1Voici les noms des fils d'Israël, venus en Égypte; ils y accompagnèrent Jacob, chacun avec sa famille:
2Ruben, Siméon, Lévi et Juda;
3Issachar, Zabulon et Benjamin;
4Dan et Nephtali, Gad et Aser.
5Toutes les personnes composant la lignée de Jacob étaient au nombre de soixante-dix. Pour Joseph, il était déjà en Égypte.
6Joseph mourut, ainsi que tous ses frères, ainsi que toute cette génération.
7Or, les enfants d'Israël avaient augmenté, pullulé, étaient devenus prodigieusement nombreux et ils remplissaient la contrée.
8Un roi nouveau s'éleva sur l'Égypte, lequel n'avait point
9Il dit à son peuple: "Voyez, la population des enfants d'Israël surpasse et domine la nôtre.
10Eh bien! usons d'expédients contre elle; autrement, elle s'accroîtra encore et alors, survienne une guerre, ils pourraient se joindre à nos ennemis, nous combattre et sortir de la province."
11Et l'on imposa à ce peuple des officiers de corvée pour l'accabler de labeurs et il bâtit pour Pharaon des villes d'approvisionnement, Pithom et Ramessès.
12Mais, plus on l'opprimait, plus sa population grossissait et débordait et ils conçurent de l'aversion pour les enfants d'Israël.
13Les Égyptiens accablèrent les enfants d'Israël de rudes besognes.
14Ils leur rendirent la vie amère par des travaux pénibles sur l'argile et la brique, par des corvées rurales, outre les autres labeurs qu'ils leur imposèrent tyranniquement.
15Le roi d'Égypte s'adressa aux sages femmes hébreues, qui se nommaient, l'une Chifra, l'autre Poûa
16et il dit: "Lorsque vous accoucherez les femmes hébreues, vous examinerez les attributs du sexe: si c'est un garçon, faites-le périr; une fille, qu'elle vive."
17Mais les sages-femmes craignaient Dieu: elles ne firent point ce que leur avait dit le roi d'Égypte, elles laissèrent vivre les garçons.
18Le roi d'Égypte manda les sages-femmes et leur dit: "Pourquoi avez-vous agi ainsi, avez-vous laissé vivre les garçons?"
19Les sages-femmes répondirent à Pharaon: "C'est que les femmes des Hébreux ne sont pas comme celles des Égyptiens, elles sont vigoureuses et avant que la sage-femme soit arrivée près d'elles, elles sont délivrées."
20Le Seigneur bénit les sages-femmes et le peuple multiplia et s'accrut considérablement.
21Or, comme les sages-femmes avaient craint le Seigneur et qu'il avait augmenté leurs familles,
22Pharaon donna l'ordre suivant à tout son peuple: "Tout mâle nouveau-né, jetez-le dans le fleuve et toute fille laissez-la vivre."

1ESTOS son los nombres de los hijos de Israel, que entraron en Egipto con Jacob; cada uno entró con su familia.
2Rubén, Simeón, Leví y Judá;
3Issachâr, Zabulón y Benjamín;
4Dan y Nephtalí, Gad y Aser.
5Y todas las almas de los que salieron del muslo de Jacob, fueron setenta. Y José estaba en Egipto.
6Y murió José, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación.
7Y los hijos de Israel crecieron, y multiplicaron, y fueron aumentados y corroborados en extremo; y llenóse la tierra de ellos.
8Levantóse entretanto un nuevo rey sobre Egipto, que no conocía á José; el cual dijo á su pueblo:
9He aquí, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es mayor y más fuerte que nosotros:
10Ahora, pues, seamos sabios para con él, porque no se multiplique, y acontezca que viniendo guerra, él también se junte con nuestros enemigos, y pelee contra nosotros, y se vaya de la tierra.
11Entonces pusieron sobre él comisarios de tributos que los molestasen con sus cargas; y edificaron á Faraón las ciudades de los bastimentos, Phithom y Raamses.
12Empero cuanto más los oprimían, tanto más se multiplicaban y crecían: así que estaban ellos fastidiados de los hijos de Israel.
13Y los Egipcios hicieron servir á los hijos de Israel con dureza:
14Y amargaron su vida con dura servidumbre, en hacer barro y ladrillo, y en toda labor del campo, y en todo su servicio, al cual los obligaban con rigorismo.
15Y habló el rey de Egipto á las parteras de las Hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Siphra, y otra Phúa, y díjoles:
16Cuando parteareis á las Hebreas, y mirareis los asientos, si fuere hijo, matadlo; y si fuere hija, entonces viva.
17Mas las parteras temieron á Dios, y no hicieron como les mandó el rey de Egipto, sino que reservaban la vida á los niños.
18Y el rey de Egipto hizo llamar á las parteras, y díjoles: Por qué habéis hecho esto, que habéis reservado la vida á los niños?
19Y las parteras respondieron á Faraón: Porque las mujeres Hebreas no son como las Egipcias: porque son robustas, y paren antes que la partera venga á ellas.
20Y Dios hizo bien á las parteras: y el pueblo se multiplicó, y se corroboraron en gran manera.
21Y por haber las parteras temido á Dios, él les hizo casas.
22Entonces Faraón mandó á todo su pueblo, diciendo: Echad en el río todo hijo que naciere, y á toda hija reservad la vida.

1Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.
2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
5And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.
6And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
7And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
8Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.
9And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:
10Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
11Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.
12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
13And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:
14And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.
15And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:
16And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
17But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.
18And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?
19And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.
20Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
21And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
22And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.

10Come, let’s deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies and fight against us, and escape out of the land.”
11Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.
12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They started to dread the children of Israel.
13The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve,
14and they made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.
15The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah,
16and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”
17But the midwives feared God, and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.
18The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing and saved the boys alive?”
19The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”
20God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.
21Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.
22Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”
