1*Et maintenant, Israël, écoute les statuts et les ordonnances que je vous enseigne, pour les pratiquer, afin que vous viviez, et que vous entriez dans le pays que l’Éternel, le Dieu de vos pères, vous donne, et que vous le possédiez.
2Vous n’ajouterez rien à la parole que je vous commande, et vous n’en retrancherez rien, afin de garder les commandements de l’Éternel, votre Dieu, que je vous commande.
3Vos yeux ont vu ce que l’Éternel a fait à cause de Baal-Péor ; car tout homme qui était allé après Baal-Péor, l’Éternel, ton Dieu, l’a détruit du milieu de toi ;
4et vous qui vous êtes tenus attachés à l’Éternel, votre Dieu, vous êtes tous vivants aujourd’hui.
5Regarde, je vous ai enseigné les statuts et les ordonnances, comme l’Éternel, mon Dieu, me l’a commandé, afin que vous fassiez ainsi au milieu du pays où vous allez entrer pour le posséder.
6Et vous les garderez et les pratiquerez ; car ce sera là votre sagesse et votre intelligence aux yeux des peuples qui entendront tous ces statuts et diront : Quel peuple sage et intelligent que cette grande nation !
7Car quelle est la grande nation qui ait Dieu près d’elle, comme l’Éternel, notre Dieu, [est près de nous], dans tout ce pour quoi nous l’invoquons ?
8Et quelle est la grande nation qui ait des statuts et des ordonnances justes, comme toute cette loi que je mets aujourd’hui devant vous ?
9Seulement, prends garde à toi et garde soigneusement ton âme, de peur que tu n’oublies les choses que tes yeux ont vues (et afin que, tous les jours de ta vie, elles ne s’éloignent pas de ton cœur, mais que tu les fasses connaître à tes fils et aux fils de tes fils),
10le jour où tu te tins devant l’Éternel, ton Dieu, à Horeb, quand l’Éternel me dit : Assemble-moi le peuple, et je leur ferai entendre mes paroles, qu’ils apprendront pour me craindre tous les jours qu’ils seront vivants sur la terre, et qu’ils enseigneront à leurs fils ;
11alors vous vous êtes approchés et vous vous êtes tenus au bas de la montagne (et la montagne était brûlante de feu jusqu’au cœur des cieux,… ténèbres, nuées, et profonde obscurité),
12et l’Éternel vous parla du milieu du feu ; vous entendiez la voix de [ses] paroles, mais vous n’avez vu aucune forme, seulement [vous entendiez] une voix.
13Et il vous déclara son alliance, qu’il vous commanda de pratiquer, les dix paroles ; et il les écrivit sur deux tables de pierre.
14Et l’Éternel me commanda, en ce temps-là, de vous enseigner des statuts et des ordonnances, pour que vous les pratiquiez dans le pays dans lequel vous allez passer pour le posséder.
15Et vous prendrez bien garde à vos âmes (car vous n’avez vu aucune forme au jour où l’Éternel vous parla du milieu du feu, à Horeb),
16de peur que vous ne vous corrompiez, et que vous ne vous fassiez quelque image taillée, la forme d’une image quelconque, la figure d’un mâle ou d’une femelle,
17la figure de quelque bête qui soit sur la terre, la figure de quelque oiseau ailé qui vole dans les cieux,
18la figure de quelque reptile du sol, la figure de quelque poisson qui soit dans les eaux, au-dessous de la terre ;
19et de peur que tu ne lèves tes yeux vers les cieux et que tu ne voies le soleil, et la lune et les étoiles, toute l’armée des cieux, et que tu ne te laisses séduire et ne te prosternes devant eux, et ne les serves : lesquels l’Éternel, ton Dieu, a donnés en partage à tous les peuples, sous tous les cieux.
20Mais vous, l’Éternel vous a pris, et vous a fait sortir d’Égypte, de la fournaise de fer, afin que vous soyez le peuple de sa possession, comme [vous l’êtes] aujourd’hui.
21Et l’Éternel s’irrita contre moi, à cause de vous, et il jura que je ne passerais pas le Jourdain et que je n’entrerais pas dans le bon pays que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne en héritage ;
22car, pour moi, je mourrai dans ce pays, je ne passerai pas le Jourdain ; mais vous allez le passer, et vous posséderez ce bon pays.
23Prenez garde à vous, de peur que vous n’oubliiez l’alliance de l’Éternel, votre Dieu, qu’il a traitée avec vous, et que vous ne vous fassiez une image taillée, la forme d’une chose quelconque, – ce que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’a commandé [de ne pas faire].
24Car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, est un feu consumant, un ✶Dieu jaloux.
25Quand tu auras engendré des fils et des petits-fils, et que vous aurez vécu longtemps dans le pays, et que vous vous serez corrompus, et que vous aurez fait une image taillée, la forme d’une chose quelconque, et que vous aurez fait ce qui est mauvais aux yeux de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, pour le provoquer à colère,
26j’appelle aujourd’hui à témoin contre vous les cieux et la terre, que vous périrez bientôt entièrement de dessus le pays où, en passant le Jourdain, vous [entrez] afin de le posséder ; vous n’y prolongerez pas vos jours, car vous serez entièrement détruits.
27Et l’Éternel vous dispersera parmi les peuples ; et vous resterez en petit nombre parmi les nations où l’Éternel vous mènera.
28Et vous servirez là des dieux, ouvrage de mains d’homme, du bois et de la pierre, qui ne voient, ni n’entendent, ni ne mangent, ni ne flairent.
29Et de là vous chercherez l’Éternel, ton Dieu ; et tu le trouveras, si tu le cherches de tout ton cœur et de toute ton âme.
30Dans ta détresse, et lorsque toutes ces choses t’auront atteint, à la fin des jours, tu retourneras à l’Éternel, ton Dieu, et tu écouteras sa voix.
31Car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, est un ✶Dieu miséricordieux, il ne t’abandonnera pas et ne te détruira pas ; et il n’oubliera pas l’alliance de tes pères, qu’il leur a jurée.
32Car, enquiers-toi donc des premiers jours qui ont été avant toi, depuis le jour où Dieu a créé l’homme sur la terre, et d’un bout des cieux jusqu’à l’autre bout des cieux, si [jamais] il est rien arrivé comme cette grande chose, et s’il a été rien entendu de semblable.
33Est-ce qu’un peuple a entendu la voix de Dieu parlant du milieu du feu, comme toi tu l’as entendue, et est demeuré en vie ?
34Ou Dieu a-t-il essayé de venir prendre pour lui une nation du milieu d’une nation, par des épreuves, par des signes, et par des prodiges, et par la guerre, et à main forte, et à bras étendu, et par de grandes terreurs, selon tout ce que l’Éternel, votre Dieu, a fait pour vous en Égypte, sous tes yeux ?
35Cela t’a été montré, afin que tu connaisses que l’Éternel est Dieu, et qu’il n’y en a point d’autre que lui.
36Des cieux, il t’a fait entendre sa voix pour t’instruire, et, sur la terre, il t’a fait voir son grand feu, et tu as entendu ses paroles du milieu du feu.
37Et parce qu’il a aimé tes pères, et qu’il a choisi leur semence après eux, il t’a fait sortir d’Égypte par sa face, par sa grande puissance,
38pour déposséder devant toi des nations plus grandes et plus fortes que toi, pour t’introduire dans leur pays, afin de te le donner en héritage, comme [il paraît] aujourd’hui.
39Sache donc aujourd’hui, et médite en ton cœur, que l’Éternel est Dieu dans les cieux en haut, et sur la terre en bas : il n’y en a point d’autre.
40Et garde ses statuts et ses commandements que je te commande aujourd’hui, afin que tu prospères, toi et tes fils après toi, et que tu prolonges tes jours sur la terre que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne, pour toujours.
41*Alors Moïse sépara trois villes, en deçà du Jourdain, vers le soleil levant,
42afin que l’homicide qui aurait tué son prochain sans le savoir, et qui ne l’aurait pas haï auparavant, s’y enfuie, et que, s’enfuyant dans l’une de ces villes-là, il vive :
43Bétser, dans le désert, sur le plateau, [qui est] aux Rubénites ; et Ramoth, en Galaad, [qui est] aux Gadites ; et Golan, en Basan, [qui est] aux Manassites.
44*Et c’est ici la loi que Moïse plaça devant les fils d’Israël ;
45ce sont ici les témoignages, et les statuts, et les ordonnances que Moïse exposa aux fils d’Israël, à leur sortie d’Égypte,
46en deçà du Jourdain, dans la vallée vis-à-vis de Beth-Péor, dans le pays de Sihon, roi des Amoréens, qui habitait à Hesbon, que Moïse et les fils d’Israël frappèrent à leur sortie d’Égypte ;
47et ils possédèrent son pays, et le pays d’Og, roi de Basan, deux rois des Amoréens, qui étaient en deçà du Jourdain, vers le soleil levant,
48depuis Aroër qui est sur le bord du torrent de l’Arnon, jusqu’à la montagne de Scion qui est l’Hermon,
49et toute la plaine en deçà du Jourdain, vers le levant et jusqu’à la mer de la plaine, sous les pentes du Pisga.

1AHORA pues, oh Israel, oye los estatutos y derechos que yo os enseño, para que los ejecutéis, y viváis, y entréis, y poseáis la tierra que Jehová el Dios de vuestros padres te da.
2No añadiréis á la palabra que yo os mando, ni disminuiréis de ella, para que guardéis los mandamientos de Jehová vuestro Dios que yo os ordeno.
3Vuestros ojos vieron lo que hizo Jehová con motivo de Baal-peor; que á todo hombre que fué en pos de Baal-peor destruyó Jehová tu Dios de en medio de ti.
4Mas vosotros que os allegasteis á Jehová vuestro Dios, todos estáis vivos hoy.
5Mirad, yo os he enseñado estatutos y derechos, como Jehová mi Dios me mandó, para que hagáis así en medio de la tierra en la cual entráis para poseerla.
6Guardadlos, pues, y ponedlos por obra: porque esta es vuestra sabiduría y vuestra inteligencia en ojos de los pueblos, los cuales oirán todos estos estatutos, y dirán: Ciertamente pueblo sabio y entendido, gente grande es ésta.
7Porque ¿qué gente grande hay que tenga los dioses cercanos á sí, como lo está Jehová nuestro Dios en todo cuanto le pedimos?
8Y ¿qué gente grande hay que tenga estatutos y derechos justos, como es toda esta ley que yo pongo hoy delante de vosotros?
9Por tanto, guárdate, y guarda tu alma con diligencia, que no te olvides de las cosas que tus ojos han visto, ni se aparten de tu corazón todos los días de tu vida: y enseñarlas has á tus hijos, y á los hijos de tus hijos;
10El día que estuviste delante de Jehová tu Dios en Horeb, cuando Jehová me dijo: Júntame el pueblo, para que yo les haga oir mis palabras, las cuales aprenderán, para temerme todos los días que vivieren sobre la tierra: y las enseñarán á sus hijos;
11Y os llegasteis, y os pusisteis al pie del monte; y el monte ardía en fuego hasta en medio de los cielos con tinieblas, nube, y oscuridad.
12Y habló Jehová con vosotros de en medio del fuego: oisteis la voz de sus palabras, mas á excepción de oir la voz, ninguna figura visteis:
13Y él os anunció su pacto, el cual os mandó poner por obra, las diez palabras; y escribiólas en dos tablas de piedra.
14A mí también me mandó Jehová entonces enseñaros los estatutos y derechos, para que los pusieseis por obra en la tierra á la cual pasáis para poseerla.
15Guardad pues mucho vuestras almas: pues ninguna figura visteis el día que Jehová habló con vosotros de en medio del fuego:
16Porque no os corrompáis, y hagáis para vosotros escultura, imagen de figura alguna, efigie de varón ó hembra,
17Figura de algún animal que sea en la tierra, figura de ave alguna alada que vuele por el aire,
18Figura de ningún animal que vaya arrastrando por la tierra, figura de pez alguno que haya en el agua debajo de la tierra:
19Y porque alzando tus ojos al cielo, y viendo el sol y la luna y las estrellas, y todo el ejército del cielo, no seas incitado, y te inclines á ellos, y les sirvas; que Jehová tu Dios los ha concedido á todos los pueblos debajo de todos los cielos.
20Empero á vosotros Jehová os tomó, y os ha sacado del horno de hierro, de Egipto, para que le seáis por pueblo de heredad como en este día.
21Y Jehová se enojó contra mí sobre vuestros negocios, y juró que yo no pasaría el Jordán, ni entraría en la buena tierra, que Jehová tu Dios te da por heredad.
22Así que yo voy á morir en esta tierra; y no paso el Jordán: mas vosotros pasaréis, y poseeréis aquella buena tierra.
23Guardaos no os olvidéis del pacto de Jehová vuestro Dios, que él estableció con vosotros, y os hagáis escultura ó imagen de cualquier cosa, que Jehová tu Dios te ha vedado.
24Porque Jehová tu Dios es fuego que consume, Dios celoso.
25Cuando hubiereis engendrado hijos y nietos, y hubiereis envejecido en la tierra, y os corrompiereis, é hiciereis escultura ó imagen de cualquier cosa, é hiciereis mal en ojos de Jehová vuestro Dios, para enojarlo;
26Yo pongo hoy por testigos al cielo y á la tierra, que presto pereceréis totalmente de la tierra hacia la cual pasáis el Jordán para poseerla: no estaréis en ella largos días sin que seáis destruídos.
27Y Jehová os esparcirá entre los pueblos, y quedaréis pocos en número entre las gentes á las cuales os llevará Jehová:
28Y serviréis allí á dioses hechos de manos de hombres, á madera y á piedra, que no ven, ni oyen, ni comen, ni huelen.
29Mas si desde allí buscares á Jehová tu Dios, lo hallarás, si lo buscares de todo tu corazón y de toda tu alma.
30Cuando estuviereis en angustia, y te alcanzaren todas estas cosas, si en los postreros días te volvieres á Jehová tu Dios, y oyeres su voz;
31Porque Dios misericordioso es Jehová tu Dios; no te dejará, ni te destruirá, ni se olvidará del pacto de tus padres que les juró.
32Porque pregunta ahora de los tiempos pasados, que han sido antes de ti, desde el día que crió Dios al hombre sobre la tierra, y desde el un cabo del cielo al otro, si se ha hecho cosa semejante á esta gran cosa, ó se haya oído otra como ella.
33¿Ha oído pueblo la voz de Dios, que hablase de en medio del fuego, como tú la has oído, y vivido?
34¿O ha Dios probado á venir á tomar para sí gente de en medio de otra gente, con pruebas, con señales, con milagros, y con guerra, y mano fuerte, y brazo extendido, y grandes espantos, según todas las cosas que hizo con vosotros Jehová vuestro Dios en Egipto ante tus ojos?
35A ti te fué mostrado, para que supieses que Jehová él es Dios; no hay más fuera de él.
36De los cielos te hizo oir su voz, para enseñarte: y sobre la tierra te mostró su gran fuego: y has oído sus palabras de en medio del fuego.
37Y por cuanto él amó á tus padres, escogió su simiente después de ellos, y sacóte delante de sí de Egipto con su gran poder;
38Para echar de delante de ti gentes grandes y más fuertes que tú, y para introducirte, y darte su tierra por heredad, como hoy.
39Aprende pues hoy, y reduce á tu corazón que Jehová él es el Dios arriba en el cielo, y abajo sobre la tierra; no hay otro.
40Y guarda sus estatutos y sus mandamientos, que yo te mando hoy, para que te vaya bien á ti y á tus hijos después de ti, y prolongues tus días sobre la tierra que Jehová tu Dios te da para siempre.
41Entonces apartó Moisés tres ciudades de esta parte del Jordán al nacimiento del sol,
42Para que huyese allí el homicida que matase á su prójimo por yerro, sin haber tenido enemistad con él desde ayer ni antes de ayer; y que huyendo á una de estas ciudades salvara la vida:
43A Beser en el desierto, en tierra de la llanura, de los Rubenitas; y á Ramoth en Galaad, de los Gaditas; y á Golán en Basán, de los de Manasés.
44Esta, pues, es la ley que Moisés propuso delante de los hijos de Israel.
45Estos son los testimonios, y los estatutos, y los derechos, que Moisés notificó á los hijos de Israel, cuando hubieron salido de Egipto;
46De esta parte del Jordán, en el valle delante de Beth-peor, en la tierra de Sehón rey de los Amorrheos, que habitaba en Hesbón, al cual hirió Moisés con los hijos de Israel, cuando hubieron salido de Egipto:
47Y poseyeron su tierra, y la tierra de Og rey de Basán; dos reyes de los Amorrheos que estaban de esta parte del Jordán, al nacimiento del sol:
48Desde Aroer, que está junto á la ribera del arroyo de Arnón, hasta el monte de Sión, que es Hermón;
49Y toda la llanura de esta parte del Jordán, al oriente, hasta la mar del llano, las vertientes de las aguas abajo del Pisga.

1Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.
2Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
3Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baal-peor: for all the men that followed Baal-peor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.
4But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.
5Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.
6Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
7For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?
8And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
9Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons;
10Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.
11And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick darkness.
12And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.
13And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.
14And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.
15Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire:
16Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
17The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged fowl that flieth in the air,
18The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:
19And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.
20But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are this day.
21Furthermore the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, and sware that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:
22But I must die in this land, I must not go over Jordan: but ye shall go over, and possess that good land.
23Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.
24For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.
25When thou shalt beget children, and children’s children, and ye shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger:
26I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.
27And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be left few in number among the heathen, whither the LORD shall lead you.
28And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
29But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.
30When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be obedient unto his voice;
31(For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.
32For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee, since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great thing is, or hath been heard like it?
33Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?
34Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
35Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.
36Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might instruct thee: and upon earth he shewed thee his great fire; and thou heardest his words out of the midst of the fire.
37And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of Egypt;
38To drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it is this day.
39Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.
40Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever.
41Then Moses severed three cities on this side Jordan toward the sunrising;
42That the slayer might flee thither, which should kill his neighbour unawares, and hated him not in times past; and that fleeing unto one of these cities he might live:
43Namely, Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, of the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, of the Manassites.
44And this is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel:
45These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which Moses spake unto the children of Israel, after they came forth out of Egypt,
46On this side Jordan, in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel smote, after they were come forth out of Egypt:
47And they possessed his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan, two kings of the Amorites, which were on this side Jordan toward the sunrising;
48From Aroer, which is by the bank of the river Arnon, even unto mount Sion, which is Hermon,
49And all the plain on this side Jordan eastward, even unto the sea of the plain, under the springs of Pisgah.
World English Bible
1Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and to the ordinances which I teach you, to do them, that you may live and go in and possess the land which the LORD, the God of your fathers, gives you.
2You shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall you take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
3Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baal Peor; for the LORD your God has destroyed all the men who followed Baal Peor from among you.
4But you who were faithful to the LORD your God are all alive today.
5Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do so in the middle of the land where you go in to possess it.
6Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who shall hear all these statutes and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”
7For what great nation is there that has a god so near to them as the LORD our God is whenever we call on him?
8What great nation is there that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law which I set before you today?
9Only be careful, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes saw, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your children and your children’s children—
10the day that you stood before the LORD your God in Horeb, when the LORD said to me, “Assemble the people to me, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.”
11You came near and stood under the mountain. The mountain burned with fire to the heart of the sky, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness.
12The LORD spoke to you out of the middle of the fire: you heard the voice of words, but you saw no form; you only heard a voice.
13He declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even the ten commandments. He wrote them on two stone tablets.
14The LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it.
15Be very careful, for you saw no kind of form on the day that the LORD spoke to you in Horeb out of the middle of the fire,
16lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourself a carved image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
17the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky,
18the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth;
19and lest you lift up your eyes to the sky, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the army of the sky, you are drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which the LORD your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole sky.
20But the LORD has taken you, and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be to him a people of inheritance, as it is today.
21Furthermore the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, and swore that I should not go over the Jordan, and that I should not go in to that good land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance;
22but I must die in this land. I must not go over the Jordan, but you shall go over and possess that good land.
23Be careful, lest you forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make yourselves a carved image in the form of anything which the LORD your God has forbidden you.
24For the LORD your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God.
25When you father children and children’s children, and you have been long in the land, and then corrupt yourselves, and make a carved image in the form of anything, and do that which is evil in the LORD your God’s sight to provoke him to anger,
26I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that you will soon utterly perish from off the land which you go over the Jordan to possess it. You will not prolong your days on it, but will utterly be destroyed.
27The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where the LORD will lead you away.
28There you will serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
29But from there you shall seek the LORD your God, and you will find him when you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul.
30When you are in oppression, and all these things have come on you, in the latter days you shall return to the LORD your God and listen to his voice.
31For the LORD your God is a merciful God. He will not fail you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which he swore to them.
32For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and from the one end of the sky to the other, whether there has been anything as great as this thing is, or has been heard like it?
33Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the middle of the fire, as you have heard, and live?
34Or has God tried to go and take a nation for himself from among another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
35It was shown to you so that you might know that the LORD is God. There is no one else besides him.
36Out of heaven he made you to hear his voice, that he might instruct you. On earth he made you to see his great fire; and you heard his words out of the middle of the fire.
37Because he loved your fathers, therefore he chose their offspring after them, and brought you out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt;
38to drive out nations from before you greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is today.
39Know therefore today, and take it to heart, that the LORD himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. There is no one else.
40You shall keep his statutes and his commandments which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the LORD your God gives you for all time.
41Then Moses set apart three cities beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise,
42that the man slayer might flee there, who kills his neighbor unintentionally and didn’t hate him in time past, and that fleeing to one of these cities he might live:
43Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, for the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan for the Manassites.
44This is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel.
45These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances which Moses spoke to the children of Israel when they came out of Egypt,
46beyond the Jordan, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel struck when they came out of Egypt.
47They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise;
48from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, even to Mount Siyon (also called Hermon),
49and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even to the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.
