1Donc, le douzième mois, qui est le mois d'Adar, le treizième jour du mois, où l'exécution de l'ordre du roi et de son édit venaient à échéance le jour même où les ennemis des juifs avaient espéré prendre le dessus sur eux ce fut le contraire qui eut lieu, les juifs allant, eux, prendre le dessus sur ceux qui les haïssaient.
2Les juifs se rassemblèrent dans leurs villes respectives, sur toute l'étendue des provinces du roi Assuérus, pour s'attaquer à ceux qui complotaient leur perte: personne ne leur tint tête, car ils inspiraient de la terreur à tous les peuples.
3Et tous les préfets des provinces, les satrapes, les gouverneurs, les fonctionnaires du roi prêtèrent main-forte aux juifs, car la crainte de Mardochée s'était emparée d'eux.
4C'est que Mardochée était influent dans le palais du roi, et sa renommée se répandait dans toutes les provinces, tant la personne de Mardochée allait en grandissant.
5Les juifs exercèrent donc des sévices parmi tous leurs ennemis, en frappant du glaive, en tuant, en détruisant, et ils traitèrent à leur gré ceux qui les haïssaient.
6Dans Suse, la capitale, les juifs tuèrent ainsi et exterminèrent cinq cents hommes;
7en outre, Parchandata, Dalphôn, et Aspata,
8Porata, Adalia et Aridata,
9Parmachta, Arissai, Aridai et Vaïzata,
10les dix fils d'Aman, fils de Hamedata, persécuteur des juifs, ils les mirent à mort; mais ils ne portèrent pas la main sur le butin.
11Le jour même, le compte des victimes tombées à Suse, la capitale, fut communiqué au roi;
12et celui-ci dit à la reine Esther: "A Suse, la capitale, les juifs ont tué et exterminé cinq cents hommes ainsi que les dix fils d'Aman: que n'auront-ils pas fait dans les autres provinces du roi! As-tu encore une demande à présenter, elle te sera accordée; un souhait à exprimer, il sera réalisé."
13Esther répondit au roi: "Si tel est le bon plaisir du roi, qu'il soit permis aux juifs, dans Suse, de faire demain encore ce qu'ils ont fait aujourd'hui, et que les dix fils d'Aman soient pendus à la potence."
14Le roi ordonna de procéder de la sorte: un édit fut publié à Suse, et on pendit les dix fils d'Aman.
15Les juifs, présents à Suse, se rassemblèrent donc encore le quatorzième jour du mois d'Adar et firent périr à Suse trois cents hommes; mais ils ne touchèrent pas au butin.
16Les autres juifs, établis dans des provinces du roi, s'étaient rassemblés pour défendre leur vie et se mettre à l'abri de leurs ennemis et avaient tué soixante-quinze mille de ceux qui les haïssaient, sans mettre la main sur le butin.
17Cela s'était passé le treizième jour du mois d'Adar; puis ils avaient pris du repos; le quatorzième jour et en avaient fait un jour de festin et de joie;
18tandis que les juifs, dans Suse, s'étaient rassemblés le treizième et le quatorzième jours et avaient pris du repos le quinzième jour, dont ils avaient fait un jour de festin et de joie.
19C'est pourquoi les juifs des campagnes, qui habitent des villes ouvertes, font du quatorzième jour du mois d'Adar un jour de joie, de festin, un jour de fête, et s'envoient réciproquement des cadeaux.
20Mardochée mit par écrit ces événements et expédia des lettres à tous les juifs, proches ou éloignés, dans toutes les provinces du roi Assuérus,
21leur enjoignant de s'engager à observer, année par année, le quatorzième jour du mois d'Adar et le quinzième jour,
22c'est-à-dire les jours où les juifs avaient obtenu rémission de leurs ennemis, et le mois où leur tristesse s'était changée en joie et leur deuil en fête à en faire des jours de festin et de réjouissances et une occasion d'envoyer des présents l'un à l'autre et des dons aux pauvres.
23Les juifs érigèrent en coutume ce qu'ils avaient commencé de faire et ce que Mardochée leur avait recommandé par écrit;
24car Aman, fils de Hamedata, l'Agaghite, persécuteur de tous les juifs, avait formé le dessein d'anéantir les juifs et consulté le Pour, c'est-à-dire le sort, à l'effet de les perdre et de les détruire;
25et quand la chose parvint à la connaissance du roi, il donna l'ordre écrit que le mauvais dessein qu'Aman avait conçu contre les juifs retombât sur sa tête et qu'on le pendît, lui et ses fils, au gibet.
26C'est pourquoi on appela ces jours-là POURIM, du nom de Pour; et c'est pourquoi aussi, en vertu de toutes les instructions de cette missive, de tout ce qu'ils avaient vu eux-mêmes et de ce qui leur était advenu,
27les juifs reconnurent et acceptèrent pour eux, pour leurs descendants et pour tous ceux qui se rallieraient à eux l'obligation immuable de fêter ces deux jours-là, suivant la teneur des écrits et à la date fixée, année par année,
28de commémorer et de célébrer ces jours de génération en génération, dans chaque famille, dans chaque province et dans chaque ville, et de ne pas laisser disparaitre ces jours de Pourim du milieu des juifs ni s'en effacer le souvenir du milieu de leurs descendants.
29Puis la reine Esther, fille d'Abihaïl, et le juif Mardochée écrivirent de nouveau, usant de toute leur autorité pour donner force de loi à cette seconde missive de Pourim.
30Et on expédia des lettres à tous les juifs dans les cent vingt-sept provinces de l'empire d'Assuérus, comme un message de paix et de vérité,
31à l'effet d'instituer ces jours de Pourim à leur date, comme le juif Mardochée et la reine Esther les avaient acceptés pour leur compte et pour le compte de leurs descendants, en ce qui concerne les jeûnes et les supplications y afférentes.
32L'ordre d'Esther fortifia ces règles relatives à Pourim; et il fut consigné dans un document écrit.

1Y EN el mes duodécimo, que es el mes de Adar, á trece del mismo, en el que tocaba se ejecutase el mandamiento del rey y su ley, el mismo día en que esperaban los enemigos de los Judíos enseñorearse de ellos, fué lo contrario; porque los Judíos se enseñorearon de los que los aborrecían.
2Los Judíos se juntaron en sus ciudades en todas las provincias del rey Assuero, para meter mano sobre los que habían procurado su mal: y nadie se puso delante de ellos, porque el temor de ellos había caído sobre todos los pueblos.
3Y todos los príncipes de las provincias, y los virreyes, y capitanes, y oficiales del rey, ensalzaban á los Judíos; porque el temor de Mardochêo había caído sobre ellos.
4Porque Mardochêo era grande en la casa del rey, y su fama iba por todas las provincias; pues el varón Mardochêo iba engrandeciéndose.
5E hirieron los Judíos á todos sus enemigos con plaga de espada, y de mortandad, y de perdición; é hicieron en sus enemigos á su voluntad.
6Y en Susán capital del reino, mataron y destruyeron los Judíos á quinientos hombres.
7Mataron entonces á Phorsandatha, y á Dalphón, y á Asphatha,
8Y á Phoratha y á Ahalía, y á Aridatha,

12Y dijo el rey á la reina Esther: En Susán, capital del reino, han muerto los Judíos y destruído á quinientos hombres, y á diez hijos de Amán; ¿qué habrán hecho en las otras provincias del rey? ¿Cuál pues es tu petición, y te será concedida? ¿ó qué más es tu demanda, y será hecho?
13Y respondió Esther: Si place al rey, concédase también mañana á los Judíos en Susán, que hagan conforme á la ley de hoy; y que cuelguen en la horca á los diez hijos de Amán.
14Y mandó el rey que se hiciese así: y dióse la orden en Susán, y colgaron á los diez hijos de Amán.
15Y los Judíos que estaban en Susán, se juntaron también el catorce del mes de Adar, y mataron en Susán trescientos hombres: mas en la presa no metieron su mano.
16En cuanto á los otros Judíos que estaban en las provincias del rey, también se juntaron y pusiéronse en defensa de su vida, y tuvieron reposo de sus enemigos, y mataron de sus contrarios setenta y cinco mil; mas en la presa no metieron su mano.
17En el día trece del mes de Adar fué esto; y reposaron en el día catorce del mismo, é hiciéronlo día de banquete y de alegría.
18Mas los Judíos que estaban en Susán se juntaron en el trece y en el catorce del mismo mes; y al quince del mismo reposaron, é hicieron aquel día día de banquete y de regocijo.
19Por tanto los Judíos aldeanos que habitan en las villas sin muro, hacen á los catorce del mes de Adar el día de alegría y de banquete, y buen día, y de enviar porciones cada uno á su vecino.
20Y escribió Mardochêo estas cosas, y envió letras á todos los Judíos que estaban en todas las provincias del rey Assuero, cercanos y distantes,
21Ordenándoles que celebrasen el día décimocuarto del mes de Adar, y el décimoquinto del mismo, cada un año,
22Como días en que los Judíos tuvieron reposo de sus enemigos, y el mes que se les tornó de tristeza en alegría, y de luto en día bueno; que los hiciesen días de banquete y de gozo, y de enviar porciones cada uno á su vecino, y dádivas á los pobres.
23Y los Judíos aceptaron hacer, según habían comenzado, lo que les escribió Mardochêo.
24Porque Amán hijo de Amadatha, Agageo, enemigo de todos los Judíos, había ideado contra los Judíos para destruirlos, y echó Pur, que quiere decir suerte, para consumirlos y acabar con ellos.
25Mas como Esther vino á la presencia del rey, él intimó por carta: El perverso designio que aquél trazó contra los Judíos, recaiga sobre su cabeza; y cuélguenlo á él y á sus hijos en la horca.
26Por esto llamaron á estos días Purim, del nombre Pur. Por todas las palabras pues de esta carta, y por lo que ellos vieron sobre esto, y lo que llegó á su noticia,
27Establecieron y tomaron los Judíos sobre sí, y sobre su simiente, y sobre todos los allegados á ellos, y no será traspasado, el celebrar estos dos días según está escrito en orden á ellos, y conforme á su tiempo cada un año;
28Y que estos dos días serían en memoria, y celebrados en todas las naciones, y familias, y provincias, y ciudades. Estos días de Purim no pasarán de entre los Judíos, y la memoria de ellos no cesará de su simiente.
29Y la reina Esther hija de Abihail, y Mardochêo Judío, escribieron con toda eficacia, para confirmar esta segunda carta de Purim.
30Y envió Mardochêo letras á todos los Judíos, á las ciento veintisiete provincias del rey Assuero, con palabras de paz y de verdad,
31Para confirmar estos días de Purim en sus tiempos señalados, según les había constituído Mardochêo Judío y la reina Esther, y como habían ellos tomado sobre sí y sobre su simiente, para conmemorar el fin de los ayunos y de su clamor.
32Y el mandamiento de Esther confirmó estas palabras dadas acerca de Purim, y escribióse en el libro.

1Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king’s commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that hated them;)
2The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their hurt: and no man could withstand them; for the fear of them fell upon all people.
3And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews; because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.
4For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces: for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater.
5Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and slaughter, and destruction, and did what they would unto those that hated them.
6And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men.
7And Parshandatha, and Dalphon, and Aspatha,
8And Poratha, and Adalia, and Aridatha,
9And Parmashta, and Arisai, and Aridai, and Vajezatha,
10The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews, slew they; but on the spoil laid they not their hand.
11On that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace was brought before the king.
12And the king said unto Esther the queen, The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of Haman; what have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done.
13Then said Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do to morrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.
14And the king commanded it so to be done: and the decree was given at Shushan; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.
15For the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and slew three hundred men at Shushan; but on the prey they laid not their hand.
16But the other Jews that were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, and stood for their lives, and had rest from their enemies, and slew of their foes seventy and five thousand, but they laid not their hands on the prey,
17On the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of the same rested they, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
18But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof, and on the fourteenth thereof; and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.
19Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.
20And Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus, both nigh and far,
21To stablish this among them, that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day of the same, yearly,
22As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.
23And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written unto them;
24Because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is, the lot, to consume them, and to destroy them;
25But when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he devised against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.
26Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name of Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and which had come unto them,
27The Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing, and according to their appointed time every year;
28And that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor the memorial of them perish from their seed.
29Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote with all authority, to confirm this second letter of Purim.
30And he sent the letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,
31To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had decreed for themselves and for their seed, the matters of the fastings and their cry.
32And the decree of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.

1Now in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the month, when the king’s commandment and his decree came near to be put in execution, on the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to conquer them, (but it turned out that the opposite happened, that the Jews conquered those who hated them),
2the Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, to lay hands on those who wanted to harm them. No one could withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen on all the people.
3All the princes of the provinces, the local governors, the governors, and those who did the king’s business helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them.
4For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai grew greater and greater.
5The Jews struck all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they wanted to those who hated them.
6In the citadel of Susa, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men.
7They killed Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,

25but when this became known to the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked plan, which he had planned against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.
26Therefore they called these days “Purim”, from the word “Pur.” Therefore because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and that which had come to them,
27the Jews established and imposed on themselves, on their descendants, and on all those who joined themselves to them, so that it should not fail that they would keep these two days according to what was written and according to its appointed time every year;
28and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor their memory perish from their offspring.
29Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew wrote with all authority to confirm this second letter of Purim.
30He sent letters to all the Jews in the hundred twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus with words of peace and truth,
31to confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had decreed, and as they had imposed upon themselves and their descendants in the matter of the fastings and their mourning.
32The commandment of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.
