1Ein Mann aus dem Stamme Levis aber heiratete die Tochter Levis.
2Da wurde die Frau schwanger und gebar einen Sohn. Als sie nun sah, daß er stattlich war, verheimlichte sie ihn drei Monate lang.
3Als sie ihn aber nicht länger verbergen konnte, holte sie für ihn ein Kästchen aus Papyrusschilf, verpichte es mit Asphalt und Pech und setzte es, nachdem sie das Kind hineingelegt hatte, ins Schilf am Ufer des Nils.
4Seine Schwester aber paßte nicht weit davon auf, um zu erfahren, was mit ihm geschehen würde.
5Da kam die Tochter des Pharao an den Nil, um zu baden. Während nun ihre Begleiterinnen am Ufer des Nils entlang gingen, erblickte sie zwischen dem Röhricht das Kästchen; da schickte sie ihre Sklavin hin und ließ es holen.
6Als sie es nun öffnete, war ein weinender Knabe darin. Sie aber fühlte Mitleid mit ihm, denn sie dachte: es wird einer von den Knaben der Hebräer sein.
7Da fragte seine Schwester die Tochter des Pharao: Soll ich etwa hingehn und dir eine Amme hebräischer Abkunft herbeirufen, damit sie dir das Knäblein säuge?
8Die Tochter des Pharao erwiderte: Ja, geh! Da ging das Mädchen hin und rief die Mutter des Knäbleins herbei.
9Und die Tochter des Pharao sprach zu ihr: Wenn du dieses Knäblein mitnimmst und es für mich säugst, so will ich dir den Lohn dafür bezahlen! Da nahm das Weib das Knäblein und säugte es.
10Als aber der Knabe herangewachsen war, brachte sie ihn der Tochter des Pharao, und sie nahm ihn als Sohn an und gab ihm den Namen Mose; denn sie sagte: Aus dem Wasser habe ich ihn ja gezogen!
11Zu jener Zeit aber begab sich einst Mose, als er herangewachsen war, zu seinen Volksgenossen hinaus und sah, wie sie Frondienste leisten mußten; da bemerkte er, wie ein Ägypter einen Hebräer, einen seiner Volksgenossen, schlug.
12Da wandte er sich nach allen Seiten um, und wie er sah, daß niemand zugegen war, erschlug er den Ägypter und verscharrte ihn im Sande.
13Am folgenden Tag ging er wieder hinaus, da traf er zwei Hebräer im Streit miteinander. Da fragte er den, der im Unrecht war: Warum schlägst du deinen Genossen?
14Der aber sprach: Wer hat dich zum Herrn und Richter über uns bestellt? Gedenkst du mich etwa auch totzuschlagen, wie du den Ägypter totgeschlagen hast? Da bekam Mose Angst, denn er sagte sich: so ist also die Sache doch ruchbar geworden!
15Aber auch der Pharao hörte von der Sache; da trachtete er darnach, Mose umbringen zu lassen. Mose jedoch ergriff die Flucht vor dem Pharao und begab sich nach dem Lande der Midianiter. Dort setzte er sich an den Brunnen.
16Der Priester der Midianiter aber hatte sieben Töchter; die kamen herbei und wollten Wasser schöpfen und die Tränkrinnen füllen, um die Schafe ihres Vaters zu tränken.
17Aber die Hirten kamen herzu und drängten sie auf die Seite. Da stand Mose auf, unterstützte sie und verschaffte ihren Schafen zu trinken.
18Als sie nun zu ihrem Vater Reguel kamen, fragte er sie: Warum kommt ihr denn heute so früh?
19Sie erwiderten: Ein Mann aus Ägypten hat uns vor den Hirten in Schutz genommen; dazu hat er uns sogar Wasser geschöpft und die Schafe getränkt.
20Da sagte er zu seinen Töchtern: Wo ist er denn? Warum habt ihr den Mann dort stehen lassen? Ladet ihn doch ein zur Mahlzeit!
21Mose aber entschloß sich, bei dem Manne zu bleiben, und er gab Mose seine Tochter Zipora zum Weibe.
22Die gebar einen Sohn, den nannte er Gersom; denn er sprach: Ein Fremdling bin ich geworden in einem fremden Lande.
23Da ereignete es sich lange Zeit hernach, daß der König von Ägypten starb. Da seufzten die Israeliten unter der schweren Arbeit und schrieen laut auf, so daß ihr Ruf um Befreiung von der schweren Arbeit zu Gott drang.
24Und Gott erhörte ihr Wehklagen und Gott gedachte an seinen Bund mit Abraham, Isaak und Jakob.
25Und Gott schaute auf die Israeliten und offenbarte sich ihnen.

1UN varón de la familia de Leví fué, y tomó por mujer una hija de Leví:
2La cual concibió, y parió un hijo: y viéndolo que era hermoso, túvole escondido tres meses.
3Pero no pudiendo ocultarle más tiempo, tomó una arquilla de juncos, y calafateóla con pez y betún, y colocó en ella al niño, y púsolo en un carrizal á la orilla del río:
4Y paróse una hermana suya á lo lejos, para ver lo que le acontecería.
5Y la hija de Faraón descendió á lavarse al río, y paseándose sus doncellas por la ribera del río, vió ella la arquilla en el carrizal, y envió una criada suya á que la tomase.
6Y como la abrió, vió al niño; y he aquí que el niño lloraba. Y teniendo compasión de él, dijo: De los niños de los Hebreos es éste.
7Entonces su hermana dijo á la hija de Faraón: ¿Iré á llamarte un ama de las Hebreas, para que te críe este niño?
8Y la hija de Faraón respondió: Ve. Entonces fué la doncella, y llamó á la madre del niño;
9A la cual dijo la hija de Faraón: Lleva este niño, y críamelo, y yo te lo pagaré. Y la mujer tomó al niño, y criólo.
10Y como creció el niño, ella lo trajo á la hija de Faraón, la cual lo prohijó, y púsole por nombre Moisés, diciendo: Porque de las aguas lo saqué.
11Y en aquellos días acaeció que, crecido ya Moisés, salió á sus hermanos, y vió sus cargas: y observó á un Egipcio que hería á uno de los Hebreos, sus hermanos.
12Y miró á todas partes, y viendo que no parecía nadie, mató al Egipcio, y escondiólo en la arena.
13Y salió al día siguiente, y viendo á dos Hebreos que reñían, dijo al que hacía la injuria: ¿Por qué hieres á tu prójimo?
14Y él respondió: ¿Quién te ha puesto á ti por príncipe y juez sobre nosotros? ¿piensas matarme como mataste al Egipcio? Entonces Moisés tuvo miedo, y dijo: Ciertamente esta cosa es descubierta.
15Y oyendo Faraón este negocio, procuró matar á Moisés: mas Moisés huyó de delante de Faraón, y habitó en la tierra de Madián; y sentóse junto á un pozo.
16Tenía el sacerdote de Madián siete hijas, las cuales vinieron á sacar agua, para llenar las pilas y dar de beber á las ovejas de su padre.
17Mas los pastores vinieron, y echáronlas: Entonces Moisés se levantó y defendiólas, y abrevó sus ovejas.
18Y volviendo ellas á Ragüel su padre, díjoles él: ¿Por qué habéis hoy venido tan presto?
19Y ellas respondieron: Un varón Egipcio nos defendió de mano de los pastores, y también nos sacó el agua, y abrevó las ovejas.
20Y dijo á sus hijas: ¿Y dónde está? ¿por qué habéis dejado ese hombre? llamadle para que coma pan.
21Y Moisés acordó en morar con aquel varón; y él dió á Moisés á su hija Séphora:
22La cual le parió un hijo, y él le puso por nombre Gersom: porque dijo: Peregrino soy en tierra ajena.
23Y aconteció que después de muchos días murió el rey de Egipto, y los hijos de Israel suspiraron á causa de la servidumbre, y clamaron: y subió á Dios el clamor de ellos con motivo de su servidumbre.
24Y oyó Dios el gemido de ellos, y acordóse de su pacto con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.
25Y miró Dios á los hijos de Israel, y reconociólos Dios.

1And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.
2And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.
3And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink.
4And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.
5And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.
6And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children.
7Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?
8And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s mother.
9And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it.
10And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.
11And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.
12And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
13And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?
14And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.
15Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.
16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.
17And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.
18And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day?
19And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.
20And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.
21And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.
22And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.
23And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.
24And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
25And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.

1A man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife.
2The woman conceived and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.
3When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.
4His sister stood far off, to see what would be done to him.
5Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her servant to get it.
6She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
7Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”
8Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” The young woman went and called the child’s mother.
9Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” The woman took the child, and nursed him.
10The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”
11In those days, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his brothers and saw their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.
12He looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
13He went out the second day, and behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow?”
14He said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?” Moses was afraid, and said, “Surely this thing is known.”
15Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.
16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.
17The shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.
18When they came to Reuel, their father, he said, “How is it that you have returned so early today?”
19They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock.”
20He said to his daughters, “Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”
21Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter.
22She bore a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land.”
23In the course of those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.
24God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
25God saw the children of Israel, and God understood.
