1And the word of Yahweh came unto me saying:
2Son of man Speak unto the sons of thy people and thou shalt say unto them, A land—when I bring upon it a sword, And the people of the land shall take one man out of their whole number, and appoint him for them, as watchman;
3And he shall see the sword coming upon the land,—and shall blow with the horn and warn the people
4Then as for him who really heard the sound of the horn and took not warning, The sword indeed hath come and taken him away,— His blood, upon his own head shall remain:—
5The sound of the horn, he heard, but took not warning, His blood, upon himself shall remain,— Whereas had he taken warning, his own soul, he should have delivered.
6But as for the watchman-When he seeth the sword coming. And hath not blown with the horn. And the people, have not been warned, And the sword, hath come and taken away from among them any person he, for his iniquity, hath been taken away, But his blood at the hand of the watchman will I require.
7Thou therefore Son of man, A watchman, have I appointed thee, to the house of Israel, So then thou shalt hear at my mouth a message, and shalt warn them from me.
8When I say to the lawless man O lawless man thou shalt surely die, And thou have not spoken to warn the lawless man from his way He the lawless man for his iniquity shall die, But his blood- at thy hand- will I demand.
9But as for thyself When thou hast warned a lawless man from his way, to turn therefrom, And he hath not turned from his way He, for his own iniquity shall die, But thou hast delivered thine own life,
10Thou, therefore, Son of man, Say unto the house of Israel, Thus, have ye spoken saying: When our transgressions and our sins are upon us,—and for them, we are melting away How then can we live?
11Say unto them, As I live, Declareth My Lord Yahweh, Surely, I can take no pleasure in the death of the lawless man, But that the lawless man turn from his way, and live,- Turn ye, turn ye, from your wicked ways, For wherefore should ye die. O house of Israel?
12Thou, therefore, Son of man Say unto the sons of thy people— The righteousness of the righteous man, shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression, And as for the lawlessness of the lawless man, He shall not stumble thereby, in the day of his return from his lawlessness,- Nor shall the righteous man be able to live thereby, in the day of his sin.
13When I say of the righteous man He shall surely live but he hath trusted in his righteousness and committed perversity None of his righteous deeds shall be mentioned, But by his perversity which he hath committed—thereby, shall he die.
14And when I say to the lawless man Thou shalt surely die, but he shall turn from his sin, and do justice and righteousness:
15The debt-pledge, the lawless man shall restore Plunder, shall pay back, In the statutes of life, hath walked, so as not to commit perversity. He shall surely live he shall not die:—
16None of his sins which he hath committed shall be called to mind against him,— Justice and righteousness, hath he done He shall surely live.
17And can the sons of thy people say, The way of The Lord will not be equal? Nay! but as for them, their way will not be equal!
18When the righteous man shall turn from his righteousness and commit perversity Then shall he die for them;
19But when the lawless man shall turn from his lawlessness, and do justice and righteousness Upon them, shall he live.
20And can ye then say, The way of The Lord will not be equal? Every man—according to his own ways so will I judge you O house of Israel?
21And it came to pass in the twelfth year, in the tenth month on the fifth of the month of our exile, that there came unto me one that had escaped out of Jerusalem saying. Smitten is the city!
22Now the hand of Yahweh, had come unto me in the evening, before the coming of him who had escaped, and he had opened my mouth, by the time that he came to me in the morning, —so my mouth, was opened, and I was dumb no longer.
23Then came the word of Yahweh unto me saying:
24Son of man These inhabitants of waste places on the soil of Israel are saying thus, One, was Abraham. Yet he inherited the land,- But, we, are many, To us, is the land given as an inheritance.
25Wherefore say unto them Thus, saith My Lord. Yahweh. -With the blood, ye do eat. And your eyes, ye do lift up unto your manufactured gods. And blood, ye do shed; And the land, shall ye inherit?
26Ye men have taken your stand by your sword. Ye women have wrought abomination, And every man—with the wife of his neighbour, have ye defiled yourselves; And the land, shall ye inherit?
27Thus shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith My Lord Yahweh, As I live, surely, they who are in the waste places by the sword, shall fall, And him who is on the face of the field to the wild beast, have I given to be devoured,- And they who are in the mountain holds and in the pits :by pestilence, shall die;
28And I will make the land a desolation and an astonishment, So shall be made to cease the pride of her strength,- And the mountains of Israel shall be too desolate for any to pass through.
29So shall they know that I, am Yahweh,— When I make the land a desolation and an astonishment, because of all their abominations which they have committed.
30Thou therefore Son of man, the sons of thy people who are talking against thee Near the walls and in the entrances of the houses, are speaking one with another, every man with his brother saying. Come in we pray you and heat, what is the word that is coming forth from Yahweh;
31That they may come unto thee as people do come And may sit before thee as my people, And they will hear thy words, But, the words themselves, will they not do,— though fond with their mouths, they seem to be, After their unjust gain, their heart is going.
32And lo! thou art to them— As a bewitching song, Of one with a beautiful voice. And skilfully touching the strings, —So will they hear thy words, And yet be going to do none of them.
33But when it cometh Lo! it is coming, Then shall they know that a prophet hath been in their midst.

1Y FUÉ á mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:
2Hijo del hombre, habla á los hijos de tu pueblo, y diles: Cuando trajere yo espada sobre la tierra, y el pueblo de la tierra tomare un hombre de sus términos, y se lo pusiere por atalaya,
3Y él viere venir la espada sobre la tierra, y tocare corneta, y avisare al pueblo;
4Cualquiera que oyere el sonido de la corneta, y no se apercibiere, y viniendo la espada lo tomare, su sangre será sobre su cabeza.
5El sonido de la corneta oyó, y no se apercibió; su sangre será sobre él: mas el que se apercibiere, librará su vida.
6Pero si el atalaya viere venir la espada, y no tocare la corneta, y el pueblo no se apercibiere, y viniendo la espada, tomare de él alguno; él por causa de su pecado fué tomado, mas demandaré su sangre de mano del atalaya.
7Tú pues, hijo del hombre, yo te he puesto por atalaya á la casa de Israel, y oirás la palabra de mi boca, y los apercibirás de mi parte.
8Diciendo yo al impío: Impío, de cierto morirás; si tú no hablares para que se guarde el impío de su camino, el impío morirá por su pecado, mas su sangre yo la demandaré de tu mano.
9Y si tú avisares al impío de su camino para que de él se aparte, y él no se apartare de su camino, por su pecado morirá él, y tú libraste tu vida.
10Tú pues, hijo del hombre, di á la casa de Israel: Vosotros habéis hablado así, diciendo: Nuestras rebeliones y nuestros pecados están sobre nosotros, y á causa de ellos somos consumidos: ¿cómo pues viviremos?
11Diles: Vivo yo, dice el Señor Jehová, que no quiero la muerte del impío, sino que se torne el impío de su camino, y que viva. Volveos, volveos de vuestros malos caminos: ¿y por qué moriréis, oh casa de Israel?
12Y tú, hijo del hombre, di á los hijos de tu pueblo: La justicia del justo no lo librará el día que se rebelare; y la impiedad del impío no le será estorbo el día que se volviere de su impiedad; y el justo no podrá vivir por su justicia el día que pecare.
13Diciendo yo al justo, De cierto vivirá, y él confiado en su justicia hiciere iniquidad, todas sus justicias no vendrán en memoria, sino que morirá por su iniquidad que hizo.
14Y diciendo yo al impío: De cierto morirás; si él se volviere de su pecado, é hiciere juicio y justicia,
15Si el impío restituyere la prenda, devolviere lo que hubiere robado, caminare en las ordenanzas de la vida, no haciendo iniquidad, vivirá ciertamente y no morirá.
16No se le recordará ninguno de sus pecados que había cometido: hizo juicio y justicia; vivirá ciertamente.
17Luego dirán los hijos de tu pueblo: No es recta la vía del Señor: la vía de ellos es la que no es recta.
18Cuando el justo se apartare de su justicia, é hiciere iniquidad, morirá por ello.
19Y cuando el impío se apartare de su impiedad, é hiciere juicio y justicia, vivirá por ello.
20Y dijisteis: No es recta la vía del Señor. Yo os juzgaré, oh casa de Israel, á cada uno conforme á sus caminos.
21Y aconteció en el año duodécimo de nuestro cautiverio, en el mes décimo, á los cinco del mes, que vino á mí un escapado de Jerusalem, diciendo: La ciudad ha sido herida.
22Y la mano de Jehová había sido sobre mí la tarde antes que el escapado viniese, y había abierto mi boca, hasta que vino á mí por la mañana; y abrió mi boca, y no más estuve callado.
23Y fué á mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:
24Hijo del hombre, los que habitan aquellos desiertos en la tierra de Israel, hablando dicen: Abraham era uno, y poseyó la tierra: pues nosotros somos muchos; á nosotros es dada la tierra en posesión.
25Por tanto, diles: Así ha dicho el Señor Jehová: ¿Con sangre comeréis, y á vuestros ídolos alzaréis vuestros ojos, y sangre derramaréis, y poseeréis vosotros la tierra?
26Estuvisteis sobre vuestras espadas, hicisteis abominación, y contaminasteis cada cual la mujer de su prójimo: ¿y habréis de poseer la tierra?
27Les dirás así: Así ha dicho el Señor Jehová: Vivo yo, que los que están en aquellos asolamientos caerán á cuchillo, y al que está sobre la haz del campo entregaré á las bestias que lo devoren; y los que están en las fortalezas y en las cuevas, de pestilencia morirán.
28Y pondré la tierra en desierto y en soledad, y cesará la soberbia de su fortaleza; y los montes de Israel serán asolados, que no haya quien pase.
29Y sabrán que yo soy Jehová, cuando pusiere la tierra en soledad y desierto, por todas las abominaciones que han hecho.
30Y tú, hijo del hombre, los hijos de tu pueblo se mofan de ti junto á las paredes y á las puertas de las casas, y habla el uno con el otro, cada uno con su hermano, diciendo: Venid ahora, y oid qué palabra sale de Jehová.
31Y vendrán á ti como viene el pueblo, y se estarán delante de ti como mi pueblo, y oirán tus palabras, y no las pondrán por obra: antes hacen halagos con sus bocas, y el corazón de ellos anda en pos de su avaricia.
32Y he aquí que tú eres á ellos como cantor de amores, gracioso de voz y que canta bien: y oirán tus palabras, mas no las pondrán por obra.
33Empero cuando ello viniere (he aquí viene) sabrán que hubo profeta entre ellos.

1Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
2Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman:
3If when he seeth the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people;
4Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head.
5He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul.
6But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.
7So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me.
8When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
9Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
10Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live?
11Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
12Therefore, thou son of man, say unto the children of thy people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his transgression: as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turneth from his wickedness; neither shall the righteous be able to live for his righteousness in the day that he sinneth.
13When I shall say to the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his own righteousness, and commit iniquity, all his righteousnesses shall not be remembered; but for his iniquity that he hath committed, he shall die for it.
14Again, when I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right;
15If the wicked restore the pledge, give again that he had robbed, walk in the statutes of life, without committing iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die.
16None of his sins that he hath committed shall be mentioned unto him: he hath done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live.
17Yet the children of thy people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal.
18When the righteous turneth from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, he shall even die thereby.
19But if the wicked turn from his wickedness, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby.
20Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. O ye house of Israel, I will judge you every one after his ways.

24Son of man, they that inhabit those wastes of the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance.
25Wherefore say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Ye eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes toward your idols, and shed blood: and shall ye possess the land?

28For I will lay the land most desolate, and the pomp of her strength shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, that none shall pass through.
29Then shall they know that I am the LORD, when I have laid the land most desolate because of all their abominations which they have committed.
30Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD.
31And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.
32And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
33And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.
World English Bible
1The LORD’s word came to me, saying,
2“Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and tell them, ‘When I bring the sword on a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman,
3if, when he sees the sword come on the land, he blows the trumpet and warns the people,
4then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and doesn’t heed the warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head.
5He heard the sound of the trumpet and didn’t take warning. His blood will be on him; whereas if he had heeded the warning, he would have delivered his soul.
6But if the watchman sees the sword come and doesn’t blow the trumpet, and the people aren’t warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.’
7“So you, son of man, I have set you a watchman to the house of Israel. Therefore hear the word from my mouth, and give them warnings from me.
8When I tell the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ and you don’t speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man will die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at your hand.
9Nevertheless, if you warn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he doesn’t turn from his way; he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul.
10“You, son of man, tell the house of Israel: ‘You say this, “Our transgressions and our sins are on us, and we pine away in them. How then can we live?”’
11Tell them, ‘“As I live,” says the Lord GOD, “I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why will you die, house of Israel?”’
12“You, son of man, tell the children of your people, ‘The righteousness of the righteous will not deliver him in the day of his disobedience. And as for the wickedness of the wicked, he will not fall by it in the day that he turns from his wickedness; neither will he who is righteous be able to live by it in the day that he sins.
13When I tell the righteous that he will surely live, if he trusts in his righteousness and commits iniquity, none of his righteous deeds will be remembered; but he will die in his iniquity that he has committed.
14Again, when I say to the wicked, “You will surely die,” if he turns from his sin and does that which is lawful and right,

22Now the LORD’s hand had been on me in the evening, before he who had escaped came; and he had opened my mouth until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.
23The LORD’s word came to me, saying,
24“Son of man, those who inhabit the waste places in the land of Israel speak, saying, ‘Abraham was one, and he inherited the land; but we are many. The land is given us for inheritance.’
25Therefore tell them, ‘The Lord GOD says: “You eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood. So should you possess the land?
26You stand on your sword, you work abomination, and every one of you defiles his neighbor’s wife. So should you possess the land?”’
27“You shall tell them, ‘The Lord GOD says: “As I live, surely those who are in the waste places will fall by the sword. I will give whoever is in the open field to the animals to be devoured, and those who are in the strongholds and in the caves will die of the pestilence.
28I will make the land a desolation and an astonishment. The pride of her power will cease. The mountains of Israel will be desolate, so that no one will pass through.
29Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I have made the land a desolation and an astonishment because of all their abominations which they have committed.”’
30“As for you, son of man, the children of your people talk about you by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak to one another, everyone to his brother, saying, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes out from the LORD.’
31They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but don’t do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their gain.
32Behold, you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they don’t do them.
33“When this comes to pass—behold, it comes—then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”
