1Les adversaires de Juda et de Benjamin, ayant appris que les Israélites revenus de l'exil bâtissaient un sanctuaire à l'Eternel, Dieu d'Israël,
2se présentèrent à Zorobabel et aux chefs des familles et leur dirent: "Nous voulons bâtir de concert avec vous, car, comme vous, nous recherchons votre Dieu, et c'est à lui que nous offrons des sacrifices depuis les jours d'Essar-Haddôn, roi d'Assyrie, qui nous a transportés ici."
3Zorobabel, Yêchoua et les autres chefs des familles d'Israël leur répondirent: "Il ne vous appartient pas de construire avec nous une maison à notre Dieu: nous seuls, tant que nous sommes, nous voulons faire la construction en l'honneur de l'Eternel, Dieu d'Israël, ainsi que nous l'a ordonné Cyrus, roi de Perse."
4Alors la population du pays s'appliqua à décourager les habitants de la Judée et à les détourner de bâtir en les intimidant.
5De plus, ils soudoyaient contre eux des personnages influents pour entraver leur projet, tant que vécut Cyrus, roi de Perse, et jusqu'au règne de Darius, roi de Perse.
6Sous le règne d'Assuérus, dès le début de son règne, ils envoyèrent une accusation écrite contre les habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem.
7Puis, au temps d'Artahchasta, Bichlâm, Mithridate, Tabeêl et consorts écrivirent à Artahchasta, roi de Perse, et la teneur de la missive était écrite en caractères araméens et traduite en araméen.
8Rehoum, le conseiller, et Chimchaï, le scribe, écrivirent au roi Artahchasta une lettre au sujet de Jérusalem, conçue en ces termes:
9"A cette heure, Rehoum, le conseiller, Chimchaï, le scribe, et consorts; les Dinéens, Afarsatkéens, Tarpeléens, Afarséens, Arkavéens, Babyloniens, Chouchankéens, Déhavéens et Elamites,
10et les autres peuplades que Asnappar le grand et le glorieux a déportés et établis dans la ville de Samarie et d'autres territoires en deçà du fleuve, et ainsi de suite.
11Voici le contenu de la lettre qu'ils ont envoyée au roi Artahchasta: Tes serviteurs, les gens des territoires situés en deçà du fleuve et ainsi de suite.
12Que le roi sache que les Judéens qui sont partis de chez toi sont arrivés près de chez nous à Jérusalem. Ils rebâtissent cette ville rebelle et mauvaise, réparent les murailles et creusent les fondations.
13Que le roi sache donc que, si cette ville est rebâtie et les murailles réparées, ils ne paieront plus ni tribut, ni impôts, ni péage, ce qui portera préjudice au trésor royal.
14Puisque donc nous mangeons le sel du palais, et qu'il ne nous sied pas d'être témoins du tort fait au roi, nous mandons ceci au roi et l'en instruisons,
15aux seules fins qu'on fasse des recherches dans les archives de tes ancêtres. Tu trouveras dans ces archives et t'assureras que cette cité est une cité rebelle et funeste aux rois et aux provinces, qu'on y a fomenté des révoltes dès les temps antiques, ce qui a causé la destruction de cette cité.
16Nous faisons savoir au roi que, si cette cité est rebâtie et ses murailles rétablies, la conséquence sera que tu n'auras plus de part au pays en deçà du fleuve."
17Le roi fit parvenir la notification suivante à Rehoum, le conseiller, Chimchaï, le scribe, et consorts, établis à Samarie et dans les autres territoires en deçà du fleuve: "Salut, etc!
18La missive que vous nous avez envoyée a été lue distinctement devant moi.
19Sur l'ordre que j'en ai donné, on a fait des recherches, et on a constaté que cette cité, dès les temps antiques, s'est insurgée contre les rois, et qu'on y a fomenté des révoltes et des séditions.
20Des rois puissants ont régné à Jérusalem, qui étendaient leur domination sur toute la contrée de l'autre côté du fleuve, et à qui l'on payait des tributs, des impôts et des péages.
21Prenez donc des dispositions pour paralyser ces gens, afin que cette ville ne soit pas rebâtie jusqu'à nouvel ordre de ma part.
22Et soyez sur vos gardes pour éviter toute négligence en cette affaire: pourquoi laisser s'aggraver le mal au détriment des rois?"
23Aussitôt que le contenu de la lettre d'Artahchasta eut été lu devant Rehoum, Chimchaï, le scribe, et consorts, ils se rendirent en toute hâte à Jérusalem auprès des Judéens et les réduisirent à l'inaction, en employant la force et la violence.
24Dès lors, les travaux du temple de Dieu, à Jérusalem, furent arrêtés jusqu'à la deuxième année du règne de Darius, roi de Perse.

1Y OYENDO los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín, que los venidos de la cautividad edificaban el templo de Jehová Dios de Israel,
2Llegáronse á Zorobabel, y á los cabezas de los padres, y dijéronles: Edificaremos con vosotros, porque como vosotros buscaremos á vuestro Dios, y á él sacrificamos desde los días de Esar-haddón rey de Asiria, que nos hizo subir aquí.
3Y díjoles Zorobabel, y Jesuá, y los demás cabezas de los padres de Israel: No nos conviene edificar con vosotros casa á nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros solos la edificaremos á Jehová Dios de Israel, como nos mandó el rey Ciro, rey de Persia.
4Mas el pueblo de la tierra debilitaba las manos del pueblo de Judá, y los arredraban de edificar.
5Cohecharon además contra ellos consejeros para disipar su consejo, todo el tiempo de Ciro rey de Persia, y hasta el reinado de Darío rey de Persia.
6Y en el reinado de Assuero, en el principio de su reinado, escribieron acusaciones contra los moradores de Judá y de Jerusalem.
7Y en días de Artajerjes, Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel, y los demás sus compañeros, escribieron á Artajerjes rey de Persia; y la escritura de la carta estaba hecha en siriaco, y declarada en siriaco.
8Rehum canciller, y Simsai secretario, escribieron una carta contra Jerusalem al rey Artajerjes, como se sigue.
9Entonces Rehum canciller, y Simsai secretario, y los demás sus compañeros, los Dineos, y los Apharsathachêos, Thepharleos, Apharseos, los Erchûeos, los Babilonios, Susanchêos, Dieveos, y Elamitas;
10Y los demás pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnappar trasportó, é hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria, y los demás de la otra parte del río, etcétera, escribieron.
11Este es el traslado de la carta que enviaron: Al rey Artajerjes: Tus siervos de la otra parte del río, etcétera.
12Sea notorio al rey, que los Judíos que subieron de ti á nosotros, vinieron á Jerusalem; y edifican la ciudad rebelde y mala, y han erigido los muros; y compuesto los fundamentos.
13Ahora, notorio sea al rey, que si aquella ciudad fuere reedificada, y los muros fueren establecidos, el tributo, pecho, y rentas no darán, y el catastro de lo reyes será menoscabado.
14Ya pues que estamos mantenidos de palacio, no nos es justo ver el menosprecio del rey: hemos enviado por tanto, y hécholo saber al rey,
15Para que busque en el libro de las historias de nuestros padres; y hallarás en el libro de las historias, y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, y perjudicial á los reyes y á las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo forman en medio de ella rebeliones; por lo que esta ciudad fué destruída.
16Hacemos saber al rey, que si esta ciudad fuere edificada, y erigidos sus muros, la parte allá del río no será tuya.
17El rey envió esta respuesta á Rehum canciller, y á Simsai secretario, y á los demás sus compañeros que habitan en Samaria, y á los demás de la parte allá del río: Paz, etc.
18La carta que nos enviasteis claramente fué leída delante de mí.
19Y por mí fué dado mandamiento, y buscaron, y hallaron que aquella ciudad de tiempo antiguo se levanta contra los reyes, y se rebela, y se forma en ella sedición:
20Y que reyes fuertes hubo en Jerusalem, quienes señorearon en todo lo que está á la parte allá del río; y que tributo, y pecho, y rentas se les daba.
21Ahora pues dad orden que cesen aquellos hombres, y no sea esa ciudad edificada, hasta que por mí sea dado mandamiento.
22Y mirad bien que no hagáis error en esto: ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño para perjuicio de los reyes?
23Entonces, cuando el traslado de la carta del rey Artajerjes fué leído delante de Rehum, y de Simsai secretario, y sus compañeros, fueron prestamente á Jerusalem á los Judíos, é hiciéronles cesar con poder y fuerza.
24Cesó entonces la obra de la casa de Dios, la cual estaba en Jerusalem: y cesó hasta el año segundo del reinado de Darío rey de Persia.

1Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;
2Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.
3But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.
4Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,
5And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
6And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.
7And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
8Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
9Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,
10And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
11This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
12Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
13Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.
14Now because we have maintenance from the king’s palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king’s dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
15That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.
16We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.
17Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.
18The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
19And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.
20There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
21Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.
22Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
23Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
24Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

2they came near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers’ households, and said to them, “Let us build with you, for we seek your God as you do; and we have been sacrificing to him since the days of Esar Haddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here.”
3But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ households of Israel said to them, “You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to the LORD, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”

12Be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from you have come to us to Jerusalem. They are building the rebellious and bad city, and have finished the walls and repaired the foundations.
13Be it known now to the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful to the kings.
14Now because we eat the salt of the palace and it is not appropriate for us to see the king’s dishonor, therefore we have sent and informed the king,
15that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will see in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have started rebellions within it in the past. That is why this city was destroyed.
16We inform the king that if this city is built and the walls finished, then you will have no possession beyond the River.
17Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions who live in Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River: Peace.
18The letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me.
19I decreed, and search has been made, and it was found that this city has made insurrection against kings in the past, and that rebellion and revolts have been made in it.
20There have also been mighty kings over Jerusalem who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll was paid to them.
21Make a decree now to cause these men to cease, and that this city not be built until a decree is made by me.
22Be careful that you not be slack doing so. Why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?
23Then when the copy of King Artaxerxes’ letter was read before Rehum, Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force of arms.
24Then work stopped on God’s house which is at Jerusalem. It stopped until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
