1Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que vinieron a Egipto; cada hombre y su familia vinieron con Jacob;
2Rubén, Simeón, Leví y Judá;
3Isacar, Zabulón y Benjamín;
4Dan y Neftali, Gad y Aser.
5Todos los descendientes de Jacob fueron setenta personas; y José estaba con ellos.
6Entonces José llegó a su fin, y todos sus hermanos y toda esa generación.
7Y los hijos de Israel fueron fértiles, creciendo mucho en número y en poder; y la tierra estaba llena de ellos.
8Ahora un nuevo rey llegó al poder en Egipto, que no tenía conocimiento de José.
9Y dijo a su pueblo: Mira, el pueblo de Israel es más numeroso y poderoso que nosotros;
10Maquinamos algo para que no sigan aumentando su población, y si hay una guerra, pueden unirse con aquellos que están en contra de nosotros, y atacarnos, y salgan de la tierra.
11Así que ponen a los supervisores del trabajo forzado sobre ellos, a fin de que su fuerza disminuye por la carga de su trabajo. Y construyeron ciudades para el faraón, Pitom y Ramsés.
12Pero cuanto más crueles eran con ellos, mayor era su número, hasta que toda la tierra estuvo llena de ellos. Y los hijos de Israel fueron odiados por los egipcios.
13Y dieron a los hijos de Israel aún un trabajo más difícil de hacer.
14Y amargaron sus vidas con el trabajo duro, fabricando materiales de construcción y ladrillos, y haciendo todo tipo de trabajo en el campo en las condiciones más difíciles.
15Y el rey de Egipto dijo a las hebreas que daban ayuda en el momento del parto (el nombre de la una era Sifra y el nombre de la otra Fua.
16Cuando estás cuidando a las hebreas en el parto, si es hijo, lo matarás; pero si es una hija, ella puede seguir viviendo.
17Pero las mujeres tenían temor de Dios, y no hicieron como dijo el rey de Egipto, sino dejaron que los hijos varones siguieran viviendo.
18Entonces el rey de Egipto ordenó llamar a las parteras, y les dijo: ¿Por qué hiciste esto, y dejaron que los hijos varones sigan viviendo?
19Y dijeron a Faraón: Porque las hebreas no son como las egipcias, porque son fuertes, y el nacimiento tiene lugar antes de que vengamos a ellas.
20Y la bendición de Dios estaba sobre estas mujeres: y la gente aumentó en número y se hizo muy fuerte.
21Y como las parteras que cuidaban a las madres hebreas tenían temor de Dios, las prosperó con familias.
22Y Faraón dio orden a todo su pueblo, diciendo: Todo hijo que nazca será echado al río, y toda hija podrá seguir viviendo.

1ESTOS son los nombres de los hijos de Israel, que entraron en Egipto con Jacob; cada uno entró con su familia.
2Rubén, Simeón, Leví y Judá;
3Issachâr, Zabulón y Benjamín;
4Dan y Nephtalí, Gad y Aser.
5Y todas las almas de los que salieron del muslo de Jacob, fueron setenta. Y José estaba en Egipto.
6Y murió José, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación.
7Y los hijos de Israel crecieron, y multiplicaron, y fueron aumentados y corroborados en extremo; y llenóse la tierra de ellos.
8Levantóse entretanto un nuevo rey sobre Egipto, que no conocía á José; el cual dijo á su pueblo:
9He aquí, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es mayor y más fuerte que nosotros:
10Ahora, pues, seamos sabios para con él, porque no se multiplique, y acontezca que viniendo guerra, él también se junte con nuestros enemigos, y pelee contra nosotros, y se vaya de la tierra.
11Entonces pusieron sobre él comisarios de tributos que los molestasen con sus cargas; y edificaron á Faraón las ciudades de los bastimentos, Phithom y Raamses.
12Empero cuanto más los oprimían, tanto más se multiplicaban y crecían: así que estaban ellos fastidiados de los hijos de Israel.
13Y los Egipcios hicieron servir á los hijos de Israel con dureza:
14Y amargaron su vida con dura servidumbre, en hacer barro y ladrillo, y en toda labor del campo, y en todo su servicio, al cual los obligaban con rigorismo.
15Y habló el rey de Egipto á las parteras de las Hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Siphra, y otra Phúa, y díjoles:
16Cuando parteareis á las Hebreas, y mirareis los asientos, si fuere hijo, matadlo; y si fuere hija, entonces viva.
17Mas las parteras temieron á Dios, y no hicieron como les mandó el rey de Egipto, sino que reservaban la vida á los niños.
18Y el rey de Egipto hizo llamar á las parteras, y díjoles: Por qué habéis hecho esto, que habéis reservado la vida á los niños?
19Y las parteras respondieron á Faraón: Porque las mujeres Hebreas no son como las Egipcias: porque son robustas, y paren antes que la partera venga á ellas.
20Y Dios hizo bien á las parteras: y el pueblo se multiplicó, y se corroboraron en gran manera.
21Y por haber las parteras temido á Dios, él les hizo casas.
22Entonces Faraón mandó á todo su pueblo, diciendo: Echad en el río todo hijo que naciere, y á toda hija reservad la vida.

1Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.
2Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,
3Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.
5And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.
6And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.
7And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.
8Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.
9And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:
10Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
11Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.
12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.
13And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:
14And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.
15And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:
16And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
17But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.
18And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?
19And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.
20Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.
21And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.
22And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.

8Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who didn’t know Joseph.
9He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we.
10Come, let’s deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies and fight against us, and escape out of the land.”
11Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.
12But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. They started to dread the children of Israel.
13The Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel serve,
14and they made their lives bitter with hard service in mortar and in brick, and in all kinds of service in the field, all their service, in which they ruthlessly made them serve.
15The king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah,
16and he said, “When you perform the duty of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birth stool, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”
17But the midwives feared God, and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.
18The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing and saved the boys alive?”
19The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”
20God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.
21Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.
22Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”
