1Et un homme de la maison de Lévi alla prendre pour femme une fille de Lévi.
2Et cette femme conçut et enfanta un fils, et elle vit qu'il était beau et le cacha trois mois.
3Quand elle ne put plus le tenir caché, elle prit une arche en roseau, l'enduisit de bitume et de poix et y mit le petit garçon. Puis elle mit l'arche dans les joncs sur la rive du fleuve.
4Et la sœur de l'enfant se tenait à distance pour savoir ce qui lui arriverait.
5Or la fille de Pharaon vint faire ses ablutions sur le bord du fleuve et ses femmes marchaient le long du fleuve. Elle vit l'arche au milieu des joncs et envoya sa servante pour le prendre.
6Et elle l'ouvrit et vit l'enfant : c'était un petit garçon qui pleurait. Et elle eut pitié de lui et dit : C'est un des enfants des Hébreux.
7Et la sœur de l'enfant dit à la fille de Pharaon : Dois-je aller te chercher une nourrice d'entre les femmes des Hébreux pour qu'elle t'allaite ce petit garçon ?
8Et la fille de Pharaon lui dit : Va. Et la jeune fille alla chercher la mère de l'enfant.
9Et la fille de Pharaon lui dit : Emporte cet enfant-là et allaite-le moi ; c'est moi qui te donnerai ton salaire. Et la femme prit l'enfant et l'allaita.
10Quand l'enfant eut grandi, elle l'amena à la fille de Pharaon et il devint son fils, et elle lui donna le nom de Moïse. Car, dit-elle, je l'ai tiré de l'eau.
11Et il arriva, en ce temps-là, que Moïse, étant devenu grand, sortit pour aller vers ses frères et vit leur lourd travail, et il vit un Egyptien frapper un Hébreu, un de ses frères.
12Alors, s'étant tourné de côté et d'autre et voyant qu'il n'y avait personne, il tua l'Egyptien et le cacha dans le sable.
13Il sortit encore le lendemain et, voyant deux Hébreux qui se battaient, il dit à celui qui avait tort : Pourquoi frappes-tu ton camarade ?
14Mais celui-ci lui dit : Qui t'a établi pour être notre chef et notre juge ? Est-ce que tu veux me tuer, comme tu as tué l'Egyptien ? Alors Moïse eut peur et dit : Certainement l'affaire s'est ébruitée.
15Et Pharaon apprit cette affaire et chercha à faire mourir Moïse, et Moïse s'enfuit loin de Pharaon. Il s'arrêta dans la terre de Madian et s'assit près du puits.
16Or le sacrificateur de Madian avait sept filles, et elles vinrent puiser de l'eau et remplirent les auges pour abreuver les brebis de leur père.
17Mais les bergers étant venus les chasser, Moïse se leva, prit leur défense et abreuva leurs brebis.
18Quand elles retournèrent vers Réuël leur père, celui-ci leur dit : Pourquoi revenez-vous si tôt aujourd'hui ?
19Et elles dirent : C'est qu'un homme égyptien nous a débarrassées des bergers et que même il a puisé pour nous toute l'eau qu'il fallait et a abreuvé les brebis.
20Alors il dit à ses filles : Et où est-il ? Pourquoi avez-vous laissé là cet homme ? Appelez-le et qu'il mange du pain.
21Et Moïse consentit à demeurer avec cet homme. Et celui-ci donna à Moïse sa fille Séphora,
22et elle enfanta un fils auquel il donna le nom de Guersom, parce que, dit-il, j'ai été habitant d'une terre étrangère.
23Dans ce temps, qui fut long, il arriva que le roi d'Egypte mourut, et les fils d'Israël gémirent de leur servitude et crièrent, et leur appel monta à Dieu du sein de la servitude.
24Et Dieu entendit leur sanglot et Dieu se souvint de son alliance avec Abraham, avec Isaac et avec Jacob,
25et Dieu vit les fils d'Israël et Dieu connut leur état.

1UN varón de la familia de Leví fué, y tomó por mujer una hija de Leví:
2La cual concibió, y parió un hijo: y viéndolo que era hermoso, túvole escondido tres meses.
3Pero no pudiendo ocultarle más tiempo, tomó una arquilla de juncos, y calafateóla con pez y betún, y colocó en ella al niño, y púsolo en un carrizal á la orilla del río:
4Y paróse una hermana suya á lo lejos, para ver lo que le acontecería.
5Y la hija de Faraón descendió á lavarse al río, y paseándose sus doncellas por la ribera del río, vió ella la arquilla en el carrizal, y envió una criada suya á que la tomase.
6Y como la abrió, vió al niño; y he aquí que el niño lloraba. Y teniendo compasión de él, dijo: De los niños de los Hebreos es éste.
7Entonces su hermana dijo á la hija de Faraón: ¿Iré á llamarte un ama de las Hebreas, para que te críe este niño?
8Y la hija de Faraón respondió: Ve. Entonces fué la doncella, y llamó á la madre del niño;
9A la cual dijo la hija de Faraón: Lleva este niño, y críamelo, y yo te lo pagaré. Y la mujer tomó al niño, y criólo.
10Y como creció el niño, ella lo trajo á la hija de Faraón, la cual lo prohijó, y púsole por nombre Moisés, diciendo: Porque de las aguas lo saqué.
11Y en aquellos días acaeció que, crecido ya Moisés, salió á sus hermanos, y vió sus cargas: y observó á un Egipcio que hería á uno de los Hebreos, sus hermanos.
12Y miró á todas partes, y viendo que no parecía nadie, mató al Egipcio, y escondiólo en la arena.
13Y salió al día siguiente, y viendo á dos Hebreos que reñían, dijo al que hacía la injuria: ¿Por qué hieres á tu prójimo?
14Y él respondió: ¿Quién te ha puesto á ti por príncipe y juez sobre nosotros? ¿piensas matarme como mataste al Egipcio? Entonces Moisés tuvo miedo, y dijo: Ciertamente esta cosa es descubierta.
15Y oyendo Faraón este negocio, procuró matar á Moisés: mas Moisés huyó de delante de Faraón, y habitó en la tierra de Madián; y sentóse junto á un pozo.
16Tenía el sacerdote de Madián siete hijas, las cuales vinieron á sacar agua, para llenar las pilas y dar de beber á las ovejas de su padre.
17Mas los pastores vinieron, y echáronlas: Entonces Moisés se levantó y defendiólas, y abrevó sus ovejas.
18Y volviendo ellas á Ragüel su padre, díjoles él: ¿Por qué habéis hoy venido tan presto?
19Y ellas respondieron: Un varón Egipcio nos defendió de mano de los pastores, y también nos sacó el agua, y abrevó las ovejas.
20Y dijo á sus hijas: ¿Y dónde está? ¿por qué habéis dejado ese hombre? llamadle para que coma pan.
21Y Moisés acordó en morar con aquel varón; y él dió á Moisés á su hija Séphora:
22La cual le parió un hijo, y él le puso por nombre Gersom: porque dijo: Peregrino soy en tierra ajena.
23Y aconteció que después de muchos días murió el rey de Egipto, y los hijos de Israel suspiraron á causa de la servidumbre, y clamaron: y subió á Dios el clamor de ellos con motivo de su servidumbre.
24Y oyó Dios el gemido de ellos, y acordóse de su pacto con Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.
25Y miró Dios á los hijos de Israel, y reconociólos Dios.

1And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.
2And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.
3And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink.
4And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.
5And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it.
6And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children.
7Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?
8And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s mother.
9And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it.
10And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.
11And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.
12And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
13And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow?
14And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known.
15Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.
16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.
17And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.
18And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day?
19And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock.
20And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.
21And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.
22And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.
23And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.
24And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
25And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.
World English Bible
1A man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife.
2The woman conceived and bore a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.
3When she could no longer hide him, she took a papyrus basket for him, and coated it with tar and with pitch. She put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank.
4His sister stood far off, to see what would be done to him.
5Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her servant to get it.
6She opened it, and saw the child, and behold, the baby cried. She had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”
7Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”
8Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” The young woman went and called the child’s mother.
9Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” The woman took the child, and nursed him.
10The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”
11In those days, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his brothers and saw their burdens. He saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers.
12He looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.
13He went out the second day, and behold, two men of the Hebrews were fighting with each other. He said to him who did the wrong, “Why do you strike your fellow?”
14He said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you plan to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?” Moses was afraid, and said, “Surely this thing is known.”
15Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.
16Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.
17The shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.
18When they came to Reuel, their father, he said, “How is it that you have returned so early today?”
19They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock.”
20He said to his daughters, “Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”
21Moses was content to dwell with the man. He gave Moses Zipporah, his daughter.
22She bore a son, and he named him Gershom, for he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land.”
23In the course of those many days, the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up to God because of the bondage.
24God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.
25God saw the children of Israel, and God understood.
