Vanità delle vanità, disse l'Ecclesiaste: vanità delle vanità, e tutte le cose sono vanità.

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.”
Che resta all'uomo di tutte quante le fatiche, ond'ei si carica sotto del sole?
¿Qué provecho tiene el hombre de todo su trabajo con que se afana debajo del sol?
What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?
What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?
Una generazione passa, un'altra le viene appresso, e la terra sta sempre.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

E mi messi in cuore di fare per mezzo della sapienza studio, e ricerca sopra tutte le cose, che si fanno sotto del sole. Questa penosissima occupazione la ha data Iddio a figliuoli degli uomini, perché vi si impieghino.
Y dí mi corazón á inquirir y buscar con sabiduría sobre todo lo que se hace debajo del cielo: este penoso trabajo dió Dios á los hijos de los hombres, en que se ocupen.
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.
I said to myself, “Behold, I have obtained for myself great wisdom above all who were before me in Jerusalem. Yes, my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.”
Ed ho applicato il mio cuore ad apprendere la prudenza, e la dottrina, e gli errori, e le follie; ed ho riconosciuto, che questo stesso è affanno, e tormento dello spirito:
Y dí mi corazón á conocer la sabiduría, y también á entender las locuras y los desvaríos: conocí que aun esto era aflicción de espíritu.
