Y decíanles los hijos de Israel: Ojalá hubiéramos muerto por mano de Jehová en la tierra de Egipto, cuando nos sentábamos á las ollas de las carnes, cuando comíamos pan en hartura; pues nos habéis sacado á este desierto, para matar de hambre á toda esta multitud.

El Señor le dijo a Moisés: «Yo voy a hacer que les caigan alimentos del cielo. Cada uno podrá salir y recoger cuanto pueda comer ese día. Los probaré en esto, para ver si siguen mis órdenes.
Y Jehová dijo á Moisés: He aquí yo os haré llover pan del cielo; y el pueblo saldrá, y cogerá para cada un día, para que yo le pruebe si anda en mi ley, ó no.

En la mañana verán la gloria del Señor, quien ha oído sus quejas contra él. Sí, contra él es que ustedes se están quejando, pues nosotros sólo somos sus representantes. El Señor les dará a comer carne en la tarde y pan abundante por la mañana. Él ya escuchó sus quejas, pues no es contra nosotros que ustedes se han quejado, sino contra él. ¡Nosotros no somos nadie!
Y á la mañana veréis la gloria de Jehová; porque él ha oído vuestras murmuraciones contra Jehová; que nosotros, ¿qué somos, para que vosotros murmuréis contra nosotros?
And in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of the LORD; for that he heareth your murmurings against the LORD: and what are we, that ye murmur against us?

Y dijo Moisés: Jehová os dará á la tarde carne para comer, y á la mañana pan en hartura; por cuanto Jehová ha oído vuestras murmuraciones con que habéis murmurado contra él: que nosotros, ¿qué somos? vuestras murmuraciones no son contra nosotros, sino contra Jehová.
And Moses said, This shall be, when the LORD shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the LORD heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD.
Moses said, “Now the LORD will give you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to satisfy you, because the LORD hears your murmurings which you murmur against him. And who are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD.”
Luego Moisés le dijo a Aarón: ―Diles a todos los israelitas que se reúnan delante del Señor, pues él ha escuchado todas sus quejas.

And Moses spake unto Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before the LORD: for he hath heard your murmurings.

Mientras Aarón les hablaba, apareció repentinamente del desierto, de dentro de la nube que los guiaba, la majestuosa gloria del Señor.

Y el Señor le dijo a Moisés: «He oído sus quejas. Diles que en la tarde tendrán carne y en la mañana podrán saciarse con pan. Y sabrán que yo soy el Señor su Dios».

Yo he oído las murmuraciones de los hijos de Israel; háblales, diciendo: Entre las dos tardes comeréis carne, y por la mañana os hartaréis de pan, y sabréis que yo soy Jehová vuestro Dios.
I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.

Aquella tarde llegó una gran cantidad de codornices y cubrió el campo. Al día siguiente, todo el desierto, alrededor del campamento, amaneció mojado de rocío,
Y venida la tarde subieron codornices que cubrieron el real; y á la mañana descendió rocío en derredor del real.
And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host.

y cuando desapareció el rocío, quedó sobre el suelo una cosa menuda parecida a la escarcha.

And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground.

Cuando los israelitas vieron aquello, se preguntaban unos a otros: ―¿Qué es esto? Y Moisés les dijo: ―Es el pan que el Señor les da.
Y viéndolo los hijos de Israel, se dijeron unos á otros: ¿Qué es esto? porque no sabían qué era. Entonces Moisés les dijo: Es el pan que Jehová os da para comer.
And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.

El Señor ha dicho que cada uno debe recoger cuanto sea necesario para su familia, más o menos dos litros por persona.
Esto es lo que Jehová ha mandado: cogeréis de él cada uno según pudiere comer; un gomer por cabeza, conforme al número de vuestras personas, tomaréis cada uno para los que están en su tienda.
This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take ye every man for them which are in his tents.

El pueblo de Israel empezó a recogerlo.
Y los hijos de Israel lo hicieron así: y recogieron unos más, otros menos:

Había suficiente para todos, unos dos litros por persona. A los que juntaron mucho nada les sobró, y a los que juntaron poco, nada les faltó. Cada familia tuvo lo necesario.
Y medíanlo por gomer, y no sobraba al que había recogido mucho, ni faltaba al que había recogido poco: cada uno recogió conforme á lo que había de comer.

Pero hubo algunos que no prestaron atención, y guardaron para el día siguiente; y cuando miraron lo que habían guardado, estaba lleno de gusanos. ¡Se les había podrido! Moisés se enojó mucho con ellos.
Mas ellos no obedecieron á Moisés, sino que algunos dejaron de ello para otro día, y crió gusanos, y pudrióse; y enojóse contra ellos Moisés.
Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.

De modo que recogían alimento cada mañana, según sus necesidades. Cuando el sol calentaba la tierra, el alimento se derretía y desaparecía.

And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.

El sexto día recogieron el doble de lo acostumbrado, unos cuatro litros. Los dirigentes del pueblo, al ver esto, fueron y le informaron a Moisés.
En el sexto día recogieron doblada comida, dos gomeres para cada uno: y todos los príncipes de la congregación vinieron á Moisés, y se lo hicieron saber.

Entonces Moisés les dijo: ―El Señor ha señalado el sábado como día de reposo, de solemne reposo, en el que deben apartarse de sus tareas diarias. Por eso es que deben preparar hoy todo lo que necesiten, y guardar lo que sobre para mañana. Todo lo que deban cocinar o hervir deben hacerlo hoy, y lo que sobre deben guardarlo para mañana.
Y él les dijo: Esto es lo que ha dicho Jehová: Mañana es el santo sábado, el reposo de Jehová: lo que hubiereis de cocer, cocedlo hoy, y lo que hubiereis de cocinar, cocinadlo; y todo lo que os sobrare, guardadlo para mañana.
And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.
He said to them, “This is that which the LORD has spoken, ‘Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD. Bake that which you want to bake, and boil that which you want to boil; and all that remains over lay up for yourselves to be kept until the morning.’”
Los israelitas obedecieron a Moisés, y guardaron para el siguiente día toda la comida que les sobró. A la mañana siguiente el alimento estaba en buen estado, sin gusanos y sin mal olor.
Y ellos lo guardaron hasta la mañana, según que Moisés había mandado, y no se pudrió, ni hubo en él gusano.
And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.

Y Moisés les dijo: ―Este es su alimento para hoy, porque es día de reposo, consagrado al Señor. Hoy no habrá alimento en el campo.

And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the LORD: to day ye shall not find it in the field.

Recojan alimento durante seis días, pero el séptimo día es día de reposo, y no hallarán nada.

Pero algunos salieron a recoger alimento, aun cuando era día de reposo, pero nada encontraron.

Y el Señor le dijo a Moisés: ―¿Hasta cuándo se niega este pueblo a obedecerme? ¿No comprenden que les doy el doble en el sexto día para que tengan suficiente para dos días? Les he dado el séptimo día como día de reposo; deben permanecer en sus casas, y no salir a buscar alimento en ese día.
Y Jehová dijo á Moisés: ¿Hasta cuándo no querréis guardar mis mandamientos y mis leyes?
And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?

Mirad que Jehová os dió el sábado, y por eso os da en el sexto día pan para dos días. Estése, pues, cada uno en su estancia, y nadie salga de su lugar en el séptimo día.
See, for that the LORD hath given you the sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

Y el alimento recibió el nombre de maná, que significa: «¿Qué es esto?». Era como semilla de cilantro, pero blanco, con sabor como a pan de miel.

Moisés les comunicó a los israelitas estas otras órdenes del Señor: Debían recoger unos dos litros de maná y guardarlo de muestra para siempre, para que las generaciones posteriores pudieran conocer el pan con que el Señor los había alimentado en el desierto, después de sacarlos de Egipto.
Y dijo Moisés: Esto es lo que Jehová ha mandado: Henchirás un gomer de él para que se guarde para vuestros descendientes, á fin de que vean el pan que yo os dí á comer en el desierto, cuando yo os saqué de la tierra de Egipto.
And Moses said, This is the thing which the LORD commandeth, Fill an omer of it to be kept for your generations; that they may see the bread wherewith I have fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt.

Moisés le dijo a Aarón: ―Consigue una vasija y mete en ella los dos litros de maná. Luego guarda la vasija en la presencia del Señor, frente al cofre del pacto. Allí deberá permanecer de generación en generación.
Y dijo Moisés á Aarón: Toma un vaso, y pon en él un gomer lleno de maná, y ponlo delante de Jehová, para que sea guardado para vuestros descendientes.

Aarón hizo lo que el Señor le había ordenado por medio de Moisés. Así que guardó la vasija con el maná frente al cofre del pacto.
Y Aarón lo puso delante del Testimonio para guardarlo, como Jehová lo mandó á Moisés.

La medida que usaban para medir el maná se llamaba gómer, y era aproximadamente de dos litros, y equivalía a la décima parte de otra medida llamada efa.
