1L'Éternel dit à Moïse: "Va, pars d'ici avec le peuple que tu as conduit hors du pays d'Égypte et allez au pays que j'ai promis par serment à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, disant: ‘Je le donnerai à votre postérité.’
2J'enverrai devant toi un ange, par lequel j'expulserai le Cananéen, l'Amorréen, le Héthéen, le Phérézéen, le Hévéen et le Jébuséen.
3Vers ce pays ruisselant de lait et de miel, non, je ne monterai point au milieu de toi, peuple réfractaire que tu es, car je pourrais t'anéantir pendant le voyage."
4Le peuple, ayant eu connaissance de cette fâcheuse parole, prit le deuil et nul ne se para de ses ornements.
5L'Éternel dit à Moïse: "Dis aux enfants d'Israël: ‘Vous êtes un peuple réfractaire; si un seul instant je m'avançais au milieu de vous, je vous anéantirais. Donc, déposez vos ornements et j'aviserai à ce que je dois vous faire.’ "
6Les enfants- d'Israël renoncèrent à leur parure, à dater du mont Horeb.
7Pour Moïse, il prit sa tente pour la dresser hors du camp, loin de son enceinte et il la nomma Tente d'assignation; de sorte que tout homme ayant à consulter le Seigneur devait se rendre à la Tente d'assignation, située hors du camp.
8Et chaque fois que Moïse se retirait vers la Tente, tout le peuple se levait, chacun se tenait au seuil de sa propre tente et suivait Moïse du regard jusqu'à ce qu'il fût arrivé à la Tente.
9Quand Moïse y était entré, la colonne de nuée descendait, s'arrêtait à l'entrée de la Tente et Dieu s'entretenait avec Moïse.
10Et tout le peuple voyait la colonne nébuleuse arrêtée à l'entrée de la Tente et tout le peuple, aussitôt se prosternait, chacun devant sa tente.
11Or, l'Éternel s'entretenait avec Moïse face à face, comme un homme s'entretient avec un autre; puis Moïse retournait au camp. Mais Josué, fils de Noun, son jeune serviteur, ne quittait pas l'intérieur de la Tente.
12Moïse dit au Seigneur: "Considère que tu me dis: ‘Fais avancer ce peuple’, sans me faire savoir qui tu veux m'adjoindre. D'ailleurs, tu avais dit: ’Je t'ai distingué spécialement et certes tu as trouvé faveur à mes yeux.’
13Eh bien! de grâce, si j'ai trouvé faveur à tes yeux, daigne me révéler tes voies, afin que je te connaisse et que je mérite encore ta bienveillance. Songe aussi que c'est ton peuple, cette nation!"
14Dieu répondit: "Ma face vous guidera et je te donnerai toute sécurité."
15Moïse lui dit: "Si ta face ne nous guide, ne nous fais pas sortir d'ici.
16Et comment serait-il avéré que j'ai obtenu ta bienveillance, moi ainsi que ton peuple, sinon parce que tu marches avec nous? Nous serons ainsi distingués, moi et ton peuple, de tous les peuples qui sont sur la face de la terre."
17L'Éternél dit à Moïse: "Cette chose-là même, que tu as demandée, je l'accorde, parce que tu as trouvé faveur à mes yeux et que je t'ai spécialement distingué."
18Moïse reprit: "Découvre-moi donc ta Gloire."
19Il répondit: "C'est ma bonté tout entière que je veux dérouler à ta vue, et, toi présent, je nommerai de son vrai nom l'Éternel; alors je ferai grâce à qui je devrai faire grâce et je serai miséricordieux pour qui je devrai l'être."
20Il ajouta: "Tu ne saurais voir ma face; car nul homme ne peut me voir et vivre."
21Le Seigneur ajouta: "Il est une place près de moi: tu te tiendras sur le rocher;
22puis, quand passera ma gloire, je te cacherai dans la cavité du roc et je t'abriterai de ma main jusqu'à ce que je sois passé.
23Alors je retirerai ma main et tu me verras par derrière; mais ma face ne peut être vue."

1Y JEHOVÁ dijo á Moisés: Ve, sube de aquí, tú y el pueblo que sacaste de la tierra de Egipto, á la tierra de la cual juré á Abraham, Isaac, y Jacob, diciendo: A tu simiente la daré:
2Y yo enviaré delante de ti el ángel, y echaré fuera al Cananeo y al Amorrheo, y al Hetheo, y al Pherezeo, y al Heveo y al Jebuseo:
3(A la tierra que fluye leche y miel); porque yo no subiré en medio de ti, porque eres pueblo de dura cerviz, no sea que te consuma en el camino.
4Y oyendo el pueblo esta sensible palabra, vistieron luto, y ninguno se puso sus atavíos:
5Pues Jehová dijo á Moisés: Di á los hijos de Israel: Vosotros sois pueblo de dura cerviz: en un momento subiré en medio de ti, y te consumiré: quítate pues ahora tus atavíos, que yo sabré lo que te tengo de hacer.
6Entonces los hijos de Israel se despojaron de sus atavíos desde el monte Horeb.
7Y Moisés tomó el tabernáculo, y extendiólo fuera del campo, lejos del campo, y llamólo el Tabernáculo del Testimonio. Y fué, que cualquiera que requería á Jehová, salía al tabernáculo del testimonio, que estaba fuera del campo.
8Y sucedía que, cuando salía Moisés al tabernáculo, todo el pueblo se levantaba, y estaba cada cual en pie á la puerta de su tienda, y miraban en pos de Moisés, hasta que él entraba en el tabernáculo.
9Y cuando Moisés entraba en el tabernáculo, la columna de nube descendía, y poníase á la puerta del tabernáculo, y Jehová hablaba con Moisés.
10Y viendo todo el pueblo la columna de la nube, que estaba á la puerta del tabernáculo, levantábase todo el pueblo, cada uno á la puerta de su tienda, y adoraba.
11Y hablaba Jehová á Moisés cara á cara, como habla cualquiera á su compañero. Y volvíase al campo; mas el joven Josué, su criado, hijo de Nun, nunca se apartaba de en medio del tabernáculo.
12Y dijo Moisés á Jehová: Mira, tú me dices á mí: Saca este pueblo: y tú no me has declarado á quién has de enviar conmigo: sin embargo tú dices: Yo te he conocido por tu nombre, y has hallado también gracia en mis ojos.
13Ahora, pues, si he hallado gracia en tus ojos, ruégote que me muestres ahora tu camino, para que te conozca, porque halle gracia en tus ojos: y mira que tu pueblo es aquesta gente.
14Y él dijo: Mi rostro irá contigo, y te haré descansar.
15Y él respondió: Si tu rostro no ha de ir conmigo, no nos saques de aquí.
16¿Y en qué se conocerá aquí que he hallado gracia en tus ojos, yo y tu pueblo, sino en andar tú con nosotros, y que yo y tu pueblo seamos apartados de todos los pueblos que están sobre la faz de la tierra?
17Y Jehová dijo á Moisés: También haré esto que has dicho, por cuanto has hallado gracia en mis ojos, y te he conocido por tu nombre.
18El entonces dijo: Ruégote que me muestres tu gloria.
19Y respondióle: Yo haré pasar todo mi bien delante de tu rostro, y proclamaré el nombre de Jehová delante de ti; y tendré misericordia del que tendré misericordia, y seré clemente para con el que seré clemente.
20Dijo más: No podrás ver mi rostro: porque no me verá hombre, y vivirá.
21Y dijo aún Jehová: He aquí lugar junto á mí, y tú estarás sobre la peña:
22Y será que, cuando pasare mi gloria, yo te pondré en una hendidura de la peña, y te cubriré con mi mano hasta que haya pasado:
23Después apartaré mi mano, y verás mis espaldas; mas no se verá mi rostro.

1And the LORD said unto Moses, Depart, and go up hence, thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, Unto thy seed will I give it:
2And I will send an angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite:
3Unto a land flowing with milk and honey: for I will not go up in the midst of thee; for thou art a stiffnecked people: lest I consume thee in the way.
4And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned: and no man did put on him his ornaments.
5For the LORD had said unto Moses, Say unto the children of Israel, Ye are a stiffnecked people: I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment, and consume thee: therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto thee.
6And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb.
7And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp, afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
8And it came to pass, when Moses went out unto the tabernacle, that all the people rose up, and stood every man at his tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the tabernacle.
9And it came to pass, as Moses entered into the tabernacle, the cloudy pillar descended, and stood at the door of the tabernacle, and the LORD talked with Moses.
10And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle door: and all the people rose up and worshipped, every man in his tent door.
11And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend. And he turned again into the camp: but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the tabernacle.
12And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.
13Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
14And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
15And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.
16For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
17And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
18And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
19And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
20And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
21And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
22And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
23And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
World English Bible
1The LORD spoke to Moses, “Depart, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’
2I will send an angel before you; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
3Go to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, for you are a stiff-necked people, lest I consume you on the way.”
4When the people heard this evil news, they mourned; and no one put on his jewelry.
5The LORD had said to Moses, “Tell the children of Israel, ‘You are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go up among you for one moment, I would consume you. Therefore now take off your jewelry from you, that I may know what to do to you.’”
6The children of Israel stripped themselves of their jewelry from Mount Horeb onward.
7Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it outside the camp, far away from the camp, and he called it “The Tent of Meeting.” Everyone who sought the LORD went out to the Tent of Meeting, which was outside the camp.
8When Moses went out to the Tent, all the people rose up, and stood, everyone at their tent door, and watched Moses, until he had gone into the Tent.
9When Moses entered into the Tent, the pillar of cloud descended, stood at the door of the Tent, and the LORD spoke with Moses.
10All the people saw the pillar of cloud stand at the door of the Tent, and all the people rose up and worshiped, everyone at their tent door.
11The LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. He turned again into the camp, but his servant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, didn’t depart from the Tent.
12Moses said to the LORD, “Behold, you tell me, ‘Bring up this people;’ and you haven’t let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’
13Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me your way, now, that I may know you, so that I may find favor in your sight; and consider that this nation is your people.”
14He said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
15Moses said to him, “If your presence doesn’t go with me, don’t carry us up from here.
16For how would people know that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Isn’t it that you go with us, so that we are separated, I and your people, from all the people who are on the surface of the earth?”
17The LORD said to Moses, “I will do this thing also that you have spoken; for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.”
18Moses said, “Please show me your glory.”
19He said, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the LORD’s name before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.”
20He said, “You cannot see my face, for man may not see me and live.”
21The LORD also said, “Behold, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock.
22It will happen, while my glory passes by, that I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by;
23then I will take away my hand, and you will see my back; but my face shall not be seen.”
