Ezequiel 18
La Sainte Bible (Ostervald)
1La parole de l'Éternel me fut encore adressée en ces termes:
2Que voulez-vous dire, vous qui répétez continuellement ce proverbe, dans le pays d'Israël, en disant: “Les pères ont mangé du raisin vert, et les dents des enfants en sont agacées?”
3Je suis vivant! dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel, vous n'aurez plus lieu de répéter ce proverbe en Israël.
4Voici, toutes les âmes sont à moi, l'âme du père comme l'âme du fils; toutes deux sont à moi; l'âme qui pèche est celle qui mourra.
5L'homme qui est juste, qui pratique la droiture et la justice,
6Qui ne mange point sur les montagnes, qui ne lève pas les yeux vers les idoles de la maison d'Israël, qui ne déshonore pas la femme de son prochain, ni ne s'approche d'une femme pendant sa souillure;
7L'homme qui ne fait de tort à personne, qui rend au débiteur son gage, qui ne commet point de rapine, qui donne de son pain à l'affamé, et couvre d'un vêtement celui qui est nu,
8Qui ne prête point à usure, qui ne retient pas au-delà de ce qui lui est dû, qui détourne sa main de l'iniquité, qui rend son jugement selon la vérité entre un homme et un autre,
9Qui marche selon mes statuts et observe mes ordonnances, en se conduisant avec droiture, - cet homme est juste, et certainement il vivra, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel.
10Mais s'il a donné le jour à un fils violent, qui répande le sang, et ne fasse à son frère que l'une de ces choses et non pas les autres;
11Qu'il mange sur les montagnes, qu'il déshonore la femme de son prochain,
12Qu'il fasse tort à l'affligé et au pauvre, qu'il commette des rapines et ne rende point le gage, qu'il lève les yeux vers les idoles et commette des abominations,
13Qu'il prête à usure, qu'il retienne plus qu'il ne lui est dû, - ce fils-là vivrait-il? Il ne vivra pas! Parce qu'il a commis toutes ces abominations, certainement il mourra, et son sang sera sur lui.
14Mais voici, si ce dernier à son tour a donné le jour à un fils qui voie tous les péchés qu'a commis son père, et qui prenne soin de ne rien faire de semblable;
15Qu'il ne mange point sur les montagnes, qu'il ne lève point les yeux vers les idoles de la maison d'Israël, qu'il ne déshonore pas la femme de son prochain,
16Qu'il ne fasse tort à personne, qu'il ne retienne point le gage et ne commette point de rapine, qu'il donne de son pain à l'affamé, et couvre d'un vêtement celui qui est nu;
17Qu'il détourne sa main de l'iniquité, qu'il ne retienne ni usure ni bénéfice, qu'il observe mes ordonnances et marche selon mes statuts, - cet homme ne mourra point pour l'iniquité de son père; certainement il vivra.
18Mais c'est son père, qui a usé de violences et commis des rapines envers son frère, et fait ce qui n'est pas bien, au milieu de son peuple, voici, c'est lui qui mourra pour son iniquité.
19Et vous dites: “Pourquoi le fils ne porte-t-il pas l'iniquité de son père? “ C'est que le fils a agi selon la droiture et la justice, c'est qu'il a gardé tous mes statuts et les a mis en pratique; certainement il vivra.
20L'âme qui pèche est celle qui mourra. Le fils ne portera point l'inquité du père, et le père ne portera point l'iniquité du fils; la justice du juste sera sur lui, et la méchanceté du méchant sera sur lui.
21Si le méchant se détourne de tous les péchés qu'il a commis, s'il garde tous mes statuts, et s'il agit selon la droiture et la justice, certainement il vivra et ne mourra point.
22On ne se souviendra contre lui d'aucune de toutes les transgressions qu'il aura commises; il vivra à cause de la justice qu'il aura pratiquée.
23Prendrais-je plaisir en aucune manière à la mort du méchant? dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel; n'est-ce pas plutôt à ce qu'il se détourne de ses voies et qu'il vive?
24Mais si le juste se détourne de sa justice, qu'il commette l'iniquité, en suivant toutes les abominations que le méchant a accoutumé de commettre, vivrait-il? On ne se souviendra plus d'aucun des actes de justice qu'il aura accomplis, à cause de l'infidélité dont il s'est rendu coupable, et du péché qu'il a commis; c'est à cause de cela qu'il mourra.
25Et vous dites: “La voie du Seigneur n'est pas bien réglée. “ Écoutez maintenant, maison d'Israël: Est-ce ma voie qui n'est pas bien réglée? Ne sont-ce pas plutôt vos voies qui ne sont pas bien réglées?
26Si le juste se détourne de sa justice, qu'il commette l'iniquité, que pour cela il meure, c'est à cause de l'iniquité qu'il a commise qu'il meurt.
27Et si le méchant se détourne de la méchanceté qu'il a commise, et qu'il pratique la droiture et la justice, il fera vivre son âme.
28S'il ouvre les yeux, et se détourne de toutes les transgressions qu'il a commises, certainement il vivra et ne mourra point.
29Cependant la maison d'Israël dit: “La voie du Seigneur n'est pas bien réglée. “ Sont-ce mes voies, ô maison d'Israël, qui ne sont pas bien réglées? Ne sont-ce pas plutôt vos voies qui ne sont pas bien réglées?
30C'est pourquoi je vous jugerai chacun selon ses voies, ô maison d'Israël, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel. Convertissez-vous, et détournez-vous de toutes vos transgressions, afin que l'iniquité ne devienne point pour vous une cause de ruine.
31Rejetez loin de vous toutes les transgressions dont vous vous êtes rendus coupables, et faites-vous un cœur nouveau et un esprit nouveau; car pourquoi mourriez-vous, ô maison d'Israël?
32En effet, je ne prends point plaisir à la mort de celui qui meurt, dit le Seigneur l'Éternel; convertissez-vous et vivez!

1Y FUÉ á mí palabra de Jehová, diciendo:
2¿Qué pensáis vosotros, vosotros que usáis este refrán sobre la tierra de Israel, diciendo: Los padres comieron el agraz, y los dientes de los hijos tienen la dentera?
3Vivo yo, dice el Señor Jehová, que nunca más tendréis por qué usar este refrán en Israel.
4He aquí que todas las almas son mías; como el alma del padre, así el alma del hijo es mía; el alma que pecare, esa morirá.
5Y el hombre que fuere justo, é hiciere juicio y justicia;
6Que no comiere sobre los montes, ni alzare sus ojos á los ídolos de la casa de Israel, ni violare la mujer de su prójimo, ni llegare á la mujer menstruosa,
7Ni oprimiere á ninguno; al deudor tornare su prenda, no cometiere robo, diere de su pan al hambriento, y cubriere al desnudo con vestido,
8No diere á logro, ni recibiere aumento; de la maldad retrajere su mano, é hiciere juicio de verdad entre hombre y hombre,
9En mis ordenanzas caminare, y guardare mis derechos para hacer verdad, éste es justo: éste vivirá, dice el Señor Jehová.
10Mas si engendrare hijo ladrón, derramador de sangre, ó que haga alguna cosa de éstas,
11Y que no haga las otras; antes comiere sobre los montes, ó violare la mujer de su prójimo,
12Al pobre y menesteroso oprimiere, cometiere robos, no tornare la prenda, ó alzare sus ojos á los ídolos, é hiciere abominación,
13Diere á usura, y recibiere aumento: ¿vivirá éste? No vivirá. Todas estas abominaciones hizo; de cierto morirá; su sangre será sobre él.
14Pero si éste engendrare hijo, el cual viere todos los pecados que su padre hizo, y viéndolos no hiciere según ellos:
15No comiere sobre los montes, ni alzare sus ojos á los ídolos de la casa de Israel; la mujer de su prójimo no violare,
16Ni oprimiere á nadie; la prenda no empeñare, ni cometiere robos; al hambriento diere de su pan, y cubriere de vestido al desnudo;
17Apartare su mano del pobre, usura ni aumento no recibiere; hiciere mis derechos, y anduviere en mis ordenanzas, éste no morirá por la maldad de su padre; de cierto vivirá.
18Su padre, por cuanto hizo agravio, despojó violentamente al hermano, é hizo en medio de su pueblo lo que no es bueno, he aquí que él morirá por su maldad.
19Y si dijereis: ¿Por qué el hijo no llevará por el pecado de su padre? Porque el hijo hizo juicio y justicia, guardó todas mis ordenanzas, y las hizo, de cierto vivirá.
20El alma que pecare, esa morirá: el hijo no llevará por el pecado del padre, ni el padre llevará por el pecado del hijo: la justicia del justo será sobre él, y la impiedad del impío será sobre él.
21Mas el impío, si se apartare de todos sus pecados que hizo, y guardare todas mis ordenanzas, é hiciere juicio y justicia, de cierto vivirá; no morirá.
22Todas sus rebeliones que cometió, no le serán recordadas: en su justicia que hizo vivirá.
23¿Quiero yo la muerte del impío? dice el Señor Jehová. ¿No vivirá, si se apartare de sus caminos?
24Mas si el justo se apartare de su justicia, y cometiere maldad, é hiciere conforme á todas las abominaciones que el impío hizo, ¿vivirá él? Todas las justicias que hizo no vendrán en memoria; por su rebelión con que prevaricó, y por su pecado que cometió, por ello morirá.
25Y si dijereis: No es derecho el camino del Señor: oid ahora, casa de Israel: ¿No es derecho mi camino? ¿no son vuestros caminos torcidos?
26Apartándose el justo de su justicia, y haciendo iniquidad, él morirá por ello: por su iniquidad que hizo, morirá.
27Y apartándose el impío de su impiedad que hizo, y haciendo juicio y justicia, hará vivir su alma.
28Porque miró, y apartóse de todas sus prevaricaciones que hizo, de cierto vivirá, no morirá.
29Si aun dijere la casa de Israel: No es derecho el camino del Señor: ¿No son derechos mis caminos, casa de Israel? Cierto, vuestros caminos no son derechos.
30Por tanto, yo os juzgaré á cada uno según sus caminos, oh casa de Israel, dice el Señor Jehová. Convertíos, y volveos de todas vuestras iniquidades; y no os será la iniquidad causa de ruina.
31Echad de vosotros todas vuestras iniquidades con que habéis prevaricado, y haceos corazón nuevo y espíritu nuevo. ¿Y por qué moriréis, casa de Israel?
32Que no quiero la muerte del que muere, dice el Señor Jehová; convertíos pues, y viviréis.

1The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying,
2What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?
3As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.
4Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
5But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,
6And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,
7And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;
8He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,
9Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord GOD.
10If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,
11And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife,
12Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,
13Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.
14Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,
15That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife,
16Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,
17That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.
18As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.
19Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.
20The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.
21But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
22All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.
23Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live?
24But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.
25Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?
26When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.
27Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.
28Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.
29Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?
30Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.
31Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
32For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.

18As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he will die in his iniquity.
19“Yet you say, ‘Why doesn’t the son bear the iniquity of the father?’ When the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has kept all my statutes, and has done them, he will surely live.
20The soul who sins, he shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.

26When the righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies in it, then he dies in his iniquity that he has done.
27Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he will save his soul alive.
28Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live. He shall not die.
29Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not fair.’ House of Israel, aren’t my ways fair? Aren’t your ways unfair?
30“Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways,” says the Lord GOD. “Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions, so iniquity will not be your ruin.
31Cast away from you all your transgressions in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit. For why will you die, house of Israel?
32For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies,” says the Lord GOD. “Therefore turn yourselves, and live!
