1Or, je dis qu'aussi longtemps que l'héritier est enfant, il ne diffère en rien de l'esclave, quoiqu'il soit seigneur de tout;
2Mais il est sous des tuteurs et des curateurs jusqu'au temps marqué par le père.
3Nous aussi de même, lorsque nous étions enfants, nous étions sous l'esclavage des rudiments du monde.
4Mais, lorsque les temps ont été accomplis, Dieu a envoyé son Fils, né d'une femme, né sous la loi,
5Afin qu'il rachetât ceux qui étaient sous la loi, afin que nous reçussions l'adoption.
6Et, parce que vous êtes fils, Dieu a envoyé dans vos cœurs l'Esprit de son Fils, lequel crie: Abba, ô Père!
7C'est pourquoi tu n'es plus esclave, mais fils, et si tu es fils, tu es aussi héritier de Dieu par Christ.
8Mais alors, à la vérité, ne connaissant point Dieu, vous serviez des dieux qui n'en sont point de leur nature.
9Et maintenant que vous avez connu Dieu, ou plutôt que vous avez été connus de Dieu, comment retournez-vous encore à ces faibles et misérables rudiments, auxquels vous voulez vous assujettir de nouveau?
10Vous observez les jours, les mois, les temps et les années.
11Je crains pour vous que je n'aie travaillé en vain à votre égard.
12Soyez comme moi, car moi aussi j'ai été comme vous; je vous en prie, frères.
13Vous ne m'avez fait aucun tort; et vous savez que je vous ai annoncé ci-devant l'Évangile dans l'infirmité de la chair;
14Et vous ne m'avez point méprisé ni rejeté, à cause de ces épreuves que j'ai dans ma chair; mais vous m'avez reçu comme un ange de Dieu, et comme Jésus-Christ.
15Qu'est-ce donc qui faisait alors votre bonheur? Car je vous rends témoignage, que s'il eût été possible, vous vous fussiez arraché les yeux pour me les donner.
16Suis-je donc devenu votre ennemi, en vous disant la vérité?
17Ils sont zélés pour vous; mais non loyalement: au contraire, ils veulent vous détacher de nous, afin que vous soyez zélés pour eux.
18Or, il est bon d'être zélé pour le bien en tout temps, et non pas seulement lorsque je suis présent parmi vous.
19Mes petits enfants, pour qui je sens de nouveau les douleurs de l'enfantement, jusqu'à ce que Christ soit formé en vous;
20Je voudrais être maintenant avec vous, et changer de langage; car je suis dans une grande inquiétude à votre sujet.
21Dites-moi, vous qui voulez être sous la loi, n'entendez-vous point la loi?
22Car il est écrit, qu'Abraham eut deux fils; l'un de l'esclave, et l'autre de la femme libre.
23Mais celui de l'esclave naquit selon la chair; et celui de la femme libre naquit en vertu de la promesse.
24Ces choses sont allégoriques; car ces deux femmes sont deux alliances, l'une du mont Sina, qui enfante des esclaves, et c'est Agar.
25Car Agar signifie le mont Sina, en Arabie, et elle correspond à la Jérusalem d'à présent, qui est, en effet, esclave avec ses enfants;
26Mais la Jérusalem d'en haut est libre, et c'est elle qui est la mère de nous tous.
27Car il est écrit: Réjouis-toi, stérile, toi qui n'enfantais point, éclate et pousse des cris, toi qui n'as pas été en travail d'enfant; car les enfants de la délaissée seront plus nombreux que ceux de la femme qui avait l'époux.
28Pour nous, frères, nous sommes les enfants de la promesse, de même qu'Isaac.
29Mais, comme alors, celui qui était né selon la chair persécutait celui qui était né selon l'Esprit, il en est de même maintenant.
30Mais que dit l'Écriture? Chasse l'esclave et son fils; car le fils de l'esclave ne sera point héritier avec le fils de la femme libre.
31Or, frères, nous sommes les enfants, non de l'esclave, mais de la femme libre.

1TAMBIÉN digo: Entre tanto que el heredero es niño, en nada difiere del siervo, aunque es señor de todo;
2Mas está debajo de tutores y curadores hasta el tiempo señalado por el padre.
3Así también nosotros, cuando éramos niños, éramos siervos bajo los rudimentos del mundo.
4Mas venido el cumplimiento del tiempo, Dios envió su Hijo, hecho de mujer, hecho súbdito á la ley,
5Para que redimiese á los que estaban debajo de la ley, á fin de que recibiésemos la adopción de hijos.
6Y por cuanto sois hijos, Dios envió el Espíritu de su Hijo en vuestros corazones, el cual clama: Abba, Padre.
7Así que ya no eres más siervo, sino hijo; y si hijo, también heredero de Dios por Cristo.
8Antes, en otro tiempo, no conociendo á Dios, servíais á los que por naturaleza no son dioses:
9Mas ahora, habiendo conocido á Dios, ó más bien, siendo conocidos de Dios, ¿cómo os volvéis de nuevo á los flacos y pobres rudimentos, en los cuales queréis volver á servir?
10Guardáis los días, y los meses, y los tiempos, y los años.
11Temo de vosotros, que no haya trabajado en vano en vosotros.
12Hermanos, os ruego, sed como yo, porque yo soy como vosotros: ningún agravio me habéis hecho.
13Que vosotros sabéis que por flaqueza de carne os anuncié el evangelio al principio:
14Y no desechasteis ni menospreciasteis mi tentación que estaba en mi carne: antes me recibisteis como á un ángel de Dios, como á Cristo Jesús.
15¿Dónde está pues vuestra bienaventuranza? porque yo os doy testimonio que si se pudiera hacer, os hubierais sacado vuestros ojos para dármelos.
16¿Heme pues hecho vuestro enemigo, diciéndoos la verdad?
17Tienen celos de vosotros, pero no bien: antes os quieren echar fuera para que vosotros los celéis á ellos.
18Bueno es ser celosos en bien siempre; y no solamente cuando estoy presente con vosotros.
19Hijitos míos, que vuelvo otra vez á estar de parto de vosotros, hasta que Cristo sea formado en vosotros;
20Querría cierto estar ahora con vosotros, y mudar mi voz; porque estoy perplejo en cuanto á vosotros.
21Decidme, los que queréis estar debajo de la ley, ¿no habéis oído la ley?
22Porque escrito está que Abraham tuvo dos hijos; uno de la sierva, el otro de la libre.
23Mas el de la sierva nació según la carne; pero el de la libre nació por la promesa.
24Las cuales cosas son dichas por alegoría: porque estas mujeres son los dos pactos; el uno ciertamente del monte Sinaí, el cual engendró para servidumbre, que es Agar.
25Porque Agar ó Sinaí es un monte de Arabia, el cual es conjunto á la que ahora es Jerusalem, la cual sirve con sus hijos.
26Mas la Jerusalem de arriba libre es; la cual es la madre de todos nosotros.
27Porque está escrito: Alégrate, estéril, que no pares: prorrumpe y clama, la que no estás de parto; porque más son los hijos de la dejada, que de la que tiene marido.
28Así que, hermanos, nosotros como Isaac somos hijos de la promesa.
29Empero como entonces el que era engendrado según la carne, perseguía al que había nacido según el Espíritu, así también ahora.
30Mas ¿qué dice la Escritura? Echa fuera á la sierva y á su hijo; porque no será heredero el hijo de la sierva con el hijo de la libre.
31De manera, hermanos, que no somos hijos de la sierva, mas de la libre.

1Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;
2But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
3Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world:
4But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
8Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
9But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
10Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
11I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
12Brethren, I beseech you, be as I am; for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.
13Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.
14And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
15Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
16Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?
17They zealously affect you, but not well; yea, they would exclude you, that ye might affect them.
18But it is good to be zealously affected always in a good thing, and not only when I am present with you.
19My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
20I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
21Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?
22For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman.
23But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise.
24Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar.
25For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
26But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
27For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
28Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
29But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
30Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
31So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.

1But I say that so long as the heir is a child, he is no different from a bondservant, though he is lord of all,
2but is under guardians and stewards until the day appointed by the father.
3So we also, when we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental principles of the world.
4But when the fullness of the time came, God sent out his Son, born to a woman, born under the law,
5that he might redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as children.
6And because you are children, God sent out the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, “Abba, Father!”
7So you are no longer a bondservant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
8However at that time, not knowing God, you were in bondage to those who by nature are not gods.
9But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, why do you turn back again to the weak and miserable elemental principles, to which you desire to be in bondage all over again?
10You observe days, months, seasons, and years.
11I am afraid for you, that I might have wasted my labor for you.
12I beg you, brothers, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong,
13but you know that because of weakness in the flesh I preached the Good News to you the first time.
14That which was a temptation to you in my flesh, you didn’t despise nor reject; but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
15What was the blessing you enjoyed? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.
16So then, have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?
17They zealously seek you in no good way. No, they desire to alienate you, that you may seek them.
18But it is always good to be zealous in a good cause, and not only when I am present with you.
19My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ is formed in you—
20but I could wish to be present with you now, and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.
21Tell me, you that desire to be under the law, don’t you listen to the law?
22For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the servant, and one by the free woman.
23However, the son by the servant was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise.
24These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.
25For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to the Jerusalem that exists now, for she is in bondage with her children.
26But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
27For it is written, “Rejoice, you barren who don’t bear. Break out and shout, you who don’t travail. For the desolate women have more children than her who has a husband.”
28Now we, brothers, as Isaac was, are children of promise.
29But as then, he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.
30However, what does the Scripture say? “Throw out the servant and her son, for the son of the servant will not inherit with the son of the free woman.”
31So then, brothers, we are not children of a servant, but of the free woman.
