1Als aber Jethro, der Priester der Midianiter, der Schwiegervater Moses, die Kunde von alledem vernahm, was Gott an Mose und an seinem Volke Israel gethan hatte, daß Jahwe Israel aus Ägypten weggeführt hatte,
2nahm Jethro, der Schwiegervater Moses, Zipora, das Weib Moses, - er hatte sie zurückgesandt -
3und ihre beiden Söhne - der eine hieß Gersom, weil er gesagt hatte: ein Fremdling bin ich geworden in einem fremden Lande;
4der andere hieß Elieser, denn: der Gott meines Vaters half mir und errettete mich vor dem Schwerte des Pharao. -
5Da kam Jethro, der Schwiegervater Moses, mit seinen Söhnen und seinem Weibe zu Mose in die Wüste, woselbst er lagerte am Berge Gottes.
6Und er ließ Mose sagen: Ich, dein Schwiegervater Jethro, komme zu dir, nebst deinem Weib und ihren beiden Söhnen, die sie bei sich hat.
7Da machte sich Mose auf den Weg, seinem Schwiegervater entgegenzugehen, verneigte sich und küßte ihn; dann fragten sie einander nach ihrem Wohlbefinden und begaben sich zum Zelte.
8Mose aber erzählte seinem Schwiegervater alles, was Jahwe dem Pharao und den Ägyptern zu Gunsten der Israeliten angethan hatte, von allen Mühsalen, die ihnen unterwegs zugestoßen waren, und wie Jahwe sie errettet hatte.
9Und Jethro freute sich über alle die Wohlthaten, die Jahwe den Israeliten erwiesen hatte, daß er sie aus der Gewalt der Ägypter befreit hatte.
10Und Jethro sprach: Gepriesen sei Jahwe, daß er euch aus der Gewalt des Pharao und der Ägypter befreit hat, daß er das Volk aus der Gewalt der Ägypter befreit hat.
11Nun erkenne ich, daß Jahwe mächtiger ist als alle Götter!
12Hierauf ließ Jethro, der Schwiegervater Moses, Schlachtvieh zu einem Brandopfer und zu einer Opfermahlzeit zu Ehren Gottes herbeischaffen, und es kamen Aaron und alle Vornehmen der Israeliten herbei, um mit dem Schwiegervater Moses ein Mahl vor Gott zu halten.
13Des anderen Tages aber setzte sich Mose hin, um dem Volke Recht zu sprechen; da traten Leute vor Mose hin vom Morgen bis zum Abend.
14Als nun der Schwiegervater Moses sah, wie er für die Leute zu thun hatte, sagte er: Was machst du dir mit den Leuten zu thun? Warum sitzest du allein zu Gericht, während alle Leute dich überlaufen vom Morgen bis zum Abend?
15Mose erwiderte seinem Schwiegervater: Ja, die Leute kommen zu mir, um Gott zu befragen!
16Wenn sie eine Rechtssache haben, kommen sie zu mir, damit ich entscheide, wer von beiden Recht hat, und verkündige die Rechtssprüche und Entscheide Gottes.
17Da sprach der Schwiegervater Moses zu ihm: Daran thust du nicht gut.
18Du wirst dich, sowie die Leute, die bei dir sind, aufreiben; denn dieses Geschäft ist zu schwer für dich, du kannst es nicht allein besorgen.
19Ich will dir jetzt einen guten Rat geben; folge mir, so wird Gott dir beistehen: bleibe du selbst für das Volk Sachwalter bei Gott und bringe du selbst die Rechtssachen vor Gott.
20Und belehre sie über die Rechtssatzungen und Entscheide und weise ihnen den Weg, den sie wandeln sollen, und was sie thun sollen.
21Wähle dir aber aus dem ganzen Volke tüchtige, gottesfürchtige, vertrauenswürdige und uneigennützige Männer und bestelle sie zu Vorgesetzten über je tausend, je hundert, je fünfzig und je zehn,
22damit sie den Leuten jederzeit Recht sprechen. Dann soll jede wichtige Sache vor dich gebracht werden, jede minder wichtige aber sollen sie selbst entscheiden; so wirst du dich entlasten und sie werden dich unterstützen.
23Wenn du dies so anordnest, und Gott es dir befiehlt, so wirst du es aushalten können, und alle diese Leute werden befriedigt zu ihrer Behausung zurückkehren.
24Da folgte Mose den Worten seines Schwiegervaters und führte alles aus, was er geraten hatte.
25Und Mose wählte aus der Gesamtheit der Israeliten tüchtige Männer aus und bestellte sie zu Häuptern über das Volk, zu Vorgesetzten über je tausend, je hundert, je fünfzig und je zehn.
26Und sie sprachen den Leuten jederzeit Recht; wichtige Sachen brachte man vor Mose, alle minder wichtigen Sachen aber entschieden sie selbst.
27Hierauf gab Mose seinem Schwiegervater das Geleite; der aber zog in seine Heimat.

1Y OYÓ Jethro, sacerdote de Madián, suegro de Moisés, todas las cosas que Dios había hecho con Moisés, y con Israel su pueblo, y cómo Jehová había sacado á Israel de Egipto:
2Y tomó Jethro, suegro de Moisés, á Séphora la mujer de Moisés, después que él la envió,
3Y á sus dos hijos; el uno se llamaba Gersom, porque dijo, Peregrino he sido en tierra ajena;
4Y el otro se llamaba Eliezer, porque dijo, El Dios de mi padre me ayudó, y me libró del cuchillo de Faraón.
5Y Jethro, el suegro de Moisés, con sus hijos y su mujer, llegó á Moisés en el desierto, donde tenía el campo junto al monte de Dios;
6Y dijo á Moisés: Yo tu suegro Jethro vengo á ti, con tu mujer, y sus dos hijos con ella.
7Y Moisés salió á recibir á su suegro, é inclinóse, y besólo: y preguntáronse el uno al otro cómo estaban, y vinieron á la tienda.
8Y Moisés contó á su suegro todas las cosas que Jehová había hecho á Faraón y á los Egipcios por amor de Israel, y todo el trabajo que habían pasado en el camino, y cómo los había librado Jehová.
9Y alegróse Jethro de todo el bien que Jehová había hecho á Israel, que lo había librado de mano de los Egipcios.
10Y Jethro dijo: Bendito sea Jehová, que os libró de mano de los Egipcios, y de la mano de Faraón, y que libró al pueblo de la mano de los Egipcios.
11Ahora conozco que Jehová es grande más que todos los dioses; hasta en lo que se ensoberbecieron contra ellos.
12Y tomó Jethro, suegro de Moisés, holocaustos y sacrificios para Dios: y vino Aarón y todos los ancianos de Israel á comer pan con el suegro de Moisés delante de Dios.
13Y aconteció que otro día se sentó Moisés á juzgar al pueblo; y el pueblo estuvo delante de Moisés desde la mañana hasta la tarde.
14Y viendo el suegro de Moisés todo lo que él hacía con el pueblo, dijo: ¿Qué es esto que haces tú con el pueblo? ¿por qué te sientas tú solo, y todo el pueblo está delante de ti desde la mañana hasta la tarde?
15Y Moisés respondió á su suegro: Porque el pueblo viene á mí para consultar á Dios:
16Cuando tienen negocios, vienen á mí; y yo juzgo entre el uno y el otro, y declaro las ordenanzas de Dios y sus leyes.
17Entonces el suegro de Moisés le dijo: No haces bien:
18Desfallecerás del todo, tú, y también este pueblo que está contigo; porque el negocio es demasiado pesado para ti; no podrás hacerlo tú solo.
19Oye ahora mi voz, yo te aconsejaré, y Dios será contigo. Está tú por el pueblo delante de Dios, y somete tú los negocios á Dios.
20Y enseña á ellos las ordenanzas y las leyes, y muéstrales el camino por donde anden, y lo que han de hacer.
21Además inquiere tú de entre todo el pueblo varones de virtud, temerosos de Dios, varones de verdad, que aborrezcan la avaricia; y constituirás á éstos sobre ellos caporales sobre mil, sobre ciento, sobre cincuenta y sobre diez.
22Los cuales juzgarán al pueblo en todo tiempo; y será que todo negocio grave lo traerán á ti, y ellos juzgarán todo negocio pequeño: alivia así la carga de sobre ti, y llevarla han ellos contigo.
23Si esto hicieres, y Dios te lo mandare, tú podrás persistir, y todo este pueblo se irá también en paz á su lugar.
24Y oyó Moisés la voz de su suegro, é hizo todo lo que dijo.
25Y escogió Moisés varones de virtud de todo Israel, y púsolos por cabezas sobre el pueblo, caporales sobre mil, sobre ciento, sobre cincuenta, y sobre diez;
26Y juzgaban al pueblo en todo tiempo: el negocio arduo traíanlo á Moisés, y ellos juzgaban todo negocio pequeño.
27Y despidió Moisés á su suegro, y fuése á su tierra.

1When Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father in law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, and that the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt;
2Then Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her back,
3And her two sons; of which the name of the one was Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien in a strange land:
4And the name of the other was Eliezer; for the God of my father, said he, was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh:
5And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into the wilderness, where he encamped at the mount of God:
6And he said unto Moses, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two sons with her.
7And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him; and they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.
8And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.
9And Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, whom he had delivered out of the hand of the Egyptians.
10And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.
11Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them.
12And Jethro, Moses’ father in law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father in law before God.
13And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people: and the people stood by Moses from the morning unto the evening.
14And when Moses’ father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even?
15And Moses said unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God:
16When they have a matter, they come unto me; and I judge between one and another, and I do make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.
17And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.
18Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
19Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:
20And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
21Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
22And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
23If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
24So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.
25And Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
26And they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves.
27And Moses let his father in law depart; and he went his way into his own land.

1Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses and for Israel his people, how the LORD had brought Israel out of Egypt.
2Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, received Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after he had sent her away,
3and her two sons. The name of one son was Gershom, for Moses said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land”.
4The name of the other was Eliezer, for he said, “My father’s God was my help and delivered me from Pharaoh’s sword.”
5Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with Moses’ sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness where he was encamped, at the Mountain of God.
6He said to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, have come to you with your wife, and her two sons with her.”
7Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed and kissed him. They asked each other of their welfare, and they came into the tent.
8Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardships that had come on them on the way, and how the LORD delivered them.
9Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, in that he had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians.
10Jethro said, “Blessed be the LORD, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.
11Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods because of the way that they treated people arrogantly.”
12Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God. Aaron came with all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God.
13On the next day, Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from the morning to the evening.
14When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said, “What is this thing that you do for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning to evening?”
15Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God.
16When they have a matter, they come to me, and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and his laws.”
17Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing that you do is not good.
18You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone.
19Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the causes to God.
20You shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and shall show them the way in which they must walk, and the work that they must do.
21Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men which fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
22Let them judge the people at all times. It shall be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they shall judge themselves. So shall it be easier for you, and they shall share the load with you.
23If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all these people also will go to their place in peace.”
