero Jacob le respondió: “No te soltaré hasta que me bendigas”.
Y dijo: Déjame, que raya el alba. Y él dijo: No te dejaré, si no me bendices.
And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”
“¿Cómo te llamas?”, le preguntó el hombre. “Jacob”, contestó él.
Y él le dijo: ¿Cuál es tu nombre? Y él respondió: Jacob.
And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.
Y el hombre le dijo: “Ya no te llamarás Jacob, sino Israel, porque has luchado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido”.
Y él dijo: No se dirá más tu nombre Jacob, sino Israel: porque has peleado con Dios y con los hombres, y has vencido.
And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”
Entonces Jacob le pidió: “Por favor, dime tu nombre”. Pero él respondió: “¿Por qué me preguntas mi nombre?” Y allí mismo lo bendijo.
Entonces Jacob le preguntó, y dijo: Declárame ahora tu nombre. Y él respondió: ¿Por qué preguntas por mi nombre? Y bendíjolo allí.
And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.
Jacob llamó a aquel lugar Peniel, pues dijo: “He visto a Dios cara a cara, y sin embargo sigo con vida”.
Y llamó Jacob el nombre de aquel lugar, Peniel: porque vi á Dios cara á cara, y fué librada mi alma.
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
Jacob called the name of the place Peniel; for he said, “I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”
El sol estaba saliendo cuando Jacob pasó por Peniel, y se fue cojeando a causa de su cadera.
Y salióle el sol pasado que hubo á Peniel; y cojeaba de su anca.
And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
The sun rose on him as he passed over Peniel, and he limped because of his thigh.
Por eso, hasta el día de hoy, los israelitas no comen el tendón que está en la articulación de la cadera, porque a Jacob lo golpearon en ese mismo tendón de la cadera.
Por esto no comen los hijos de Israel, hasta hoy día, del tendón que se contrajo, el cual está en el encaje del muslo: porque tocó á Jacob este sitio de su muslo en el tendón que se contrajo.
Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
Therefore the children of Israel don’t eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the hollow of the thigh, to this day, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew of the hip.
