1Dann erschien ihm der HERR bei den Terebinthen Mamres, während er gerade um die Zeit der Mittagshitze am Eingang seines Zeltes saß.
2Als er nämlich aufblickte und hinsah, standen plötzlich drei Männer vor ihm. Kaum hatte er sie erblickt, da eilte er ihnen vom Eingang seines Zeltes aus entgegen, verneigte sich vor ihnen bis auf den Boden
3und sagte: »O Herr, wenn ich irgend Gnade in deinen Augen gefunden habe, so gehe doch nicht an deinem Knechte vorüber!
4Man soll euch etwas Wasser bringen, damit ihr euch die Füße waschen könnt; dann ruht euch unter dem Baume aus,
5und ich will euch etwas zu essen holen, damit ihr euch erquickt: danach mögt ihr weiterziehen; ihr seid doch nun einmal bei eurem Knecht vorübergekommen.« Sie antworteten: »Tu so, wie du gesagt hast!«
6Da eilte Abraham zu Sara ins Zelt und sagte: »Nimm schnell drei Maß Mehl, feines Mehl, knete es und backe Kuchen!«
7Dann eilte Abraham zu den Rindern, nahm ein zartes, gutes Kalb und übergab es dem Knechte; der mußte es schnell zubereiten.
8Dann holte er Sauermilch und süße Milch sowie das Kalb, das er hatte zubereiten lassen, und setzte es ihnen vor; er selbst aber bediente sie unter dem Baume, während sie aßen.
9Da fragten sie ihn: »Wo ist deine Frau Sara?« Er antwortete: »Drinnen im Zelt.«
10Da sagte jener: »Übers Jahr um diese Zeit will ich wieder zu dir kommen: dann wird deine Frau Sara einen Sohn haben.« Sara horchte aber am Zelteingang, der hinter ihm war.
11Abraham und Sara waren aber alt und hochbetagt, so daß Sara nach ihrer leiblichen Beschaffenheit keine Kinder mehr erwarten konnte.
12Darum lachte Sara in sich hinein und dachte: »Jetzt, nachdem ich verwelkt bin, sollte ich noch an Liebeslust denken? Und mein Eheherr ist ja auch ein Greis.«
13Da sagte der HERR zu Abraham: »Warum hat denn Sara gelacht und denkt: ›Sollte ich alte Frau wirklich noch Mutter werden können?‹
14Ist etwa für den HERRN irgend etwas unmöglich? Zu der genannten Zeit, übers Jahr, komme ich wieder zu dir: dann wird Sara einen Sohn haben.«
15Da leugnete Sara und sagte: »Ich habe nicht gelacht!«, denn sie fürchtete sich. Er aber entgegnete: »Doch, du hast gelacht!«
16Nunmehr brachen die drei Männer von dort auf und schauten aus nach Sodom hinab, während Abraham mit ihnen ging, um ihnen das Geleit zu geben.
17Da dachte der HERR: »Soll ich vor Abraham geheimhalten, was ich zu tun vorhabe?
18Abraham soll ja doch zu einem großen und mächtigen Volk werden, und in ihm sollen alle Völker der Erde gesegnet werden;
19denn ich habe ihn dazu ausersehen, daß er seinen Söhnen und seinem ganzen Hause nach ihm ans Herz lege, den Weg des HERRN innezuhalten, indem sie Gerechtigkeit und Recht üben, damit der HERR für Abraham alles in Erfüllung gehen lasse, was er in bezug auf ihn verheißen hat.«
20So sagte denn der HERR: »Das Geschrei über Sodom und Gomorrha ist gar groß geworden, und ihre Sünde ist wahrlich sehr schwer.
21Darum will ich hinabgehen und zusehen, ob sie wirklich ganz so gehandelt haben, wie die lauten Klagen, die zu mir gedrungen sind, von ihnen melden, oder ob es sich nicht so verhält: ich will es erkunden.«
22Hierauf wandten sich die (anderen beiden) Männer von dort weg und gingen auf Sodom zu, während Abraham noch vor dem HERRN stehenblieb.
23Da trat Abraham näher heran und sagte: »Willst du wirklich die Gerechten zugleich mit den Gottlosen wegraffen?
24Vielleicht gibt es fünfzig Gerechte innerhalb der Stadt: willst du die wirklich umkommen lassen und nicht lieber dem Orte vergeben um der fünfzig Gerechten willen, die in ihm sind?
25Fern sei es von dir, so zu handeln, die Gerechten zusammen mit den Gottlosen ums Leben zu bringen, so daß es den Gerechten ebenso ergeht wie den Gottlosen: das sei fern von dir! Der Richter der ganzen Erde muß doch Gerechtigkeit üben!«
26Da antwortete der HERR: »Wenn ich in Sodom fünfzig Gerechte innerhalb der Stadt finden sollte, so will ich dem ganzen Ort um ihretwillen vergeben.«
27Darauf nahm Abraham wieder das Wort und sagte: »Ach siehe, ich habe es gewagt, zu dem Allherrn zu reden, obgleich ich nur Staub und Asche bin.
28Vielleicht fehlen an den fünfzig Gerechten noch fünf: willst du da wegen dieser fünf die ganze Stadt vernichten?« Er antwortete: »Nein, ich will sie nicht vernichten, wenn ich dort fünfundvierzig finde.«
29Darauf fuhr Abraham fort, ihn nochmals anzureden, und sagte: »Vielleicht finden sich deren dort nur vierzig.« Jener erwiderte: »Ich will ihnen um der vierzig willen nichts tun.«
30Abraham sagte: »Möge doch der Allherr nicht zürnen, wenn ich nochmals rede: vielleicht finden sich dort nur dreißig.« Er antwortete: »Ich will ihnen nichts tun, wenn ich dort dreißig finde.«
31Er sagte weiter: »Siehe doch, ich habe es gewagt, zu dem Allherrn zu reden: vielleicht finden sich dort nur zwanzig.« Er antwortete: »Ich will sie schon um der zwanzig willen nicht vernichten.«
32Da sagte er: »Möge doch der Allherr nicht zürnen, wenn ich noch dies eine Mal rede: vielleicht finden sich dort nur zehn.« Er erwiderte: »Ich will sie schon um der zehn willen nicht vernichten.«
33Hierauf ging der HERR weg, nachdem er das Gespräch mit Abraham beendet hatte; Abraham aber kehrte nach Hause zurück.

1Y APARECIÓLE Jehová en el valle de Mamre, estando él sentado á la puerta de su tienda en el calor del día.
2Y alzó sus ojos y miró, y he aquí tres varones que estaban junto á él: y cuando los vió, salió corriendo de la puerta de su tienda á recibirlos, é inclinóse hacia la tierra,
3Y dijo: Señor, si ahora he hallado gracia en tus ojos, ruégote que no pases de tu siervo.
4Que se traiga ahora un poco de agua, y lavad vuestros pies; y recostaos debajo de un árbol,
5Y traeré un bocado de pan, y sustentad vuestro corazón; después pasaréis: porque por eso habéis pasado cerca de vuestro siervo. Y ellos dijeron: Haz así como has dicho.
6Entonces Abraham fué de priesa á la tienda á Sara, y le dijo: Toma presto tres medidas de flor de harina, amasa y haz panes cocidos debajo del rescoldo.
7Y corrió Abraham á las vacas, y tomó un becerro tierno y bueno, y diólo al mozo, y dióse éste priesa á aderezarlo.
8Tomó también manteca y leche, y el becerro que había aderezado, y púsolo delante de ellos; y él estaba junto á ellos debajo del árbol; y comieron.
9Y le dijeron: ¿Dónde está Sara tu mujer? Y él respondió: Aquí en la tienda.
10Entonces dijo: De cierto volveré á ti según el tiempo de la vida, y he aquí, tendrá un hijo Sara tu mujer. Y Sara escuchaba á la puerta de la tienda, que estaba detrás de él.
11Y Abraham y Sara eran viejos, entrados en días: á Sara había cesado ya la costumbre de las mujeres.
12Rióse, pues, Sara entre sí, diciendo: ¿Después que he envejecido tendré deleite, siendo también mi señor ya viejo?
13Entonces Jehová dijo á Abraham: ¿Por qué se ha reído Sara diciendo: Será cierto que he de parir siendo ya vieja?
14¿Hay para Dios alguna cosa difícil? Al tiempo señalado volveré á ti, según el tiempo de la vida, y Sara tendrá un hijo.
15Entonces Sara negó diciendo: No me reí; porque tuvo miedo. Y él dijo: No es así, sino que te has reído.
16Y los varones se levantaron de allí, y miraron hacia Sodoma: y Abraham iba con ellos acompañándolos.
17Y Jehová dijo: ¿Encubriré yo á Abraham lo que voy á hacer,
18Habiendo de ser Abraham en una nación grande y fuerte, y habiendo de ser benditas en él todas las gentes de la tierra?
19Porque yo lo he conocido, sé que mandará á sus hijos y á su casa después de sí, que guarden el camino de Jehová, haciendo justicia y juicio, para que haga venir Jehová sobre Abraham lo que ha hablado acerca de él.
20Entonces Jehová le dijo: Por cuanto el clamor de Sodoma y Gomorra se aumenta más y más, y el pecado de ellos se ha agravado en extremo,
21Descenderé ahora, y veré si han consumado su obra según el clamor que ha venido hasta mí; y si no, saberlo he.
22Y apartáronse de allí los varones, y fueron hacia Sodoma: mas Abraham estaba aún delante de Jehová.
23Y acercóse Abraham y dijo: ¿Destruirás también al justo con el impío?
24Quizá hay cincuenta justos dentro de la ciudad: ¿destruirás también y no perdonarás al lugar por cincuenta justos que estén dentro de él?
25Lejos de ti el hacer tal, que hagas morir al justo con el impío, y que sea el justo tratado como el impío; nunca tal hagas. El juez de toda la tierra, ¿no ha de hacer lo que es justo?
26Entonces respondió Jehová: Si hallare en Sodoma cincuenta justos dentro de la ciudad, perdonaré á todo este lugar por amor de ellos.
27Y Abraham replicó y dijo: He aquí ahora que he comenzado á hablar á mi Señor, aunque soy polvo y ceniza:
28Quizá faltarán de cincuenta justos cinco: ¿destruirás por aquellos cinco toda la ciudad? Y dijo: No la destruiré, si hallare allí cuarenta y cinco.
29Y volvió á hablarle, y dijo: Quizá se hallarán allí cuarenta. Y respondió: No lo haré por amor de los cuarenta.
30Y dijo: No se enoje ahora mi Señor, si hablare: quizá se hallarán allí treinta. Y respondió: No lo haré si hallare allí treinta.
31Y dijo: He aquí ahora que he emprendido el hablar á mi Señor: quizá se hallarán allí veinte. No la destruiré, respondió, por amor de los veinte.
32Y volvió á decir: No se enoje ahora mi Señor, si hablare solamente una vez: quizá se hallarán allí diez. No la destruiré, respondió, por amor de los diez.
33Y fuése Jehová, luego que acabó de hablar á Abraham: y Abraham se volvió á su lugar.

1And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
2And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,
3And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
4Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:
5And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.
6And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.
7And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it.
8And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.
9And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.
10And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.
11Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.
12Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?
13And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old?
14Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.
15Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.
16And the men rose up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.
17And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
18Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
19For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
20And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;
21I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
22And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.
23And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
24Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?
25That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
26And the LORD said, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes.
27And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes:
28Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.
29And he spake unto him yet again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty’s sake.
30And he said unto him, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
31And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty’s sake.
32And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.
33And the LORD went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
World English Bible
1The LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day.
2He lifted up his eyes and looked, and saw that three men stood near him. When he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,
3and said, “My lord, if now I have found favor in your sight, please don’t go away from your servant.
4Now let a little water be fetched, wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
5I will get a piece of bread so you can refresh your heart. After that you may go your way, now that you have come to your servant.” They said, “Very well, do as you have said.”
6Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Quickly prepare three seahs of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.”
7Abraham ran to the herd, and fetched a tender and good calf, and gave it to the servant. He hurried to dress it.
8He took butter, milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them. He stood by them under the tree, and they ate.
9They asked him, “Where is Sarah, your wife?” He said, “There, in the tent.”
10He said, “I will certainly return to you at about this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife will have a son.” Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.
11Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age. Sarah had passed the age of childbearing.
12Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old will I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”
13The LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Will I really bear a child when I am old?’
14Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the set time I will return to you, when the season comes around, and Sarah will have a son.”
15Then Sarah denied it, saying, “I didn’t laugh,” for she was afraid. He said, “No, but you did laugh.”
16The men rose up from there, and looked toward Sodom. Abraham went with them to see them on their way.
17The LORD said, “Will I hide from Abraham what I do,
18since Abraham will surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth will be blessed in him?
19For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that the LORD may bring on Abraham that which he has spoken of him.”
20The LORD said, “Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous,
21I will go down now, and see whether their deeds are as bad as the reports which have come to me. If not, I will know.”
22The men turned from there, and went toward Sodom, but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.
23Abraham came near, and said, “Will you consume the righteous with the wicked?
24What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it?
25May it be far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn’t the Judge of all the earth do right?”
26The LORD said, “If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
27Abraham answered, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, although I am dust and ashes.
28What if there will lack five of the fifty righteous? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” He said, “I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”
29He spoke to him yet again, and said, “What if there are forty found there?” He said, “I will not do it for the forty’s sake.”
30He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?” He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
31He said, “See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.”
32He said, “Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He said, “I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.”
33The LORD went his way as soon as he had finished communing with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.
