Isaac prefería a Esaú porque le gustaba comer de lo que él cazaba, pero Rebeca prefería a Jacob.

And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

Un día, Jacob estaba preparando un guiso. En eso llegó Esaú del campo, agotado por el hambre,
Y guisó Jacob un potaje; y volviendo Esaú del campo cansado,

Jacob boiled stew. Esau came in from the field, and he was famished.
y le dijo a Jacob: “Por favor, dame un poco de ese guiso rojo, porque me muero de hambre”. Por eso a Esaú también se le conoció como Edom.
Dijo á Jacob: Ruégote que me des á comer de eso bermejo, pues estoy muy cansado. Por tanto fué llamado su nombre Edom.
And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom.

Esaú dijo: “Me estoy muriendo de hambre, ¿de qué me sirven a mí los derechos de primogenitura?”
Entonces dijo Esaú: He aquí yo me voy á morir; ¿para qué, pues, me servirá la primogenitura?
And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?
Esau said, “Behold, I am about to die. What good is the birthright to me?”
Jacob insistió: “Júramelo ahora mismo”. Esaú se lo juró, y de esa manera le vendió a Jacob sus derechos de primogenitura.
Y dijo Jacob: Júramelo en este día. Y él le juró, y vendió á Jacob su primogenitura.
And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
Jacob said, “Swear to me first.” He swore to him. He sold his birthright to Jacob.
Luego Jacob le dio a Esaú pan y guiso de lentejas. Esaú comió y bebió, luego se levantó y se fue. Así de poco le importaron a Esaú sus derechos de hijo mayor.
Entonces Jacob dió á Esaú pan y del guisado de las lentejas; y él comió y bebió, y levantóse, y fuése. Así menospreció Esaú la primogenitura.
